| 1 En ce temps-là, Hérode le tétraque apprit ce qui se publiait de Jésus, | 1 At that time Herod the tetrarch heard about the fame of Jesus; |
| 2 et il dit à ses serviteurs : C'est Jean-Baptiste ; il est ressuscité d'entre les morts, et c'est pour cela que des miracles se font par lui. | 2 and he said to his servants, "This is John the Baptist, he has been raised from the dead; that is why these powers are at work in him." |
| 3 Car Hérode s'était saisi de Jean, et l'avait fait lier et mettre en prison, à cause d'Hérodiade, femme de son frère, | 3 For Herod had seized John and bound him and put him in prison, for the sake of Herodi-as, his brother Philip's wife; |
| 4 parce que Jean lui disait : il ne t'est pas permis d'avoir cette femme. | 4 because John said to him, "It is not lawful for you to have her." |
| 5 Et voulant le faire mourir, il craignit le peuple, qui regardait Jean comme un prophète. | 5 And though he wanted to put him to death, he feared the people, because they held him to be a prophet. |
| 6 Or, le jour de la naissance d'Hérode, la fille d'Hérodiade dansa au milieu des convives, et elle plut à Hérode ; | 6 But when Herod's birthday came, the daughter of Herodi-as danced before the company, and pleased Herod, |
| 7 aussi lui promit-il avec serment de lui donner tout ce qu'elle lui demanderait. | 7 so that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she might ask. |
| 8 Avertie d'abord par sa mère, elle lui dit : Donne-moi ici sur un plat la tête de Jean-Baptiste. | 8 Prompted by her mother, she said, "Give me the head of John the Baptist here on a platter." |
| 9 Le roi fut attristé ; mais, à cause de son serment et de ceux qui étaient à table avec lui, il ordonna qu'on la lui donnât. | 9 And the king was sorry; but because of his oaths and his guests he commanded it to be given; |
| 10 Et il envoya décapiter Jean dans la prison. | 10 he sent and had John beheaded in the prison, |
| 11 Et sa tête fut apportée sur un plat et donnée à la jeune fille, qui l'apporta à sa mère. | 11 and his head was brought on a platter and given to the girl, and she brought it to her mother. |
| 12 Alors ses disciples vinrent, prirent son corps et l'ensevelirent ; puis ils allèrent l'annoncer à Jésus. | 12 And his disciples came and took the body and buried it; and they went and told Jesus. |
| 13 Jésus, l'ayant appris, partit de là dans une barque, pour Se retirer à l'écart dans un lieu désert ; et les foules, l'ayant appris, Le suivirent à pied des villes voisines. | 13 Now when Jesus heard this, he withdrew from there in a boat to a lonely place apart. But when the crowds heard it, they followed him on foot from the towns. |
| 14 En sortant de la barque, Il vit une foule nombreuse, et Il en eut compassion, et Il guérit leurs malades. | 14 As he went ashore he saw a great throng; and he had compassion on them, and healed their sick. |
| 15 Le soir étant venu, Ses disciples s'approchèrent de Lui, en disant : Ce lieu est désert, et l'heure est déjà avancée ; renvoyez les foules, afin qu'elles aillent dans les villages pour s'acheter des vivres. | 15 When it was evening, the disciples came to him and said, "This is a lonely place, and the day is now over; send the crowds away to go into the villages and buy food for themselves." |
| 16 Mais Jésus leur dit : Il n'est pas nécessaire qu'ils s'en aillent, donnez-leur vous-mêmes à manger. | 16 Jesus said, "They need not go away; you give them something to eat." |
| 17 Ils Lui répondirent : Nous n'avons ici que cinq pains et deux poissons. | 17 They said to him, "We have only five loaves here and two fish." |
| 18 Il leur dit : Apportez-les-Moi ici. | 18 And he said, "Bring them here to me." |
| 19 Et après avoir ordonné à la foule de s'asseoir sur l'herbe, Il prit les cinq pains et les deux poissons, et, levant les yeux au Ciel, Il les bénit ; puis, rompant les pains, Il les donna à Ses disciples, et les disciples les donnèrent aux foules. | 19 Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass; and taking the five loaves and the two fish he looked up to heaven, and blessed, and broke and gave the loaves to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. |
| 20 Et tous mangèrent, et furent rassasiés ; et on emporta les restes, douze corbeilles pleines de morceaux. | 20 And they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up twelve baskets full of the broken pieces left over. |
| 21 Or le nombre de ceux qui mangèrent fut de cinq mille hommes, sans compter les femmes et les enfants. | 21 And those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children. |
| 22 Aussitôt Jésus pressa Ses disciples de monter dans la barque, et de Le précéder sur l'autre rive, pendant qu'Il renverrait les foules. | 22 Then he made the disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. |
| 23 Et lorsqu'Il eut renvoyé la foule, Il monta seul sur une montagne, pour prier ; et, le soir étant venu, Il était là seul. | 23 And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, |
| 24 Cependant la barque était battue par les flots au milieu de la mer, car le vent était contraire. | 24 but the boat by this time was many furlongs distant from the land, beaten by the waves; for the wind was against them. |
| 25 Mais, à la quatrième veille de la nuit, Jésus vint à eux, marchant sur la mer. | 25 And in the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea. |
| 26 Et Le voyant marcher sur la mer, ils furent troublés, et dirent : C'est un fantôme. Et ils poussèrent des cris d'effroi. | 26 But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, saying, "It is a ghost!" And they cried out for fear. |
| 27 Aussitôt Jésus leur parla, en disant : Ayez confiance ; c'est Moi, ne craignez point. | 27 But immediately he spoke to them, saying, "Take heart, it is I; have no fear." |
| 28 Pierre Lui répondit : Seigneur, si c'est Vous, ordonnez que j'aille à Vous sur les eaux. | 28 And Peter answered him, "Lord, if it is you, bid me come to you on the water." |
| 29 Jésus lui dit : Viens. Et Pierre, descendant de la barque, marchait sur l'eau pour aller à Jésus. | 29 He said, "Come." So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus; |
| 30 Mais, voyant la violence du vent, il eut peur ; et comme il commençait à enfoncer, il s'écria : Seigneur, sauvez-moi ! | 30 but when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, "Lord, save me." |
| 31 Et aussitôt Jésus, étendant la main, le saisit, et lui dit : Homme de peu de foi, pourquoi as-tu douté ? | 31 Jesus immediately reached out his hand and caught him, saying to him, "O man of little faith, why did you doubt?" |
| 32 Et lorsqu'ils furent montés dans la barque, le vent cessa. | 32 And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased. |
| 33 Alors ceux qui étaient dans la barque vinrent et L'adorèrent, en disant : Vous êtes vraiment le Fils de Dieu. | 33 And those in the boat worshipped him, saying, "Truly you are the Son of God." |
| 34 Lorsqu'ils eurent traversé la mer, ils vinrent dans le pays de Génésar. | 34 And when they had crossed over, they came to land at Gennesaret. |
| 35 Et les hommes de ce lieu, L'ayant reconnu, envoyèrent (chercher) dans toute cette région, et Lui présentèrent tous ceux qui étaient malades. | 35 And when the men of that place recognized him, they sent round to all that region and brought to him all that were sick, |
| 36 Et ils Le priaient de leur laisser seulement toucher la frange de Son vêtement. Et tous ceux qui la touchèrent furent guéris. | 36 and besought him that they might only touch the fringe of his garment; and as many as touched it were made well. |
