JERUSALEM	NEW JERUSALEM
1 "Voici les lois que tu leur donneras.	1 'These are the laws you must give them:
2 Lorsque tu acquerras un esclave hébreu, son service durera six ans, la septième année il s'en ira,libre, sans rien payer.	2 'When you buy a Hebrew slave, his service will last for six years. In the seventh year he wil leave afree man without paying compensation.
3 S'il est venu seul, il s'en ira seul, et s'il était marié, sa femme s'en ira avec lui.	3 If he came single, he wil depart single; if he came married, his wife wil depart with him.
4 Si son maître le marie et que sa femme lui donne des fils ou des filles, la femme et ses enfantsresteront la propriété du maître et lui s'en ira seul.	4 If his master gives him a wife and she bears him sons or daughters, the wife and her children wilbelong to her master, and he wil depart alone.
5 Mais si l'esclave dit: J'aime mon maître, ma femme et mes enfants, je ne veux pas être libéré,	5 But if the slave says, "I love my master and my wife and children; I do not wish to be freed,"
6 son maître le fera s'approcher de Dieu, il le fera s'approcher du vantail ou du montant de la porte; illui percera l'oreille avec un poinçon et l'esclave sera pour toujours à son service.	6 then his master wil bring him before God and then, leading him to the door or the doorpost, his masterwil pierce his ear with an awl, and the slave wil be permanently his.
7 Si quelqu'un vend sa fille comme servante, elle ne s'en ira pas comme s'en vont les esclaves.	7 If a man sel s his daughter as a slave, she wil not leave as male slaves do.
8 Si elle déplaît à son maître qui se l'était destinée, il la fera racheter; il ne pourra la vendre à unpeuple étranger, usant ainsi de fraude envers elle.	8 If she does not please her master who intended her for himself, he must let her be bought back: hehas not the right to sell her to foreigners, for this would be a breach of faith with her.
9 S'il la destine à son fils, il la traitera selon la coutume en vigueur pour les filles.	9 If he intends her for his son, he must treat her as custom requires daughters to be treated.
10 S'il prend pour lui-même une autre femme, il ne diminuera pas la nourriture, le vêtement ni lesdroits conjugaux de la première.	10 If he takes another wife, he must not reduce the food, clothing or conjugal rights of the first one.
11 S'il la frustre de ces trois choses, elle s'en ira sans rien payer, sans verser d'argent.	11 Should he deprive her of these three things she wil leave a free woman, without payingcompensation.
12 "Quiconque frappe quelqu'un et cause sa mort sera mis à mort.	12 'Anyone who by violence causes a death must be put to death.
13 S'il ne l'a pas traqué mais que Dieu l'a mis à portée de sa main, je te fixerai un lieu où il pourra seréfugier.	13 If, however, he has not planned to do it but it comes from God by his hand, he can take refuge in aplace which I shal appoint for you.
14 Mais si un homme va jusqu'à en tuer un autre par ruse, tu l'arracheras même de mon autel pourqu'il soit mis à mort.	14 But should any person dare to kill another with deliberate planning, you wil take that person evenfrom my altar to be put to death.
15 Qui frappe son père ou sa mère sera mis à mort.	15 'Anyone who strikes father or mother wil be put to death.
16 Qui enlève un homme -- qu'il l'ait vendu ou qu'on le trouve en sa possession -- sera mis à mort.	16 Anyone who abducts a person -- whether that person has since been sold or is stil held -- wil be putto death.
17 Qui maudit son père ou sa mère sera mis à mort.	17 Anyone who curses father or mother will be put to death.
18 "Si des hommes se querellent et que l'un frappe l'autre avec une pierre ou avec le poing de tellesorte qu'il n'en meure pas mais doive garder le lit, s'il se relève et peut circuler dehors, fût-ce appuyé sur unbâton,	18 'If people quarrel and one strikes the other a blow with stone or fist so that the injured party, thoughnot dead, is confined to bed,
19 celui qui a frappé sera quitte, mais il devra le dédommager pour son immobilisation et le soignerjusqu'à sa guérison.	19 but later recovers and can go about, even with a stick, the one who struck the blow wil have noliability, other than to compensate the injured party for the enforced inactivity and to take care of the injured partyuntil the cure is complete.
20 Si quelqu'un frappe son esclave ou sa servante avec un bâton et que celui-ci meure sous sa main, ilsubira la vengeance.	20 'If someone beats his slave, male or female, and the slave dies at his hands, he must pay thepenalty.
21 Mais s'il survit un jour ou deux il ne sera pas vengé, car il a été acquis à prix d'argent.	21 But should the slave survive for one or two days, he will pay no penalty because the slave is his byright of purchase.
22 Si des hommes, en se battant, bousculent une femme enceinte et que celle-ci avorte mais sans autreaccident, le coupable paiera l'indemnité imposée par le maître de la femme, il paiera selon la décision desarbitres.	22 'If people, when brawling, hurt a pregnant woman and she suffers a miscarriage but no further harmis done, the person responsible wil pay compensation as fixed by the woman's master, paying as much as thejudges decide.
23 Mais s'il y a accident, tu donneras vie pour vie,	23 If further harm is done, however, you wil award life for life,
24 oeil pour oeil, dent pour dent, pied pour pied,	24 eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot,
25 brûlure pour brûlure, meurtrissure pour meurtrissure, plaie pour plaie.	25 burn for burn, wound for wound, stroke for stroke.
26 Si un homme frappe l'oeil de son esclave ou l'oeil de sa servante et l'éborgne, il lui rendra la libertéen compensation de son oeil.	26 'If anyone strikes the eye of his slave, male or female, and destroys the use of it, he wil give theslave his freedom to compensate for the eye.
27 Et s'il fait tomber une dent de son esclave ou une dent de sa servante, il lui rendra la liberté encompensation de sa dent.	27 If he knocks out the tooth of his slave, male or female, he wil give the slave his freedom tocompensate for the tooth.
28 Si un boeuf encorne un homme ou une femme et cause sa mort, le boeuf sera lapidé et l'on n'enmangera pas la viande, mais le propriétaire du boeuf sera quitte.	28 'If an ox gores a man or woman to death, the ox wil be stoned and its meat wil not be eaten, but theowner of the ox wil not be liable.
29 Mais si le boeuf donnait déjà de la corne auparavant, et que le propriétaire, averti de cela, ne l'a passurveillé, s'il cause la mort d'un homme ou d'une femme, ce boeuf sera lapidé et son propriétaire sera mis à mort.	29 But if the ox has been in the habit of goring before, and if its owner has been warned but has not keptit under control, then should this ox kil a man or woman, it wil be stoned and its owner put to death.
30 Si on lui impose une rançon, il devra donner pour le rachat de sa vie tout ce qui lui est imposé.	30 If a ransom is imposed on the owner, he wil pay whatever is imposed, to redeem his life.
31 Si c'est un garçon ou une fille qu'il encorne, on le traitera selon cette coutume.	31 If the ox gores a boy or a girl, it will be treated in accordance with this same rule.
32 Si c'est un esclave ou une servante que le boeuf encorne, son propriétaire versera le prix -- 30sicles -- à leur maître, et le boeuf sera lapidé.	32 If the ox gores a slave, male or female, its owner will pay the price -- thirty shekels -- to their master,and the ox will be stoned.
33 Si quelqu'un laisse une citerne ouverte, ou si quelqu'un creuse une citerne sans la couvrir et qu'unboeuf ou un âne y tombe,	33 'If anyone leaves a pit uncovered, or digs a pit and does not cover it, and an ox, or donkey fal s into it,
34 le propriétaire de la citerne indemnisera, il dédommagera en argent son propriétaire, et la bêtemorte sera pour lui.	34 then the owner of the pit will make good the loss by compensating its owner, and the dead animal willbe his.
35 Si le boeuf de quelqu'un frappe le boeuf d'autrui et cause sa mort, les propriétaires vendront leboeuf vivant et s'en partageront le prix, ils se partageront aussi la bête morte.	35 If anyone's ox injures anyone else's ox causing its death, the owners wil sel and share the moneyfor it; they will also share the dead animal.
36 Mais s'il est notoire que le boeuf donnait de la corne auparavant, et que son propriétaire ne l'a passurveillé, il donnera un boeuf vivant en compensation du boeuf mort, et la bête morte sera pour lui.	36 But if it is common knowledge that the ox has been in the habit of goring before, and its owner hasnot kept it under control, the owner wil repay ox for ox, and wil keep the dead animal.
37 "Si quelqu'un vole un boeuf ou un agneau puis l'abat et le vend, il rendra cinq têtes de gros bétailpour le boeuf et quatre têtes de petit bétail pour l'agneau.	37 'If anyone steals an ox or a sheep and slaughters or sel s it, he wil pay back five beasts from theherd for the ox, and four animals from the flock for the sheep.'
