| 1 Alors un des sept anges qui avaient les sept coupes vint et me parla, en disant : Viens, et je te montrerai la condamnation de la grande prostituée, qui est assise sur de vastes (les grandes) eaux, | 1 And there came one of the seven angels, who had the seven vials, and spoke with me, saying: Come, I will shew thee the condemnation of the great harlot, who sitteth upon many waters, |
| 2 avec laquelle les rois de la terre se sont souillés, et les habitants de la terre ont été enivrés du vin de sa prostitution. | 2 With whom the kings of the earth have committed fornication; and they who inhabit the earth, have been made drunk with the whine of her whoredom. |
| 3 Et il me transporta en esprit dans le désert. Et je vis une femme assise sur une bête de couleur écarlate, couverte de noms de blasphèmes, qui avait sept têtes et dix cornes. | 3 And he took me away in spirit into the desert. And I saw a woman sitting upon a scarlet coloured beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns. |
| 4 Et la femme était vêtue de pourpre et d'écarlate, et parée d'or, de pierres précieuses et de perles ; elle avait dans sa main une coupe d'or, pleine des abominations et de l'impureté de sa fornication. | 4 And the woman was clothed round about with purple and scarlet, and gilt with gold, and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand, full of the abomination and filthiness of her fornication. |
| 5 Et sur son front était écrit ce nom : Mystère ; Babylone la grande, la mère des fornications et des abominations de la terre. | 5 And on her forehead a name was written: A mystery; Babylon the great, the mother of the fornications, and the abominations of the earth. |
| 6 Et je vis cette femme, ivre du sang des saints, et du sang des martyrs de Jésus ; et en la voyant, je fus frappé d'un grand étonnement. | 6 And I saw the woman drunk with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus. And I wondered, when I had seen her, with great admiration. |
| 7 Et l'ange me dit : Pourquoi t'étonnes-tu ? Je te dirai le mystère de la femme, et de la bête qui la porte, et qui a sept têtes et dix cornes. | 7 And the angel said to me: Why dost thou wonder? I will tell thee the mystery of the woman, and of the beast which carrieth her, which hath the seven heads and ten horns. |
| 8 La bête que tu as vue était et n'est plus ; elle doit monter de l'abîme et aller à la ruine (perdition) ; et les habitants de la terre dont les noms ne sont pas écrits dans le livre de vie depuis la création du monde, s'étonneront en voyant la bête, qui était et qui n'est plus. | 8 The beast, which thou sawest, was, and is not, and shall come up out of the bottomless pit, and go into destruction: and the inhabitants on the earth (whose names are not written in the book of life from the foundation of the world) shall wonder, seeing the beast that was, and is not. |
| 9 Et ici il faut une intelligence qui ait de la sagesse. Les sept têtes sont sept montagnes sur lesquelles la femme est assise ; elles sont aussi sept rois. | 9 And here is the understanding that hath wisdom. The seven heads are seven mountains, upon which the woman sitteth, and they are seven kings: |
| 10 Cinq sont tombés ; l'un est, et l'autre n'est pas encore venu, et quand il sera venu, il doit demeurer peu de temps. | 10 Five are fallen, one is, and the other is not yet come: and when he is come, he must remain a short time. |
| 11 La bête, qui était et qui n'est plus, est elle-même la huitième ; et elle est des sept, et elle va à la ruine (perdition). | 11 And the beast which was, and is not: the same also is the eighth, and is of the seven, and goeth into destruction. |
| 12 Et les dix cornes que tu as vues sont dix rois qui n'ont pas encore reçu la royauté ; mais ils recevront la puissance comme rois pendant une heure, avec la bête. | 12 And the ten horns which thou sawest, are ten kings, who have not yet received a kingdom, but shall receive power as kings one hour after the beast. |
| 13 Ils ont un même dessein, et ils donneront leur force et leur puissance à la bête. | 13 These have one design: and their strength and power they shall deliver to the beast. |
| 14 Ils combattront contre l'Agneau, et l'Agneau les vaincra, parce qu'il est le Seigneur des seigneurs, et le Roi des rois ; et ceux qui sont avec lui sont les appelés (les) élus et (les) fidèles. | 14 These shall fight with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them, because he is Lord of lords, and King of kings, and they that are with him are called, and elect, and faithful. |
| 15 Et il me dit : Les eaux que tu as vues à l'endroit où la prostituée est assise, sont des peuples, des nations et des langues. | 15 And he said to me: The waters which thou sawest, where the harlot sitteth, are peoples, and nations, and tongues. |
| 16 Et les dix cornes que tu as vues sur la bête haïront la prostituée, et la rendront désolée et nue, et dévoreront ses chairs, et la (ils les) brûleront elle-même avec le feu. | 16 And the ten horns which thou sawest in the beast: these shall hate the harlot, and shall make her desolate and naked, and shall eat her flesh, and shall burn her with fire. |
| 17 Car Dieu leur a mis dans le cœur de faire ce qui lui plaît, et de donner la royauté à la bête, jusqu'à ce que les paroles de Dieu soient accomplies. | 17 For God hath given into their hearts to do that which pleaseth him: that they give their kingdom to the beast, till the words of God be fulfilled. |
| 18 Et la femme que tu as vue, c'est la grande ville, qui a la royauté sur les rois de la terre. | 18 And the woman which thou sawest, is the great city, which hath kingdom over the kings of the earth. |
