| 1 Dès le matin, les princes des prêtres, ayant délibéré avec les anciens, et les scribes, et tout le conseil, lièrent Jésus, l'emmenèrent, et le livrèrent à Pilate. | 1 And straightway in the morning, the chief priests holding a consultation with the ancients and the scribes and the whole council, binding Jesus, led him away, and delivered him to Pilate. |
| 2 Et Pilate l'interrogea : Es-tu le roi des Juifs ? Jésus lui répondit : Tu le dis. | 2 And Pilate asked him: Art thou the king of the Jews? But he answering, saith to him: Thou sayest it. |
| 3 Les princes des prêtres l'accusèrent de beaucoup de choses. | 3 And the chief priests accused him in many things. |
| 4 Pilate l'interrogea de nouveau, en disant : Tu ne réponds rien ? Vois de combien de choses ils t'accusent. | 4 And Pilate again asked him, saying: Answerest thou nothing? behold in how many things they accuse thee. |
| 5 Mais Jésus ne répondit plus rien, de sorte que Pilate était étonné. | 5 But Jesus still answered nothing; so that Pilate wondered. |
| 6 Or, le jour de la fête, il avait coutume de leur délivrer un des prisonniers, celui qu'ils demandaient. | 6 Now on the festival day he was wont to release unto them one of the prisoners, whomsoever they demanded. |
| 7 Il y en avait un, nommé Barabbas, qui avait été emprisonné avec des séditieux, pour un meurtre qu'il avait commis dans une émeute. | 7 And there was one called Barabbas, who was put in prison with some seditious men, who in the sedition had committed murder. |
| 8 La foule, étant montée, se mit à réclamer ce qu'il leur accordait toujours. | 8 And when the multitude was come up, they began to desire that he would do, as he had ever done unto them. |
| 9 Pilate leur répondit, et dit : Voulez-vous que je vous délivre le toi des Juifs ? | 9 And Pilate answered them, and said: Will you that I release to you the king of the Jews? |
| 10 Car il savait que c'était par envie que les princes des prêtres l'avaient livré. | 10 For he knew that the chief priests had delivered him up out of envy. |
| 11 Mais les pontifes excitèrent la foule à demander qu'il délivrât plutôt Barabbas. | 11 But the chief priests moved the people, that he should rather release Barabbas to them. |
| 12 Pilate, prenant de nouveau la parole, leur dit : Que voulez-vous donc que je fasse du toi des Juifs ? | 12 And Pilate again answering, saith to them: What will you then that I do to the king of the Jews? |
| 13 Mais ils crièrent de nouveau : crucifie-le. | 13 But they again cried out: Crucify him. |
| 14 Pilate, cependant, leur disait : Mais quel mal a-t-il fait ? Et ils criaient encore plus fort : Crucifie-le. | 14 And Pilate saith to them: Why, what evil hath he done? But they cried out the more: Crucify him. |
| 15 Pilate, voulant satisfaire le peuple, leur remit Barabbas, et après avoir fait flagellé Jésus, il le livra pour être crucifié. | 15 And so Pilate being willing to satisfy the people, released to them Barabbas, and delivered up Jesus, when he had scourged him, to be crucified. |
| 16 Alors les soldats le conduisirent dans la cour du prétoire ; puis ils rassemblent toute la cohorte. | 16 And the soldiers led him away into the court of the palace, and they called together the whole band: |
| 17 Ils le revêt(ir)ent de pourpre, et lui mettent (mirent) sur la tête une couronne d'épines qu'ils avaient tressée. | 17 And they clothe him with purple, and platting a crown of thorns, they put it upon him. |
| 18 Ils se mirent ensuite à le saluer : Salut, roi des Juifs. | 18 And they began to salute him: Hail, king of the Jews. |
| 19 Ils lui frappaient la tête avec un roseau, et crachaient sur lui, et fléchissant les genoux, ils l'adoraient. | 19 And they struck his head with a reed: and they did spit on him. And bowing their knees, they adored him. |
| 20 Après s'être moqués de lui, ils lui ôtèrent la pourpre, et lui remirent ses vêtements ; puis ils l'emmenèrent pour le crucifier. | 20 And after they had mocked him, they took off the purple from him, and put his own garments on him, and they led him out to crucify him. |
| 21 Et ils contraignirent un certain Simon de Cyrène, père d'Alexandre et de Rufus, qui passait par là en revenant des champs, de porter la croix de Jésus. | 21 And they forced one Simon a Cyrenian who passed by, coming out of the country, the father of Alexander and of Rufus, to take up his cross. |
| 22 Ils le conduisirent ainsi au lieu appelé Golgotha ; ce qui signifie : lieu du Calvaire. | 22 And they bring him into the place called Golgotha, which being interpreted is, The place of Calvary. |
| 23 Et ils lui donnaient à boire du vin mêlé de myrrhe ; mais il n'en prit pas. | 23 And they gave him to drink wine mingled with myrrh; but he took it not. |
| 24 Après l'avoir crucifié, ils partagèrent ses vêtements, tirant au sort ce que chacun en apporterait. | 24 And crucifying him, they divided his garments, casting lots upon them, what every man should take. |
| 25 C'était la troisième heure quand ils le crucifièrent. | 25 And it was the third hour, and they crucified him. |
| 26 Et l'inscription qui indiquait la cause de sa condamnation portait : Le roi des Juifs. | 26 And the inscription of his cause was written over: THE KING OF THE JEWS. |
| 27 Ils crucifièrent avec lui deux voleurs, l'un à sa droite, et l'autre à sa gauche. | 27 And with him they crucify two thieves; the one on his right hand, and the other on his left. |
| 28 Ainsi fut accomplie cette parole de l'Ecriture : Il a été rangé parmi les criminels. | 28 And the scripture was fulfilled, which saith: And with the wicked he was reputed. |
| 29 Les passants le blasphémaient, branlant la tête, et disant : Eh ! Toi qui détruis le temple de Dieu et qui le rebâtis en trois jours, | 29 And they that passed by blasphemed him, wagging their heads, and saying: Vah, thou that destroyest the temple of God, and in three days buildest it up again; |
| 30 sauve-toi toi-même, en descendant de la croix. | 30 Save thyself, coming down from the cross. |
| 31 Pareillement, les princes des prêtres, se moquant de lui avec les scribes, se disaient l'un à l'autre : Il a sauvé les autres ; et il ne peut se sauver lui-même. | 31 In like manner also the chief priests mocking, said with the scribes one to another: He saved others; himself he cannot save. |
| 32 Que le Christ, le roi d'Israël, descende maintenant de la croix, afin que nous voyions et que nous croyions ! Ceux qui avaient été crucifiés avec lui l'insultaient aussi. | 32 Let Christ the king of Israel come down now from the cross, that we may see and believe. And they that were crucified with him reviled him. |
| 33 La sixième heure étant venue, les ténèbres couvrirent toute la terre, jusqu'à la neuvième heure. | 33 And when the sixth hour was come, there was darkness over the whole earth until the ninth hour. |
| 34 Et à la neuvième heure, Jésus poussa un grand cri, en disant : Eloï, Eloï, lamma sabacthani ? Ce qui signifie : Mon Dieu, mon Dieu, pourquoi m'avez-vous abandonné ? | 34 And at the ninth hour, Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying: Eloi, Eloi, lamma sabacthani? Which is, being interpreted, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? |
| 35 Quelques-uns de ceux qui étaient présents, l'ayant entendu, disaient : Voici qu'il appelle Elie. | 35 And some of the standers by hearing, said: Behold he calleth Elias. |
| 36 Et l'un d'eux courut, et remplit une éponge de vinaigre ; et l'ayant mise au bout d'un roseau, il lui présentait à boire, en disant : Laissez ; voyons si Elie viendra le détacher. | 36 And one running and filling a sponge with vinegar, and putting it upon a reed, gave him to drink, saying: Stay, let us see if Elias come to take him down. |
| 37 Mais Jésus, ayant poussé un grand cri, expira. | 37 And Jesus having cried out with a loud voice, gave up the ghost. |
| 38 Alors le voile du temple se déchira en deux, depuis le haut jusqu'en bas. | 38 And the veil of the temple was rent in two, from the top to the bottom. |
| 39 Et le centurion qui était en face de Jésus, voyant qu'il avait expiré en poussant ce grand cri, dit : Cet homme était vraiment le Fils de Dieu. | 39 And the centurion who stood over against him, seeing that crying out in this manner he had given up the ghost, said: Indeed this man was the son of God. |
| 40 Il y avait là aussi des femmes qui regardaient de loin ; parmi elles étaient Marie-Madeleine, et Marie, Mère de Jacques le Mineur et de Joseph, et Salomé, | 40 And there were also women looking on afar off: among whom was Mary Magdalen, and Mary the mother of James the less and of Joseph, and Salome: |
| 41 qui le suivaient et le servaient lorsqu'il était en Galilée ; et beaucoup d'autres encore, qui étaient montées avec lui à Jérusalem. | 41 Who also when he was in Galilee followed him, and ministered to him, and many other women that came up with him to Jerusalem. |
| 42 Le soir étant déjà venu, comme c'était la préparation, c'est-à-dire la veille du sabbat, | 42 And when evening was now come, (because it was the Parasceve, that is, the day before the sabbath,) |
| 43 Joseph d'Arimathie, membre distingué du conseil, qui attendait, lui aussi, le royaume de Dieu, vint et entra hardiment chez Pilate, et demanda le corps de Jésus. | 43 Joseph of Arimathea, a noble counsellor, who was also himself looking for the kingdom of God, came and went in boldly to Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus. |
| 44 Pilate s'étonna qu'il fût mort si tôt ; et ayant fait venir le centurion, il lui demanda s'il était déjà mort. | 44 But Pilate wondered that he should be already dead. And sending for the centurion, he asked him if he were already dead. |
| 45 Et lorsqu'il s'en fut assuré par le centurion, il donna le corps à Joseph. | 45 And when he had understood it by the centurion, he gave the body to Joseph. |
| 46 Joseph, ayant acheté un linceul, descendit Jésus de la croix, l'enveloppa dans le linceul, et le déposa dans un sépulcre qui était taillé dans le roc ; puis il roula une pierre à l'entrée du sépulcre. | 46 And Joseph buying fine linen, and taking him down, wrapped him up in the fine linen, and laid him in a sepulchre which was hewed out of a rock. And he rolled a stone to the door of the sepulchre. |
| 47 Cependant Marie-Madeleine, et Marie, mère de Joseph, regardaient où on le mettait. | 47 And Mary Magdalen, and Mary the mother of Joseph, beheld where he was laid. |
