| 1 Ne suis-je pas libre ? Ne suis-je pas apôtre ? N'ai-je pas vu le Christ Jésus Notre Seigneur ? N'êtes-vous pas mon œuvre dans le Seigneur ? | 1 Am I not free? Am I not an Apostle? Have I not seen Christ Jesus our Lord? Are you not my work in the Lord? |
| 2 Et si pour d'autres je ne suis pas apôtre, je le suis au moins pour vous ; car vous êtes le sceau de mon apostolat dans le Seigneur. | 2 And if I am not an Apostle to others, yet still I am to you. For you are the seal of my Apostleship in the Lord. |
| 3 C'est là ma défense auprès de ceux qui me reprennent (la voici :). | 3 My defense with those who question me is this: |
| 4 Est-ce que nous n'avons pas le droit de manger et de boire ? | 4 Do we not have the authority to eat and to drink? |
| 5 Est-ce que nous n'avons pas le droit de mener partout avec nous une femme sœur, comme font les autres Apôtres, et les frères du Seigneur, et Céphas ? | 5 Do we not have the authority to travel around with a woman who is a sister, just as do the other Apostles, and the brothers of the Lord, and Cephas? |
| 6 Ou bien, est-ce que moi seul, et Barnabé, nous n'avons pas le droit de faire cela ? | 6 Or is it only myself and Barnabas who do not have the authority to act in this way? |
| 7 Qui va jamais à la guerre à ses propres dépens ? Qui plante une vigne, et n'en mange pas le fruit ? Qui mène paître un troupeau, et ne se nourrit pas du lait du troupeau ? | 7 Who has ever served as a soldier and paid his own stipend? Who plants a vineyard and does not eat from its produce? Who pastures a flock and does not drink from the milk of the flock? |
| 8 Est-ce que je dis cela d'après l'usage des hommes ? La loi ne le dit-elle pas aussi ? | 8 Am I saying these things according to man? Or does the law not also say these things? |
| 9 Car il est écrit dans la loi de Moïse : Tu ne lieras pas la bouche au bœuf qui foule les grains. Dieu a-t-il souci des bœufs ? | 9 For it is written in the law of Moses: “You shall not bind the mouth of an ox, while it is treading out the grain.” Is God here concerned with the oxen? |
| 10 N'est-ce pas réellement (plutôt) pour nous qu'il dit cela ? Oui, c'est pour nous que ces choses ont été écrites ; en effet, celui qui laboure doit labourer avec espérance (de recueillir) ; et celui qui foule le grain doit le faire avec l'espérance de participer aux fruits. | 10 Or is he saying this, indeed, for our sake? These things were written specifically for us, because he who plows, ought to plow in hope, and he who threshes, too, in hope of receiving the produce. |
| 11 Si nous avons semé parmi vous les biens spirituels, est-ce une grande chose que nous moissonnions de vos biens temporels ? | 11 If we have sown spiritual things in you, is it important if we harvest from your worldly things? |
| 12 Si d'autres usent de ce pouvoir à votre égard, pourquoi pas plutôt nous-mêmes ? Mais nous n'avons point usé de ce pouvoir ; au contraire, nous souffrons tout, pour n'apporter aucun obstacle à l'Evangile du Christ. | 12 If others are sharers in this authority over you, why are we not more entitled? And yet we have not used this authority. Instead, we bear all things, lest we give any hindrance to the Gospel of Christ. |
| 13 Ne savez-vous pas que ceux qui font le service du temple mangent de ce qui est offert dans le temple, et que ceux qui servent à l'autel ont part à l'autel ? | 13 Do you not know that those who work in the holy place eat the things that are for the holy place, and that those who serve at the altar also share with the altar? |
| 14 De même, le Seigneur a aussi ordonné à ceux qui annoncent l'Evangile de vivre de l'Evangile. | 14 So, too, has the Lord ordained that those who announce the Gospel should live by the Gospel. |
| 15 Mais moi, je n'ai usé d'aucun de ces droits. Et je n'écris point ceci afin qu'on agisse de la sorte envers moi ; car j'aimerais mieux mourir que de laisser quelqu'un m'enlever ce sujet de gloire. | 15 Yet I have used none of these things. And I have not written so that these things may be done for me. For it is better for me to die, rather than to let anyone empty out my glory. |
| 16 Car si j'annonce l'Evangile, ce n'est pas une gloire pour moi, puisque la nécessité m'en est imposée ; et malheur à moi, si je n'annonce pas l'Evangile ! | 16 For if I preach the Gospel, it is not glory for me. For an obligation has been laid upon me. And woe to me, if I do not preach the Gospel. |
| 17 Si je le fais de bon cœur, j'ai une récompense ; mais si je le fais malgré moi, je dispense seulement ce qui m'a été confié. | 17 For if I do this willingly, I have a reward. But if I do this reluctantly, a dispensation is granted to me. |
| 18 Quelle est donc ma récompense ? C'est que, prêchant l'Evangile, je le prêche gratuitement, sans abuser du pouvoir que j'ai dans la prédication de l'Evangile. | 18 And what, then, would be my reward? So, when preaching the Gospel, I should give the Gospel without taking, so that I may not misuse my authority in the Gospel. |
| 19 Car bien que libre à l'égard de tous, je me suis fait le serviteur de tous, pour en gagner un plus grand nombre. | 19 For when I was a free man to all, I made myself the servant of all, so that I might gain all the more. |
| 20 Je me suis fait comme Juif avec les Juifs, pour gagner les Juifs ; | 20 And so, to the Jews, I became like a Jew, so that I might gain the Jews. |
| 21 avec ceux qui sont sous la loi, comme si j'eusse encore été sous la loi (quoique je ne fusse plus sous (assujetti à) la loi), pour gagner ceux qui sont sous la loi ; avec ceux qui étaient sans loi, comme si j'eusse été sans loi (quoique je ne fusse pas sans la loi de Dieu, étant sous la loi du Christ), pour gagner ceux qui étaient sans loi. | 21 To those who are under the law, I became as if I were under the law, (though I was not under the law) so that I might gain those who were under the law. To those who were without the law, I became as if I were without the law, (though I was not without the law of God, being in the law of Christ) so that I might gain those who were without the law. |
| 22 Je me suis rendu faible avec les faibles, pour gagner les faibles ; je me suis fait tout à tous, pour les sauver tous. | 22 To the weak, I became weak, so that I might gain the weak. To all, I became all, so that I might save all. |
| 23 Je fais tout à cause de l'Évangile, afin d'en avoir ma part. | 23 And I do everything for the sake of the Gospel, so that I may become its partner. |
| 24 Ne savez-vous pas que ceux qui courent dans le stade (la lice, note) courent tous, mais qu'un seul remporte le prix ? Courez de manière à le remporter. | 24 Do you not know that, of those who run in a race, all of them, certainly, are runners, but only one achieves the prize. Similarly, you must run, so that you may achieve. |
| 25 Or, tous ceux qui combattent dans l'arène s'abstiennent de tout ; et ils le font pour obtenir une couronne corruptible ; mais nous, pour une incorruptible. | 25 And one who competes in a contest abstains from all things. And they do this, of course, so that they may achieve a corruptible crown. But we do this, so that we may achieve what is incorruptible. |
| 26 Moi donc, je cours, et non comme au hasard. Je combats, et non comme frappant l'air ; | 26 And so I run, but not with uncertainty. And so I fight, but not by flailing in the air. |
| 27 mais je châtie mon corps, et je le réduis en servitude, de peur qu'après avoir prêché aux autres, je ne sois moi-même réprouvé. | 27 Instead, I chastise my body, so as to redirect it into servitude. Otherwise, I might preach to others, but become myself an outcast. |
