Évangile selon Matthieu 26

JERUSALEM	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Et il advint, quand Jésus eut achevé tous ces discours, qu'il dit à ses disciples:	1 Jesus had now finished al he wanted to say, and he told his disciples,
2 "La Pâque, vous le savez, tombe dans deux jours, et le Fils de l'homme va être livré pour êtrecrucifié."	2 'It wil be Passover, as you know, in two days' time, and the Son of man wil be handed over to becrucified.'
3 Alors les grands prêtres et les anciens du peuple s'assemblèrent dans le palais du Grand Prêtre,qui s'appelait Caïphe,	3 Then the chief priests and the elders of the people assembled in the palace of the high priest, whosename was Caiaphas,
4 et se concertèrent en vue d'arrêter Jésus par ruse et de le tuer.	4 and made plans to arrest Jesus by some trick and have him put to death.
5 Ils disaient toutefois: "Pas en pleine fête; il faut éviter un tumulte parmi le peuple."	5 They said, however, 'It must not be during the festivities; there must be no disturbance among thepeople.'
6 Comme Jésus se trouvait à Béthanie, chez Simon le lépreux,	6 Jesus was at Bethany in the house of Simon, a man who had suffered from a virulent skin-disease,when
7 une femme s'approcha de lui, avec un flacon d'albâtre contenant un parfum très précieux, et ellele versa sur sa tête, tandis qu'il était à table.	7 a woman came to him with an alabaster jar of very expensive ointment, and poured it on his head ashe was at table.
8 A cette vue les disciples furent indignés: "A quoi bon ce gaspillage? Dirent-ils;	8 When they saw this, the disciples said indignantly, 'Why this waste?
9 cela pouvait être vendu bien cher et donné à des pauvres."	9 This could have been sold for a high price and the money given the poor.'
10 Jésus s'en aperçut et leur dit: "Pourquoi tracassez-vous cette femme? C'est vraiment une bonneoeuvre qu'elle a accomplie pour moi.	10 But Jesus noticed this and said, 'Why are you upsetting the woman? What she has done for me isindeed a good work!
11 Les pauvres, en effet, vous les aurez toujours avec vous, mais moi, vous ne m'aurez pastoujours.	11 You have the poor with you always, but you wil not always have me.
12 Si elle a répandu ce parfum sur mon corps, c'est pour m'ensevelir qu'elle l'a fait.	12 When she poured this ointment on my body, she did it to prepare me for burial.
13 En vérité je vous le dis, partout où sera proclamé cet Evangile, dans le monde entier, on rediraaussi, à sa mémoire, ce qu'elle vient de faire."	13 In truth I tel you, wherever in al the world this gospel is proclaimed, what she has done will be toldas well, in remembrance of her.'
14 Alors l'un des Douze, appelé Judas Iscariote, se rendit auprès des grands prêtres	14 Then one of the Twelve, the man cal ed Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests
15 et leur dit: "Que voulez-vous me donner, et moi je vous le livrerai?" Ceux-ci lui versèrent 30pièces d'argent.	15 and said, 'What are you prepared to give me if I hand him over to you?' They paid him thirty silverpieces,
16 Et de ce moment il cherchait une occasion favorable pour le livrer.	16 and from then onwards he began to look for an opportunity to betray him.
17 Le premier jour des Azymes, les disciples s'approchèrent de Jésus et lui dirent: "Où veux-tu quenous te préparions de quoi manger la Pâque?"	17 Now on the first day of Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus to say, 'Where do you want usto make the preparations for you to eat the Passover?'
18 Il dit: "Allez à la ville, chez un tel, et dites-lui: Le Maître te fait dire: Mon temps est proche,c'est chez toi que je vais faire la Pâque avec mes disciples."	18 He said, 'Go to a certain man in the city and say to him, "The Master says: My time is near. It is atyour house that I am keeping Passover with my disciples." '
19 Les disciples firent comme Jésus leur avait ordonné et préparèrent la Pâque.	19 The disciples did what Jesus told them and prepared the Passover.
20 Le soir venu, il était à table avec les Douze.	20 When evening came he was at table with the Twelve.
21 Et tandis qu'ils mangeaient, il dit: "En vérité je vous le dis, l'un de vous me livrera."	21 And while they were eating he said, 'In truth I tell you, one of you is about to betray me.'
22 Fort attristés, ils se mirent chacun à lui dire: "Serait-ce moi, Seigneur?"	22 They were greatly distressed and started asking him in turn, 'Not me, Lord, surely?'
23 Il répondit: "Quelqu'un qui a plongé avec moi la main dans le plat, voilà celui qui va me livrer!	23 He answered, 'Someone who has dipped his hand into the dish with me wil betray me.
24 Le Fils de l'homme s'en va selon qu'il est écrit de lui; mais malheur à cet homme-là par qui leFils de l'homme est livré! Mieux eût valu pour cet homme-là de ne pas naître!"	24 The Son of man is going to his fate, as the scriptures say he will, but alas for that man by whom theSon of man is betrayed! Better for that man if he had never been born!'
25 A son tour, Judas, celui qui allait le livrer, lui demanda: "Serait-ce moi, Rabbi" - "Tu l'as dit",répond Jésus.	25 Judas, who was to betray him, asked in his turn, 'Not me, Rabbi, surely?' Jesus answered, 'It is youwho say it.'
26 Or, tandis qu'ils mangeaient, Jésus prit du pain, le bénit, le rompit et le donna aux disciples endisant: "Prenez, mangez, ceci est mon corps."	26 Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had said the blessing he broke it and gaveit to the disciples. 'Take it and eat,' he said, 'this is my body.'
27 Puis, prenant une coupe, il rendit grâces et la leur donna en disant: "Buvez-en tous;	27 Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he handed it to them saying, 'Drink from this, allof you,
28 car ceci est mon sang, le sang de l'alliance, qui va être répandu pour une multitude en rémissiondes péchés.	28 for this is my blood, the blood of the covenant, poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.
29 Je vous le dis, je ne boirai plus désormais de ce produit de la vigne jusqu'au jour où je le boiraiavec vous, nouveau, dans le Royaume de mon Père."	29 From now on, I tel you, I shal never again drink wine until the day I drink the new wine with you inthe kingdom of my Father.'
30 Après le chant desMatthieu Psaumes, ils partirent pour le mont des Oliviers.	30 After the psalms had been sung they left for the Mount of Olives.
31 Alors Jésus leur dit: "Vous tous, vous allez succomber à cause de moi, cette nuit même. Il estécrit en effet: Je frapperai le pasteur, et les brebis du troupeau seront dispersées.	31 Then Jesus said to them, 'You wil al fall away from me tonight, for the scripture says: I shal strikethe shepherd and the sheep of the flock will be scattered,
32 Mais après ma résurrection je vous précéderai en Galilée."	32 but after my resurrection I shal go ahead of you to Galilee.'
33 Prenant la parole, Pierre lui dit: "Si tous succombent à cause de toi, moi je ne succomberaijamais."	33 At this, Peter said to him, 'Even if al fal away from you, I wil never fal away.'
34 Jésus lui répliqua: "En vérité je te le dis: cette nuit même, avant que le coq chante, tu m'aurasrenié trois fois."	34 Jesus answered him, 'In truth I tel you, this very night, before the cock crows, you will have disownedme three times.'
35 Pierre lui dit: "Dussé-je mourir avec toi, non, je ne te renierai pas." Et tous les disciples en direntautant.	35 Peter said to him, 'Even if I have to die with you, I wil never disown you.' And al the disciples saidthe same.
36 Alors Jésus parvient avec eux à un domaine appelé Gethsémani, et il dit aux disciples: "Restezici, tandis que je m'en irai prier là-bas."	36 Then Jesus came with them to a plot of land called Gethsemane; and he said to his disciples, 'Stayhere while I go over there to pray.'
37 Et prenant avec lui Pierre et les deux fils de Zébédée, il commença à ressentir tristesse etangoisse.	37 He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee with him. And he began to feel sadness and anguish.
38 Alors il leur dit: "Mon âme est triste à en mourir, demeurez ici et veillez avec moi."	38 Then he said to them, 'My soul is sorrowful to the point of death. Wait here and stay awake with me.'
39 Etant allé un peu plus loin, il tomba face contre terre en faisant cette prière: "Mon Père, s'il estpossible, que cette coupe passe loin de moi! Cependant, non pas comme je veux, mais comme tu veux."	39 And going on a little further he fel on his face and prayed. 'My Father,' he said, 'if it is possible, letthis cup pass me by. Nevertheless, let it be as you, not I, would have it.'
40 Il vient vers les disciples et les trouve en train de dormir; et il dit à Pierre: "Ainsi, vous n'avezpas eu la force de veiller une heure avec moi!	40 He came back to the disciples and found them sleeping, and he said to Peter, 'So you had not thestrength to stay awake with me for one hour?
41 Veillez et priez pour ne pas entrer en tentation: l'esprit est ardent, mais la chair est faible."	41 Stay awake, and pray not to be put to the test. The spirit is willing enough, but human nature isweak.'
42 A nouveau, pour la deuxième fois, il s'en alla prier: "Mon Père, dit-il, si cette coupe ne peutpasser sans que je la boive, que ta volonté soit faite!"	42 Again, a second time, he went away and prayed: 'My Father,' he said, 'if this cup cannot pass by, butI must drink it, your wil be done!'
43 Puis il vint et les trouva à nouveau en train de dormir; car leurs yeux étaient appesantis.	43 And he came back again and found them sleeping, their eyes were so heavy.
44 Il les laissa et s'en alla de nouveau prier une troisième fois, répétant les mêmes paroles.	44 Leaving them there, he went away again and prayed for the third time, repeating the same words.
45 Alors il vient vers les disciples et leur dit: "Désormais vous pouvez dormir et vous reposer: voicitoute proche l'heure où le Fils de l'homme va être livré aux mains des pécheurs.	45 Then he came back to the disciples and said to them, 'You can sleep on now and have your rest.Look, the hour has come when the Son of man is to be betrayed into the hands of sinners.
46 Levez-vous! Allons! Voici tout proche celui qui me livre."	46 Get up! Let us go! Look, my betrayer is not far away.'
47 Comme il parlait encore, voici Judas, l'un des Douze, et avec lui une bande nombreuse armée deglaives et de bâtons, envoyée par les grands prêtres et les anciens du peuple.	47 And suddenly while he was stil speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, appeared, and with him a largenumber of men armed with swords and clubs, sent by the chief priests and elders of the people.
48 Or le traître leur avait donné ce signe: "Celui à qui je donnerai un baiser, c'est lui; arrêtez-le."	48 Now the traitor had arranged a sign with them saying, 'The one I kiss, he is the man. Arrest him.'
49 Et aussitôt il s'approcha de Jésus en disant: "Salut, Rabbi", et il lui donna un baiser.	49 So he went up to Jesus at once and said, 'Greetings, Rabbi,' and kissed him.
50 Mais Jésus lui dit: "Ami, fais ta besogne." Alors, s'avançant, ils mirent la main sur Jésus etl'arrêtèrent.	50 Jesus said to him, 'My friend, do what you are here for.' Then they came forward, seized Jesus andarrested him.
51 Et voilà qu'un des compagnons de Jésus, portant la main à son glaive, le dégaina, frappa leserviteur du Grand Prêtre et lui enleva l'oreille.	51 And suddenly, one of the fol owers of Jesus grasped his sword and drew it; he struck the high priest'sservant and cut off his ear.
52 Alors Jésus lui dit: "Rengaine ton glaive; car tous ceux qui prennent le glaive périront par leglaive.	52 Jesus then said, 'Put your sword back, for al who draw the sword wil die by the sword.
53 Penses-tu donc que je ne puisse faire appel à mon Père, qui me fournirait sur-le-champ plus dedouze légions d'anges?	53 Or do you think that I cannot appeal to my Father, who would promptly send more than twelvelegions of angels to my defence?
54 Comment alors s'accompliraient les Ecritures d'après lesquelles il doit en être ainsi?"	54 But then, how would the scriptures be fulfil ed that say this is the way it must be?'
55 A ce moment-là Jésus dit aux foules: "Suis-je un brigand, que vous vous soyez mis encampagne avec des glaives et des bâtons pour me saisir? Chaque jour j'étais assis dans le Temple, à enseigner, etvous ne m'avez pas arrêté."	55 It was at this time that Jesus said to the crowds, 'Am I a bandit, that you had to set out to capture mewith swords and clubs? I sat teaching in the Temple day after day and you never laid a hand on me.'
56 Or tout ceci advint pour que s'accomplissent les Ecritures des prophètes. Alors les disciplesl'abandonnèrent tous et prirent la fuite.	56 Now al this happened to fulfil the prophecies in scripture. Then al the disciples deserted him and ranaway.
57 Ceux qui avaient arrêté Jésus l'emmenèrent chez Caïphe le Grand Prêtre, où se réunirent lesscribes et les anciens.	57 The men who had arrested Jesus led him off to the house of Caiaphas the high priest, where thescribes and the elders were assembled.
58 Quant à Pierre, il le suivait de loin, jusqu'au palais du Grand Prêtre; il pénétra à l'intérieur ets'assit avec les valets, pour voir le dénouement.	58 Peter followed him at a distance right to the high priest's palace, and he went in and sat down withthe attendants to see what the end would be.
59 Or, les grands prêtres et le Sanhédrin tout entier cherchaient un faux témoignage contre Jésus,en vue de le faire mourir;	59 The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for evidence against Jesus, however false,on which they might have him executed.
60 et ils n'en trouvèrent pas, bien que des faux témoins se fussent présentés en grand nombre.Finalement il s'en présenta deux,	60 But they could not find any, though several lying witnesses came forward. Eventually two cameforward
61 qui déclarèrent: "Cet homme a dit: Je puis détruire le Sanctuaire de Dieu et le rebâtir en troisjours."	61 and made a statement, 'This man said, "I have power to destroy the Temple of God and in three daysbuild it up." '
62 Se levant alors, le Grand Prêtre lui dit: "Tu ne réponds rien? Qu'est-ce que ces gens attestentcontre toi?"	62 The high priest then rose and said to him, 'Have you no answer to that? What is this evidence thesemen are bringing against you?'
63 Mais Jésus se taisait. Le Grand Prêtre lui dit: "Je t'adjure par le Dieu Vivant de nous dire si tu esle Christ, le Fils de Dieu" --	63 But Jesus was silent. And the high priest said to him, 'I put you on oath by the living God to tel us ifyou are the Christ, the Son of God.'
64 "Tu l'as dit, lui dit Jésus. D'ailleurs je vous le déclare: dorénavant, vous verrez le Fils del'homme siégeant à droite de la Puissance et venant sur les nuées du ciel."	64 Jesus answered him, 'It is you who say it. But, I tel you that from this time onward you wil see theSon of man seated at the right hand of the Power and coming on the clouds of heaven.'
65 Alors le Grand Prêtre déchira ses vêtements en disant: "Il a blasphémé! qu'avons-nous encorebesoin de témoins? Là, vous venez d'entendre le blasphème!	65 Then the high priest tore his clothes and said, 'He has blasphemed. What need of witnesses have wenow? There! You have just heard the blasphemy.
66 Qu'en pensez-vous?" Ils répondirent: "Il est passible de mort."	66 What is your opinion?' They answered, 'He deserves to die.'
67 Alors ils lui crachèrent au visage et le giflèrent; d'autres lui donnèrent des coups	67 Then they spat in his face and hit him with their fists; others said as they struck him,
68 en disant: "Fais le prophète, Christ, dis-nous qui t'a frappé."	68 'Prophesy to us, Christ! Who hit you then?'
69 Cependant Pierre était assis dehors, dans la cour. Une servante s'approcha de lui en disant: "Toiaussi, tu étais avec Jésus le Galiléen."	69 Meanwhile Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard, and a servant-girl came up to him saying, 'You,too, were with Jesus the Galilean.'
70 Mais lui nia devant tout le monde en disant: "Je ne sais pas ce que tu dis."	70 But he denied it in front of them al . 'I do not know what you are talking about,' he said.
71 Comme il s'était retiré vers le porche, une autre le vit et dit à ceux qui étaient là: "Celui-là étaitavec Jésus le Nazôréen."	71 When he went out to the gateway another servant-girl saw him and said to the people there, 'Thisman was with Jesus the Nazarene.'
72 Et de nouveau il nia avec serment: "Je ne connais pas cet homme."	72 And again, with an oath, he denied it, 'I do not know the man.'
73 Peu après, ceux qui se tenaient là s'approchèrent et dirent à Pierre: "Sûrement, toi aussi, tu en es:et d'ailleurs ton langage te trahit."	73 A little later the bystanders came up and said to Peter, 'You are certainly one of them too! Why, youraccent gives you away.'
74 Alors il se mit à jurer avec force imprécations: "Je ne connais pas cet homme." Et aussitôt uncoq chanta.	74 Then he started cursing and swearing, 'I do not know the man.' And at once the cock crowed,
75 Et Pierre se souvint de la parole que Jésus avait dite: "Avant que le coq chante, tu m'auras reniétrois fois." Et, sortant dehors, il pleura amèrement.	75 and Peter remembered what Jesus had said, 'Before the cock crows you wil have disowned methree times.' And he went outside and wept bitterly.
