DIODATI	NEW AMERICAN BIBLE
1 Ora dunque, Giobbe, ascolta, ti prego, i miei ragionamenti, E porgi gli orecchi a tutte le mie parole.	1 Therefore, O Job, hear my discourse, and hearken to all my words.
2 Ecco, ora io ho aperta la mia bocca, La mia lingua parla nel mio palato.	2 Behold, now I open my mouth; my tongue and my voice form words.
3 Le mie parole saranno secondo la dirittura del mio cuore; E le mie labbra proferiranno scienza pura.	3 I will state directly what is in my mind, my lips shall utter knowledge sincerely;
4 Lo Spirito di Dio mi ha fatto, E l’alito dell’Onnipotente mi ha data la vita.	4 For the spirit of God has made me, the breath of the Almighty keeps me alive.
5 Se tu puoi, rispondimi; Mettiti in ordine contro a me, e presentati pure.	5 If you are able, refute me; draw up your arguments and stand forth.
6 Ecco, io sono a Dio, come tu; Anch’io sono stato tratto dal fango.	6 Behold I, like yourself, have been taken from the same clay by God.
7 Ecco, il mio spavento non ti sgomenterà, E la mia mano non ti sarà grave addosso	7 Therefore no fear of me should dismay you, nor should my presence weigh heavily upon you.
8 Tu hai pur detto, udendolo io, Ed io ho intesa la voce delle parole:	8 But you have said in my hearing, as I listened to the sound of your words:
9 Io son puro, senza misfatto; Io son netto, e non vi è iniquità in me;	9 "I am clean and without transgression; I am innocent; there is no guilt in me.
10 Ecco, egli trova delle occasioni contro a me; Egli mi reputa per suo nemico;	10 Yet he invents pretexts against me and reckons me as his enemy.
11 Egli ha messi i miei piedi ne’ ceppi, Egli spia tutti i miei sentieri.	11 He puts my feet in the stocks; he watches all my ways!"
12 Ecco, in questo tu non sei stato giusto; io ti risponderò; Perciocchè Iddio è vie maggiore che l’uomo.	12 In this you are not just, let me tell you; for God is greater than man.
13 Perchè hai tu conteso con lui, Perchè egli non dichiara tutte le sue ragioni?	13 Why, then, do you make complaint against him that he gives no account of his doings?
14 Egli è ben vero, che talora Iddio parla una volta, E due, a chi non vi ha atteso.	14 For God does speak, perhaps once, or even twice, though one perceive it not.
15 In sogno, in vision notturna, Quando il più profondo sonno cade in su gli uomini, Quando essi son tutti sonnacchiosi sopra i lor letti;	15 In a dream, in a vision of the night, (when deep sleep falls upon men) as they slumber in their beds,
16 Allora egli apre loro l’orecchio, E suggella il lor castigo;	16 It is then he opens the ears of men and as a warning to them, terrifies them;
17 Per istorre l’uomo dalle opere sue, E per far che la superbia dell’uomo non apparisca più;	17 By turning man from evil and keeping pride away from him,
18 Per iscampar l’anima sua dalla fossa, E far che la sua vita non passi per la spada	18 He withholds his soul from the pit and his life from passing to the grave.
19 Ma talora altresì l’uomo è castigato con dolori sopra il suo letto, E tutte le sue ossa di grave malattia;	19 Or a man is chastened on his bed by pain and unceasing suffering within his frame,
20 E la sua vita gli fa abbominare il cibo, E l’anima sua la vivanda desiderabile;	20 So that to his appetite food becomes repulsive, and his senses reject the choicest nourishment.
21 La sua carne è consumata, talchè non apparisce più; E le sue ossa, che prima non si vedevano, spuntano fuori;	21 His flesh is wasted so that it cannot be seen, and his bones, once invisible, appear;
22 E l’anima sua si accosta alla fossa, E la vita sua a’ mali mortali.	22 His soul draws near to the pit, his life to the place of the dead.
23 Ma se allora vi è appresso di lui alcun messo, un parlatore, Uno d’infra mille, Per dichiarare all’uomo il suo dovere;	23 If then there be for him an angel, one out of a thousand, a mediator, To show him what is right for him and bring the man back to justice,
24 Iddio gli farà grazia, e dirà: Riscuotilo, che non iscenda alla fossa; Io ho trovato il riscatto.	24 He will take pity on him and say, "Deliver him from going down to the pit; I have found him a ransom."
25 La sua carne diventerà morbida, più che non è in fanciullezza; Egli ritornerà a’ dì della sua giovanezza.	25 Then his flesh shall become soft as a boy's; he shall be again as in the days of his youth.
26 Egli supplicherà a Dio, ed egli gli sarà placato, E gli farà veder la sua faccia con giubilo, E renderà all’uomo la sua giustizia.	26 He shall pray and God will favor him; he shall see God's face with rejoicing.
27 Ed esso poi si volgerà verso gli uomini, e dirà: Io avea peccato, ed avea pervertita la dirittura, E ciò non mi ha punto giovato.	27 He shall sing before men and say, "I sinned and did wrong, yet he has not punished me accordingly.
28 Così Iddio riscoterà l’anima sua, che non passi nella fossa, E la vita sua vedrà la luce	28 He delivered my soul from passing to the pit, and I behold the light of life."
29 Ecco, Iddio opera tutte queste cose Due e tre volte inverso l’uomo;	29 Lo, all these things God does, twice, or thrice, for a man,
30 Per ritrarre l’anima sua dalla fossa, Acciocchè sia illuminata della luce de’ viventi.	30 Bringing back his soul from the pit to the light, in the land of the living.
31 Attendi, o Giobbe, ascoltami; Taci, ed io parlerò.	31 Be attentive, O Job; listen to me! Be silent and I will speak.
32 Se tu hai alcuna cosa da dire, rispondimi; Parla, perciocchè io desidero giustificarti.	32 If you have aught to say, then answer me. Speak out! I should like to see you justified.
33 Se no, ascoltami tu; Taci, ed io t’insegnerò la sapienza	33 If not, then do you listen to me; be silent while I teach you wisdom.
