| 2 Les Philistins l'ayant appris, et le bruit s'étant répandu parmi eux que Samson était entré dans la ville, ils l'environnèrent, et mirent des gardes aux portes de la ville, où ils l'attendirent en silence toute la nuit pour le tuer le matin lorsqu'il sortirait. | 2 The Gazites were told, "Samson has come here," and they surrounded the place and lay in wait for him all night at the gate of the city. They kept quiet all night, saying, "Let us wait till the light of the morning; then we will kill him." |
| 3 Samson dormit jusque vers minuit (milieu de la nuit). Et s'étant levé alors, il alla prendre les deux battants d'une (de la) porte avec leurs poteaux et la barre, les mit sur ses épaules, et les porta sur le haut de la montagne qui regarde Hébron. | 3 But Samson lay till midnight, and at midnight he arose and took hold of the doors of the gate of the city and the two posts, and pulled them up, bar and all, and put them on his shoulders and carried them to the top of the hill that is before Hebron. |
| 4 Après cela, il aima une femme qui demeurait dans la vallée de Sorec, et qui s'appelait Dalila. | 4 After this he loved a woman in the valley of Sorek, whose name was Delilah. |
| 5 Et les princes des Philistins vinrent trouver cette femme et lui dirent : Trompe Samson et sache de lui d'où lui vient une si grande force, et comment nous pourrions le vaincre et le tourmenter après l'avoir lié. Si tu fais cela, nous te donnerons chacun onze cents pièces d'argent. | 5 And the lords of the Philistines came to her and said to her, "Entice him, and see wherein his great strength lies, and by what means we may overpower him, that we may bind him to subdue him; and we will each give you eleven hundred pieces of silver." |
| 6 Dalila dit donc à Samson : Dis-moi, je te prie, d'où vient ta si (très) grande force, et avec quoi il faudrait te lier pour t'empêcher de fuir. | 6 And Delilah said to Samson, "Please tell me wherein your great strength lies, and how you might be bound, that one could subdue you." |
| 7 Samson lui dit : Si on me liait avec sept cordes à (de) boyaux qui ne fussent pas sèches, mais qui eussent encore leur humidité, je deviendrais faible comme les autres hommes. | 7 And Samson said to her, "If they bind me with seven fresh bowstrings which have not been dried, then I shall become weak, and be like any other man." |
| 8 Les princes (satrapes) des Philistins lui apportèrent donc sept cordes, comme il avait dit, dont elle le lia ; | 8 Then the lords of the Philistines brought her seven fresh bowstrings which had not been dried, and she bound him with them. |
| 9 et ayant fait cacher dans sa chambre des hommes qui attendaient l'issue de cette action, elle lui cria : (Voilà) les Philistins sur toi, Samson ! Et aussitôt il rompit les cordes comme se romprait un fil d'étoupe lorsqu'il sent le feu ; et on ne connut point d'où lui venait cette grande (sa) force. | 9 Now she had men lying in wait in an inner chamber. And she said to him, "The Philistines are upon you, Samson!" But he snapped the bowstrings, as a string of tow snaps when it touches the fire. So the secret of his strength was not known. |
| 10 Et Dalila lui dit : Tu t'es joué de moi et tu m'as dit un mensonge. Découvre-moi donc au moins maintenant avec quoi il faudrait te lier. | 10 And Delilah said to Samson, "Behold, you have mocked me, and told me lies; please tell me how you might be bound." |
| 11 Samson lui répondit : Si on me liait avec des cordes neuves dont on ne se serait jamais servi, je deviendrais faible et semblable aux autres hommes. | 11 And he said to her, "If they bind me with new ropes that have not been used, then I shall become weak, and be like any other man." |
| 12 Dalila l'en ayant encore lié, après avoir fait caché des gens dans sa chambre, elle lui cria : (Voilà) les Philistins sur toi, Samson ! Et aussitôt il rompit ses cordes comme on romprait des fils (de toile). | 12 So Delilah took new ropes and bound him with them, and said to him, "The Philistines are upon you, Samson!" And the men lying in wait were in an inner chamber. But he snapped the ropes off his arms like a thread. |
| 13 Dalila lui dit encore : Jusqu'à quand me tromperas-tu, et me diras-tu des choses fausses ? Dis-moi donc avec quoi il faudrait te lier. Samson lui dit : Si tu entortilles sept cheveux de ma tête avec la chaîne du tissu (fil de la trame), et qu'ayant fait passer un clou par dedans, tu l'enfonces dans la terre, je deviendrai faible. | 13 And Delilah said to Samson, "Until now you have mocked me, and told me lies; tell me how you might be bound." And he said to her, "If you weave the seven locks of my head with the web and make it tight with the pin, then I shall become weak, and be like any other man." |
| 14 Ce que Dalila ayant fait, elle lui dit : (Voilà) les Philistins sur toi, Samson ! Et s'éveillant tout à coup, il arracha le clou avec ses cheveux et la chaîne de tissu (fil de la trame). | 14 So while he slept, Delilah took the seven locks of his head and wove them into the web. And she made them tight with the pin, and said to him, "The Philistines are upon you, Samson!" But he awoke from his sleep, and pulled away the pin, the loom, and the web. |
| 15 Alors Dalila lui dit : Comment dis-tu que tu m'aimes, puisque ton cœur n'est pas avec moi ? Tu m'as menti par trois fois, et tu n'as pas voulu me dire d'où vient ta (très) grande force. | 15 And she said to him, "How can you say, 'I love you,' when your heart is not with me? You have mocked me these three times, and you have not told me wherein your great strength lies." |
| 16 Et comme elle l'importunait sans cesse, se tenant plusieurs jours attachée auprès de lui, sans lui donner aucun temps pour se reposer, son âme tomba dans la défaillance et se lassa jusqu'à la mort. | 16 And when she pressed him hard with her words day after day, and urged him, his soul was vexed to death. |
| 17 Alors, lui découvrant toute la vérité de la chose, il lui dit : La rasoir n'a jamais passé sur ma tête, parce que je suis nazaréen, c'est-à-dire consacré à Dieu dès le sein de ma mère. Si l'on me rase la tête, (toute) ma force m'abandonnera, et je deviendrai faible comme les autres hommes. | 17 And he told her all his mind, and said to her, "A razor has never come upon my head; for I have been a Nazirite to God from my mother's womb. If I be shaved, then my strength will leave me, and I shall become weak, and be like any other man." |
| 18 Dalila, voyant qu'il lui avait confessé tout ce qu'il avait au cœur, envoya vers les princes des Philistins, et leur fit dire : Venez encore cette fois, parce qu'il m'a maintenant ouvert son cœur. Ils vinrent donc chez elle, portant avec eux l'argent qu'ils lui avaient promis. | 18 When Delilah saw that he had told her all his mind, she sent and called the lords of the Philistines, saying, "Come up this once, for he has told me all his mind." Then the lords of the Philistines came up to her, and brought the money in their hands. |
| 19 (Ainsi) Dalila fit dormir Samson sur ses genoux et lui fit reposer la tête dans son sein ; et ayant mandé un barbier, elle lui fit raser les sept touffes (tresses) de ses cheveux ; après quoi elle commença à le chasser et à le repousser d'auprès d'elle, car sa force l'abandonna au même moment. | 19 She made him sleep upon her knees; and she called a man, and had him shave off the seven locks of his head. Then she began to torment him, and his strength left him. |
| 20 Et elle lui dit : (Voilà) les Philistins sur toi, Samson ! Samson, s'éveillant, dit en lui-même : J'en sortirai comme j'ai fait auparavant, et je me dégagerai d'eux ; car il ne savait pas que le Seigneur s'était retiré de lui. | 20 And she said, "The Philistines are upon you, Samson!" And he awoke from his sleep, and said, "I will go out as at other times, and shake myself free." And he did not know that the LORD had left him. |
| 21 Les Philistins, l'ayant donc pris, lui arrachèrent aussitôt les yeux, et ils le conduisirent à Gaza chargé de chaînes ; ils l'enfermèrent dans une prison, où ils lui firent tourner la meule (d'un moulin). | 21 And the Philistines seized him and gouged out his eyes, and brought him down to Gaza, and bound him with bronze fetters; and he ground at the mill in the prison. |
| 22 Or ses cheveux commençaient déjà à revenir, | 22 But the hair of his head began to grow again after it had been shaved. |
| 23 lorsque les princes des Philistins s'assemblèrent tous pour immoler des victimes solennelles à leur dieu Dagon, et pour faire des festins de réjouissance, en disant : Notre dieu nous a livré entre les mains Samson notre ennemi. | 23 Now the lords of the Philistines gathered to offer a great sacrifice to Dagon their god, and to rejoice; for they said, "Our god has given Samson our enemy into our hand." |
| 24 Et le peuple, voyant cela, louait aussi son dieu, en disant comme eux : Notre dieu a livré entre nos mains notre ennemi, qui a ruiné notre pays et qui a fait tant de victimes (tué un grand nombre de Philistins). | 24 And when the people saw him, they praised their god; for they said, "Our god has given our enemy into our hand, the ravager of our country, who has slain many of us." |
| 25 Ils firent donc des festins avec de grandes réjouissances ; et après le repas ils commandèrent que l'on fit venir Samson, afin qu'il jouât devant eux. Samson, ayant été amené de la prison, jouait devant les Philistins, et ils le firent tenir debout entre (les) deux colonnes. | 25 And when their hearts were merry, they said, "Call Samson, that he may make sport for us." So they called Samson out of the prison, and he made sport before them. They made him stand between the pillars; |
| 26 Alors Samson dit au jeune homme (à l'enfant) qui le conduisait : Laisse-moi toucher les colonnes qui soutiennent toute la maison, afin que je m'appuie dessus et que je prenne un peu de repos. | 26 and Samson said to the lad who held him by the hand, "Let me feel the pillars on which the house rests, that I may lean against them." |
| 27 Or la maison était pleine d'hommes et de femmes. Tous les princes des Philistins y étaient, et il y avait environ trois mille personnes de l'un et de l'autre sexe, qui du haut de la maison regardaient jouer Samson. | 27 Now the house was full of men and women; all the lords of the Philistines were there, and on the roof there were about three thousand men and women, who looked on while Samson made sport. |
| 28 Samson, ayant alors invoqué le Seigneur, lui dit : Seigneur Dieu, souvenez-vous de moi, mon Dieu ; rendez-moi maintenant ma première force, afin que je me venge (tire une seule vengeance, note) de mes ennemis, et que je leur rende (en une seule fois) ce qui leur est dû pour la perte de mes deux yeux. | 28 Then Samson called to the LORD and said, "O Lord GOD, remember me, I pray thee, and strengthen me, I pray thee, only this once, O God, that I may be avenged upon the Philistines for one of my two eyes." |
| 29 Et prenant les deux colonnes sur lesquelles la maison était appuyée, tenant l'une de la main droite et l'autre de la gauche, | 29 And Samson grasped the two middle pillars upon which the house rested, and he leaned his weight upon them, his right hand on the one and his left hand on the other. |
| 30 il dit : Que je meure avec les Philistins ! Et les colonnes ayant été violemment ébranlées, la maison tomba sur tous les princes et sur le reste du peuple qui était là ; et Samson en tua beaucoup plus en mourant qu'il n'en avait tué pendant sa vie. | 30 And Samson said, "Let me die with the Philistines." Then he bowed with all his might; and the house fell upon the lords and upon all the people that were in it. So the dead whom he slew at his death were more than those whom he had slain during his life. |
| 31 (Or) Ses frères et tous ses parents, étant venus en ce lieu, prirent son corps et l'ensevelirent entre Saraa et Esthaol, dans le sépulcre de son père Manué. Il avait été juge d'Israël pendant vingt ans. | 31 Then his brothers and all his family came down and took him and brought him up and buried him between Zorah and Eshta-ol in the tomb of Manoah his father. He had judged Israel twenty years. |
