Épître aux Hébreux 11

JERUSALEM	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Or la foi est la garantie des biens que l'on espère, la preuve des réalités qu'on ne voit pas.	1 Only faith can guarantee the blessings that we hope for, or prove the existence of realities that areunseen.
2 C'est elle qui a valu aux anciens un bon témoignage.	2 It is for their faith that our ancestors are acknowledged.
3 Par la foi, nous comprenons que les mondes ont été formés par une parole de Dieu, de sorte quece que l'on voit provient de ce qui n'est pas apparent.	3 It is by faith that we understand that the ages were created by a word from God, so that from theinvisible the visible world came to be.
4 Par la foi, Abel offrit à Dieu un sacrifice de plus grande valeur que celui de Caïn; aussi fut-ilproclamé juste, Dieu ayant rendu témoignage à ses dons, et par elle aussi, bien que mort, il parle encore.	4 It was because of his faith that Abel offered God a better sacrifice than Cain, and for that he wasacknowledged as upright when God himself made acknowledgement of his offerings. Though he is dead, he stillspeaks by faith.
5 Par la foi, Hénoch fut enlevé, en sorte qu'il ne vit pas la mort, et on ne le trouva plus, parce queDieu l'avait enlevé. Avant son enlèvement, en effet, il lui est rendu témoignage qu'il avait plu à Dieu.	5 It was because of his faith that Enoch was taken up and did not experience death: he was no more,because God took him; because before his assumption he was acknowledged to have pleased God.
6 Or sans la foi il est impossible de lui plaire. Car celui qui s'approche de Dieu doit croire qu'ilexiste et qu'il se fait le rémunérateur de ceux qui le cherchent.	6 Now it is impossible to please God without faith, since anyone who comes to him must believe that heexists and rewards those who seek him.
7 Par la foi, Noé, divinement averti de ce qui n'était pas encore visible, saisi d'une crainte religieuse,construisit une arche pour sauver sa famille. Par la foi, il condamna le monde et il devint héritier de la justice quis'obtient par la foi.	7 It was through his faith that Noah, when he had been warned by God of something that had neverbeen seen before, took care to build an ark to save his family. His faith was a judgement on the world, and hewas able to claim the uprightness which comes from faith.
8 Par la foi, Abraham obéit à l'appel de partir vers un pays qu'il devait recevoir en héritage, et ilpartit ne sachant où il allait.	8 It was by faith that Abraham obeyed the cal to set out for a country that was the inheritance given tohim and his descendants, and that he set out without knowing where he was going.
9 Par la foi, il vint séjourner dans la Terre promise comme en un pays étranger, y vivant sous destentes, ainsi qu'Isaac et Jacob, héritiers avec lui de la même promesse.	9 By faith he sojourned in the Promised Land as though it were not his, living in tents with Isaac andJacob, who were heirs with him of the same promise.
10 C'est qu'il attendait la ville pourvue de fondations dont Dieu est l'architecte et le constructeur.	10 He looked forward to the wel -founded city, designed and built by God.
11 Par la foi, Sara, elle aussi, reçut la vertu de concevoir, et cela en dépit de son âge avancé, parcequ'elle estima fidèle celui qui avait promis.	11 It was equal y by faith that Sarah, in spite of being past the age, was made able to conceive,because she believed that he who had made the promise was faithful to it.
12 C'est bien pour cela que d'un seul homme, et déjà marqué par la mort, naquirent des descendantscomparables par leur nombre aux étoiles du ciel et aux grains de sable sur le rivage de la mer, innombrables...	12 Because of this, there came from one man, and one who already had the mark of death on him,descendants as numerous as the stars of heaven and the grains of sand on the seashore which cannot becounted.
13 C'est dans la foi qu'ils moururent tous sans avoir reçu l'objet des promesses, mais ils l'ont vu etsalué de loin, et ils ont confessé qu'ils étaient étrangers et voyageurs sur la terre.	13 Al these died in faith, before receiving any of the things that had been promised, but they saw themin the far distance and welcomed them, recognising that they were only strangers and nomads on earth.
14 Ceux qui parlent ainsi font voir clairement qu'ils sont à la recherche d'une patrie.	14 People who use such terms about themselves make it quite plain that they are in search of ahomeland.
15 Et s'ils avaient pensé à celle d'où ils étaient sortis, ils auraient eu le temps d'y retourner.	15 If they had meant the country they came from, they would have had the opportunity to return to it;
16 Or, en fait, ils aspirent à une patrie meilleure, c'est-à-dire céleste. C'est pourquoi, Dieu n'a pashonte de s'appeler leur Dieu; il leur a préparé, en effet, une ville...	16 but in fact they were longing for a better homeland, their heavenly homeland. That is why God is notashamed to be cal ed their God, since he has founded the city for them.
17 Par la foi, Abraham, mis à l'épreuve, a offert Isaac, et c'est son fils unique qu'il offrait ensacrifice, lui qui était le dépositaire des promesses,	17 It was by faith that Abraham, when put to the test, offered up Isaac. He offered to sacrifice his onlyson even though he had yet to receive what had been promised,
18 lui à qui il avait été dit: C'est par Isaac que tu auras une postérité.	18 and he had been told: Isaac is the one through whom your name will be carried on.
19 Dieu, pensait-il, est capable même de ressusciter les morts; c'est pour cela qu'il recouvra son fils,et ce fut un symbole.	19 He was confident that God had the power even to raise the dead; and so, figuratively speaking, hewas given back Isaac from the dead.
20 Par la foi encore, Isaac donna à Jacob et à Esaü des bénédictions assurant l'avenir.	20 It was by faith that this same Isaac gave his blessing to Jacob and Esau for the stil distant future.
21 Par la foi, Jacob mourant bénit chacun des fils de Joseph et il se prosterna appuyé sur l'extrémitéde son bâton.	21 By faith Jacob, when he was dying, blessed each of Joseph's sons, bowed in reverence, as he leanton his staff.
22 Par la foi, Joseph, proche de sa fin, évoqua l'exode des fils d'Israël et donna des ordres au sujetde ses restes.	22 It was by faith that, when he was about to die, Joseph mentioned the Exodus of the Israelites andgave instructions about his own remains.
23 Par la foi, Moïse, à sa naissance fut caché par ses parents pendant trois mois, parce qu'ils virentque le petit enfant était beau et ils ne craignirent pas l'édit du roi.	23 It was by faith that Moses, when he was born, was kept hidden by his parents for three months;because they saw that he was a fine child; they were not afraid of the royal edict.
24 Par la foi, Moïse, devenu grand, refusa d'être appelé fils d'une fille d'un Pharaon,	24 It was by faith that, when he was grown up, Moses refused to be known as the son of Pharaoh'sdaughter
25 aimant mieux être maltraité avec le peuple de Dieu que de connaître la jouissance éphémère dupéché,	25 and chose to be ill-treated in company with God's people rather than to enjoy the transitory pleasuresof sin.
26 estimant comme une richesse supérieure aux trésors de l'Egypte l'opprobre du Christ. Il avait, eneffet, les yeux fixés sur la récompense.	26 He considered that the humiliations offered to the Anointed were something more precious than althe treasures of Egypt, because he had his eyes fixed on the reward.
27 Par la foi, il quitta l'Egypte sans craindre la fureur du roi: comme s'il voyait l'Invisible, il tintferme.	27 It was by faith that he left Egypt without fear of the king's anger; he held to his purpose like someonewho could see the Invisible.
28 Par la foi, il célébra la Pâque et fit l'aspersion du sang, afin que l'Exterminateur ne touchât pointles premiers-nés d'Israël.	28 It was by faith that he kept the Passover and sprinkled the blood to prevent the Destroyer fromtouching any of their first-born sons.
29 Par la foi, ils traversèrent la mer Rouge comme une terre sèche, tandis que les Egyptiens, ayantessayé le passage, furent engloutis.	29 It was by faith they crossed the Red Sea as easily as dry land, while the Egyptians, trying to do thesame, were drowned.
30 Par la foi, les murs de Jéricho tombèrent, quand on en eut fait le tour pendant sept jours.	30 It was through faith that the wal s of Jericho fel down when the people had marched round them forseven days.
31 Par la foi, Rahab la prostituée ne périt pas avec les incrédules, parce qu'elle avait accueillipacifiquement les éclaireurs.	31 It was by faith that Rahab the prostitute welcomed the spies and so was not killed with theunbelievers.
32 Et que dirai-je encore? Car le temps me manquerait si je racontais ce qui concerne Gédéon,Baraq, Samson, Jephté, David, ainsi que Samuel et les Prophètes,	32 What more shal I say? There is not time for me to give an account of Gideon, Barak, Samson,Jephthah, or of David, Samuel and the prophets.
33 eux qui, grâce à la foi, soumirent des royaumes, exercèrent la justice, obtinrentl'accomplissement des promesses, fermèrent la gueule des lions,	33 These were men who through faith conquered kingdoms, did what was upright and earned thepromises. They could keep a lion's mouth shut,
34 éteignirent la violence du feu, échappèrent au tranchant du glaive, furent rendus vigoureux, demalades qu'ils étaient, montrèrent de la vaillance à la guerre, refoulèrent les invasions étrangères.	34 put out blazing fires and emerge unscathed from battle. They were weak people who were givenstrength to be brave in war and drive back foreign invaders.
35 Des femmes ont recouvré leurs morts par la résurrection. Les uns se sont laissé torturer, refusantleur délivrance afin d'obtenir une meilleure résurrection.	35 Some returned to their wives from the dead by resurrection; and others submitted to torture, refusingrelease so that they would rise again to a better life.
36 D'autres subirent l'épreuve des dérisions et des fouets, et même celle des chaînes et de la prison.	36 Some had to bear being pil oried and flogged, or even chained up in prison.
37 Ils ont été lapidés, sciés, ils ont péri par le glaive, ils sont allés çà et là, sous des peaux demoutons et des toisons de chèvres, dénués, opprimés, maltraités,	37 They were stoned, or sawn in half, or kil ed by the sword; they were homeless, and wore only theskins of sheep and goats; they were in want and hardship, and maltreated.
38 eux dont le monde était indigne, errant dans les déserts, les montagnes, les cavernes, les antresde la terre.	38 They were too good for the world and they wandered in deserts and mountains and in caves andravines.
39 Et tous ceux-là, bien qu'ils aient reçu un bon témoignage à cause de leur foi, ne bénéficièrent pasde la promesse:	39 These al won acknowledgement through their faith, but they did not receive what was promised,
40 c'est que Dieu prévoyait pour nous un sort meilleur, et ils ne devaient pas parvenir sans nous à laperfection.	40 since God had made provision for us to have something better, and they were not to reach perfectionexcept with us.
