Deuxième livre de Samuel 14

JERUSALEM	DOUAI-RHEIMS
1 Joab, fils de Ceruya, reconnut que le coeur du roi se tournait vers Absalom.	1 And Joab the son of Sarvia, understanding that the king's heart was turned to Absalom,
2 Alors Joab envoya chercher à Teqoa une femme avisée et lui dit: "Je t'en prie, feins d'être endeuil, mets des habits de deuil, ne te parfume pas, sois comme une femme qui, depuis bien des jours, porte ledeuil d'un mort.	2 Sent to Thecua, and fetched from thence a wise woman: and said to her: Feign thyself to be a mourner, and put on mourning apparel, and be not anointed with oil, that thou mayest be as a woman that had a long time been mourning for one dead.
3 Tu iras chez le roi et tu lui tiendras ce discours." Joab lui mit dans la bouche les paroles qu'ilfallait.	3 And thou shalt go in to the king, and shalt speak to him in this manner. And Joab put the words in her mouth.
4 La femme de Teqoa alla donc chez le roi, elle tomba la face contre terre et se prosterna, puis elledit: "Au secours, ô roi!"	4 And when the woman of Thecua was come in to the king, she fell before him upon the ground, and worshipped, and said: Save me, O king.
5 Le roi lui demanda: "Qu'as-tu?" Elle répondit: "Hélas! je suis veuve. Mon mari est mort	5 And the king said to her: What is the matter with thee? She answered: Alas, I am a widow woman: for my husband is dead.
6 et ta servante avait deux fils. Il se sont querellés ensemble dans la campagne, il n'y avaitpersonne pour les séparer, l'un a frappé l'autre et l'a tué.	6 And thy handmaid had two sons: and they quarrelled with each other in the field, and there was none to part them: and the one struck the other, and slew him.
7 Voilà que tout le clan s'est dressé contre ta servante et dit: Livre le fratricide: nous le mettrons àmort pour prix de la vie de son frère qu'il a tué, et nous détruirons en même temps l'héritier. Ils vont ainsiéteindre la braise qui me reste, pour ne plus laisser à mon mari ni nom ni survivant sur la face de la terre."	7 And behold the whole kindred rising against thy handmaid, saith: Deliver him that hath slain his brother, that we may kill him for the life of his brother, whom he slew, and that we may destroy the heir: and they seek to quench my spark which is left, and will leave my husband no name, nor remainder upon the earth.
8 Le roi dit à la femme: "Va à ta maison, je donnerai moi-même des ordres à ton sujet."	8 And the king said to the woman: Go to thy house, and I will give charge concerning thee.
9 La femme de Teqoa dit au roi: "Monseigneur le roi! Que la faute retombe sur moi et sur mafamille; le roi et son trône en sont innocents."	9 And the woman of Thecua said to the king: Upon me, my lord, be the iniquity, and upon the house of my father: but may the king and his throne be guiltless.
10 Le roi reprit: "Celui qui t'a menacée, amène-le moi et il ne reviendra plus te faire du mal."	10 And the king said: If any one shall say ought against thee, bring him to me, and be shall not touch thee any more.
11 Elle dit: "Que le roi daigne prononcer le nom de Yahvé ton Dieu, afin que le vengeur du sangn'augmente pas la ruine et ne fasse pas périr mon fils!" Il dit alors: "Aussi vrai que Yahvé est vivant, il netombera pas à terre un seul cheveu de ton fils!"	11 And she said: Let the king remember the Lord his God, that the next of kin be not multiplied to take revenge, and that they may not kill my son. And he said: As the Lord liveth, there shall not one hair of thy son fall to the earth.
12 La femme reprit: "Qu'il soit permis à ta servante de dire un mot à Monseigneur le roi", et ilrépondit: "Parle."	12 Then the woman said: Let thy handmaid speak one word to my lord the king. And he said: Speak.
13 La femme dit: "Et alors, pourquoi le roi -- en prononçant cette sentence, il se reconnaît coupable-- a-t-il eu contre le peuple de Dieu cette pensée de ne pas faire revenir celui qu'il a banni?	13 And the woman said: Why hast thou thought such a thing against the people of God, and why hath the king spoken this word, to sin, and not bring home again his own exile?
14 Nous sommes mortels et comme les eaux qui s'écoulent à terre et qu'on ne peut recueillir, etDieu ne relève pas un cadavre: que le roi fasse donc des plans pour que le banni ne reste pas exilé loin de lui.	14 We all die, and like waters that return no more, we fall down into the earth: neither will God have a soul to perish, but recalleth, meaning that he that is cast off should not altogether perish.
15 "Maintenant, si je suis venue parler de cette affaire à Monseigneur le roi, c'est que les gensm'ont fait peur et ta servante s'est dit: Je parlerai au roi et peut-être le roi exécutera-t-il la parole de sa servante.	15 Now therefore I am come, to speak this word to my lord the king before the people. And thy handmaid said: I will speak to the king, it maybe the king will perform the request of his handmaid.
16 Car le roi consentira à délivrer sa servante des mains de l'homme qui cherche à nous retrancher,moi et mon fils ensemble, de l'héritage de Dieu.	16 And the king hath hearkened to me to deliver his handmaid out of the hand of all that would destroy me and my son together out of the inheritance of God.
17 Ta servante a dit: Puisse la parole de Monseigneur le roi donner l'apaisement. Car Monseigneurle roi est comme l'Ange de Dieu pour saisir le bien et le mal. Que Yahvé ton Dieu soit avec toi!"	17 Then let thy handmaid say, that the word of the Lord the king be made as a sacrifice. For even as an angel of God, so is my lord the king, that he is neither moved with blessing nor cursing: wherefore the Lord thy God is also with thee.
18 Alors le roi, prenant la parole, dit à la femme: "Je t'en prie, ne te dérobe pas à la question que jevais te poser." La femme répondit: "Que Monseigneur le roi parle!"	18 And the king answering, said to the woman: Hide not from me the thing that I ask thee. And the woman said to him: Speak, my lord the king.
19 Le roi demanda: "La main de Joab n'est-elle pas avec toi en tout cela?" La femme répliqua:"Aussi vrai que tu es vivant, Monseigneur le roi, on ne peut pas aller à droite ni à gauche de tout ce qu'a ditMonseigneur le roi: oui, c'est ton serviteur Joab qui m'a donné l'ordre, c'est lui qui a mis toutes ces paroles dansla bouche de ta servante.	19 And the king said: Is not the hand of Joab with thee in all this? The woman answered, and said: By the health of thy soul, my lord, O king, it is neither on the left hand, nor on the right, in all these things which my lord the king hath spoken: for thy servant Joab, he commanded me, and he put all these words into the mouth of thy handmaid.
20 C'est pour déguiser l'affaire que ton serviteur Joab a agi ainsi, mais Monseigneur a la sagesse del'Ange de Dieu, il sait tout ce qui se passe sur la terre."	20 That I should come about with this form of speech, thy servant Joab, commanded this: but thou, my lord, O king, art wise, according to the wisdom of ail angel of God, to understand all things upon earth.
21 Le roi dit alors à Joab: "Eh bien, je fais la chose: Va, ramène le jeune homme Absalom."	21 And the king said to Joab: Behold I am appeased and have granted thy request: Go therefore and fetch back the boy Absalom.
22 Joab tomba la face contre terre, il se prosterna et bénit le roi. Puis Joab dit: "Ton serviteur saitaujourd'hui qu'il a trouvé grâce à tes yeux, Monseigneur le roi, puisque le roi a exécuté la parole de sonserviteur."	22 And Joab falling down to the ground upon his face, adored, and blessed the king: and Joab said: This day thy servant hath understood, that I have found grace in thy sight, my lord, O king: for thou hast fulfilled the request of thy servant.
23 Joab se mit en route, il alla à Geshur et ramena Absalom à Jérusalem.	23 Then Joab arose and went to Gessur, and brought Absalom to Jerusalem.
24 Cependant le roi dit: "Qu'il se retire dans sa maison, il ne sera pas reçu par moi." Absalom seretira dans sa maison et ne fut pas reçu par le roi.	24 But the king said: Let him return into his house, and let him not see my face. So Absalom returned into his house, and saw not the king's face.
25 Dans tout Israël, il n'y avait personne d'aussi beau qu'Absalom, à qui on pût faire tant d'éloges:de la plante des pieds au sommet de la tête, il était sans défaut.	25 But in all Israel there was not a man so comely, and so exceedingly beautiful as Absalom: from the sole of the foot to the crown of his head there was no blemish in him.
26 Lorsqu'il se rasait la tête -- il se rasait chaque année parce que c'était trop lourd, alors il se rasait--, il pesait sa chevelure: soit 200 sicles, poids du roi.	26 And when he polled his hair (now he was polled once a year, because his hair was burdensome to him) he weighed the hair of his head at two hundred sicles, according to the common weight.
27 Il naquit à Absalom trois fils et une fille, qui se nommait Tamar; c'était une belle femme.	27 And there were born to Absalom three sons: and one daughter, whose, name was Thamar, and she was very beautiful.
28 Absalom demeura deux ans à Jérusalem, sans être reçu par le roi.	28 And Absalom dwelt two years in Jerusalem, and saw not the king's face.
29 Absalom convoqua Joab pour l'envoyer chez le roi, mais Joab ne consentit pas à venir chez lui,il le convoqua encore une seconde fois, mais il ne consentit pas à venir.	29 He sent therefore to Joab, to send him to the king: but he would not come to him. And when he had sent the second time, and he would not come to him,
30 Absalom dit à ses serviteurs: "Voyez le champ de Joab qui est à côté du mien et où il y a del'orge, allez-y mettre le feu." Les serviteurs d'Absalom mirent le feu au champ.	30 He said to his servants: You know the field of Joab near my field, that hath a crop of barley: go now and set it on fire. So the servants of Absalom set the corn on fire. And Joab's servants coming with their garments rent, said: The servants of Absalom have set part of the field on fire.
31 Joab vint trouver Absalom dans sa maison et lui dit: "Pourquoi tes serviteurs ont-il mis le feu auchamp qui m'appartient?"	31 Then Joab arose, and came to Absalom to his house, and said: Why have thy servants set my corn on fire?
32 Absalom répondit à Joab: "Voilà ce que je t'avais fait dire: Viens ici, je veux t'envoyer auprèsdu roi avec ce message: Pourquoi suis-je revenu de Geshur? Il vaudrait mieux pour moi y être encore. Je veuxmaintenant être reçu par le roi et, si je suis coupable, qu'il me mettre à mort!"	32 And Absalom answered Joab: I sent to thee beseeching thee to come to me, that I might send thee to the king, to say to him: Wherefore am I come from Gessur? it had been better for me to be there: I beseech thee therefore that I may see the face of the king: and if he be mindful of my iniquity, let him kill me.
33 Joab se rendit près du roi et lui rapporta ces paroles. Puis il appela Absalom. Celui-ci alla chezle roi, se prosterna devant lui et se jeta la face contre terre devant le roi. Et le roi embrassa Absalom.	33 So Joab going in to the king, told him all: and Absalom was called for, and he went in to the king: and prostrated himself on the ground before him: and the king kissed Absalom.
