| 1 Après qu'ils furent passés, le Seigneur dit à Josué : | 1 And when they had crossed over, the Lord said to Joshua: |
| 2 Choisis douze hommes, un de chaque tribu, | 2 “Choose twelve men, one from each tribe, |
| 3 et commande-leur d'emporter du milieu du lit du Jourdain, où les pieds des prêtres se sont arrêtés, douze pierres très dures, que vous mettrez dans le camp au lieu où vous aurez dressé vos tentes cette nuit. | 3 and instruct them so that they may take from the midst of the channel of the Jordan, where the feet of the priests stood still, twelve very hard stones, which you shall station in the place of the camp, where you will pitch your tents this night.” |
| 4 Josué appela donc (les) douze hommes qu'il avait choisis d'entre les enfants d'Israël, un de chaque tribu, | 4 And Joshua called twelve men, whom he had chosen from the sons of Israel, one from each tribe, |
| 5 et il leur dit : Allez devant l'arche du Seigneur votre Dieu au milieu du Jourdain, et que chacun de vous emporte de là une pierre sur ses épaules, selon le nombre des enfants d'Israël, | 5 and he said to them: “Go before the ark of the Lord your God into the middle of the Jordan, and let each one carry from there one stone on your shoulders, according to the number of the sons of Israel, |
| 6 afin qu'elles servent de signe (et de monument) parmi vous ; et à l'avenir, quand vos enfants vous demanderont : Que signifient ces pierres ? | 6 so that it may be a sign among you. And when your sons will ask you, tomorrow, saying, ‘What do these stones mean to you?’ |
| 7 vous leur répondrez : Les eaux du Jourdain se sont desséchées devant l'arche d'alliance du Seigneur, lorsqu'elle passait à travers ce fleuve ; c'est pourquoi ces pierres ont été mises en ce lieu, pour servir aux enfants d'Israël de monument éternel. | 7 you shall respond to them: ‘The waters of the Jordan failed before the ark of the covenant of the Lord, when the ark crossed over it. For this reason, these stones were placed as a monument for the sons of Israel, even forever.’ ” |
| 8 Les enfants d'Israël firent donc ce que Josué leur avait demandé. Ils prirent du milieu du lit du Jourdain douze pierres, selon le nombre des enfants d'Israël, comme le Seigneur le leur avait commandé ; et les portant jusqu'au lieu où ils campèrent, ils les posèrent là. | 8 Therefore, the sons of Israel did as Joshua instructed them, carrying twelve stones from the midst of the channel of the Jordan, just as the Lord had ordered him, according to the number of the sons of Israel, as far as the place where they made camp, and there they stationed them. |
| 9 Josué mit aussi douze autres pierres au milieu du lit du Jourdain où les prêtres qui portaient l'arche d'alliance s'étaient arrêtés, et elles y sont demeurées jusqu'à ce jour. | 9 Similarly, Joshua positioned another twelve stones in the middle of the channel of the Jordan, where the priests stood who were carrying the ark of the covenant; and they are there, even to the present day. |
| 10 Or les prêtres qui portaient l'arche se tenaient au milieu du Jourdain, jusqu'à ce que fût accompli tout ce que le Seigneur avait commandé à Josué de dire au peuple, et que Moïse lui avait dit. Et le peuple se hâta, et passa le fleuve. | 10 Now the priests who were carrying the ark stood in the midst of the Jordan, until everything was accomplished which the Lord had instructed Joshua to speak to the people and which Moses had said to him. And the people hurried, and they passed over. |
| 11 Et après que tous furent passés, l'arche du Seigneur passa aussi, et les prêtres allèrent se placer devant le peuple. | 11 And when they had all crossed, the ark of the Lord also crossed, and the priests advanced before the people. |
| 12 Les enfants de Ruben et de Gad, et la demi-tribu de Manassé allaient aussi en armes devant les enfants d'Israël, selon que Moïse le leur avait ordonné ; | 12 Likewise, the sons of Reuben, and of Gad, and of the one half tribe of Manasseh advanced with weapons before the sons of Israel, just as Moses had instructed them. |
| 13 et (leurs) quarante mille combattants marchaient sous leurs enseignes en plusieurs troupes (par bandes et par bataillons) à travers la plaine et les campagnes de la ville de Jéricho. | 13 And forty thousand fighters, by companies and divisions, advanced through the plains and fields of the city of Jericho. |
| 14 En ce jour-là, le Seigneur exalta Josué devant tout Israël, afin qu'ils le respectassent (craignissent) comme ils avaient respecté Moïse pendant qu'il vivait. | 14 In that day, the Lord magnified Joshua in the sight of all Israel, so that they would fear him, just as they had feared Moses while he lived. |
| 15 Et il dit à Josué : | 15 And he said to him, |
| 16 Ordonne aux prêtres qui portent l'arche d'alliance de sortir du Jourdain. | 16 “Command the priests who are carrying the ark of the covenant to ascend from the Jordan.” |
| 17 Josué leur donna cet ordre, et leur dit : Sortez du Jourdain. | 17 And he commanded them, saying, “Ascend from the Jordan.” |
| 18 Et les prêtres qui portaient l'arche d'alliance du Seigneur étant sortis du fleuve et ayant commencé à marcher sur la terre sèche, les eaux du Jourdain revinrent dans leur lit, et coulèrent comme auparavant. | 18 And when those who were carrying the ark of the covenant of the Lord had ascended, and they began to step on dry soil, the waters returned to their channel, and they flowed as they usually did before. |
| 19 Or le peuple sortit du Jourdain le dixième jour du premier mois, et ils campèrent à Galgala vers le côté de l'orient de la ville de Jéricho. | 19 Now the people ascended from the Jordan on the tenth day of the first month, and they encamped at Gilgal, opposite the eastern portion of the city of Jericho. |
| 20 Josué mit aussi à Galgala les douze pierres qui avaient été prises au fond du Jourdain, | 20 Likewise, the twelve stones that they had taken up from the channel of the Jordan, Joshua stationed at Gilgal. |
| 21 et il dit aux enfants d'Israël : Quand vos enfants interrogeront un jour leurs pères, et leur diront : Que signifient ces pierres ? | 21 And he said to the sons of Israel: “When your sons will question their fathers, tomorrow, and they will say to them, ‘What do these stones mean to you?’ |
| 22 vous leur apprendrez, et vous leur direz : Israël a passé à pied sec à travers le lit du Jourdain, | 22 you shall teach them, and you shall say: ‘Israel passed over this Jordan, through the dry channel.’ |
| 23 le Seigneur votre Dieu ayant desséché les eaux devant vous, jusqu'à ce que vous fussiez passés, | 23 For the Lord your God dried up its waters in your sight, until you crossed over, |
| 24 comme il avait fait auparavant pour la mer Rouge, dont il dessécha les eaux, jusqu'à ce que nous fussions passés ; | 24 just as he had done before, at the Red Sea, which he dried up until we crossed over. |
| 25 afin que tous les peuples de la terre reconnaissent la main toute-puissante du Seigneur, et que vous appreniez vous-mêmes à craindre en tout temps le Seigneur votre Dieu. | 25 So may all the peoples of the earth learn of the very powerful hand of the Lord. So may you also fear the Lord your God for all time.” |
