JERUSALEM	DOUAI-RHEIMS
1 Les Israélites firent ce qui est mal aux yeux de Yahvé; Yahvé les livra pendant sept ans aux mains deMadiân,	1 And the children of Israel again did evil in the sight of the Lord: and he delivered them into the hand of Madian seven years.
2 et la main de Madiân se fit lourde sur Israël. C'est pour échapper à Madiân que les Israélites utilisèrentles crevasses des montagnes, les cavernes et les refuges.
3 Chaque fois qu'Israël avait semé, alors Madiân montait, ainsi qu'Amaleq et les fils de l'Orient, ilsmontaient contre Israël	3 And they were grievously oppressed by them. And they made themselves dens and eaves in the mountains, and strong holds to resist.
4 et, campés sur sa terre, ils dévastaient les produits du sol jusqu'aux abords de Gaza. Ils ne laissaient àIsraël aucun moyen de subsistance, ni une tête de petit bétail, ni un boeuf, ni un âne,	4 And when Israel had sown, Madian and Amalec, and the rest of the eastern nations came up:
5 car ils arrivaient, eux, leurs troupeaux et leurs tentes, aussi nombreux que les sauterelles; eux et leurschameaux étaient innombrables et ils envahissaient le pays pour le ravager.	5 And pitching their tents among them, wasted all things as they were in the blade even to the entrance of Gaza: and they left nothing at all in Israel for sustenance of life, nor sheep, nor oxen, nor asses.
6 Ainsi Madiân réduisit Israël à une grande misère et les Israélites crièrent vers Yahvé.	6 For they and all their flocks came with their tents, and like locusts filled all places, an innumerable multitude of men, and of camels, wasting whatsoever they touched.
7 Lorsque les Israélites eurent crié vers Yahvé à cause de Madiân,	7 And Israel was humbled exceedingly in the sight of Madian.
8 Yahvé envoya aux Israélites un prophète qui leur dit: "Ainsi parle Yahvé, Dieu d'Israël. C'est moi quivous ai fait monter d'Egypte, et qui vous ai fait sortir d'une maison de servitude.	8 And he cried to the Lord desiring help against the Madianites.
9 Je vous ai délivrés de la main des Egyptiens et de la main de tous ceux qui vous opprimaient. Je les aichassés devant vous, je vous ai donné leur pays,	9 And he sent unto them a prophet, and he spoke: Thus saith the Lord the God of Israel: I made you to come up out of Egypt, and brought you out of the house of bondage,
10 et je vous ai dit: Je suis Yahvé votre Dieu. Vous ne craindrez pas les dieux des Amorites dont voushabitez le pays Mais vous n'avez pas écouté ma voix."	10 And delivered you out of the hands of the Egyptians, and of all the enemies that afflicted you: and I cast them out at your coming in, and gave you their land.
11 L'Ange de Yahvé vint et s'assit sous le térébinthe d'Ophra, qui appartenait à Yoash d'Abiézer.Gédéon, son fils, battait le blé dans le pressoir pour le soustraire à Madiân,	11 dummy verses inserted by amos
12 et l'Ange de Yahvé lui apparut: "Yahvé avec toi, lui dit-il, vaillant guerrier!"	12 And an angel of the Lord came, and sat under an oak, that was in Ephra, and belonged to Joas the father of the family of Ezri. And when Gedeon his son was threshing and cleansing wheat by the winepress, to flee from Madian,
13 Gédéon lui répondit: "Je t'en prie, mon Seigneur! Si Yahvé est avec nous, d'où vient tout ce qui nousarrive? Où sont tous ces prodiges que nous racontent nos pères quand ils disent: Yahvé ne nous a-t-il pas faitmonter d'Egypte? Et maintenant Yahvé nous a abandonnés, ils nous a livrés au pouvoir de Madiân..."	13 The angel of the Lord appeared to him, and said: The Lord is with thee, O most valiant of men.
14 Alors Yahvé se tourna vers lui et lui dit: "Va avec la force qui t'anime et tu sauveras Israël de la mainde Madiân. N'est-ce pas moi qui t'envoie?"	14 And Gedeon said to him: I beseech thee, my lord, if the Lord be with us, why have these evils fallen upon us? Where are his miracles, which our fathers have told us of, saying: The Lord brought us Out of Egypt? but now the Lord hath forsaken us, and delivered us into the bands of Madian.
15 "Pardon --, mon Seigneur! lui répondit Gédéon, comment sauverais-je Israël? Mon clan est le pluspauvre en Manassé et moi, je suis le dernier dans la maison de mon père."	15 And the Lord looked upon him, and said: Go in this thy strength, and then shalt deliver Israel out of the hand of Madian: know that I have sent thee.
16 Yahvé lui répondit: "Je serai avec toi et tu battras Madiân comme si c'était un seul homme."	16 He answered and said: I beseech thee, my lord, wherewith shall I deliver Israel? Behold my family is the meanest in Manasses, and I am the least in my father's house.
17 Gédéon lui dit: "Si j'ai trouvé grâce à tes yeux, donne-moi un signe que c'est toi qui me parles.	17 And the Lord said to him: I will be with thee: and thou shalt cut off Madian as one man.
18 Ne t'éloigne pas d'ici, je te prie, jusqu'à ce que je revienne vers toi. Je t'apporterai mon offrande et jela déposerai devant toi." Et il répondit: "Je resterai jusqu'à ton retour."	18 And he said: If I have found grace before thee, give me a sign that it is thou that speakest to me,
19 Gédéon s'en alla, il prépara un chevreau, et avec une mesure de farine il fit des pains sans levain. Ilmit la viande dans une corbeille et le jus dans un pot, puis il lui apporta le tout sous le térébinthe. Comme ils'approchait,	19 And depart not hence, till I return to thee, and bring a sacrifice, and offer it to thee. And he answered: I will wait thy coming.
20 l'Ange de Yahvé lui dit: "Prends la viande et les pains sans levain, pose-les sur ce rocher et répandsle jus." Et Gédéon fit ainsi.	20 So Gedeon went in, and boiled a kid, and made unleavened loaves of a measure of flour: and putting the flesh in a basket, and the broth of the flesh into a pot, he carried all under the oak, and presented to him.
21 Alors l'Ange de Yahvé étendit l'extrémité du bâton qu'il tenait à la main et il toucha la viande et lespains sans levain. Le feu jaillit du roc, il dévora la viande et les pains sans levain, et l'Ange de Yahvé disparut àses yeux.	21 And the angel of the Lord said to him: Take the flesh and the unleavened loaves, and lay them upon that rock, and pour out the broth thereon. And when he had done so,
22 Alors Gédéon vit que c'était l'Ange de Yahvé et il dit: "Hélas! mon Seigneur Yahvé! C'est donc quej'ai vu l'Ange de Yahvé face à face?"	22 The angel of the Lord put forth the tip of the rod, which he held in his hand, and touched the flesh and the unleavened loaves: and there arose a fire from the rock, and consumed the flesh and the unleavened loaves: and the angel of the Lord vanished out of his sight.
23 Yahvé lui répondit: "Que la paix soit avec toi! Ne crains rien: tu ne mourras pas."	23 And Gedeon seeing that it was the angel of the Lord, said: Alas, my Lord God: for I have seen the angel of the Lord face to face.
24 Gédéon éleva en cet endroit un autel à Yahvé et il le nomma Yahvé-Paix. Cet autel est encoreaujourd'hui à Ophra d'Abiézer.	24 And the Lord said to him: Peace be with thee: fear not, thou shalt not die.
25 Il arriva que pendant cette nuit-là, Yahvé dit à Gédéon: "Prends le taureau de ton père, le taureau desept ans, et tu démoliras l'autel de Baal qui appartient à ton père et tu couperas le pieu sacré qui est à côté.	25 And Gedeon built there an altar to the Lord, and called it the Lord's peace, until this present day. And when he was yet in Ephra, which is of the family of Ezri,
26 Puis tu construiras à Yahvé ton Dieu, au sommet de ce lieu fort, un autel bien disposé. Tu prendrasalors le taureau et tu le brûleras en holocauste sur le bois du pieu sacré que tu auras coupé."	26 That night the Lord said to him: Take a bullock of thy father's, and another bullock of seven years, and thou shalt destroy the altar of Baal, which is thy father's: and cut down the grove that is about the altar:
27 Gédéon prit alors dix hommes parmi ses serviteurs et il fit comme Yahvé le lui avait ordonné.Seulement, comme il craignait trop sa famille et les gens de la ville pour le faire en plein jour, il le fit de nuit.	27 And thou shalt build an altar to the Lord thy God in the top of this rock, whereupon thou didst lay the sacrifice before: and thou shalt take the second bullock, and shalt offer a holocaust upon a pile of the wood, which thou shalt cut down out of the grove.
28 Le lendemain matin les gens de la ville se levèrent; l'autel de Baal avait été détruit, le pieu sacré quise dressait à côté avait été coupé, et le taureau avait été offert en holocauste sur l'autel qu'on venait de bâtir.	28 Then Gedeon taking ten men of his servants, did as the Lord had commanded him. But fearing his father's house, and the men of that city, he would not do it by day, but did all by night.
29 Ils se dirent alors les uns aux autres: "Qui a fait cela?" Ils cherchèrent, s'informèrent et ils dirent:"C'est Gédéon fils de Yoash qui a fait cela."	29 And when the men of that town were risen in the morning, they saw the altar of Baal destroyed, and the grove cut down, and the second bullock laid upon the altar, which then was built.
30 Les gens de la ville dirent alors à Yoash: "Fais sortir ton fils et qu'il meure, car il a détruit l'autel deBaal et coupé le pieu sacré qui se dressait à côté."	30 And they said one to another: Who hath done this? And when they inquired for the author of the fact, it was said: Gedeon the son of Joas did all this.
31 Yoash répondit à tous ceux qui se tenaient près de lui: "Est-ce à vous de défendre Baal? Est-ce àvous de lui venir en aide? (Quiconque défend Baal doit être mis à mort avant qu'il ne fasse jour.) S'il est dieu,qu'il se défende lui-même, puisque Gédéon a détruit son autel."	31 And they said to Joas: Bring out thy son hither, that he may die: because he hath destroyed the altar of Baal, and hath cut down his grove.
32 Ce jour-là on donna à Gédéon le nom de Yerubbaal, car, disait-on: "Que Baal s'en prenne à lui,puisqu'il a détruit son autel!"	32 He answered them: Are you the avengers of Baal, that you fight for him? he that is his adversary, let him die before to morrow light appear: if he be a god, let him revenge himself on him that hath cast down his altar.
33 Tout Madiân, Amaleq et les fils de l'Orient se réunirent et, ayant passé le Jourdain, ils vinrent camperdans la plaine de Yizréel.	33 From that day Gedeon was called Jerobaal, because Joss had said: Let Baal revenge himself on him that hath cast down his altar.
34 L'esprit de Yahvé revêtit Gédéon, il sonna du cor et Abiézer se groupa derrière lui.	34 Now all Madian, and Amalec, and the eastern people were gathered together, and passing over the Jordan, camped in the valley of Jezrael.
35 Il envoya des messagers dans tout Manassé, qui se groupa aussi derrière lui, et il envoya desmessagers dans Asher, dans Zabulon et dans Nephtali; et ils montèrent à sa rencontre.	35 But the spirit of the Lord came upon Gedeon, and be sounded the trumpet and called together the house of Abiezer, to follow him.
36 Gédéon dit à Dieu: "Si vraiment tu veux délivrer Israël par ma main, comme tu l'as dit,	36 And he sent messengers into all Manasses, and they also followed him: and other messengers into Aser and Zabulon and Nephtali, and they came to meet him.
37 voici que j'étends sur l'aire une toison de laine: s'il y a de la rosée seulement sur la toison et que le solreste sec, alors je saurai que tu délivreras Israël par ma main, comme tu l'as dit."	37 And Gedeon said to God: If thou wilt save Israel by my hand, as thou hast said,
38 Et il en fut ainsi. Gédéon se leva le lendemain de bon matin, il pressa la toison et, de la toison, ilexprima la rosée, une pleine coupe d'eau.	38 I will put this fleece of wool on the floor: if there be dew on the fleece only, and it be dry on all the ground beside, I, shall know that by my hand, as thou hast said, thou wilt deliver Israel.
39 Gédéon dit encore à Dieu: "Ne t'irrite pas contre moi si je parle encore une fois. Permets que je fasseune dernière fois l'épreuve de la toison: qu'il n'y ait de sec que la seule toison et qu'il y ait de la rosée sur tout lesol!"	39 And it was so. And rising before day wringing the fleece, he filled a vessel with the dew.
40 Et Dieu fit ainsi en cette nuit-là. La toison seule resta sèche et il y eut de la rosée sur tout le sol.	40 And he said again to God: let not thy wrath be kindled against me if I try once more, seeking a sign in the fleece. I pray that the fleece only may be dry, and all the ground wet with dew.
