| 1 Alors Jonas fut saisi d'une grande affliction, et il s'irrita. | 1 But it displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he was very angry. |
| 2 Et il implora le Seigneur, et il dit : De grâce, Seigneur, n'est-ce pas là ce que je disais lorsque j'étais encore dans mon pays ? C'est pour cela que j'avais résolu de fuir à Tharsis ; car je sais que vous êtes un Dieu clément et miséricordieux, patient et plein de compassion, et qui pardonne les péchés. | 2 And he prayed unto the LORD, and said, I pray thee, O LORD, was not this my saying, when I was yet in my country? Therefore I fled before unto Tarshish: for I knew that thou art a gracious God, and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repentest thee of the evil. |
| 3 Et maintenant, Seigneur, retirez-moi donc mon âme, car la mort est meilleure pour moi que la vie. | 3 Therefore now, O LORD, take, I beseech thee, my life from me; for it is better for me to die than to live. |
| 4 Et le Seigneur dit : Penses-tu bien faire en t'irritant ? | 4 Then said the LORD, Doest thou well to be angry? |
| 5 Alors Jonas sortit de Ninive, et s'assit à l'orient de la ville ; et il se fit là un abri, sous lequel il se tint à l'ombre, jusqu'à ce qu'il vît ce qui arriverait à la ville. | 5 So Jonah went out of the city, and sat on the east side of the city, and there made him a booth, and sat under it in the shadow, till he might see what would become of the city. |
| 6 Le Seigneur Dieu fit naître un lierre qui monta sur la tête de Jonas, pour donner de l'ombre sur sa tête et pour le mettre à couvert, parce qu'il souffrait (s'était fatigué) ; et Jonas éprouva une grande joie au sujet du (de son) lierre. | 6 And the LORD God prepared a gourd, and made it to come up over Jonah, that it might be a shadow over his head, to deliver him from his grief. So Jonah was exceeding glad of the gourd. |
| 7 Le lendemain, à l'aurore, le Seigneur envoya un ver, qui piqua le lierre et le dessécha. | 7 But God prepared a worm when the morning rose the next day, and it smote the gourd that it withered. |
| 8 Et quand le soleil fut levé, le Seigneur fit souffler un vent chaud et brûlant ; et le soleil frappa sur la tête de Jonas, qui étouffait (de chaleur), et il souhaita de mourir, en disant : La mort est meilleure pour moi que la vie. | 8 And it came to pass, when the sun did arise, that God prepared a vehement east wind; and the sun beat upon the head of Jonah, that he fainted, and wished in himself to die, and said, It is better for me to die than to live. |
| 9 Alors le Seigneur dit à Jonas : Penses-tu bien faire en t'irritant au sujet de ce lierre ? Jonas répondit : Je fais bien de m'irriter jusqu'à la mort. | 9 And God said to Jonah, Doest thou well to be angry for the gourd? And he said, I do well to be angry, even unto death. |
| 10 Le Seigneur dit : Tu t'attristes au sujet d'un lierre qui ne t'a pas coûté de peine et que tu n'as pas fait croître, qui est né en une nuit et qui a péri en une nuit ; | 10 Then said the LORD, Thou hast had pity on the gourd, for the which thou hast not laboured, neither madest it grow; which came up in a night, and perished in a night: |
| 11 et moi je n'aurais pas pitié de Ninive, la grande ville, où il y a plus de cent vingt mille hommes qui ne savent pas discerner leur main droite d'avec leur main gauche, et un grand nombre d'animaux ? (.) | 11 And should not I spare Nineveh, that great city, wherein are more than sixscore thousand persons that cannot discern between their right hand and their left hand; and also much cattle? |
