Évangile selon Jean 5

JERUSALEM	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Après cela, il y eut une fête des Juifs et Jésus monta à Jérusalem.	1 After this there was a Jewish festival, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
2 Or il existe à Jérusalem, près de la Probatique, une piscine qui s'appelle en hébreu Bethesda et qui acinq portiques.	2 Now in Jerusalem next to the Sheep Pool there is a pool called Bethesda in Hebrew, which has fiveporticos;
3 Sous ces portiques gisaient une multitude d'infirmes, aveugles, boiteux, impotents, qui attendaient lebouillonnement de l'eau.	3 and under these were crowds of sick people, blind, lame, paralysed.
4 Car l'ange du Seigneur descendait par moments dans la piscine et agitait l'eau: le premier alors à yentrer, après que l'eau avait été agitée, se trouvait guéri, quel que fût son mal.	4
5 Il y avait là un homme qui était infirme depuis 38 ans.	5 One man there had an il ness which had lasted thirty-eight years,
6 Jésus, le voyant étendu et apprenant qu'il était dans cet état depuis longtemps déjà, lui dit: "Veux-tuguérir?"	6 and when Jesus saw him lying there and knew he had been in that condition for a long time, he said,'Do you want to be wel again?'
7 L'infirme lui répondit: "Seigneur, je n'ai personne pour me jeter dans la piscine, quand l'eau vient à êtreagitée; et, le temps que j'y aille, un autre descend avant moi."	7 'Sir,' replied the sick man, 'I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is disturbed; and while Iam stil on the way, someone else gets down there before me.'
8 Jésus lui dit: "Lève-toi, prends ton grabat et marche."	8 Jesus said, 'Get up, pick up your sleeping-mat and walk around.'
9 Et aussitôt l'homme fut guéri; il prit son grabat et il marchait. Or c'était le sabbat, ce jour-là.	9 The man was cured at once, and he picked up his mat and started to walk around. Now that dayhappened to be the Sabbath,
10 Les Juifs dirent donc à celui qui venait d'être guéri: "C'est le sabbat. Il ne t'est pas permis de porter tongrabat."	10 so the Jews said to the man who had been cured, 'It is the Sabbath; you are not al owed to carry yoursleeping-mat.'
11 Il leur répondit: "Celui qui m'a guéri m'a dit: Prends ton grabat et marche."	11 He replied, 'But the man who cured me told me, "Pick up your sleeping-mat and walk around." '
12 Ils lui demandèrent: "Quel est l'homme qui t'a dit: Prends ton grabat et marche?"	12 They asked, 'Who is the man who said to you, "Pick up your sleeping-mat and walk around"? '
13 Mais celui qui avait été guéri ne savait pas qui c'était; Jésus en effet avait disparu, car il y avait fouleen ce lieu.	13 The man had no idea who it was, since Jesus had disappeared, as the place was crowded.
14 Après cela, Jésus le rencontre dans le Temple et lui dit: "Te voilà guéri; ne pèche plus, de peur qu'il net'arrive pire encore."	14 After a while Jesus met him in the Temple and said, 'Now you are wel again, do not sin any more, orsomething worse may happen to you.'
15 L'homme s'en fut révéler aux Juifs que c'était Jésus qui l'avait guéri.	15 The man went back and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had cured him.
16 C'est pourquoi les Juifs persécutaient Jésus: parce qu'il faisait ces choses-là le jour du sabbat.	16 It was because he did things like this on the Sabbath that the Jews began to harass Jesus.
17 Mais il leur répondit: "Mon Père est à l'oeuvre jusqu'à présent et j'oeuvre moi aussi."	17 His answer to them was, 'My Father stil goes on working, and I am at work, too.'
18 Aussi les Juifs n'en cherchaient que davantage à le tuer, puisque, non content de violer le sabbat, ilappelait encore Dieu son propre Père, se faisant égal à Dieu.	18 But that only made the Jews even more intent on kil ing him, because not only was he breaking theSabbath, but he spoke of God as his own Father and so made himself God's equal.
19 Jésus reprit donc la parole et leur dit: "En vérité, en vérité, je vous le dis, le Fils ne peut rien faire delui-même, qu'il ne le voie faire au Père; ce que fait celui-ci, le Fils le fait pareillement.	19 To this Jesus replied: In al truth I tel you, by himself the Son can do nothing; he can do only what hesees the Father doing: and whatever the Father does the Son does too.
20 Car le Père aime le Fils, et lui montre tout ce qu'il fait; et il lui montrera des oeuvres plus grandes quecelles-ci, à vous en stupéfier.	20 For the Father loves the Son and shows him everything he himself does, and he wil show him evengreater things than these, works that will astonish you.
21 Comme le Père en effet ressuscite les morts et leur redonne vie, ainsi le Fils donne vie à qui il veut.	21 Thus, as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so the Son gives life to anyone he chooses;
22 Car le Père ne juge personne; il a donné au Fils le jugement tout entier,	22 for the Father judges no one; he has entrusted all judgement to the Son,
23 afin que tous honorent le Fils comme ils honorent le Père. Qui n'honore pas le Fils n'honore pas lePère qui l'a envoyé.	23 so that al may honour the Son as they honour the Father. Whoever refuses honour to the Son refuseshonour to the Father who sent him.
24 En vérité, en vérité, je vous le dis, celui qui écoute ma parole et croit à celui qui m'a envoyé a la vieéternelle et ne vient pas en jugement, mais il est passé de la mort à la vie.	24 In al truth I tel you, whoever listens to my words, and believes in the one who sent me, has eternallife; without being brought to judgement such a person has passed from death to life.
25 En vérité, en vérité, je vous le dis, l'heure vient - et c'est maintenant - où les morts entendront la voixdu Fils de Dieu, et ceux qui l'auront entendue vivront.	25 In al truth I tel you, the hour is coming -- indeed it is already here -- when the dead wil hear the voiceof the Son of God, and al who hear it wil live.
26 Comme le Père en effet a la vie en lui-même, de même a-t-il donné au Fils d'avoir aussi la vie en lui-même	26 For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself;
27 et il lui a donné pouvoir d'exercer le jugement parce qu'il est Fils d'homme.	27 and, because he is the Son of man, has granted him power to give judgement.
28 N'en soyez pas étonnés, car elle vient, l'heure où tous ceux qui sont dans les tombeaux entendront savoix	28 Do not be surprised at this, for the hour is coming when the dead wil leave their graves at the sound ofhis voice:
29 et sortiront: ceux qui auront fait le bien, pour une résurrection de vie, ceux qui auront fait le mal, pourune résurrection de jugement.	29 those who did good will come forth to life; and those who did evil will come forth to judgement.
30 Je ne puis rien faire de moi-même. Je juge selon ce que j'entends: et mon jugement est juste, parce queje ne cherche pas ma volonté, mais la volonté de celui qui m'a envoyé.	30 By myself I can do nothing; I can judge only as I am told to judge, and my judging is just, because Iseek to do not my own wil but the wil of him who sent me.
31 Si je me rends témoignage à moi-même, mon témoignage n'est pas valable.	31 Were I to testify on my own behalf, my testimony would not be true;
32 Un autre témoigne de moi, et je sais qu'il est valable le témoignage qu'il me rend.	32 but there is another witness who speaks on my behalf, and I know that his testimony is true.
33 Vous avez envoyé trouver Jean et il a rendu témoignage à la vérité.	33 You sent messengers to John, and he gave his testimony to the truth-
34 Non que je relève du témoignage d'un homme; si j'en parle, c'est pour votre salut.	34 not that I depend on human testimony; no, it is for your salvation that I mention it.
35 Celui-là était la lampe qui brûle et qui luit, et vous avez voulu vous réjouir une heure à sa lumière.	35 John was a lamp lit and shining and for a time you were content to enjoy the light that he gave.
36 Mais j'ai plus grand que le témoignage de Jean: les oeuvres que le Père m'a donné à mener à bonnefin, ces oeuvres mêmes que je fais me rendent témoignage que le Père m'envoie.	36 But my testimony is greater than John's: the deeds my Father has given me to perform, these samedeeds of mine testify that the Father has sent me.
37 Et le Père qui m'a envoyé, lui, me rend témoignage. Vous n'avez jamais entendu sa voix, vous n'avezjamais vu sa face,	37 Besides, the Father who sent me bears witness to me himself. You have never heard his voice, youhave never seen his shape,
38 et sa parole, vous ne l'avez pas à demeure en vous, puisque vous ne croyez pas celui qu'il a envoyé.	38 and his word finds no home in you because you do not believe in the one whom he has sent.
39 Vous scrutez les Ecritures, parce que vous pensez avoir en elles la vie éternelle, et ce sont elles qui merendent témoignage,	39 You pore over the scriptures, believing that in them you can find eternal life; it is these scriptures thattestify to me,
40 et vous ne voulez pas venir à moi pour avoir la vie!	40 and yet you refuse to come to me to receive life!
41 De la gloire, je n'en reçois pas qui vienne des hommes;	41 Human glory means nothing to me.
42 mais je vous connais: vous n'avez pas en vous l'amour de Dieu;	42 Besides, I know you too well: you have no love of God in you.
43 je viens au nom de mon Père et vous ne m'accueillez pas; qu'un autre vienne en son propre nom, celui-là, vous l'accueillerez.	43 I have come in the name of my Father and you refuse to accept me; if someone else should come inhis own name you would accept him.
44 Comment pouvez-vous croire, vous qui recevez votre gloire les uns des autres, et ne cherchez pas lagloire qui vient du Dieu unique.	44 How can you believe, since you look to each other for glory and are not concerned with the glory thatcomes from the one God?
45 Ne pensez pas que je vous accuserai auprès du Père. Votre accusateur, c'est Moïse, en qui vous avezmis votre espoir.	45 Do not imagine that I am going to accuse you before the Father: you have placed your hopes onMoses, and Moses wil be the one who accuses you.
46 Car si vous croyiez Moïse, vous me croiriez aussi, car c'est de moi qu'il a écrit.	46 If you real y believed him you would believe me too, since it was about me that he was writing;
47 Mais si vous ne croyez pas à ses écrits, comment croirez-vous à mes paroles?"	47 but if you wil not believe what he wrote, how can you believe what I say?
