| 2 et ayant trouvé un vaisseau qui faisait la traversée vers la Phénicie, nous y montâmes et fîmes voile. | 2 Here we found a ship bound for Phoenicia, so we went on board and sailed in her. |
| 3 Quand nous fûmes en vue de l'île de Chypre, la laissant à gauche, nous naviguâmes vers la Syrie, et nous vînmes à Tyr, où le vaisseau devait déposer son chargement. | 3 After sighting Cyprus and leaving it to port, we sailed to Syria and put in at Tyre, since the ship was tounload her cargo there. |
| 4 Y ayant trouvé des disciples, nous y demeurâmes sept jours ; par l'Esprit-Saint, ils disaient à Paul de ne pas monter à Jérusalem. | 4 We sought out the disciples and stayed there a week. Speaking in the Spirit, they kept tel ing Paul notto go on to Jerusalem, |
| 5 Les sept jours écoulés, nous partîmes ; tous, avec leurs femmes et leurs enfants, nous conduisirent jusque hors de la ville, et nous étant mis à genoux sur le rivage, nous priâmes. | 5 but when our time was up we set off. Together with the women and children they all escorted us on ourway til we were out of the town. When we reached the beach, we knelt down and prayed; |
| 6 Après nous être dit adieu mutuellement, nous montâmes sur le vaisseau, et ils retournèrent chez eux. | 6 then, after saying good -- bye to each other, we went aboard and they returned home. |
| 7 Pour nous, achevant notre navigation depuis Tyr, nous descendîmes à Ptolémaïs ; et ayant salué les frères, nous restâmes un jour auprès d'eux. | 7 The end of our voyage from Tyre came when we landed at Ptolemais, where we greeted the brothersand stayed one day with them. |
| 8 Le lendemain, étant partis, nous vînmes à Césarée ; et entrant dans la maison de Philippe l'évangéliste, qui était un des sept, nous demeurâmes chez lui. | 8 The next day we left and came to Caesarea. Here we cal ed on Philip the evangelist, one of the Seven,and stayed with him. |
| 9 Il avait quatre filles vierges, qui prophétisaient. | 9 He had four unmarried daughters who were prophets. |
| 10 Comme nous demeurions là pendant quelques jours, il arriva de Judée un prophète, nommé Agabus. | 10 When we had been there several days a prophet called Agabus arrived from Judaea. |
| 11 Etant venu auprès de nous, il prit la ceinture de Paul ; et se liant les pieds et les mains, il dit : Voici ce que dit l'Esprit-Saint : L'homme à qui appartient cette ceinture sera lié ainsi par les Juifs à Jérusalem, et ils le livreront entre les mains des gentils. | 11 He came up to us, took Paul's belt and tied up his own feet and hands, and said, 'This is what theHoly Spirit says, "The man to whom this girdle belongs wil be tied up like this by the Jews in Jerusalem andhanded over to the gentiles." ' |
| 12 Lorsque nous eûmes entendu cela, nous le priâmes, nous et ceux qui étaient de ce lieu-là, de ne pas monter à Jérusalem. | 12 When we heard this, we and al the local people urged Paul not to go on to Jerusalem. |
| 13 Alors Paul répondit : Que faites-vous, pleurant et affligeant mon cœur ? Car je suis prêt, non seulement à être lié, mais aussi à mourir à Jérusalem, pour le nom du Seigneur Jésus. | 13 To this he replied, 'What are you doing, weeping and breaking my heart? For my part, I am ready notonly to be bound but even to die in Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus.' |
| 14 Et comme nous ne pouvions pas le persuader, nous n'insistâmes pas, et nous dîmes : Que la volonté du Seigneur soit faite. | 14 And so, as he would not be persuaded, we gave up the attempt, saying, 'The Lord's wil be done.' |
| 15 Après ces quelques jours, ayant fait nos préparatifs, nous montâmes à Jérusalem. | 15 After this we made our preparations and went on up to Jerusalem. |
| 16 Quelques-uns des disciples de Césarée vinrent aussi avec nous, emmenant avec eux un certain Mnason, originaire de l'île de Chypre, ancien disciple, chez qui nous devions loger. | 16 Some of the disciples from Caesarea accompanied us and took us to the house of a Cypriot withwhom we were to lodge; he was cal ed Mnason and had been one of the earliest disciples. |
| 17 Quand nous fûmes arrivés à Jérusalem, les frères nous reçurent avec joie. | 17 On our arrival in Jerusalem the brothers gave us a very warm welcome. |
| 18 Le jour suivant Paul se rendit avec nous chez Jacques, et tous les anciens s'y réunirent. | 18 The next day Paul went with us to visit James, and all the elders were present. |
| 19 Après les avoir salués, il raconta en détail ce que Dieu avait fait parmi les gentils par son ministère. | 19 After greeting them he gave a detailed account of al that God had done among the gentiles throughhis ministry. |
| 20 Et eux, lorsqu'ils l'eurent entendu, glorifièrent Dieu, et lui dirent : Tu vois, frère, combien de milliers de Juifs sont devenus croyants ; et tous sont zélés pour la loi. | 20 They gave glory to God when they heard this. Then they said, 'You see, brother, how thousands ofJews have now become believers, al of them staunch upholders of the Law; |
| 21 Or ils ont entendu dire de toi que tu enseignes aux Juifs qui sont parmi les gentils à se séparer de Moïse, disant qu'ils ne doivent pas circoncire leurs fils, ni vivre selon les coutumes. | 21 and what they have heard about you is that you instruct al Jews living among the gentiles to breakaway from Moses, authorising them not to circumcise their children or to fol ow the customary practices. |
| 22 Qu'y a-t-il donc à faire ? Sans aucun doute, on se rassemblera en foule ; car ils apprendront que tu es arrivé. | 22 What is to be done? A crowd is sure to gather, for they wil hear that you have come. |
| 23 Fais donc ce que nous allons te dire. Nous avons quatre hommes qui ont fait un vœu ; | 23 So this is what we suggest that you should do; we have four men here who are under a vow; |
| 24 prends-les, purifie-toi avec eux, et supporte les frais pour qu'ils se fassent raser la tête ; et tous sauront que ce qu'ils ont entendu dire de toi est faux, et que toi aussi, tu te conduis en observateur de la loi. | 24 take these men along and be purified with them and pay al the expenses connected with the shavingof their heads. This wil let everyone know there is no truth in the reports they have heard about you, and thatyou too observe the Law by your way of life. |
| 25 Quant à ceux qui, parmi les gentils, sont devenus croyants, nous avons décidé et écrit qu'ils devaient s'abstenir de ce qui a été immolé aux idoles, du sang, des animaux étouffés et de la fornication. | 25 About the gentiles who have become believers, we have written giving them our decision that theymust abstain from things sacrificed to idols, from blood, from the meat of strangled animals and from il icitmarriages.' |
| 26 Alors Paul, ayant pris ces hommes, et s'étant purifié avec eux le jour suivant, entra dans le temple, en indiquant le jour où serait accomplie la purification, et où l'offrande serait présentée pour chacun d'eux. | 26 So the next day Paul took the men along and was purified with them, and he visited the Temple togive notice of the time when the period of purification would be over and the offering would have to be presentedon behalf of each of them. |
| 27 Mais comme les sept jours s'achevaient, les Juifs d'Asie, l'ayant vu dans le temple, soulevèrent tout le peuple, et mirent les mains sur lui, en criant : | 27 The seven days were nearly over when some Jews from Asia caught sight of him in the Temple andstirred up the crowd and seized him, |
| 28 Israélites, au secours ! Voici l'homme qui prêche partout et à tout le monde contre le peuple, la loi, et ce lieu ; et de plus il a introduit les gentils dans le temple, et a profané ce saint lieu. | 28 shouting, 'Men of Israel, help! This is the man who preaches to everyone everywhere against ourpeople, against the Law and against this place. He has even profaned this Holy Place by bringing Greeks intothe Temple.' |
| 29 En effet, ils avaient vu Trophime d'Ephèse avec lui dans la ville, et ils croyaient que Paul l'avait introduit dans le temple. | 29 They had, in fact, previously seen Trophimus the Ephesian in the city with him and thought that Paulhad brought him into the Temple. |
| 30 Toute la ville fut en émoi, et le peuple accourut de tous côtés : et s'étant saisis de Paul, ils le traînaient hors du temple, et aussitôt les portes furent fermées. | 30 This roused the whole city; people came running from al sides; they seized Paul and dragged him outof the Temple, and the gates were closed behind them. |
| 31 Comme ils cherchaient à le tuer, on annonça au tribun de la cohorte que tout Jérusalem était en confusion. | 31 While they were setting about killing him, word reached the tribune of the cohort that there was tumultal over Jerusalem. |
| 32 Ayant pris des soldats et des centurions, il courut à eux. Dès qu'ils virent le tribun et les soldats, ils cessèrent de frapper Paul. | 32 He immediately called out soldiers and centurions and charged down on the crowd, who stoppedbeating Paul when they saw the tribune and the soldiers. |
| 33 Alors le tribun, s'approchant, se saisit de lui et le fit lier de deux chaînes ; et il demandait qui il était et ce qu'il avait fait. | 33 When the tribune came up he took Paul into custody, had him bound with two chains and enquiredwho he was and what he had done. |
| 34 Mais dans la foule les uns criaient une chose, et les autres une autre. Et comme il ne pouvait rien apprendre de certain à cause du tumulte, il ordonna de le conduire dans la forteresse (le camp). | 34 People in the crowd called out different things, and since the noise made it impossible for him to getany positive information, the tribune ordered Paul to be taken into the fortress. |
| 35 Lorsque Paul fut arrivé sur les degrés, il dut être porté par les soldats, à cause de la violence du peuple. | 35 When Paul reached the steps, the crowd became so violent that he had to be carried by the soldiers; |
| 36 Car le peuple suivait en foule, criant : Fais-le mourir. | 36 and indeed the whole mob was after them, shouting, 'Do away with him!' |
| 37 Sur le point d'être introduit dans la forteresse (le camp), Paul dit au tribun : M'est-il permis de te dire quelque chose ? Le tribun dit : Tu sais le grec ? | 37 Just as Paul was being taken into the fortress, he asked the tribune if he could have a word with him.The tribune said, 'You speak Greek, then? |
| 38 N'es-tu pas l'Egyptien qui, ces jours passés, a excité une sédition et qui a emmené dans le désert quatre mille sicaires ? | 38 Aren't you the Egyptian who started the recent revolt and led those four thousand cut-throats out intothe desert?' |
| 39 Paul lui dit : Je suis Juif, de Tarse en Cilicie, citoyen d'une ville qui n'est pas inconnue. Mais je t'en prie, permets-moi de parler au peuple. | 39 'I?' said Paul, 'I am a Jew and a citizen of the wel -known city of Tarsus in Cilicia. Please give mepermission to speak to the people.' |
| 40 Le tribun l'ayant permis, Paul, debout sur les degrés, fit signe de la main au peuple. Il se fit un grand silence, et parlant en langue hébraïque, il dit : | 40 The man gave his consent and Paul, standing at the top of the steps, raised his hand to the people forsilence. A profound silence fol owed, and he started speaking to them in Hebrew. |
