DIODATI	NEW JERUSALEM
1 O SIGNORE, perchè te ne stai lontano? Perchè ti nascondi a’ tempi che siamo in distretta?	1 Why, Yahweh, do you keep so distant, stay hidden in times of trouble?
2 L’empio colla sua superbia persegue il povero afflitto; Ma saranno presi nelle macchinazioni che hanno fatte.	2 In his pride the wicked hunts down the weak, who is caught in the schemes he devises.
3 Perciocchè l’empio si gloria de’ desiderii dell’anima sua; E benedice l’avaro, e dispetta il Signore.	3 The wicked is proud of his inmost desires, by his blasphemies the grasping spurns Yahweh,
4 L’empio, secondo l’alterezza del suo volto, non si cura di nulla; Tutti i suoi pensieri sono, che non vi è Dio.	4 the wicked in his arrogance does not look very far; 'There is no God,' is his only thought.
5 Le sue vie son profane in ogni tempo; I tuoi giudicii gli sono una cosa troppo alta, per averli davanti a sè; Egli soffia contro a tutti i suoi nemici.	5 In al circumstances his step is assured; your judgements are above his head. His rivals? He scoffs atthem al .
6 Egli dice nel suo cuore: Io non sarò giammai smosso; Egli dice, che in veruna età non caderà in alcun male.	6 He says in his heart, 'I shall never be shaken,' free of trouble himself,
7 La sua bocca è piena di esecrazione, e di frodi, e d’inganno; Sotto la lingua sua vi è perversità ed iniquità.	7 he wishes it on others. His speech is full of lies and browbeating, under his tongue lurk spite andwickedness.
8 Egli sta negli agguati per le ville; Egli uccide l’innocente in luoghi nascosti; I suoi occhi spiano il povero.	8 In the undergrowth he lies in ambush, in his hiding-place he murders the innocent. He watches intentlyfor the downtrodden,
9 Egli insidia il povero nel suo nascondimento, Come il leone nella sua spelonca; Egli l’insidia per predarlo; Egli preda il povero, traendolo nella sua rete.	9 lurking unseen like a lion in his lair, lurking to pounce on the poor; he pounces on him and drags himoff in his net.
10 Egli se ne sta quatto e chino; E molti poveri caggiono nelle sue unghie.	10 He keeps watch, crouching down low, the poor wretch falls into his clutches;
11 Egli dice nel cuor suo: Iddio l’ha dimenticato; Egli ha nascosta la sua faccia, egli giammai non lo vedrà	11 he says in his heart, 'God forgets, he has turned away his face to avoid seeing the end.'
12 Levati, Signore; o Dio, alza la tua mano; Non dimenticare i poveri afflitti.	12 Rise, Yahweh! God, raise your hand, do not forget the afflicted!
13 Perchè l’empio dispetta egli Iddio? Perchè dice egli nel cuor suo, che tu non ne ridomanderai ragione?	13 Why should the wicked spurn God, assuring himself you wil never follow it up?
14 Tu l’hai pur veduto; perciocchè tu riguardi l’oltraggio e il dispetto, Per prendere il fatto in mano. Il povero si rimette in te; Tu sei l’aiutatore dell’orfano.	14 You have seen for yourself the trouble and vexation, you watch so as to take it in hand. Theoppressed relies on you; you are the only recourse of the orphan.
15 Fiacca il braccio dell’empio; E poi, se tu ricerchi l’empietà del malvagio, non la troverai più.	15 Break the arm of the wicked and evil, seek out wickedness til there is none left to be found.
16 Il Signore è re in sempiterno; Le genti son perite dalla sua terra.	16 Yahweh is king for ever and ever, the heathen has vanished from his country.
17 O Signore, tu esaudisci il desiderio degli umili; Tu raffermi il cuor loro, le tue orecchie sono attente a loro;	17 Yahweh, you listen to the laments of the poor, you give them courage, you grant them a hearing,
18 Per far ragione all’orfano e al povero; Acciocchè l’uomo di terra non continui più ad usar violenza	18 to give judgement for the orphaned and exploited, so that earthborn humans may strike terror nomore.
