1 Balaam dit à Balaq: "Bâtis-moi ici sept autels, et fournis-moi ici sept taureaux et sept béliers."	1 Then Balaam said to Balak, "Build me seven altars, and prepare seven bullocks and seven rams for me here."
2 Balaq fit comme avait dit Balaam et offrit en holocauste un taureau et un bélier sur chaque autel.	2 So he did as Balaam had ordered, offering a bullock and a ram on each altar. And Balak said to him, "I have erected the seven altars, and have offered a bullock and a ram on each."
3 Balaam dit alors à Balaq: "Tiens-toi debout près de tes holocaustes tandis que j'irai. Peut-êtreYahvé fera-t-il que je le rencontre? Ce qu'il me fera voir, je te le révélerai." Et il s'en alla sur une une collinedénudée.	3 Balaam then said to him, "Stand here by your holocaust while I go over there. Perhaps the LORD will meet me, and then I will tell you whatever he lets me see." He went out on the barren height,
4 Or Dieu vint à la rencontre de Balaam, qui lui dit: "J'ai disposé les sept autels et j'ai offert enholocauste un taureau et un bélier sur chaque autel."	4 and God met him.
5 Yahvé lui mit alors une parole dans la bouche, et lui dit: "Retourne auprès de Balaq et c'est ainsique tu parleras."	5 When he had put an utterance in Balaam's mouth, the LORD said to him, "Go back to Balak, and speak accordingly."
6 Balaam retourna donc auprès de lui; il le trouva toujours debout près de son holocauste, avec tousles princes de Moab.	6 So he went back to Balak, who was still standing by his holocaust together with all the princes of Moab.
7 Il prononça son poème: "Balaq me fait venir d'Aram, le roi de Moab, des monts de Qédem:Viens, maudis-moi Jacob, viens, fulmine contre Israël.	7 Then Balaam gave voice to his oracle: From Aram has Balak brought me here, Moab's king, from the Eastern Mountains: "Come and lay a curse for me on Jacob, come and denounce Israel."
8 Comment maudirais-je quand Dieu ne maudit pas? Comment fulminerais-je quand Dieu nefulmine pas?	8 How can I curse whom God has not cursed? How denounce whom the LORD has not denounced?
9 Oui, de la crête du rocher je le vois, du haut des collines je le regarde. Voici un peuple qui habiteà part, il n'est pas rangé parmi les nations.	9 For from the top of the crags I see him, from the heights I behold him. Here is a people that lives apart and does not reckon itself among the nations.
10 Qui pourrait compter la poussière de Jacob? Qui pourrait dénombrer la nuée d'Israël? Puissé-jemourir de la mort des justes! Puisse ma fin être comme la leur!"	10 Who has ever counted the dust of Jacob, or numbered Israel's wind-borne particles? May I die the death of the just, may my descendants be as many as theirs!
11 Balaq dit à Balaam: "Que m'as-tu fait! Je t'avais pris pour maudire mes ennemis et tu prononcessur eux des bénédictions!"	11 "What have you done to me?" cried Balak to Balaam. "It was to curse my foes that I brought you here; instead, you have even blessed them."
12 Balaam reprit: "Ne dois-je pas prendre soin de dire ce que Yahvé me met dans la bouche?"	12 Balaam replied, "Is it not what the LORD puts in my mouth that I must repeat with care?"
13 Balaq lui dit: "Viens donc ailleurs avec moi. Ce peuple que tu vois d'ici, tu n'en vois qu'uneextrémité, tu ne le vois pas tout entier. Maudis-le-moi de là-bas."	13 Then Balak said to him, "Please come with me to another place from which you can see only some and not all of them, and from there curse them for me."
14 Il l'emmena au Champ des Guetteurs, vers le sommet du Pisga. Il y bâtit sept autels et offrit enholocauste un taureau et un bélier sur chaque autel.	14 So he brought him to the lookout field on the top of Pisgah, where he built seven altars and offered a bullock and a ram on each of them.
15 Balaam dit à Balaq: "Tiens-toi debout près de tes holocaustes, tandis que moi j'irai attendre."	15 Balaam then said to Balak, "Stand here by your holocaust, while I seek a meeting over there."
16 Dieu vint à la rencontre de Balaam, il lui mit une parole dans la bouche et lui dit: "Retourneauprès de Balaq, et c'est ainsi que tu parleras."	16 Then the LORD met Balaam, and having put an utterance in his mouth, he said to him, "Go back to Balak, and speak accordingly."
17 Il retourna donc auprès de Balaq; il le trouva toujours debout près de ses holocaustes, avec tousles princes de Moab. "Qu'a dit Yahvé?" Lui demanda Balaq.	17 So he went back to Balak, who was still standing by his holocaust together with the princes of Moab. When Balak asked him, "What did the LORD say?"
18 Et Balaam prononça son poème: "Lève-toi, Balaq, et écoute, prête-moi l'oreille, fils de Cippor.	18 Balaam gave voice to his oracle: Be aroused, O Balak, and hearken; give ear to my testimony, O son of Zippor!
19 Dieu n'est pas homme, pour qu'il mente, ni fils d'Adam, pour qu'il se rétracte. Est-ce lui qui ditet ne fait pas, qui parle et n'accomplit pas?	19 God is not man that he should speak falsely, nor human, that he should change his mind. Is he one to speak and not act, to decree and not fulfill?
20 J'ai reçu la charge d'une bénédiction, je bénirai et je ne me reprendrai pas.	20 It is a blessing I have been given to pronounce; a blessing which I cannot restrain.
21 Je n'ai pas aperçu de mal en Jacob ni vu de souffrance en Israël. Yahvé son Dieu est avec lui;chez lui retentit l'acclamation royale.	21 Misfortune is not observed in Jacob, nor misery seen in Israel. The LORD, his God, is with him; with him is the triumph of his King.
22 Dieu le fait sortir d'Egypte, Il est pour lui comme des cornes de buffle.	22 It is God who brought him out of Egypt, a wild bull of towering might.
23 Car il n'y a pas de présage contre Jacob ni d'augure contre Israël. Alors même que l'on dit àJacob et à Israël: "Que fait donc Dieu?"	23 No, there is no sorcery against Jacob, nor omen against Israel. It shall yet be said of Jacob, and of Israel, "Behold what God has wrought!"
24 Voici qu'un peuple se dresse comme une lionne, qu'il surgit comme un lion: il ne se couche pas,qu'il n'ait dévoré sa proie et bu le sang de ceux qu'il a tués."	24 Here is a people that springs up like a lioness, and stalks forth like a lion; It rests not till it has devoured its prey and has drunk the blood of the slain.
25 Balaq dit à Balaam: "Ne le maudis pas, soit! Du moins, ne le bénis pas!"	25 "Even though you cannot curse them," said Balak to Balaam, "at least do not bless them."
26 Balaam répondit à Balaq: "Ne t'avais-je pas dit: Tout ce que Yahvé dira, je le ferai?"	26 But Balaam answered Balak, "Did I not warn you that I must do all that the LORD tells me?"
27 Balaq dit à Balaam: "Viens donc, que je t'emmène ailleurs. Et là, peut-être Dieu trouvera bon dele maudire."	27 Then Balak said to Balaam, "Come, let me bring you to another place; perhaps God will approve of your cursing them for me from there."
28 Balaq emmena Balaam au sommet du Péor, qui domine le désert.	28 So he took Balaam to the top of Peor, that overlooks Jeshimon.
29 Balaam dit alors à Balaq: "Bâtis-moi ici sept autels et fournis-moi ici sept taureaux et septbéliers."	29 Balaam then said to him, "Here build me seven altars; and here prepare for me seven bullocks and seven rams."
30 Balaq fit comme avait dit Balaam et offrit en holocauste un taureau et un bélier sur chaqueautel.	30 And Balak did as Balaam had ordered, offering a bullock and a ram on each altar.
