| 1 cf2Cependant Judas Machabée et ceux qui étaient avec lui entraient secrètement dans les villages, et rassemblant leurs parents et leurs amis, et prenant avec eux ceux qui étaient demeurés fermes dans le judaïsme, ils attirèrent à eux six mille hommes. | 1 Then Judas Maccabeus, and they that were with him, went privily into the towns, and called their kinsfolks together, and took unto them all such as continued in the Jews' religion, and assembled about six thousand men. |
| 2 Et ils invoquaient le Seigneur, afin qu'il regardât (favorablement) son peuple que tout le monde foulait aux pieds, qu'il eût compassion de son temple qui était profané par les impies ; | 2 And they called upon the Lord, that he would look upon the people that was trodden down of all; and also pity the temple profaned of ungodly men; |
| 3 qu'il eût pitié aussi des ruines de la ville, qui allait être bientôt détruite, et qu'il écoutât la voix du sang qui criait vers lui ; | 3 And that he would have compassion upon the city, sore defaced, and ready to be made even with the ground; and hear the blood that cried unto him, |
| 4 qu'il se souvînt aussi des meurtres si injustes des (petits) enfants innocents, et des blasphèmes proférés contre son nom, et qu'il conçut de l'indignation contre ces excès (crimes). | 4 And remember the wicked slaughter of harmless infants, and the blasphemies committed against his name; and that he would shew his hatred against the wicked. |
| 5 Or Machabée, ayant assemblé une multitude, devenait formidable aux nations, car la colère du Seigneur se changea en miséricorde. | 5 Now when Maccabeis had his company about him, he could not be withstood by the heathen: for the wrath of the Lord was turned into mercy. |
| 6 Et tombant à l'improviste sur les villages et sur les villes, il les brûlait ; occupant les lieux les plus avantageux, il infligeait aux ennemies de nombreuses défaites (faisait un grand carnage des ennemis). | 6 Therefore he came at unawares, and burnt up towns and cities, and got into his hands the most commodious places, and overcame and put to flight no small number of his enemies. |
| 7 C'est (Mais c'était) surtout pendant les nuits qu'il faisait ces sortes d'expéditions, et le bruit de sa valeur se répandait de toutes parts. | 7 But specially took he advantage of the night for such privy attempts, insomuch that the fruit of his holiness was spread every where. |
| 8 Alors Philippe voyant que cet homme grandissait peu à peu, et que ses entreprises réussissaient presque toujours, écrivit à Ptolémée, qui commandait dans la Cœlésyrie et dans la Phénicie, d'apporter du secours aux affaires du roi. | 8 So when Philip saw that this man increased by little and little, and that things prospered with him still more and more, he wrote unto Ptolemeus, the governor of Celosyria and Phenice, to yield more aid to the king's affairs. |
| 9 Ptolémée lui envoya promptement Nicanor, fils de Patrocle, l'un des plus grands de la cour, à qui il ne donna pas moins de vingt mille hommes armés, de diverses nations, afin qu'il exterminât toute la race des Juifs ; et il lui adjoignit Gorgias, grand capitaine (homme belliqueux) et très expérimenté dans les choses de la guerre. | 9 Then forthwith choosing Nicanor the son of Patroclus, one of his special friends, he sent him with no fewer than twenty thousand of all nations under him, to root out the whole generation of the Jews; and with him he joined also Gorgias a captain, who in matters of war had great experience. |
| 10 Nicanor résolut de fournir au roi, par la vente des captifs juifs, le tribut de deux mille talents qui devait être payé aux Romains ; | 10 So Nicanor undertook to make so much money of the captive Jews, as should defray the tribute of two thousand talents, which the king was to pay to the Romans. |
| 11 et il envoya aussitôt vers les villes maritimes, pour inviter à acheter des esclaves juifs, promettant de donner quatre-vingt-dix esclaves pour un talent, sans penser à la vengeance qui devait l'atteindre de la part du Tout-Puissant. | 11 Wherefore immediately he sent to the cities upon the sea coast, proclaiming a sale of the captive Jews, and promising that they should have fourscore and ten bodies for one talent, not expecting the vengeance that was to follow upon him from the Almighty God. |
| 12 (Mais) Dès que Judas eut appris l'arrivée de Nicanor, il en avertit les Juifs qui étaient avec lui. | 12 Now when word was brought unto Judas of Nicanor's coming, and he had imparted unto those that were with him that the army was at hand, |
| 13 Quelques-uns d'entre eux, effrayés et n'ayant pas confiance en la justice de Dieu, prirent la fuite ; | 13 They that were fearful, and distrusted the justice of God, fled, and conveyed themselves away. |
| 14 les autres vendaient ce qui leur était resté, et en même temps ils conjuraient le Seigneur de les délivrer de l'impie Nicanor, qui, avant même de s'être approché d'eux, les avait vendus, | 14 Others sold all that they had left, and withal besought the Lord to deliver them, sold by the wicked Nicanor before they met together: |
| 15 et s'il ne le faisait pas pour eux, qu'il le fît du moins à cause de l'alliance conclue avec leurs pères, et parce que son nom saint et magnifique (glorieux) avait été invoqué sur eux. | 15 And if not for their own sakes, yet for the covenants he had made with their fathers, and for his holy and glorious name's sake, by which they were called. |
| 16 (Or) Machabée, ayant rassemblé les sept mille hommes qui étaient avec lui, les conjurait de ne pas se réconcilier avec leurs ennemis et de ne pas craindre cette multitude d'adversaires qui venaient injustement contre eux, mais de (les) combattre avec courage, | 16 So Maccabeus called his men together unto the number of six thousand, and exhorted them not to be stricken with terror of the enemy, nor to fear the great multitude of the heathen, who came wrongly against them; but to fight manfully, |
| 17 ayant devant les yeux la profanation indigne dont ils avaient déshonoré le lieu saint, et aussi les insultes et les outrages faits à la ville, et encore la violation des institutions des anciens. | 17 And to set before their eyes the injury that they had unjustly done to the holy place, and the cruel handling of the city, whereof they made a mockery, and also the taking away of the government of their forefathers: |
| 18 Car pour eux, dit-il, ils se confient dans leurs armes et dans leur audace ; mais nous, nous mettons notre confiance dans le Seigneur tout-puissant, qui peut détruire par un clin d'œil (d'un signe) et ceux qui s'avancent contre nous, et le monde entier. | 18 For they, said he, trust in their weapons and boldness; but our confidence is in the Almighty who at a beck can cast down both them that come against us, and also all the world. |
| 19 Il les fit souvenir aussi des secours de Dieu qui avaient été donnés à leurs pères, et des cent quatre-vingt cinq mille hommes qui avaient péri au temps de Sennachérib ; | 19 Moreover, he recounted unto them what helps their forefathers had found, and how they were delivered, when under Sennacherib an hundred fourscore and five thousand perished. |
| 20 et de la bataille qu'ils avaient livrée aux Galates en Babylonie, dans laquelle, lorsqu'on en vint aux mains, les Macédoniens, leurs alliés, ayant chancelé, eux seuls, au nombre de six mille en tout, avaient tué cent vingt mille hommes, à cause du secours qu'ils avaient reçu du ciel ; et ils avaient obtenu pour cela de grandes faveurs. | 20 And he told them of the battle that they had in Babylon with the Galatians, how they came but eight thousand in all to the business, with four thousand Macedonians, and that the Macedonians being perplexed, the eight thousand destroyed an hundred and twenty thousand because of the help that they had from heaven, and so received a great booty. |
| 21 Ces paroles les remplirent de courage, et ils furent près à mourir pour leurs lois et leur patrie. | 21 Thus when he had made them bold with these words, and ready to die for the law and the country, he divided his army into four parts; |
| 22 Alors il établit ses frères, Simon, Joseph et Jonathas, chefs de chaque division, chacun d'eux ayant sous lui quinze cents hommes. | 22 And joined with himself his own brethren, leaders of each band, to wit Simon, and Joseph, and Jonathan, giving each one fifteen hundred men. |
| 23 Puis, après que le livre saint leur eût été lu par Esdras, et que l'assurance du secours de Dieu leur eût été donnée, le général lui-même, (il se plaça lui-même comme chef) au premier rang, (et) engagea le combat avec Nicanor. | 23 Also he appointed Eleazar to read the holy book: and when he had given them this watchword, The help of God; himself leading the first band, |
| 24 Et le Tout-Puissant s'étant fait leur auxiliaire, ils tuèrent plus de neuf mille hommes, et ils contraignirent la plus grande partie de l'armée de Nicanor, affaiblie par les blessures, de prendre la fuite. | 24 And by the help of the Almighty they slew above nine thousand of their enemies, and wounded and maimed the most part of Nicanor's host, and so put all to flight; |
| 25 Ils prirent aussi l'argent de ceux qui étaient venus pour les acheter, et ils les poursuivirent au loin (en tous lieux) ; | 25 And took their money that came to buy them, and pursued them far: but lacking time they returned: |
| 26 mais ils revinrent, pressés par l'heure, car c'était la veille du sabbat ; ce qui fut cause qu'ils ne continuèrent pas de les poursuivre. | 26 For it was the day before the sabbath, and therefore they would no longer pursue them. |
| 27 Ayant ensuite ramassé leurs armes et leurs dépouilles, ils célébrèrent le sabbat, bénissant le Seigneur, qui les avait délivrés en ce jour-là, et qui avait répandu sur eux les premières gouttes de sa miséricorde. | 27 So when they had gathered their armour together, and spoiled their enemies, they occupied themselves about the sabbath, yielding exceeding praise and thanks to the Lord, who had preserved them unto that day, which was the beginning of mercy distilling upon them. |
| 28 Après le sabbat, ils firent part des dépouilles aux infirmes, aux orphelins et aux veuves ; et ils retinrent le reste pour eux et pour les leurs. | 28 And after the sabbath, when they had given part of the spoils to the maimed, and the widows, and orphans, the residue they divided among themselves and their servants. |
| 29 Après cela, tous ensemble ils firent une prière, conjurant le Seigneur miséricordieux de se réconcilier tout à fait avec ses serviteurs. | 29 When this was done, and they had made a common supplication, they besought the merciful Lord to be reconciled with his servants for ever. |
| 30 Ils tuèrent aussi plus de vingt mille hommes de ceux qui combattaient contre eux avec Timothée et Bacchidés ; ils s'emparèrent de forteresses aux murs élevés, et partagèrent, par portions égales, un grand butin entre les malades (infirmes), les orphelins, les veuves et aussi les vieillards. | 30 Moreover of those that were with Timotheus and Bacchides, who fought against them, they slew above twenty thousand, and very easily got high and strong holds, and divided among themselves many spoils more, and made the maimed, orphans, widows, yea, and the aged also, equal in spoils with themselves. |
| 31 Et après avoir ramassé les armes avec soin, ils les placèrent toutes en des lieux convenables ; puis ils portèrent le reste des dépouilles à Jérusalem. | 31 And when they had gathered their armour together, they laid them up all carefully in convenient places, and the remnant of the spoils they brought to Jerusalem. |
| 32 Ils tuèrent aussi Philarque, homme pervers (criminel), qui était avec Timothée, et qui avait fait beaucoup de mal (maux) aux Juifs. | 32 They slew also Philarches, that wicked person, who was with Timotheus, and had annoyed the Jews many ways. |
| 33 Tandis qu'ils fêtaient cette victoire à Jérusalem, ils brûlèrent celui qui avait mis le feu aux portes sacrées, à savoir Callisthène, qui s'était réfugié dans une maison, lui rendant le juste salaire de ses impiétés. | 33 Furthermore at such time as they kept the feast for the victory in their country they burnt Callisthenes, that had set fire upon the holy gates, who had fled into a little house; and so he received a reward meet for his wickedness. |
| 34 Mais le très infâme Nicanor, qui avait amené mille marchands pour leur vendre les Juifs, | 34 As for that most ungracious Nicanor, who had brought a thousand merchants to buy the Jews, |
| 35 humilié, grâce au secours du Seigneur, par ceux qu'il avait regardés comme des gens de néant, s'enfuit par la Méditerranée, après s'être dépouillé de ses vêtements de gloire, et il arriva seul à Antioche, ayant trouvé le comble du malheur dans la perte de son armée. | 35 He was through the help of the Lord brought down by them, of whom he made least account; and putting off his glorious apparel, and discharging his company, he came like a fugitive servant through the midland unto Antioch having very great dishonour, for that his host was destroyed. |
| 36 Et celui qui avait promis de payer le tribut aux Romains au moyen des captifs pris à Jérusalem publiait maintenant que les Juifs avaient Dieu pour protecteur, et qu'ils étaient invulnérables grâce à lui, parce qu'ils observaient les lois établies par lui. | 36 Thus he, that took upon him to make good to the Romans their tribute by means of captives in Jerusalem, told abroad, that the Jews had God to fight for them, and therefore they could not be hurt, because they followed the laws that he gave them. |
