| 2 Et (Aussi) Jonathas avertit David, et lui dit : Saül mon père cherche le moyen de te tuer ; c'est pourquoi tiens-toi sur tes gardes, je te prie, demain matin : retire-toi en un lieu secret, où tu te tiendras caché. | 2 told him: "My father Saul is trying to kill you. Therefore, please be on your guard tomorrow morning; get out of sight and remain in hiding. |
| 3 Pour moi je sortirai avec mon père, et je me tiendrai auprès de lui dans le champ (partout) où tu seras. Je parlerai de toi à mon père, et je viendrai te dire tout ce que j'aurai pu apprendre. | 3 I, however, will go out and stand beside my father in the countryside where you are, and will speak to him about you. If I learn anything, I will let you know." |
| 4 Jonathas parla donc favorablement de David à Saül son père, et lui dit : Seigneur roi, ne faites pas de mal à David votre serviteur, car il ne vous en a pas fait, et il vous a rendu des services très importants. | 4 Jonathan then spoke well of David to his father Saul, saying to him: "Let not your majesty sin against his servant David, for he has committed no offense against you, but has helped you very much by his deeds. |
| 5 Il a exposé sa vie à un extrême péril (mis son âme en sa main, note) ; il a tué le Philistin, et le Seigneur a sauvé tout Israël d'une manière merveilleuse. Vous l'avez vu, et vous en avez eu de la joie. Pourquoi donc voulez-vous maintenant faire une faute en répandant le sang innocent, et en tuant David, qui n'est point coupable ? | 5 When he took his life in his hands and slew the Philistine, and the LORD brought about a great victory for all Israel through him, you were glad to see it. Why, then, should you become guilty of shedding innocent blood by killing David without cause?" |
| 6 Saül, ayant entendu ce discours, fut apaisé par la voix de Jonathas, et jura : Vive le Seigneur, (Le Seigneur vit !) je te promets qu'il ne mourra point. | 6 Saul heeded Jonathan's plea and swore, "As the LORD lives, he shall not be killed." |
| 7 Jonathas appela aussitôt David, lui rapporta tout ce qui s'était passé, et le présenta de nouveau à Saül ; et David demeura auprès de Saül, comme il y avait été auparavant (hier et avant-hier, note). | 7 So Jonathan summoned David and repeated the whole conversation to him. Jonathan then brought David to Saul, and David served him as before. |
| 8 (Mais) La guerre recommença ensuite ; et David marcha contre les Philistins, les combattit, en tailla en pièces un grand nombre, et mit le reste en fuite. | 8 When war broke out again, David went out to fight against the Philistines and inflicted a great defeat upon them, putting them to flight. |
| 9 Et le malin esprit envoyé par le Seigneur se saisit encore de Saül. Il était assis dans sa maison une lance à la main ; et comme David jouait de la harpe, | 9 Then an evil spirit from the LORD came upon Saul as he was sitting in his house with spear in hand and David was playing the harp nearby. |
| 10 Saül tâcha de le percer avec sa lance contre la muraille ; mais David se détourna, et la lance, sans l'avoir blessé, pénétra dans la muraille. Il s'enfuit aussitôt, et se sauva ainsi pour cette nuit-là. | 10 Saul tried to nail David to the wall with the spear, but David eluded Saul, so that the spear struck only the wall, and David got away safe. |
| 11 Saül envoya donc ses gardes dans la maison de David pour s'assurer de lui et le tuer le lendemain matin. Michol, femme de David l'en avertit, et lui dit : Si tu ne te sauves cette nuit, tu es (seras) mort demain matin. | 11 The same night, Saul sent messengers to David's house to guard it, that he might kill him in the morning. David's wife Michal informed him, "Unless you save yourself tonight, tomorrow you will be killed." |
| 12 Elle le descendit (aussitôt) par une (la) fenêtre. David s'échappa, s'enfuit et se sauva. | 12 Then Michal let David down through a window, and he made his escape in safety. |
| 13 (Cependant) Michol prit ensuite une (la) statue qu'elle coucha sur le lit de David. Elle lui mit autour de la tête une peau (velue) de chèvre avec le poil, et couvrit le corps de vêtements. | 13 Michal took the household idol and laid it in the bed, putting a net of goat's hair at its head and covering it with a spread. |
| 14 Or Saül envoya des gardes (archers) pour prendre David, et on leur dit qu'il était malade. | 14 When Saul sent messengers to arrest David, she said, "He is sick." |
| 15 Il envoya encore d'autres gens avec ordre de le voir, et il leur dit : Apportez-le-moi dans son lit, afin qu'il meure. | 15 Saul, however, sent the messengers back to see David and commanded them, "Bring him up to me in the bed, that I may kill him." |
| 16 Ces messagers étant venus, on ne trouva sur le lit qu'une statue, qui avait la tête couverte d'une peau de chèvre. | 16 But when the messengers entered, they found the household idol in the bed, with the net of goat's hair at its head. |
| 17 Alors Saül dit à Michol : Pourquoi m'as-tu trompé ainsi, et pourquoi as-tu laissé échapper mon ennemi ? Michol répondit à Saül : C'est qu'il m'a dit : Laisse-moi aller, ou je te tuerai. | 17 Saul therefore asked Michal: "Why did you play this trick on me? You have helped my enemy to get away!" Michal answered Saul: "He threatened me, 'Let me go or I will kill you.'" |
| 18 C'est ainsi que David se sauva en prenant la fuite ; et étant venu trouver Samuel à Ramatha, il lui rapporta la manière dont Saül l'avait traité, et ils s'en allèrent ensemble à Naïoth, où ils demeurèrent quelque temps. | 18 Thus David got safely away; he went to Samuel in Ramah, informing him of all that Saul had done to him. Then he and Samuel went to stay in the sheds. |
| 19 Et on vint en avertir Saül, en disant : David est à Naïoth de Ramatha. | 19 When Saul was told that David was in the sheds near Ramah, |
| 20 Saül envoya donc des gardes (archers) pour prendre David ; mais les gardes, ayant vu une (la) troupe de prophètes qui prophétisaient, et Samuel qui présidait parmi eux, furent saisis eux-mêmes de l'Esprit du Seigneur, et ils commencèrent à prophétiser eux-mêmes. | 20 he sent messengers to arrest David. But when they saw the band of prophets, presided over by Samuel, in a prophetic frenzy, they too fell into the prophetic state. |
| 21 Saül, en ayant été averti, envoya d'autres messagers, qui prophétisèrent aussi comme les premiers. Il en envoya pour la troisième fois, qui prophétisèrent pour la troisième fois (encore). Et entrant dans une grande colère, | 21 Informed of this, Saul sent other messengers, who also fell into the prophetic state. For the third time Saul sent messengers, but they too fell into the prophetic state. |
| 22 il s'en alla lui-même à Ramatha, s'avança jusqu'à la grande citerne qui est à Socho, et il demanda en quel lieu étaient Samuel et David. On lui répondit : Ils sont à Naïoth de Ramatha. | 22 Saul then went to Ramah himself. Arriving at the cistern of the threshing floor on the bare hilltop, he inquired, "Where are Samuel and David?", and was told, "At the sheds near Ramah." |
| 23 Aussitôt il y alla, et fut saisi lui-même de l'Esprit du Seigneur ; et il prophétisait durant tout le chemin, jusqu'à ce qu'il fût arrivé à Naïoth près de Ramatha. | 23 As he set out from the hilltop toward the sheds, the spirit of God came upon him also, and he continued on in a prophetic condition until he reached the spot. At the sheds near Ramah |
| 24 Il se dépouilla aussi lui-même de ses vêtements, prophétisa avec les autres devant Samuel, et demeura nu à terre tout le jour et toute la nuit ; ce qui donna lieu à ce proverbe : Saül est-il donc aussi devenu prophète ? | 24 he, too, stripped himself of his garments and he, too, remained in the prophetic state in the presence of Samuel; all that day and night he lay naked. That is why they say, "Is Saul also among the prophets?" |
