1 Un homme de la maison de Lévi s'en alla prendre pour femme une fille de Lévi.	1 Now a certain man of the house of Levi married a Levite woman,
2 Celle-ci conçut et enfanta un fils. Voyant combien il était beau, elle le dissimula pendant trois mois.	2 who conceived and bore a son. Seeing that he was a goodly child, she hid him for three months.
3 Ne pouvant le dissimuler plus longtemps, elle prit pour lui une corbeille de papyrus qu'elle enduisitde bitume et de poix, y plaça l'enfant et la déposa dans les roseaux sur la rive du Fleuve.	3 When she could hide him no longer, she took a papyrus basket, daubed it with bitumen and pitch, and putting the child in it, placed it among the reeds on the river bank.
4 La soeur de l'enfant se posta à distance pour voir ce qui lui adviendrait.	4 His sister stationed herself at a distance to find out what would happen to him.
5 Or la fille de Pharaon descendit au Fleuve pour s'y baigner, tandis que ses servantes se promenaientsur la rive du Fleuve. Elle aperçut la corbeille parmi les roseaux et envoya sa servante la prendre.	5 Pharaoh's daughter came down to the river to bathe, while her maids walked along the river bank. Noticing the basket among the reeds, she sent her handmaid to fetch it.
6 Elle l'ouvrit et vit l'enfant: c'était un garçon qui pleurait. Touchée de compassion pour lui, elle dit:"C'est un des petits Hébreux."	6 On opening it, she looked, and lo, there was a baby boy, crying! She was moved with pity for him and said, "It is one of the Hebrews' children."
7 La soeur de l'enfant dit alors à la fille de Pharaon: "Veux-tu que j'aille te chercher, parmi les femmesdes Hébreux, une nourrice qui te nourrira cet enfant? --	7 Then his sister asked Pharaoh's daughter, "Shall I go and call one of the Hebrew women to nurse the child for you?"
8 Va", lui répondit la fille de Pharaon. La jeune fille alla donc chercher la mère de l'enfant.	8 "Yes, do so," she answered. So the maiden went and called the child's own mother.
9 La fille de Pharaon lui dit: "Emmène cet enfant et nourris-le moi, je te donnerai moi-même tonsalaire." Alors la femme emporta l'enfant et le nourrit.	9 Pharaoh's daughter said to her, "Take this child and nurse it for me, and I will repay you." The woman therefore took the child and nursed it.
10 Quand l'enfant eut grandi, elle le ramena à la fille de Pharaon qui le traita comme un fils et lui donnale nom de Moïse, car, disait-elle, "je l'ai tiré des eaux."	10 When the child grew, she brought him to Pharaoh's daughter, who adopted him as her son and called him Moses; for she said, "I drew him out of the water."
11 Il advint, en ces jours-là, que Moïse, qui avait grandi, alla voir ses frères. Il vit les corvéesauxquelles ils étaient astreints; il vit aussi un Egyptien qui frappait un Hébreu, un de ses frères.	11 On one occasion, after Moses had grown up, when he visited his kinsmen and witnessed their forced labor, he saw an Egyptian striking a Hebrew, one of his own kinsmen.
12 Il se tourna de-ci de-là, et voyant qu'il n'y avait personne, il tua l'Egyptien et le cacha dans le sable.	12 Looking about and seeing no one, he slew the Egyptian and hid him in the sand.
13 Le jour suivant, il revint alors que deux Hébreux se battaient. "Pourquoi frappes-tu toncompagnon?" Dit-il à l'agresseur.	13 The next day he went out again, and now two Hebrews were fighting! So he asked the culprit, "Why are you striking your fellow Hebrew?"
14 Celui-ci répondit: "Qui t'a constitué notre chef et notre juge? Veux-tu me tuer comme tu as tuél'Egyptien?" Moïse effrayé se dit: "Certainement l'affaire se sait."	14 But he replied, "Who has appointed you ruler and judge over us? Are you thinking of killing me as you killed the Egyptian?" Then Moses became afraid and thought, "The affair must certainly be known."
15 Pharaon entendit parler de cette affaire et chercha à tuer Moïse. Moïse s'enfuit loin de Pharaon; il serendit au pays de Madiân et s'assit auprès d'un puits.	15 Pharaoh, too, heard of the affair and sought to put him to death. But Moses fled from him and stayed in the land of Midian. As he was seated there by a well,
16 Or un prêtre de Madiân avait sept filles. Elles vinrent puiser et remplir les auges pour abreuver lepetit bétail de leur père.	16 seven daughters of a priest of Midian came to draw water and fill the troughs to water their father's flock.
17 Des bergers survinrent et les chassèrent. Moïse se leva, vint à leur secours et abreuva le petit bétail.	17 But some shepherds came and drove them away. Then Moses got up and defended them and watered their flock.
18 Elles revinrent auprès de Réuel, leur père, qui leur dit: "Pourquoi revenez-vous si tôt aujourd'hui?"	18 When they returned to their father Reuel, he said to them, "How is it you have returned so soon today?"
19 Elles lui dirent: "Un Egyptien nous a tirées des mains des bergers; il a même puisé pour nous etabreuvé le petit bétail. --	19 They answered, "An Egyptian saved us from the interference of the shepherds. He even drew water for us and watered the flock!"
20 Et où est-il? Demanda-t-il à ses filles. Pourquoi donc avez-vous abandonné cet homme? Invitez-le àmanger."	20 "Where is the man?" he asked his daughters. "Why did you leave him there? Invite him to have something to eat."
21 Moïse consentit à s'établir auprès de cet homme qui lui donna sa fille, Cippora.	21 Moses agreed to live with him, and the man gave him his daughter Zipporah in marriage.
22 Elle mit au monde un fils qu'il nomma Gershom car, dit-il, "je suis un immigré en terre étrangère."	22 She bore him a son, whom he named Gershom; for he said, "I am a stranger in a foreign land."
23 Au cours de cette longue période, le roi d'Egypte mourut. Les Israélites, gémissant de leur servitude,crièrent, et leur appel à l'aide monta vers Dieu, du fond de leur servitude.	23 A long time passed, during which the king of Egypt died. Still the Israelites groaned and cried out because of their slavery. As their cry for release went up to God,
24 Dieu entendit leur gémissement; Dieu se souvint de son alliance avec Abraham, Isaac et Jacob.	24 he heard their groaning and was mindful of his covenant with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
25 Dieu vit les Israélites et Dieu connut...	25 He saw the Israelites and knew. . . .
