1 Judith leur dit: "Ecoutez-moi, frères. Prenez cette tête, suspendez-la au faîte de vos remparts.	1 Then Judith said to them: "Listen to me, my brothers. Take this head and hang it on the parapet of your wall.
2 Puis, quand l'aube aura paru et que le soleil sera levé sur la terre, prenez chacun vos armes et quetout homme valide sorte de la ville. Sur cette troupe établissez un chef, tout comme si vous vouliez descendredans la plaine vers le poste avancé des Assyriens. Mais ne descendez pas.	2 At daybreak, when the sun rises on the earth, let each of you seize his weapons, and let all the able-bodied men rush out of the city under command of a captain, as if about to go down into the plain against the advance guard of the Assyrians, but without going down.
3 Les Assyriens prendront leur équipement, gagneront leur camp et éveilleront les chefs de leurarmée. On se précipitera alors vers la tente d'Holopherne et on ne le trouvera pas. La frayeur s'emparera d'eux etils fuiront devant vous.	3 They will seize their armor and hurry to their camp to awaken the generals of the Assyrian army. When they run to the tent of Holofernes and do not find him, panic will seize them, and they will flee before you.
4 Vous, et tous ceux qui habitent dans le territoire d'Israël, vous n'aurez plus qu'à les poursuivre et àles abattre dans leur retraite.	4 Then you and all the other inhabitants of the whole territory of Israel will pursue them and strike them down in their tracks.
5 "Mais avant d'agir ainsi, appelez-moi Achior l'Ammonite, pour qu'il voie et reconnaisse lecontempteur de la maison d'Israël, celui qui l'avait envoyé parmi nous comme un homme voué d'avance à lamort."	5 But before doing this, summon for me Achior the Ammonite, that he may see and recognize the one who despised the house of Israel and sent him here to meet his death."
6 On fit donc venir Achior de chez Ozias. Sitôt arrivé, à la vue de la tête d'Holopherne que tenait undes hommes de l'assemblée du peuple, il tomba la face contre terre et s'évanouit.	6 So they called Achior from the house of Uzziah. When he came and saw the head of Holofernes in the hand of one of the men in the assembly of the people, he fell forward in a faint.
7 On le releva. Il se jeta alors aux pieds de Judith et, se prosternant devant elle, s'écria: "Bénie sois-tudans toutes les tentes de Juda et parmi tous les peuples; ceux qui entendront prononcer ton nom seront saisisd'effroi!	7 Then, after they lifted him up, he threw himself at the feet of Judith in homage, saying: "Blessed are you in every tent of Judah; and in every foreign nation, all who hear of you will be struck with terror.
8 Et maintenant dis-moi ce que tu as fait durant ces jours." Et Judith lui raconta, au milieu de tout lepeuple, tout ce qu'elle avait fait depuis le jour de sa sortie de Béthulie jusqu'au moment où elle parlait.	8 But now, tell me all that you did during these days." So Judith told him, in the presence of the people, all that she had been doing from the day she left till the time she began speaking to them.
9 Quand elle se fut tue, le peuple poussa de puissantes acclamations et emplit la ville de crisd'allégresse.	9 When she finished her account, the people cheered loudly, and their city resounded with shouts of joy.
10 Achior, voyant tout ce qu'avait fait le Dieu d'Israël, crut fermement en lui, se fit circoncire et futadmis définitivement dans la maison d'Israël.	10 Now Achior, seeing all that the God of Israel had done, believed firmly in him. He had the flesh of his foreskin circumcised, and he has been united with the house of Israel to the present day.
11 Quand l'aube parut, les gens de Béthulie pendirent la tête d'Holopherne au rempart. Chacun prit sesarmes et tous sortirent par bandes sur les pentes de la montagne.	11 At daybreak they hung the head of Holofernes on the wall. Then all the Israelite men took up their arms and went to the slopes of the mountain.
12 Ce que voyant, les Assyriens dépêchèrent des messagers vers leurs chefs qui, à leur tour, serendirent chez les stratèges, les chiliarques et tous leurs officiers.	12 When the Assyrians saw them, they notified their captains; these, in turn, went to the generals and division leaders and all their other commanders.
13 On parvint ainsi jusqu'à la tente d'Holopherne. "Eveille notre maître, dit-on à son intendant. Cesesclaves ont osé descendre vers nous et nous attaquer pour se faire complètement massacrer."	13 They came to the tent of Holofernes and said to the one in charge of all his things, "Waken our master, for the slaves have dared come down to give us battle, to their utter destruction."
14 Bagoas entra donc. Il frappa des mains devant le rideau de la tente, pensant qu'Holopherne dormaitavec Judith.	14 Bagoas went in, and knocked at the entry of the tent, presuming that he was sleeping with Judith.
15 Mais comme personne ne semblait rien entendre, il ouvrit et pénétra dans la chambre à coucher etle trouva jeté sur le seuil, mort, la tête coupée.	15 As no one answered, he parted the curtains, entered the bedroom, and found him lying on the floor, a headless corpse.
16 Il poussa alors un grand cri, pleura, sanglota, hurla et déchira ses vêtements,	16 He broke into a loud clamor of weeping, groaning, and howling, and rent his garments.
17 puis pénétra dans la tente où logeait Judith et ne la trouva pas. Alors, s'élançant dans la foule, ilcria:	17 Then he entered the tent where Judith had her quarters; and, not finding her, he rushed out to the troops and cried:
18 "Ah! les esclaves se sont rebellés! Une femme des Hébreux a couvert de honte la maison deNabuchodonosor. Holopherne gît à terre, décapité!"	18 "The slaves have duped us! A single Hebrew woman has brought disgrace on the house of King Nebuchadnezzar. Here is Holofernes headless on the ground!"
19 A ces mots les chefs de l'armée d'Assur, l'esprit complètement bouleversé, déchirèrent leurstuniques et firent retentir le camp de leurs cris et de leurs clameurs.	19 When the commanders of the Assyrian army heard these words, they rent their tunics and were seized with consternation. Loud screaming and howling arose in the camp.
