| 2 (Et) Il (se) choisit trois mille hommes du peuple d'Israël : deux mille étaient avec lui à Machmas et sur la montagne de Béthel, et mille avec Jonathas à Gabaa de Benjamin ; et il renvoya le reste du peuple chacun chez soi. | 2 Saul chose three thousand men of Israel; two thousand were with Saul in Michmash and the hill country of Bethel, and a thousand were with Jonathan in Gibe-ah of Benjamin; the rest of the people he sent home, every man to his tent. |
| 3 Or Jonathas battit la garnison des Philistins qui étaient à Gabaa, et les Philistins l'apprirent aussitôt ; et Saül le fit publier à son de trompe dans tout le pays en disant : Que les Hébreux entendent ! | 3 Jonathan defeated the garrison of the Philistines which was at Geba; and the Philistines heard of it. And Saul blew the trumpet throughout all the land, saying, "Let the Hebrews hear." |
| 4 Ainsi ce bruit se répandit dans tout Israël : Saül a battu la garnison des Philistins. Et Israël se leva contre les Philistins. Et le peuple s'assembla avec de grands cris auprès de Saül à Galgala. | 4 And all Israel heard it said that Saul had defeated the garrison of the Philistines, and also that Israel had become odious to the Philistines. And the people were called out to join Saul at Gilgal. |
| 5 Les Philistins s'assemblèrent aussi pour combattre contre Israël ; ils avaient trente mille chars, six mille chevaux, et une multitude de fantassins aussi nombreuse que le sable qui est sur le rivage de la mer. Et ils vinrent camper à Machmas, à l'orient de Béthaven. | 5 And the Philistines mustered to fight with Israel, thirty thousand chariots, and six thousand horsemen, and troops like the sand on the seashore in multitude; they came up and encamped in Michmash, to the east of Beth-aven. |
| 6 Les Israélites, ayant vu qu'ils étaient comme à l'extrémité (car le peuple était tout abattu), allèrent se cacher dans les cavernes, dans les lieux les plus secrets, dans les rochers, dans les antres et dans les citernes. | 6 When the men of Israel saw that they were in straits (for the people were hard pressed), the people hid themselves in caves and in holes and in rocks and in tombs and in cisterns, |
| 7 (Mais) Les autres Hébreux passèrent le Jourdain, et vinrent au pays de Gad et de Galaad. Saül était encore à Galgala ; mais tout le peuple qui le suivait était dans l'effroi. | 7 or crossed the fords of the Jordan to the land of Gad and Gilead. Saul was still at Gilgal, and all the people followed him trembling. |
| 8 Il attendit sept jours, comme Samuel le lui avait ordonné. Cependant Samuel ne venait point à Galgala ; et peu à peu tout le peuple abandonnait le roi. | 8 He waited seven days, the time appointed by Samuel; but Samuel did not come to Gilgal, and the people were scattering from him. |
| 9 Saül dit donc : Amenez-moi l'holocauste et les victimes pacifiques. Et il offrit l'holocauste. | 9 So Saul said, "Bring the burnt offering here to me, and the peace offerings." And he offered the burnt offering. |
| 10 Lorsqu'il achevait d'offrir l'holocauste, Samuel arriva. Et Saül alla au-devant de lui pour le saluer. | 10 As soon as he had finished offering the burnt offering, behold, Samuel came; and Saul went out to meet him and salute him. |
| 11 Samuel lui dit : Qu'avez-vous fait ? Saül lui répondit : Voyant que le peuple me quittait l'un après l'autre, que vous n'étiez point venu au jour que vous aviez dit, et que les Philistins s'étaient assemblés à Machmas, | 11 Samuel said, "What have you done?" And Saul said, "When I saw that the people were scattering from me, and that you did not come within the days appointed, and that the Philistines had mustered at Michmash, |
| 12 j'ai dit en moi-même : Les Philistins vont venir m'attaquer à Galgala, et je n'ai point encore apaisé le Seigneur. Etant donc contraint par cette nécessité, j'ai offert l'holocauste. | 12 I said, Now the Philistines will come down upon me at Gilgal, and I have not entreated the favor of the LORD'; so I forced myself, and offered the burnt offering." |
| 13 Samuel dit à Saül : Vous avez agi follement, et vous n'avez point observé les ordres que le Seigneur votre Dieu vous avait donnés. Si vous n'aviez pas fait cette faute, le Seigneur aurait maintenant affermi à jamais votre règne sur Israël ; | 13 And Samuel said to Saul, "You have done foolishly; you have not kept the commandment of the LORD your God, which he commanded you; for now the LORD would have established your kingdom over Israel for ever. |
| 14 mais votre règne ne subsistera pas à l'avenir. Le Seigneur s'est cherché un homme selon son cœur, et il lui a commandé d'être chef de son peuple, parce que vous n'avez point observé ce qu'il vous a ordonné. | 14 But now your kingdom shall not continue; the LORD has sought out a man after his own heart; and the LORD has appointed him to be prince over his people, because you have not kept what the LORD commanded you." |
| 15 (Or) Samuel s'en alla ensuite, et passa de Galgala à Gabaa de Benjamin ; et le reste du peuple, marchant avec Saül contre les troupes qui les attaquaient, passa aussi de Galgala à Gabaa, sur la colline de Benjamin. Saül, ayant fait la revue du peuple qui était demeuré avec lui, trouva environ six cents hommes. | 15 And Samuel arose, and went up from Gilgal to Gibe-ah of Benjamin. And Saul numbered the people who were present with him, about six hundred men. |
| 16 Saül et Jonathas son fils étaient donc à Gabaa de Benjamin avec ceux qui les avaient suivis ; et les Philistins étaient campés à Machmas. | 16 And Saul, and Jonathan his son, and the people who were present with them, stayed in Geba of Benjamin; but the Philistines encamped in Michmash. |
| 17 Il sortit alors trois bandes du camp des Philistins pour aller piller. L'une prit le chemin d'Ephra vers le pays de Sual ; | 17 And raiders came out of the camp of the Philistines in three companies; one company turned toward Ophrah, to the land of Shual, |
| 18 l'autre marcha comme pour aller à Béthoron ; et la troisième tourna vers le chemin du coteau qui domine la vallée de Séboïm du côté du désert. | 18 another company turned toward Beth-horon, and another company turned toward the border that looks down upon the valley of Zeboim toward the wilderness. |
| 19 Or il ne se trouvait point de forgeron dans toutes les terres d'Israël. Car les Philistins avaient pris cette précaution, de peur que les Hébreux ne pussent forger des épées ou des lances. | 19 Now there was no smith to be found throughout all the land of Israel; for the Philistines said, "Lest the Hebrews make themselves swords or spears"; |
| 20 Et tous les Israélites étaient obligés d'aller chez les Philistins pour faire aiguiser le soc de leurs charrues, leurs hoyaux, leurs haches et leurs sarcloirs. | 20 but every one of the Israelites went down to the Philistines to sharpen his plowshare, his mattock, his axe, or his sickle; |
| 21 C'est pourquoi le tranchant des socs de charrues, des hoyaux, des fourches et des haches était émoussé, sans qu'on pût redresser la pointe d'un aiguillon. | 21 and the charge was a pim for the plowshares and for the mattocks, and a third of a shekel for sharpening the axes and for setting the goads. |
| 22 Et lorsque le jour du combat fut venu, il ne se trouva, excepté Saül et Jonathas, son fils, personne de tous ceux qui les avaient suivis, qui eût une lance ou une épée à la main. | 22 So on the day of the battle there was neither sword nor spear found in the hand of any of the people with Saul and Jonathan; but Saul and Jonathan his son had them. |
| 23 Or un poste de (la garnison des) Philistins sortit et vint s'établir à Machmas. | 23 And the garrison of the Philistines went out to the pass of Michmash. |
