| 1 Jésus étant donc né à Bethléem de Juda, aux jours du roi Hérode, voici que des Mages d'Orient vinrent à Jérusalem, | 1 Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, saying, |
| 2 disant : Où est le Roi des Juifs, qui vient de naître ? car nous avons vu Son étoile en Orient, et nous sommes venus L'adorer. | 2 "Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we have seen his star in the East, and have come to worship him." |
| 3 Or le roi Hérode, l'apprenant, fut troublé, et tout Jérusalem avec lui. | 3 When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him; |
| 4 Et rassemblant tous les princes des prêtres et les scribes du peuple, il s'enquit d'eux où devait naître le Christ. | 4 and assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born. |
| 5 Et ils lui dirent : A Bethléem de Juda ; car il a été ainsi écrit par le prophète : | 5 They told him, "In Bethlehem of Judea; for so it is written by the prophet: |
| 6 Et toi, Bethléem, terre de Juda, tu n'es certainement pas le plus petit des chefs-lieux de Juda, car c'est de toi que sortira le chef qui régira Israël Mon peuple. | 6 'And you, O Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who will govern my people Israel.'" |
| 7 Alors Hérode, ayant appelé secrètement les Mages, s'informa d'eux avec soin du temps où l'étoile leur était apparue. | 7 Then Herod summoned the wise men secretly and ascertained from them what time the star appeared; |
| 8 Puis, les envoyant à Bethléem, il dit : Allez, informez-vous avec soin de l'Enfant ; et lorsque vous L'aurez trouvé, faites-le-moi savoir, afin que moi aussi j'aille L'adorer. | 8 and he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, "Go and search diligently for the child, and when you have found him bring me word, that I too may come and worship him." |
| 9 Lorsqu'ils eurent entendu le roi, ils partirent. Et voici que l'étoile qu'ils avaient vue en Orient allait devant eux, jusqu'à ce que, arrivée au-dessus du lieu où était l'Enfant, elle s'arrêta. | 9 When they had heard the king they went their way; and lo, the star which they had seen in the East went before them, till it came to rest over the place where the child was. |
| 10 Or, en voyant l'étoile, ils se réjouirent d'une très grande joie. | 10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy; |
| 11 Et, entrant dans la maison, ils trouvèrent l'Enfant, avec Marie Sa Mère, et, se prosternant, ils L'adorèrent ; puis, ayant ouvert leurs trésors, ils Lui offrirent pour présents de l'or, de l'encens et de la myrrhe. | 11 and going into the house they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshipped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh. |
| 12 Et ayant reçu en songe l'avertissement de ne pas retourner auprès d'Hérode, ils revinrent par un autre chemin dans leur pays. | 12 And being warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed to their own country by another way. |
| 13 Lorsqu'ils furent partis, voici qu'un Ange du Seigneur apparut en songe à Joseph, disant : Lève-toi, prends l'Enfant et Sa Mère, et fuis en Egypte, et restes-y jusqu'à ce que je te parle ; car il arrivera qu'Hérode cherchera l'Enfant pour Le faire mourir. | 13 Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, "Rise, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there till I tell you; for Herod is about to search for the child, to destroy him." |
| 14 Joseph s'étant levé, prit l'Enfant et Sa Mère durant la nuit, et se retira en Egypte. | 14 And he rose and took the child and his mother by night, and departed to Egypt, |
| 15 Et il y resta jusqu'à la mort d'Hérode, afin que s'accomplît ce que le Seigneur avait dit par le prophète, en ces termes : J'ai rappelé Mon Fils d'Egypte. | 15 and remained there until the death of Herod. This was to fulfil what the Lord had spoken by the prophet, "Out of Egypt have I called my son." |
| 16 Alors Hérode, voyant qu'il avait été joué par les Mages, entra dans une grande colère ; et il envoya tuer tous les enfants qui étaient à Bethléem et dans tous ses environs, depuis l'âge de deux ans et au-dessous, selon le temps dont il s'était enquis auprès des Mages. | 16 Then Herod, when he saw that he had been tricked by the wise men, was in a furious rage, and he sent and killed all the male children in Bethlehem and in all that region who were two years old or under, according to the time which he had ascertained from the wise men. |
| 17 Alors s'accomplit ce qui avait été dit par le prophète Jérémie, en ces termes : | 17 Then was fulfilled what was spoken by the prophet Jeremiah: |
| 18 Une voix a été entendue à Rama, des pleurs et de grandes lamentations ; c'est Rachel pleurant ses enfants, et elle n'a pas voulu être consolée, parce qu'ils ne sont plus. | 18 "A voice was heard in Ramah, wailing and loud lamentation, Rachel weeping for her children; she refused to be consoled, because they were no more." |
| 19 Mais Hérode étant mort, voici qu'un Ange du Seigneur apparut en songe à Joseph, en Egypte, | 19 But when Herod died, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, saying, |
| 20 et dit : Lève-toi, prends l'Enfant et Sa Mère, et va dans le pays d'Israël ; car ceux qui en voulait à la vie de l'Enfant sont morts. | 20 "Rise, take the child and his mother, and go to the land of Israel, for those who sought the child's life are dead." |
| 21 Joseph, s'étant levé, prit l'Enfant et Sa Mère, et vint dans le pays d'Israël. | 21 And he rose and took the child and his mother, and went to the land of Israel. |
| 22 Mais ayant appris qu'Archélaüs régnait en Judée, à la place d'Hérode son père, il craignit d'y aller ; et, averti en songe, il se retira dans la province de Galilée. | 22 But when he heard that Archelaus reigned over Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there, and being warned in a dream he withdrew to the district of Galilee. |
| 23 Et il vint habiter dans une ville appelée Nazareth, afin que s'accomplît ce qui avait été dit par les prophètes : Il sera appelé Nazaréen. | 23 And he went and dwelt in a city called Nazareth, that what was spoken by the prophets might be fulfilled, "He shall be called a Nazarene." |
