| 1 Lorsque le Seigneur voulut enlever Elie au ciel au moyen d'un tourbillon, il arriva qu'Elie et Elisée venaient de Galgala. | 1 And it came to pass, when the LORD would take up Elijah into heaven by a whirlwind, that Elijah went with Elisha from Gilgal. |
| 2 Et Elie dit à Elisée : Reste ici, car le Seigneur m'a envoyé jusqu'à Béthel. Elisée lui répondit : Vive le Seigneur (vit), et vive votre âme (vit), je ne vous abandonnerai pas. Ils allèrent donc à Béthel, | 2 And Elijah said unto Elisha, Tarry here, I pray thee; for the LORD hath sent me to Bethel. And Elisha said unto him, As the LORD liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee. So they went down to Bethel. |
| 3 et les fils (enfants) des prophètes qui étaient à Béthel vinrent auprès d'Elisée et lui dirent : Sais-tu que le Seigneur t'enlèvera aujourd'hui ton maître ? Elisée leur répondit : Je le sais aussi ; taisez-vous. | 3 And the sons of the prophets that were at Bethel came forth to Elisha, and said unto him, Knowest thou that the LORD will take away thy master from thy head to day? And he said, Yea, I know it; hold ye your peace. |
| 4 Elie dit encore à Elisée : Reste ici, car le Seigneur m'a envoyé à Jéricho. Elisée lui répondit : Vive le Seigneur (vit), et vive votre âme (vit), je ne vous abandonnerai pas. Et lorsqu'ils furent arrivés à Jéricho, | 4 And Elijah said unto him, Elisha, tarry here, I pray thee; for the LORD hath sent me to Jericho. And he said, As the LORD liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee. So they came to Jericho. |
| 5 les fils des prophètes qui étaient à Jéricho s'approchèrent d'Elisée et lui dirent : Sais-tu que le Seigneur t'enlèvera aujourd'hui ton maître ? Il leur répondit : Je le sais aussi ; taisez-vous. | 5 And the sons of the prophets that were at Jericho came to Elisha, and said unto him, Knowest thou that the LORD will take away thy master from thy head to day? And he answered, Yea, I know it; hold ye your peace. |
| 6 Elie dit encore à Elisée : Reste ici, car le Seigneur m'a envoyé jusqu'au Jourdain. Elisée lui répondit : Vive le Seigneur (vit), et vive votre âme (vit), je ne vous abandonnerai pas. Ils allèrent donc tous deux ensemble, | 6 And Elijah said unto him, Tarry, I pray thee, here; for the LORD hath sent me to Jordan. And he said, As the LORD liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee. And they two went on. |
| 7 et cinquante des fils des prophètes les suivirent et s'arrêtèrent à distance, vis-à vis. Et ils s'arrêtèrent tous deux au bord du Jourdain. | 7 And fifty men of the sons of the prophets went, and stood to view afar off: and they two stood by Jordan. |
| 8 Alors Elie prit son manteau, le roula et en frappa les eaux, qui se divisèrent des deux côtés ; et ils passèrent tous deux à pied sec. | 8 And Elijah took his mantle, and wrapped it together, and smote the waters, and they were divided hither and thither, so that they two went over on dry ground. |
| 9 Lorsqu'ils furent passés, Elie dit à Elisée : Demande-moi ce que tu veux que je fasse pour toi, avant que je sois enlevé d'avec toi. Elisée lui répondit : Je vous prie, que votre double esprit repose sur moi. | 9 And it came to pass, when they were gone over, that Elijah said unto Elisha, Ask what I shall do for thee, before I be taken away from thee. And Elisha said, I pray thee, let a double portion of thy spirit be upon me. |
| 10 Elie lui dit : Tu me demandes une chose difficile. Néanmoins, si tu me vois lorsque je serai enlevé d'auprès de toi, tu auras ce que tu as demandé ; mais si tu ne me vois pas, tu ne l'auras pas. | 10 And he said, Thou hast asked a hard thing: nevertheless, if thou see me when I am taken from thee, it shall be so unto thee; but if not, it shall not be so. |
| 11 Tandis qu'ils continuaient leur chemin, et qu'ils marchaient en s'entretenant, un char de feu et des chevaux de feu les séparèrent tout à coup l'un de l'autre, et Elie monta au ciel au milieu d'un tourbillon (dans le). | 11 And it came to pass, as they still went on, and talked, that, behold, there appeared a chariot of fire, and horses of fire, and parted them both asunder; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven. |
| 12 Et Elisée le voyait, et criait : Mon père, mon père, le char d'Israël et son conducteur. Ensuite il ne le vit plus. Et prenant ses vêtements, il les déchira en deux parts. | 12 And Elisha saw it, and he cried, My father, my father, the chariot of Israel, and the horsemen thereof. And he saw him no more: and he took hold of his own clothes, and rent them in two pieces. |
| 13 Puis il leva de terre le manteau qu'Elie avait laissé tomber pour lui. Et Elisée, s'en revenant, s'arrêta sur le bord du Jourdain, | 13 He took up also the mantle of Elijah that fell from him, and went back, and stood by the bank of Jordan; |
| 14 et prit le manteau qu'Elie avait laissé tomber pour lui ; il en frappa les eaux, et elles ne furent pas divisées. Alors Elisée dit : Où est maintenant le Dieu d'Elie (maintenant) ? Et il frappa les eaux, et elles se partagèrent d'un côté et d'un autre, et il passa. | 14 And he took the mantle of Elijah that fell from him, and smote the waters, and said, Where is the LORD God of Elijah? and when he also had smitten the waters, they parted hither and thither: and Elisha went over. |
| 15 Les fils des prophètes qui étaient à Jéricho, vis-à-vis, ayant vu cela, s'écrièrent : L'esprit d'Elie s'est reposé sur Elisée ; et, venant au-devant de lui, (ils) se prosternèrent contre terre devant lui, | 15 And when the sons of the prophets which were to view at Jericho saw him, they said, The spirit of Elijah doth rest on Elisha. And they came to meet him, and bowed themselves to the ground before him. |
| 16 et (ils) dirent : Il y a parmi tes serviteurs cinquante hommes robustes, qui peuvent aller chercher ton maître ; car peut-être l'esprit du Seigneur l'aura-t-il jeté sur une montagne où dans une vallée. Elisée leur répondit : Ne les envoyez pas. | 16 And they said unto him, Behold now, there be with thy servants fifty strong men; let them go, we pray thee, and seek thy master: lest peradventure the Spirit of the LORD hath taken him up, and cast him upon some mountain, or into some valley. And he said, Ye shall not send. |
| 17 Mais ils le contraignirent par leurs instances à consentir, et il leur dit : Envoyez-les. Ils envoyèrent donc cinquante hommes, qui, l'ayant cherché pendant trois jours, ne le trouvèrent pas. | 17 And when they urged him till he was ashamed, he said, Send. They sent therefore fifty men; and they sought three days, but found him not. |
| 18 Ils revinrent ensuite auprès d'Elisée, qui demeurait à Jéricho ; et il leur dit : Ne vous avais-je pas dit : Ne les envoyez pas ? | 18 And when they came again to him, (for he tarried at Jericho,) he said unto them, Did I not say unto you, Go not? |
| 19 Les habitants de la ville dirent aussi à Elisée : Seigneur, le séjour de cette ville est excellent, comme vous le voyez vous-même ; mais les eaux sont très mauvaises, et la terre est stérile. | 19 And the men of the city said unto Elisha, Behold, I pray thee, the situation of this city is pleasant, as my lord seeth: but the water is naught, and the ground barren. |
| 20 Elisée leur répondit : Apportez-moi un vase neuf, et mettez-y du sel. Lorsqu'ils le lui eurent apporté, | 20 And he said, Bring me a new cruse, and put salt therein. And they brought it to him. |
| 21 il alla à la fontaine, et ayant jeté le sel dans l'eau, il dit : Voici ce que dit le Seigneur : J'ai rendu ces eaux saines, et elles ne causeront plus à l'avenir ni mort ni stérilité. | 21 And he went forth unto the spring of the waters, and cast the salt in there, and said, Thus saith the LORD, I have healed these waters; there shall not be from thence any more death or barren land. |
| 22 Ces eaux devinrent donc saines, comme elles le sont encore aujourd'hui, selon la parole qu'Elisée prononça. | 22 So the waters were healed unto this day, according to the saying of Elisha which he spake. |
| 23 (Or) Elisée vint de là à Béthel ; et tandis qu'il montait par le chemin, de petits enfants étant sortis de la ville, se moquaient de lui en disant : Monte, chauve ; monte, chauve. | 23 And he went up from thence unto Bethel: and as he was going up by the way, there came forth little children out of the city, and mocked him, and said unto him, Go up, thou bald head; go up, thou bald head. |
| 24 Elisée, ayant levé les yeux, les vit et les maudit au nom du Seigneur. Aussitôt (Et) deux ours sortirent de la forêt et déchirèrent quarante-deux de ces enfants. | 24 And he turned back, and looked on them, and cursed them in the name of the LORD. And there came forth two she bears out of the wood, and tare forty and two children of them. |
| 25 Elisée alla ensuite sur le mont Carmel d'où il revint à Samarie. | 25 And he went from thence to mount Carmel, and from thence he returned to Samaria. |
