1 Et elle cessa de pleurer.	1 Then she stopped weeping.
2 L'enfant partit avec l'ange, et le chien suivit derrière. Ils marchèrent tous les deux, et quand vint lepremier soir, ils campèrent le long du Tigre.	2 When the boy left home, accompanied by the angel, the dog followed Tobiah out of the house and went with them. The travelers walked till nightfall, and made camp beside the Tigris River.
3 L'enfant descendit au fleuve se laver les pieds, quand un gros poisson sauta de l'eau, et faillit luiavaler le pied. Le garçon cria,	3 Now when the boy went down to wash his feet in the river, a large fish suddenly leaped out of the water and tried to swallow his foot. He shouted in alarm.
4 et l'ange lui dit: "Attrape le poisson, et ne lâche pas!" Le garçon vint à bout du poisson, et le tira sur larive.	4 But the angel said to him, "Take hold of the fish and don't let it get away!" The boy seized the fish and hauled it up on the shore.
5 L'ange lui dit: "Ouvre-le, enlève le fiel, le coeur et le foie; mets-les à part, et jette les entrailles, parceque le fiel, le coeur et le foie font des remèdes utiles."	5 The angel then told him: "Cut the fish open and take out its gall, heart, and liver, and keep them with you; but throw away the entrails. Its gall, heart, and liver make useful medicines."
6 Le jeune homme ouvrit le poisson, préleva le fiel, le coeur et le foie. Il fit frire un peu de poisson pourson repas, et il en garda pour le saler. Ils marchèrent ensuite tous deux ensemble jusqu'auprès de la Médie.	6 After the lad had cut the fish open, he put aside the gall, heart, and liver. Then he broiled and ate part of the fish; the rest he salted and kept for the journey.
7 Alors le garçon posa à l'ange cette question: "Frère Azarias, quel remède y a-t-il donc dans le coeur, lefoie et le fiel de poisson?"	7 Afterward they traveled on together till they were near Media. The boy asked the angel this question: "Brother Azariah, what medicinal value is there in the fish's heart, liver, and gall?"
8 Il répondit: "On brûle le coeur et le foie de poisson, et leur fumée s'emploie dans le cas d'un homme,ou d'une femme, que tourmente un démon ou un esprit malin: toute espèce de malaise disparaît définitivementsans laisser aucune trace.	8 He answered: "As regards the fish's heart and liver, if you burn them so that the smoke surrounds a man or a woman who is afflicted by a demon or evil spirit, the affliction will leave him completely, and no demons will ever return to him again.
9 Quant au fiel, il sert d'onguent pour les yeux, quand on a des taches blanches sur l'oeil: il n'y a plusqu'à souffler sur les taches pour les guérir."	9 And as for the gall, if you rub it on the eyes of a man who has cataracts, blowing into his eyes right on the cataracts, his sight will be restored."
10 Ils pénétrèrent en Médie, ils étaient déjà rendus près d'Ecbatane,	10 When they had entered Media and were getting close to Ecbatana,
11 quand Raphaël dit au jeune homme: "Frère Tobie!" Il répondit: "Eh bien?" L'ange reprit: "Ce soirnous devons loger chez Ragouël, c'est un parent à toi. 12 mais, à part Sarra, il n'a ni garçon ni fille. Or c'est toi son plus proche parent, elle te revient parpriorité, et tu peux prétendre à l'héritage de son père. C'est une enfant sérieuse, courageuse, très gentille, et sonpère l'aime bien.	12 but no other child. Since you are Sarah's closest relative, you before all other men have the right to marry her. Also, her father's estate is rightfully yours to inherit. Now the girl is sensible, courageous, and very beautiful; and her father loves her dearly."
13 Tu as le droit de la prendre. Ecoute-moi, frère, je parlerai de la jeune fille à son père, dès ce soir,pour te la retenir comme fiancée; et quand nous reviendrons de Rhagès, nous ferons le mariage. Je certifie queRagouël n'a absolument pas le droit de te la refuser, ou de la fiancer à un autre. Ce serait encourir la mort,d'après les termes du livre de Moïse, du moment qu'il saurait que la parenté te donne avant tout autre le droit deprendre sa fille. Alors, écoute-moi, frère. Dès ce soir, nous parlons de la jeune fille, et nous faisons la demandeen mariage. A notre retour de Rhagès, nous la prendrons, pour l'emmener avec nous chez toi."	13 He continued: "Since you have the right to marry her, listen to me, brother. Tonight I will ask the girl's father to let us have her as your bride. When we return from Rages, we will hold the wedding feast for her. I know that Raguel cannot keep her from you or let her become engaged to another man; that would be a capital crime according to the decree in the Book of Moses, and he knows that it is your right, before all other men, to marry his daughter. So heed my words, brother; tonight we must speak for the girl, so that we may have her engaged to you. And when we return from Rages, we will take her and bring her back with us to your house."
14 Tobie répondit à Raphaël: "Frère Azarias, je me suis laissé dire qu'elle a déjà été donnée sept fois enmariage, et que, chaque fois, son mari est mort dans la chambre des noces. Il mourait le soir où il entrait dans sachambre, et j'ai entendu des gens dire que c'était un démon qui les tuait,	14 Tobiah objected, however: "Brother Azariah, I have heard that this woman has already been married seven times, and that her husbands died in their bridal chambers. On the very night they approached her, they dropped dead. And I have heard it said that it was a demon who killed them.
15 si bien que j'ai un peu peur. Elle, il ne lui fait rien, parce qu'il l'aime; mais dès que quelqu'un veuts'en approcher, il le tue. Je suis le seul fils de mon père, et je ne tiens pas à mourir, je ne veux pas que mon pèreet ma mère s'affligent toute leur vie sur moi jusqu'au tombeau: ils n'ont pas d'autre fils pour les enterrer."	15 So now I too am afraid of this demon. Because he loves her, he does not harm her; but he does slay any man who wishes to come close to her. I am my father's only child. If I should die, I would bring my father and mother down to their grave in sorrow over me. And they have no other son to bury them!"
16 Il lui dit: "Oublieras-tu les avis de ton père? Il t'a pourtant recommandé de prendre une femme de lamaison de ton père. Alors, écoute-moi, frère. Ne tiens pas compte de ce démon, et prends-la. Je te garantis que,dès ce soir, elle te sera donnée pour femme.	16 Raphael said to him: "Do you not remember your father's orders? He commanded you to marry a woman from your own family. So now listen to me, brother; do not give another thought to this demon, but marry Sarah. I know that tonight you shall have her for your wife!
17 Seulement quand tu seras entré dans la chambre, prends le foie et le coeur du poisson, mets-en unpeu sur les braises de l'encens. L'odeur se répandra,	17 When you go into the bridal chamber, take the fish's liver and heart, and place them on the embers for the incense.
18 le démon la respirera, il s'enfuira, et il n'y a pas de danger qu'on le reprenne autour de la jeune fille.Puis, au moment de vous unir, levez-vous d'abord tous les deux pour prier. Demandez au Seigneur du Ciel devous accorder sa grâce et sa protection. N'aie pas peur, elle t'a été destinée dès l'origine, c'est à toi de la sauver.Elle te suivra, et je gage qu'elle te donnera des enfants qui te seront comme des frères. N'hésite pas." Et quandTobie entendit parler Raphaël, qu'il sut que Sarra était sa soeur, parente de la famille de son père, il l'aima, aupoint de ne plus pouvoir en détacher son coeur.	18 As soon as the demon smells the odor they give off, he will flee and never again show himself near her. Then when you are about to have intercourse with her, both of you first rise up to pray. Beg the Lord of heaven to show you mercy and grant you deliverance. But do not be afraid, for she was set apart for you before the world existed. You will save her, and she will go with you. And I suppose that you will have children by her, who will take the place of brothers for you. So do not worry." When Tobiah heard Raphael say that she was his kinswoman, of his own family's lineage, he fell deeply in love with her, and his heart became set on her.
