JERUSALEM	NEW AMERICAN BIBLE
1 En ce temps-là -- il n'y avait pas alors de roi en Israël -- il y avait un homme, un lévite, qui résidait aufond de la montagne d'Ephraïm. Il prit pour concubine une femme de Bethléem de Juda.	1 At that time, when there was no king in Israel, there was a Levite residing in remote parts of the mountain region of Ephraim who had taken for himself a concubine from Bethlehem of Judah.
2 Dans un moment de colère sa concubine le quitta pour rentrer dans la maison de son père à Bethléemde Juda, et elle y demeura un certain temps, quatre mois.	2 His concubine was unfaithful to him and left him for her father's house in Bethlehem of Judah, where she stayed for some four months.
3 Son mari partit et alla la trouver pour parler à son coeur et la ramener chez lui; il avait avec lui sonserviteur et deux ânes. Comme il arrivait à la maison du père de la jeune femme, celui-ci l'aperçut et s'en vinttout joyeux au-devant de lui.	3 Her husband then set out with his servant and a pair of asses, and went after her to forgive her and take her back. She brought him into her father's house, and on seeing him, the girl's father joyfully made him welcome.
4 Son beau-père, le père de la jeune femme, le retint et il demeura trois jours chez lui, ils y mangèrentet burent et ils y passèrent la nuit.	4 He was detained by the girl's father, and so he spent three days with this father-in-law of his, eating and drinking and passing the night there.
5 Le quatrième jour, ils s'éveillèrent de bon matin et le lévite se disposait à partir, quand le père de lajeune femme dit à son gendre: "Restaure-toi en mangeant un morceau de pain, vous partirez après."	5 On the fourth day they rose early in the morning and he prepared to go. But the girl's father said to his son-in-law, "Fortify yourself with a little food; you can go later on."
6 S'étant assis, ils se mirent à manger et à boire tous les deux ensemble, puis le père de la jeune femmedit à cet homme: "Consens, je te prie, à passer la nuit, et que ton coeur se réjouisse."	6 So they stayed and the two men ate and drank together. Then the girl's father said to the husband, "Why not decide to spend the night here and enjoy yourself?"
7 Comme l'homme se levait pour partir, le beau-père insista auprès de lui, et il y passa encore la nuit.	7 The man still made a move to go, but when his father-in-law pressed him he went back and spent the night there.
8 Le cinquième jour, le lévite se leva de bon matin pour partir, mais le père de la jeune femme lui dit:"Restaure-toi d'abord, je t'en prie!" Ils s'attardèrent ainsi jusqu'au déclin du jour et ils mangèrent tous deuxensemble.	8 On the fifth morning he rose early to depart, but the girl's father said, "Fortify yourself and tarry until the afternoon." When he and his father-in-law had eaten,
9 Le mari se levait pour partir avec sa concubine et son serviteur, quand son beau-père, le père de lajeune femme, lui fit: "Voici que le jour baisse vers le soir, passez donc la nuit. Voici le déclin du jour, passez lanuit ici, et que ton coeur se réjouisse. Demain de bon matin, vous partirez et tu regagneras ta tente."	9 and the husband was ready to go with his concubine and servant, the girl's father said to him, "It is already growing dusk. Stay for the night. See, the day is coming to an end. Spend the night here and enjoy yourself. Early tomorrow you can start your journey home."
10 Mais l'homme, refusant de passer la nuit, se leva, partit et il arriva en vue de Jébus -- c'est-à-dire deJérusalem. Il avait avec lui deux ânes bâtés, ainsi que sa concubine et son serviteur.	10 The man, however, refused to stay another night; he and his concubine set out with a pair of saddled asses, and traveled till they came opposite Jebus, which is Jerusalem.
11 Lorsqu'ils furent près de Jébus, le jour avait beaucoup baissé. Le serviteur dit à son maître: "Viensdonc, je te prie, faisons un détour vers cette ville des Jébuséens et nous y passerons la nuit."	11 Since they were near Jebus with the day far gone, the servant said to his master, "Come, let us turn off to this city of the Jebusites and spend the night in it."
12 Son maître lui répondit: "Nous ne ferons pas de détour vers une ville d'étrangers qui ne sont pas,ceux-là, des Israélites, mais nous pousserons jusqu'à Gibéa."	12 But his master said to him, "We will not turn off to a city of foreigners, who are not Israelites, but will go on to Gibeah.
13 Et il ajouta à son serviteur: "Allons, et tâchons d'atteindre l'une de ces localités pour y passer lanuit, Gibéa ou Rama."	13 Come," he said to his servant, "let us make for some other place, either Gibeah or Ramah, to spend the night."
14 Ils poussèrent donc plus loin et continuèrent leur marche. A leur arrivée en face de Gibéa deBenjamin, le soleil se couchait.	14 So they continued on their way till the sun set on them when they were abreast of Gibeah of Benjamin.
15 Ils se tournèrent alors de ce côté pour passer la nuit à Gibéa. Le lévite, étant entré, s'assit sur laplace de la ville, mais personne ne leur offrit dans sa maison l'hospitalité pour la nuit.	15 There they turned off to enter Gibeah for the night. The man waited in the public square of the city he had entered, but no one offered them the shelter of his home for the night.
16 Survint un vieillard qui, le soir venu, rentrait de son travail des champs. C'était un homme de lamontagne d'Ephraïm, qui résidait à Gibéa, tandis que les gens de l'endroit étaient des Benjaminites.	16 In the evening, however, an old man came from his work in the field; he was from the mountain region of Ephraim, though he lived among the Benjaminite townspeople of Gibeah.
17 Levant les yeux, il remarqua le voyageur, sur la place de la ville: "Où vas-tu, lui dit le vieillard, etd'où viens-tu?"	17 When he noticed the traveler in the public square of the city, the old man asked where he was going, and whence he had come.
18 Et l'autre lui répondit: "Nous faisons route de Bethléem de Juda vers le fond de la montagned'Ephraïm. C'est de là que je suis. J'étais allé à Bethléem de Juda et je retourne chez moi, mais personne ne m'aoffert l'hospitalité dans sa maison.	18 He said to him, "We are traveling from Bethlehem of Judah far up into the mountain region of Ephraim, where I belong. I have been to Bethlehem of Judah and am now going back home; but no one has offered us the shelter of his house.
19 Nous avons pourtant de la paille et du fourrage pour nos ânes, j'ai aussi du pain et du vin pour moi,pour ta servante et pour le jeune homme qui accompagne ton serviteur. Nous ne manquons de rien."	19 We have straw and fodder for our asses, and bread and wine for the woman and myself and for our servant; there is nothing else we need."
20 "Sois le bienvenu, repartit le vieillard, laisse-moi pourvoir à tous tes besoins, mais ne passe pas lanuit sur la place."	20 "You are welcome," the old man said to him, "but let me provide for all your needs, and do not spend the night in the public square."
21 Il le fit donc entrer dans sa maison et il donna du fourrage aux ânes. Les voyageurs se lavèrent lespieds, puis mangèrent et burent.	21 So he led them to his house and provided fodder for the asses. Then they washed their feet, and ate and drank.
22 Pendant qu'ils se réconfortaient, voici que des gens de la ville, des vauriens, s'attroupèrent autour dela maison et, frappant à la porte à coups redoublés, ils dirent au vieillard, maître de la maison: "Fais sortirl'homme qui est venu chez toi, que nous le connaissions."	22 While they were enjoying themselves, the men of the city, who were corrupt, surrounded the house and beat on the door. They said to the old man whose house it was, "Bring out your guest, that we may abuse him."
23 Alors le maître de la maison sortit vers eux et leur dit: "Non, mes frères, je vous en prie, ne soyezpas des criminels. Après que cet homme est entré dans ma maison, ne commettez pas cette infamie.	23 The owner of the house went out to them and said, "No, my brothers; do not be so wicked. Since this man is my guest, do not commit this crime.
24 Voici ma fille qui est vierge. Je vous la livrerai. Abusez d'elle et faites ce que bon vous semble,mais ne commettez pas à l'égard de cet homme une pareille infamie."	24 Rather let me bring out my maiden daughter or his concubine. Ravish them, or do whatever you want with them; but against the man you must not commit this wanton crime."
25 Ces gens ne voulurent pas l'écouter. Alors l'homme prit sa concubine et la leur amena dehors. Ils laconnurent, ils abusèrent d'elle toute la nuit jusqu'au matin et, au lever de l'aurore, ils la lâchèrent.	25 When the men would not listen to his host, the husband seized his concubine and thrust her outside to them. They had relations with her and abused her all night until the following dawn, when they let her go.
26 Vers le matin la femme s'en vint tomber à l'entrée de la maison de l'homme chez qui était son mariet elle resta là jusqu'au jour.	26 Then at daybreak the woman came and collapsed at the entrance of the house in which her husband was a guest, where she lay until the morning.
27 Au matin son mari se leva et, ayant ouvert la porte de la maison, il sortait pour continuer sa route,quand il vit que la femme, sa concubine, gisait à l'entrée de la maison, les mains sur le seuil.	27 When her husband rose that day and opened the door of the house to start out again on his journey, there lay the woman, his concubine, at the entrance of the house with her hands on the threshold.
28 "Lève-toi, lui dit-il, et partons!" Pas de réponse. Alors il la chargea sur son âne et il se mit en routepour rentrer chez lui.	28 He said to her, "Come, let us go"; but there was no answer. So the man placed her on an ass and started out again for home.
29 Arrivé à la maison, il prit un couteau et, saisissant sa concubine, il la découpa, membre parmembre, en douze morceaux, puis il l'envoya dans tout le territoire d'Israël.	29 On reaching home, he took a knife to the body of his concubine, cut her into twelve pieces, and sent them throughout the territory of Israel.
30 Il donna des ordres à ses émissaires, disant: "Voici ce que vous direz à tous les Israélites: A-t-onjamais vu pareille chose depuis le jour où les Israélites sont montés du pays d'Egypte jusqu'aujourd'hui?Réfléchissez-y, consultez-vous et prononcez." Et tous ceux qui voyaient, disaient: "Jamais chose pareille n'estarrivée et ne s'est vue depuis que les Israélites sont montés du pays d'Egypte jusqu'aujourd'hui."	30 Everyone who saw this said, "Nothing like this has been done or seen from the day the Israelites came up from the land of Egypt to this day. Take note of it, and state what you propose to do."
