| 4 Joseph aussi monta de Galilée, de la ville de Nazareth, en Judée, à la ville de David, qui s'appelleBethléem, - parce qu'il était de la maison et de la lignée de David -- | 4 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the city of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, |
| 5 afin de se faire recenser avec Marie, sa fiancée, qui était enceinte. | 5 to be enrolled with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child. |
| 6 Or il advint, comme ils étaient là, que les jours furent accomplis où elle devait enfanter. | 6 And while they were there, the time came for her to be delivered. |
| 7 Elle enfanta son fils premier-né, l'enveloppa de langes et le coucha dans une crèche, parce qu'ilsmanquaient de place dans la salle. | 7 And she gave birth to her first-born son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn. |
| 8 Il y avait dans la même région des bergers qui vivaient aux champs et gardaient leurs troupeaux durantles veilles de la nuit. | 8 And in that region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. |
| 9 L'Ange du Seigneur se tint près d'eux et la gloire du Seigneur les enveloppa de sa clarté; et ils furentsaisis d'une grande crainte. | 9 And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with fear. |
| 10 Mais l'ange leur dit: "Soyez sans crainte, car voici que je vous annonce une grande joie, qui sera cellede tout le peuple: | 10 And the angel said to them, "Be not afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of a great joy which will come to all the people; |
| 11 aujourd'hui vous est né un Sauveur, qui est le Christ Seigneur, dans la ville de David. | 11 for to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. |
| 12 Et ceci vous servira de signe: vous trouverez un nouveau-né enveloppé de langes et couché dans unecrèche." | 12 And this will be a sign for you: you will find a babe wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger." |
| 13 Et soudain se joignit à l'ange une troupe nombreuse de l'armée céleste, qui louait Dieu, en disant: | 13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, |
| 14 "Gloire à Dieu au plus haut des cieux et sur la terre paix aux hommes objets de sa complaisance!" | 14 "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among men with whom he is pleased!" |
| 15 Et il advint, quand les anges les eurent quittés pour le ciel, que les bergers se dirent entre eux: "Allonsjusqu'à Bethléem et voyons ce qui est arrivé et que le Seigneur nous a fait connaître." | 15 When the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, "Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us." |
| 16 Ils vinrent donc en hâte et trouvèrent Marie, Joseph et le nouveau-né couché dans la crèche. | 16 And they went with haste, and found Mary and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger. |
| 17 Ayant vu, ils firent connaître ce qui leur avait été dit de cet enfant; | 17 And when they saw it they made known the saying which had been told them concerning this child; |
| 18 et tous ceux qui les entendirent furent étonnés de ce que leur disaient les bergers. | 18 and all who heard it wondered at what the shepherds told them. |
| 19 Quant à Marie, elle conservait avec soin toutes ces choses, les méditant en son coeur. | 19 But Mary kept all these things, pondering them in her heart. |
| 20 Puis les bergers s'en retournèrent, glorifiant et louant Dieu pour tout ce qu'ils avaient entendu et vu,suivant ce qui leur avait été annoncé. | 20 And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them. |
| 21 Et lorsque furent accomplis les huit jours pour sa circoncision, il fut appelé du nom de Jésus, nomindiqué par l'ange avant sa conception. | 21 And at the end of eight days, when he was circumcised, he was called Jesus, the name given by the angel before he was conceived in the womb. |
| 22 Et lorsque furent accomplis les jours pour leur purification, selon la loi de Moïse, ils l'emmenèrent àJérusalem pour le présenter au Seigneur, | 22 And when the time came for their purification according to the law of Moses, they brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord |
| 23 selon qu'il est écrit dans la Loi du Seigneur: Tout garçon premier-né sera consacré au Seigneur, | 23 (as it is written in the law of the Lord, "Every male that opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord") |

| 27 Il vint donc au Temple, poussé par l'Esprit, et quand les parents apportèrent le petit enfant Jésus pouraccomplir les prescriptions de la Loi à son égard, | 27 And inspired by the Spirit he came into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him according to the custom of the law, |
| 28 il le reçut dans ses bras, bénit Dieu et dit: | 28 he took him up in his arms and blessed God and said, |
| 29 "Maintenant, Souverain Maître, tu peux, selon ta parole, laisser ton serviteur s'en aller en paix; | 29 "Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word; |
| 30 car mes yeux ont vu ton salut, | 30 for mine eyes have seen thy salvation |
| 31 que tu as préparé à la face de tous les peuples, | 31 which thou hast prepared in the presence of all peoples, |
| 32 lumière pour éclairer les nations et gloire de ton peuple Israël." | 32 a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and for glory to thy people Israel." |
| 33 Son père et sa mère étaient dans l'étonnement de ce qui se disait de lui. | 33 And his father and his mother marveled at what was said about him; |
| 34 Syméon les bénit et dit à Marie, sa mère: "Vois! cet enfant doit amener la chute et le relèvement d'ungrand nombre en Israël; il doit être un signe en butte à la contradiction, -- | 34 and Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, "Behold, this child is set for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign that is spoken against |
| 35 et toi-même, une épée te transpercera l'âme! - afin que se révèlent les pensées intimes de bien descoeurs." | 35 (and a sword will pierce through your own soul also), that thoughts out of many hearts may be revealed." |
| 36 Il y avait aussi une prophétesse, Anne, fille de Phanouel, de la tribu d'Aser. Elle était fort avancée enâge. Après avoir, depuis sa virginité, vécu sept ans avec son mari, | 36 And there was a prophetess, Anna, the daughter of Phanu-el, of the tribe of Asher; she was of a great age, having lived with her husband seven years from her virginity, |
| 37 elle était restée veuve; parvenue à l'âge de 84 ans, elle ne quittait pas le Temple, servant Dieu nuit etjour dans le jeûne et la prière. | 37 and as a widow till she was eighty-four. She did not depart from the temple, worshiping with fasting and prayer night and day. |
| 38 Survenant à cette heure même, elle louait Dieu et parlait de l'enfant à tous ceux qui attendaient ladélivrance de Jérusalem. | 38 And coming up at that very hour she gave thanks to God, and spoke of him to all who were looking for the redemption of Jerusalem. |
| 39 Et quand ils eurent accompli tout ce qui était conforme à la Loi du Seigneur, ils retournèrent enGalilée, à Nazareth, leur ville. | 39 And when they had performed everything according to the law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee, to their own city, Nazareth. |
| 40 Cependant l'enfant grandissait, se fortifiait et se remplissait de sagesse. Et la grâce de Dieu était surlui. | 40 And the child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom; and the favor of God was upon him. |
| 41 Ses parents se rendaient chaque année à Jérusalem pour la fête de la Pâque. | 41 Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the Passover. |
| 42 Et lorsqu'il eut douze ans, ils y montèrent, comme c'était la coutume pour la fête. | 42 And when he was twelve years old, they went up according to custom; |
| 43 Une fois les jours écoulés, alors qu'ils s'en retournaient, l'enfant Jésus resta à Jérusalem à l'insu de sesparents. | 43 and when the feast was ended, as they were returning, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem. His parents did not know it, |
| 44 Le croyant dans la caravane, ils firent une journée de chemin, puis ils se mirent à le rechercher parmileurs parents et connaissances. | 44 but supposing him to be in the company they went a day's journey, and they sought him among their kinsfolk and acquaintances; |
| 45 Ne l'ayant pas trouvé, ils revinrent, toujours à sa recherche, à Jérusalem. | 45 and when they did not find him, they returned to Jerusalem, seeking him. |
| 46 Et il advint, au bout de trois jours, qu'ils le trouvèrent dans le Temple, assis au milieu des docteurs, lesécoutant et les interrogeant; | 46 After three days they found him in the temple, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions; |
| 47 et tous ceux qui l'entendaient étaient stupéfaits de son intelligence et de ses réponses. | 47 and all who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers. |
| 48 A sa vue, ils furent saisis d'émotion, et sa mère lui dit: "Mon enfant, pourquoi nous as-tu fait cela?Vois! ton père et moi, nous te cherchons, angoissés." | 48 And when they saw him they were astonished; and his mother said to him, "Son, why have you treated us so? Behold, your father and I have been looking for you anxiously." |
| 49 Et il leur dit: "Pourquoi donc me cherchiez-vous? Ne saviez-vous pas que je dois être dans la maisonde mon Père?" | 49 And he said to them, "How is it that you sought me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father's house?" |
| 50 Mais eux ne comprirent pas la parole qu'il venait de leur dire. | 50 And they did not understand the saying which he spoke to them. |
| 51 Il redescendit alors avec eux et revint à Nazareth; et il leur était soumis. Et sa mère gardait fidèlementtoutes ces choses en son coeur. | 51 And he went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was obedient to them; and his mother kept all these things in her heart. |
| 52 Quant à Jésus, il croissait en sagesse, en taille et en grâce devant Dieu et devant les hommes. | 52 And Jesus increased in wisdom and in stature, and in favor with God and man. |
