Livre de la Genèse 12

JERUSALEM	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Yahvé dit à Abram: "Quitte ton pays, ta parenté et la maison de ton père, pour le pays que jet'indiquerai.	1 Yahweh said to Abram, 'Leave your country, your kindred and your father's house for a country whichI shal show you;
2 Je ferai de toi un grand peuple, je te bénirai, je magnifierai ton nom; sois une bénédiction!	2 and I shal make you a great nation, I shal bless you and make your name famous; you are to be ablessing!
3 Je bénirai ceux qui te béniront, je réprouverai ceux qui te maudiront. Par toi se béniront tous lesclans de la terre."	3 I shal bless those who bless you, and shal curse those who curse you, and al clans on earth willbless themselves by you.'
4 Abram partit, comme lui avait dit Yahvé, et Lot partit avec lui. Abram avait 75 ans lorsqu'il quittaHarân.	4 So Abram went as Yahweh told him, and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old whenhe left Haran.
5 Abram prit sa femme Saraï, son neveu Lot, tout l'avoir qu'ils avaient amassé et le personnel qu'ilsavaient acquis à Harân; ils se mirent en route pour le pays de Canaan et ils y arrivèrent.	5 Abram took his wife Sarai, his nephew Lot, all the possessions they had amassed and the people theyhad acquired in Haran. They set off for the land of Canaan, and arrived there.
6 Abram traversa le pays jusqu'au lieu saint de Sichem, au Chêne de Moré. Les Cananéens étaientalors dans le pays.	6 Abram passed through the country as far as the holy place at Shechem, the Oak of Moreh. TheCanaanites were in the country at the time.
7 Yahvé apparut à Abram et dit: "C'est à ta postérité que je donnerai ce pays." Et là, Abram bâtit unautel à Yahvé qui lui était apparu.	7 Yahweh appeared to Abram and said, 'I shal give this country to your progeny.' And there, Abrambuilt an altar to Yahweh who had appeared to him.
8 Il passa de là dans la montagne, à l'orient de Béthel, et il dressa sa tente, ayant Béthel à l'ouest et Aïà l'est. Là, il bâtit un autel à Yahvé et il invoqua son nom.	8 From there he moved on to the mountainous district east of Bethel, where he pitched his tent, withBethel to the west and Ai to the east. There he built an altar to Yahweh and invoked the name of Yahweh.
9 Puis, de campement en campement, Abram alla au Négeb.	9 Then Abram made his way stage by stage to the Negeb.
10 Il y eut une famine dans le pays et Abram descendit en Egypte pour y séjourner, car la faminepesait lourdement sur le pays.	10 There was a famine in the country, and Abram went down to Egypt to stay there for a time, since thefamine in the country was severe.
11 Lorsqu'il fut près d'entrer en Egypte, il dit à sa femme Saraï: "Vois-tu, je sais que tu es une femmede belle apparence.	11 When he was about to enter Egypt, he said to his wife Sarai, 'Look, I know you are a beautifulwoman.
12 Quand les Egyptiens te verront, ils diront: "C'est sa femme", et ils me tueront et te laisseront envie.	12 When the Egyptians see you they wil say, "That is his wife," and they wil kil me but leave you alive.
13 Dis, je te prie, que tu es ma sœur, pour qu'on me traite bien à cause de toi et qu'on me laisse en viepar égard pour toi."	13 Therefore please tell them you are my sister, so that they may treat me wel because of you andspare my life out of regard for you.'
14 De fait, quand Abram arriva en Egypte, les Egyptiens virent que la femme était très belle.	14 When Abram arrived in Egypt the Egyptians did indeed see that the woman was very beautiful.
15 Les officiers de Pharaon la virent et la vantèrent à Pharaon; et la femme fut emmenée au palais dePharaon.	15 When Pharaoh's officials saw her they sang her praises to Pharaoh and the woman was taken intoPharaoh's household.
16 Celui-ci traita bien Abram à cause d'elle: il eut du petit et du gros bétail, des ânes, des esclaves,des servantes, des ânesses, des chameaux.	16 And Abram was very well treated because of her and received flocks, oxen, donkeys, men andwomen slaves, she-donkeys and camels.
17 Mais Yahvé frappa Pharaon de grandes plaies, et aussi sa maison, à propos de Saraï, la femmed'Abram.	17 But Yahweh inflicted severe plagues on Pharaoh and his household because of Abram's wife Sarai.
18 Pharaon appela Abram et dit: "Qu'est-ce que tu m'as fait? Pourquoi ne m'as-tu pas déclaré qu'elleétait ta femme?	18 So Pharaoh summoned Abram and said, 'What is this you have done to me? Why did you not tell meshe was your wife?
19 Pourquoi as-tu dit: Elle est ma sœur! en sorte que je l'ai prise pour femme. Maintenant, voilà tafemme: prends-la et va-t'en!"	19 Why did you say, "She is my sister," so that I took her to be my wife? Now, here is your wife. Takeher and go!'
20 Pharaon le confia à des hommes qui le reconduisirent à la frontière, lui, sa femme et tout ce qu'ilpossédait.	20 And Pharaoh gave his people orders about him; they sent him on his way with his wife and al hispossessions.
