| 2 De Lakish, le roi d'Assyrie envoya vers le roi Ezéchias, à Jérusalem, le grand échanson avec unimportant corps de troupes. Le grand échanson se posta près du canal de la piscine supérieure, sur le chemin duchamp du Foulon. | 2 And the king of Assyria sent the Rabshakeh from Lachish to King Hezekiah at Jerusalem, with a great army. And he stood by the conduit of the upper pool on the highway to the Fuller's Field. |
| 3 Le maître du palais Elyaqim, fils de Hilqiyyahu, le secrétaire Shebna et le héraut Yoah, fils d'Asaph,sortirent à sa rencontre. | 3 And there came out to him Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, who was over the household, and Shebna the secretary, and Joah the son of Asaph, the recorder. |
| 4 Le grand échanson leur dit: "Dites à Ezéchias: Ainsi parle le grand roi, le roi d'Assyrie: Quelle estcette confiance sur laquelle tu te reposes? | 4 And the Rabshakeh said to them, "Say to Hezekiah, 'Thus says the great king, the king of Assyria: On what do you rest this confidence of yours? |
| 5 Tu t'imagines que paroles en l'air valent conseil et vaillance pour faire la guerre. En quoi donc mets-tuta confiance pour t'être révolté contre moi? | 5 Do you think that mere words are strategy and power for war? On whom do you now rely, that you have rebelled against me? |
| 6 Voici que tu te fies au soutien de ce roseau brisé, l'Egypte, qui pénètre et perce la main de qui s'appuiesur lui. Tel est Pharaon, roi d'Egypte, pour tous ceux qui se fient à lui. | 6 Behold, you are relying on Egypt, that broken reed of a staff, which will pierce the hand of any man who leans on it. Such is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all who rely on him. |
| 7 Vous me direz peut-être: c'est en Yahvé notre Dieu que nous avons confiance, mais n'est-ce pas luidont Ezéchias a supprimé les hauts lieux et les autels en disant aux gens de Juda et de Jérusalem: C'est devant cetautel que vous vous prosternerez? | 7 But if you say to me, "We rely on the LORD our God," is it not he whose high places and altars Hezekiah has removed, saying to Judah and to Jerusalem, "You shall worship before this altar"? |
| 8 Eh bien! fais un pari avec Monseigneur le roi d'Assyrie: je te donnerai 2.000 chevaux si tu peuxtrouver des cavaliers pour les monter. | 8 Come now, make a wager with my master the king of Assyria: I will give you two thousand horses, if you are able on your part to set riders upon them. |
| 9 Comment ferais-tu reculer un seul des moindres serviteurs de mon maître? Mais tu t'es fié à l'Egyptepour avoir chars et cavaliers! | 9 How then can you repulse a single captain among the least of my master's servants, when you rely on Egypt for chariots and for horsemen? |
| 10 Et puis, est-ce sans la volonté de Yahvé que je suis monté contre ce pays pour le dévaster? C'estYahvé qui m'a dit: Monte contre ce pays et dévaste-le!" | 10 Moreover, is it without the LORD that I have come up against this land to destroy it? The LORD said to me, Go up against this land, and destroy it.'" |
| 11 Elyaqim, Shebna et Yoah dirent au grand échanson: "Je t'en prie, parle à tes serviteurs en araméen,car nous l'entendons, ne nous parle pas en judéen à portée des oreilles du peuple qui est sur les remparts." | 11 Then Eliakim, Shebna, and Joah said to the Rabshakeh, "Pray, speak to your servants in Aramaic, for we understand it; do not speak to us in the language of Judah within the hearing of the people who are on the wall." |
| 12 Mais le grand échanson dit: "Est-ce à toi ou à ton maître que Monseigneur m'a envoyé dire ceschoses? N'est-ce pas plutôt aux gens assis sur le rempart et condamnés à manger leurs excréments et à boire leururine avec vous?" | 12 But the Rabshakeh said, "Has my master sent me to speak these words to your master and to you, and not to the men sitting on the wall, who are doomed with you to eat their own dung and drink their own urine?" |
| 13 Alors le grand échanson se tint debout, il cria d'une voix forte, en langue judéenne, et dit: "Ecoutezles paroles du grand roi, le roi d'Assyrie! | 13 Then the Rabshakeh stood and called out in a loud voice in the language of Judah: "Hear the words of the great king, the king of Assyria! |
| 14 Ainsi parle le roi: Qu'Ezéchias ne vous abuse pas! Il ne pourra vous délivrer. | 14 Thus says the king: 'Do not let Hezekiah deceive you, for he will not be able to deliver you. |
| 15 Qu'Ezéchias n'entretienne pas votre confiance en Yahvé en disant: Sûrement Yahvé nous délivrera,cette ville ne tombera pas entre les mains du roi d'Assyrie. | 15 Do not let Hezekiah make you rely on the LORD by saying, "The LORD will surely deliver us; this city will not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria." |
| 16 N'écoutez pas Ezéchias, car ainsi parle le roi d'Assyrie: Faites la paix avec moi, rendez-vous à moi,et chacun de vous mangera le fruit de sa vigne et de son figuier, chacun boira l'eau de sa citerne, | 16 Do not listen to Hezekiah; for thus says the king of Assyria: Make your peace with me and come out to me; then every one of you will eat of his own vine, and every one of his own fig tree, and every one of you will drink the water of his own cistern; |
| 17 jusqu'à ce que je vienne et que je vous emmène vers un pays comme le vôtre, un pays de froment etde moût, un pays de pain et de vignobles. | 17 until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of grain and wine, a land of bread and vineyards. |
| 18 Qu'Ezéchias ne vous abuse pas en vous disant: Yahvé nous délivrera. Les dieux des nations ont-ilsvraiment délivré chacun son pays des mains du roi d'Assyrie? | 18 Beware lest Hezekiah mislead you by saying, "The LORD will deliver us." Has any of the gods of the nations delivered his land out of the hand of the king of Assyria? |
| 19 Où sont les dieux de Hamat et d'Arpad, où sont les dieux de Sepharvayim, où sont les dieux du paysde Samarie? Ont-ils délivré Samarie de ma main? | 19 Where are the gods of Hamath and Arpad? Where are the gods of Sepharvaim? Have they delivered Samaria out of my hand? |
| 20 Parmi tous les dieux de ces pays, lesquels ont délivré leur pays de ma main, pour que Yahvé délivreJérusalem?" | 20 Who among all the gods of these countries have delivered their countries out of my hand, that the LORD should deliver Jerusalem out of my hand?" |
| 21 Ils gardèrent le silence et ne lui répondirent pas un mot, car tel était l'ordre du roi: "Vous ne luirépondrez pas." | 21 But they were silent and answered him not a word, for the king's command was, "Do not answer him." |
| 22 Le maître du palais Elyaqim, fils de Hilqiyyahu, le secrétaire Shebna et le héraut Yoah, fils d'Asaph,vinrent auprès d'Ezéchias, les vêtements déchirés, et ils lui rapportèrent les paroles du grand échanson. | 22 Then Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, who was over the household, and Shebna the secretary, and Joah the son of Asaph, the recorder, came to Hezekiah with their clothes rent, and told him the words of the Rabshakeh. |
