Deuxième livre de Samuel 24

JERUSALEM	NEW AMERICAN BIBLE
1 La colère de Yahvé s'enflamma encore contre les Israélites et il excita David contre eux: "Va, dit-il, fais le dénombrement d'Israël et de Juda."	1 The LORD'S anger against Israel flared again, and he incited David against the Israelites by prompting him to number Israel and Judah.
2 Le roi dit à Joab et aux chefs de l'armée qui étaient avec lui: "Parcourez donc toutes les tribusd'Israël, de Dan à Bersabée, et faites le recensement du peuple afin que je sache le chiffre de la population."	2 Accordingly the king said to Joab and the leaders of the army who were with him, "Tour all the tribes in Israel from Dan to Beer-sheba and register the people, that I may know their number."
3 Joab répondit au roi: "Que Yahvé ton Dieu accroisse le peuple de cent fois autant, pendant queMonseigneur le roi peut le voir de ses yeux, mais pourquoi Monseigneur le roi aurait-il ce désir?"	3 But Joab said to the king: "May the LORD your God increase the number of people a hundredfold for your royal majesty to see it with his own eyes. But why does it please my lord the king to order a thing of this kind?"
4 Cependant l'ordre du roi s'imposa à Joab et aux chefs de l'armée, et Joab et les chefs de l'arméequittèrent la présence du roi pour recenser le peuple d'Israël.	4 The king, however, overruled Joab and the leaders of the army, so they left the king's presence in order to register the people of Israel.
5 Ils passèrent le Jourdain et commencèrent par Aroër et la ville qui est au milieu de la vallée,allèrent chez les Gadites et vers Yazèr.	5 Crossing the Jordan, they began near Aroer, south of the city in the wadi, and went in the direction of Gad toward Jazer.
6 Puis ils allèrent en Galaad et au pays des Hivvites, à Qadesh, ils se rendirent à Dan et de Dan ilsobliquèrent vers Sidon.	6 They continued on to Gilead and to the district below Mount Hermon. Then they proceeded to Dan; from there they turned toward Sidon,
7 Puis ils atteignirent la forteresse de Tyr et toutes les villes des Hittites et des Cananéens etaboutirent au Négeb de Juda, à Bersabée.	7 going to the fortress of Tyre and to all the cities of the Hivites and Canaanites, and ending up at Beer-sheba in the Negeb of Judah.
8 Ayant parcouru tout le pays, ils rentrèrent à Jérusalem au bout de neuf mois et vingt jours.	8 Thus they toured the whole country, reaching Jerusalem again after nine months and twenty days.
9 Joab donna au roi le chiffre obtenu pour le recensement du peuple: Israël comptait 800.000hommes d'armes tirant l'épée, et Juda 500.000 hommes.	9 Joab then reported to the king the number of people registered: in Israel, eight hundred thousand men fit for military service; in Judah, five hundred thousand.
10 Après cela le coeur de David lui battit d'avoir recensé le peuple et David dit à Yahvé: "C'est ungrand péché que j'ai commis! Maintenant, Yahvé, veuille pardonner cette faute à ton serviteur, car j'ai commisune grande folie."	10 Afterward, however, David regretted having numbered the people, and said to the LORD: "I have sinned grievously in what I have done. But now, LORD, forgive the guilt of your servant, for I have been very foolish."
11 Quand David se leva le lendemain matin -- cette parole de Yahvé avait été adressée au prophèteGad, le voyant de David:	11 When David rose in the morning, the LORD had spoken to the prophet Gad, David's seer, saying:
12 "Va dire à David: Ainsi parle Yahvé. Je te propose trois choses, choisis-en une et je l'exécuteraipour toi" --	12 "Go and say to David, 'This is what the LORD says: I offer you three alternatives; choose one of them, and I will inflict it on you.'"
13 Donc Gad se rendit chez David et lui notifia ceci: "Faut-il que t'adviennent trois années defamine dans ton pays, ou que tu fuies pendant trois mois devant ton ennemi qui te poursuivra, ou qu'il y aitpendant trois jours la peste dans ton pays? Maintenant réfléchis et vois ce que je dois répondre à celui quim'envoie!"	13 Gad then went to David to inform him. He asked: "Do you want a three years' famine to come upon your land, or to flee from your enemy three months while he pursues you, or to have a three days' pestilence in your land? Now consider and decide what I must reply to him who sent me."
14 David dit à Gad: "Je suis dans une grande anxiété... Ah! tombons entre les mains de Yahvé carsa miséricorde est grande, mais que je ne tombe pas entre les mains des hommes!"	14 David answered Gad: "I am in very serious difficulty. Let us fall by the hand of God, for he is most merciful; but let me not fall by the hand of man."
15 David choisit donc la peste. C'était le temps de la moisson des blés. Yahvé envoya la peste enIsraël depuis le matin jusqu'au temps fixé, le fléau frappa le peuple et 70.000 hommes du peuple moururentdepuis Dan jusqu'à Bersabée.	15 Thus David chose the pestilence. Now it was the time of the wheat harvest when the plague broke out among the people. (The LORD then sent a pestilence over Israel from morning until the time appointed, and seventy thousand of the people from Dan to Beer-sheba died.)
16 L'ange étendit sa main vers Jérusalem pour l'exterminer, mais Yahvé se repentit de ce mal et ildit à l'ange qui exterminait le peuple: "Assez! retire à présent ta main." L'ange de Yahvé se trouvait près de l'aired'Arauna le Jébuséen.	16 But when the angel stretched forth his hand toward Jerusalem to destroy it, the LORD regretted the calamity and said to the angel causing the destruction among the people, "Enough now! Stay your hand." The angel of the LORD was then standing at the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite.
17 Quand David vit l'ange qui frappait le peuple, il dit à Yahvé: "C'est moi qui ai péché, c'est moiqui ai commis le mal, mais ceux-là, c'est le troupeau, qu'ont-ils fait? Que ta main s'appesantisse donc sur moi etsur ma famille!"	17 When David saw the angel who was striking the people, he said to the LORD: "It is I who have sinned; it is I, the shepherd, who have done wrong. But these are sheep; what have they done? Punish me and my kindred."
18 Ce jour-là, Gad se rendit auprès de David et lui dit: "Monte et élève un autel à Yahvé sur l'aired'Arauna le Jébuséen."	18 On the same day Gad went to David and said to him, "Go up and build an altar to the LORD on the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite."
19 David monta donc, suivant la parole de Gad, comme Yahvé l'avait ordonné.	19 Following Gad's bidding, David went up as the LORD had commanded.
20 Arauna regarda et vit le roi et ses officiers qui s'avançaient vers lui. -- Arauna était en train debattre le froment. -- Il sortit et se prosterna devant le roi, la face contre terre.	20 Now Araunah looked down and noticed the king and his servants coming toward him while he was threshing wheat. So he went out and paid homage to the king, with face to the ground.
21 Arauna dit: "Pourquoi Monseigneur le roi est-il venu chez son serviteur?" Et David répondit:"Pour acquérir de toi cette aire, afin de construire un autel à Yahvé. Ainsi le fléau s'écartera du peuple."	21 Then Araunah asked, "Why does my lord the king come to his servant?" David replied, "To buy the threshing floor from you, to build an altar to the LORD, that the plague may be checked among the people."
22 Arauna dit alors au roi: "Que Monseigneur le roi la prenne et qu'il offre ce qui lui semble bon!Voici les boeufs pour l'holocauste, le traîneau et le joug des boeufs pour le bois.	22 But Araunah said to David: "Let my lord the king take and offer up whatever he may wish. Here are oxen for holocausts, and threshing sledges and the yokes of the oxen for wood.
23 Le serviteur de Monseigneur le roi donne tout au roi!" Et Arauna dit au roi: "Que Yahvé tonDieu agrée ton offrande!"	23 All this does Araunah give to the king." Araunah then said to the king, "May the LORD your God accept your offering."
24 Mais le roi dit à Arauna: "Non pas! Je veux te l'acheter en payant, je ne veux pas offrir à Yahvémon Dieu des holocaustes qui ne me coûtent rien." Et David acheta l'aire et les boeufs pour de l'argent, 50 sicles.	24 The king, however, replied to Araunah, "No, I must pay you for it, for I cannot offer to the LORD my God holocausts that cost nothing." So David bought the threshing floor and the oxen for fifty silver shekels.
25 David construisit là un autel à Yahvé et il offrit des holocaustes et des sacrifices de communion.Alors Yahvé eut pitié du pays et le fléau s'écarta d'Israël.	25 Then David built an altar there to the LORD, and offered holocausts and peace offerings. The LORD granted relief to the country, and the plague was checked in Israel.
