| 5 A los descendientes de Leví que reciben el sacerdocio, la Ley les manda percibir el diezmo del pueblo, esto es, de sus propios hermanos, que sin embargo pertenecen como ellos a la descendencia de Abraham. | 5 And those descendants of Levi who receive the priestly office have a commandment in the law to take tithes from the people, that is, from their brethren, though these also are descended from Abraham. |

| 12 Porque el cambio de sacerdocio implica necesariamente un cambio de Ley. | 12 For when there is a change in the priesthood, there is necessarily a change in the law as well. |
| 13 De hecho, Jesús, de quien se dicen estas cosas, pertenecía a una tribu que no era la de Leví, ninguno de cuyos miembros se dedicó al servicio del altar. | 13 For the one of whom these things are spoken belonged to another tribe, from which no one has ever served at the altar. |
| 14 Porque es sabido que nuestro Señor desciende de Judá, y de esa tribu, nunca habló Moisés al referirse a los sacerdotes. | 14 For it is evident that our Lord was descended from Judah, and in connection with that tribe Moses said nothing about priests. |
| 15 Y esto se hace más evidente aún, si se tiene en cuenta que este nuevo sacerdote, a semejanza de Melquisedec, | 15 This becomes even more evident when another priest arises in the likeness of Melchizedek, |
| 16 se constituye, no según la disposición de una ley meramente humana, sino según el poder de una vida indestructible. | 16 who has become a priest, not according to a legal requirement concerning bodily descent but by the power of an indestructible life. |
| 17 De él se ha atestiguado: "Tú eres sacerdote para siempre, según el orden de Melquisedec". | 17 For it is witnessed of him, "Thou art a priest for ever, after the order of Melchizedek." |
| 18 De esta manera queda derogada la disposición anterior, en razón de su ineficacia e inutilidad | 18 On the one hand, a former commandment is set aside because of its weakness and uselessness |
| 19 –ya que la Ley es incapaz de conducir a la perfección– y se introduce una esperanza mejor, que nos permite acercarnos a Dios. | 19 (for the law made nothing perfect); on the other hand, a better hope is introduced, through which we draw near to God. |

| 21 Jesús lo fue con un juramento, el de aquel que le dijo: "Juró el Señor y no se arrepentirá: Tú eres sacerdote para siempre". | 21 Those who formerly became priests took their office without an oath, but this one was addressed with an oath, "The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind, 'Thou art a priest for ever.'" |
| 22 Por lo tanto, Jesús ha llegado a ser el garante de una Alianza superior. | 22 This makes Jesus the surety of a better covenant. |
| 23 Los otros sacerdotes tuvieron que ser muchos, porque la muerte les impedía permanecer; | 23 The former priests were many in number, because they were prevented by death from continuing in office; |
| 24 pero Jesús, como permanece para siempre, posee un sacerdocio inmutable. | 24 but he holds his priesthood permanently, because he continues for ever. |
| 25 De ahí que él puede salvar en forma definitiva a los que se acercan a Dios por su intermedio, ya que vive eternamente para interceder por ellos. | 25 Consequently he is able for all time to save those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them. |
| 26 El es el Sumo Sacerdote que necesitábamos: santo, inocente, sin mancha, separado de los pecadores y elevado por encima del cielo. | 26 For it was fitting that we should have such a high priest, holy, blameless, unstained, separated from sinners, exalted above the heavens. |

| 28 La Ley, en efecto, establece como sumos sacerdotes a hombres débiles; en cambio, la palabra del juramento –que es posterior a la Ley– establece a un Hijo que llegó a ser perfecto para siempre. | 28 Indeed, the law appoints men in their weakness as high priests, but the word of the oath, which came later than the law, appoints a Son who has been made perfect for ever. |
