KING JAMES BIBLENEW AMERICAN BIBLE
In those days the multitude being very great, and having nothing to eat, Jesus called his disciples unto him, and saith unto them,1 In those days when there again was a great crowd without anything to eat, he summoned the disciples and said,
I have compassion on the multitude, because they have now been with me three days, and have nothing to eat:2 "My heart is moved with pity for the crowd, because they have been with me now for three days and have nothing to eat.
And if I send them away fasting to their own houses, they will faint by the way: for divers of them came from far.3 If I send them away hungry to their homes, they will collapse on the way, and some of them have come a great distance."
And his disciples answered him, From whence can a man satisfy these men with bread here in the wilderness?4 His disciples answered him, "Where can anyone get enough bread to satisfy them here in this deserted place?"
And he asked them, How many loaves have ye? And they said, Seven.5 Still he asked them, "How many loaves do you have?" "Seven," they replied.
And he commanded the people to sit down on the ground: and he took the seven loaves, and gave thanks, and brake, and gave to his disciples to set before them; and they did set them before the people.6 He ordered the crowd to sit down on the ground. Then, taking the seven loaves he gave thanks, broke them, and gave them to his disciples to distribute, and they distributed them to the crowd.
And they had a few small fishes: and he blessed, and commanded to set them also before them.7 They also had a few fish. He said the blessing over them and ordered them distributed also.
So they did eat, and were filled: and they took up of the broken meat that was left seven baskets.8 They ate and were satisfied. They picked up the fragments left over--seven baskets.
And they that had eaten were about four thousand: and he sent them away.9 There were about four thousand people. He dismissed them
And straightway he entered into a ship with his disciples, and came into the parts of Dalmanutha.10 and got into the boat with his disciples and came to the region of Dalmanutha.
And the Pharisees came forth, and began to question with him, seeking of him a sign from heaven, tempting him.11 The Pharisees came forward and began to argue with him, seeking from him a sign from heaven to test him.
And he sighed deeply in his spirit, and saith, Why doth this generation seek after a sign? verily I say unto you, There shall no sign be given unto this generation.12 He sighed from the depth of his spirit and said, "Why does this generation seek a sign? Amen, I say to you, no sign will be given to this generation."
And he left them, and entering into the ship again departed to the other side.13 Then he left them, got into the boat again, and went off to the other shore.
Now the disciples had forgotten to take bread, neither had they in the ship with them more than one loaf.14 They had forgotten to bring bread, and they had only one loaf with them in the boat.
And he charged them, saying, Take heed, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, and of the leaven of Herod.15 He enjoined them, "Watch out, guard against the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod."
And they reasoned among themselves, saying, It is because we have no bread.16 They concluded among themselves that it was because they had no bread.
And when Jesus knew it, he saith unto them, Why reason ye, because ye have no bread? perceive ye not yet, neither understand? have ye your heart yet hardened?17 When he became aware of this he said to them, "Why do you conclude that it is because you have no bread? Do you not yet understand or comprehend? Are your hearts hardened?
Having eyes, see ye not? and having ears, hear ye not? and do ye not remember?18 Do you have eyes and not see, ears and not hear? And do you not remember,
When I brake the five loaves among five thousand, how many baskets full of fragments took ye up? They say unto him, Twelve.19 when I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many wicker baskets full of fragments you picked up?" They answered him, "Twelve."
And when the seven among four thousand, how many baskets full of fragments took ye up? And they said, Seven.20 "When I broke the seven loaves for the four thousand, how many full baskets of fragments did you pick up?" They answered (him), "Seven."
And he said unto them, How is it that ye do not understand?21 He said to them, "Do you still not understand?"
And he cometh to Bethsaida; and they bring a blind man unto him, and besought him to touch him.22 When they arrived at Bethsaida, they brought to him a blind man and begged him to touch him.
And he took the blind man by the hand, and led him out of the town; and when he had spit on his eyes, and put his hands upon him, he asked him if he saw ought.23 He took the blind man by the hand and led him outside the village. Putting spittle on his eyes he laid his hands on him and asked, "Do you see anything?"
And he looked up, and said, I see men as trees, walking.24 Looking up he replied, "I see people looking like trees and walking."
After that he put his hands again upon his eyes, and made him look up: and he was restored, and saw every man clearly.25 Then he laid hands on his eyes a second time and he saw clearly; his sight was restored and he could see everything distinctly.
And he sent him away to his house, saying, Neither go into the town, nor tell it to any in the town.26 Then he sent him home and said, "Do not even go into the village."
And Jesus went out, and his disciples, into the towns of Caesarea Philippi: and by the way he asked his disciples, saying unto them, Whom do men say that I am?27 Now Jesus and his disciples set out for the villages of Caesarea Philippi. Along the way he asked his disciples, "Who do people say that I am?"
And they answered, John the Baptist: but some say, Elias; and others, One of the prophets.28 They said in reply, "John the Baptist, others Elijah, still others one of the prophets."
And he saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am? And Peter answereth and saith unto him, Thou art the Christ.29 And he asked them, "But who do you say that I am?" Peter said to him in reply, "You are the Messiah."
And he charged them that they should tell no man of him.30 Then he warned them not to tell anyone about him.
And he began to teach them, that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders, and of the chief priests, and scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again.31 He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer greatly and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and rise after three days.
And he spake that saying openly. And Peter took him, and began to rebuke him.32 He spoke this openly. Then Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him.
But when he had turned about and looked on his disciples, he rebuked Peter, saying, Get thee behind me, Satan: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but the things that be of men.33 At this he turned around and, looking at his disciples, rebuked Peter and said, "Get behind me, Satan. You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do."
And when he had called the people unto him with his disciples also, he said unto them, Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.34 He summoned the crowd with his disciples and said to them, "Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.
For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel's, the same shall save it.35 For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and that of the gospel will save it.
For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?36 What profit is there for one to gain the whole world and forfeit his life?
Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?37 What could one give in exchange for his life?
Whosoever therefore shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation; of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.38 Whoever is ashamed of me and of my words in this faithless and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of when he comes in his Father's glory with the holy angels."
