| 1 Alors Roboam vint à Sichem, car tout Israël s'y était assemblé pour l'établir roi. | 1 And Rehoboam went to Shechem: for all Israel were come to Shechem to make him king. |
| 2 Mais Jéroboam fils de Nabath, qui était encore en Egypte, où il s'était réfugié loin du roi Salomon, ayant appris sa mort, revint de l'Egypte. | 2 And it came to pass, when Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who was yet in Egypt, heard of it, (for he was fled from the presence of king Solomon, and Jeroboam dwelt in Egypt;) |
| 3 Et on envoya vers lui et on le rappela. Jéroboam vint donc avec tout le peuple d'Israël trouver Roboam, et ils lui dirent : | 3 That they sent and called him. And Jeroboam and all the congregation of Israel came, and spake unto Rehoboam, saying, |
| 4 Votre père nous a imposé un joug très dur ; diminuez donc maintenant un peu le commandement très dur de votre père, et le joug très pesant qu'il nous a imposé, et nous vous servirons. | 4 Thy father made our yoke grievous: now therefore make thou the grievous service of thy father, and his heavy yoke which he put upon us, lighter, and we will serve thee. |
| 5 Roboam leur répondit : Allez, et dans trois jours revenez me trouver. Le peuple s'étant retiré, | 5 And he said unto them, Depart yet for three days, then come again to me. And the people departed. |
| 6 le roi Roboam tint conseil avec les vieillards qui assistaient Salomon son père lorsqu'il vivait encore, et il leur dit : Quelle réponse me conseillez-vous de faire à ce peuple ? | 6 And king Rehoboam consulted with the old men, that stood before Solomon his father while he yet lived, and said, How do ye advise that I may answer this people? |
| 7 Ils lui répondirent : Si vous obéissez maintenant à ce peuple, si vous vous soumettez à eux, et si vous vous rendez à leur demande en leur parlant avec douceur, ils s'attacheront pour toujours à votre service. | 7 And they spake unto him, saying, If thou wilt be a servant unto this people this day, and wilt serve them, and answer them, and speak good words to them, then they will be thy servants for ever. |
| 8 Mais Roboam, n'approuvant pas le conseil que les vieillards lui avaient donné, voulut consulter les jeunes gens qui avaient été nourris avec lui, et qui l'assistaient ; | 8 But he forsook the counsel of the old men, which they had given him, and consulted with the young men that were grown up with him, and which stood before him: |
| 9 et il leur dit : Quelle réponse me conseillez-vous de faire à ce peuple qui est venu me dire : Adoucissez (un peu) le joug que votre père a imposé sur nous ? | 9 And he said unto them, What counsel give ye that we may answer this people, who have spoken to me, saying, Make the yoke which thy father did put upon us lighter? |
| 10 Ces jeunes gens, qui avaient été nourris avec lui, lui répondirent : Voici la réponse que vous ferez à ce peuple qui est venu vous dire : Votre père a rendu notre joug très pesant ; vous, allégez-le. Vous lui parlerez en ces termes : Le plus petit de mes doigts est plus gros que le dos de mon père. | 10 And the young men that were grown up with him spake unto him, saying, Thus shalt thou speak unto this people that spake unto thee, saying, Thy father made our yoke heavy, but make thou it lighter unto us; thus shalt thou say unto them, My little finger shall be thicker than my father's loins. |
| 11 Si donc mon père vous a imposé un joug pesant, moi je le rendrai encore plus lourd. Mon père vous a battus avec des fouets (verges), et moi je vous châtierai avec des verges de fer (scorpions, note). | 11 And now whereas my father did lade you with a heavy yoke, I will add to your yoke: my father hath chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions. |
| 12 Jéroboam vint donc avec tout le peuple trouver Roboam le troisième jour, selon la parole que le roi leur avait dite : Revenez me trouver dans trois jours. | 12 So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam the third day, as the king had appointed, saying, Come to me again the third day. |
| 13 Et le roi répondit durement au peuple, et abandonnant le conseil que les vieillards lui avaient donné, | 13 And the king answered the people roughly, and forsook the old men's counsel that they gave him; |
| 14 il leur parla selon le conseil des jeunes gens, et il leur dit : Mon père vous a imposé un joug pesant ; mais moi je le rendrai encore plus lourd. Mon père vous a châtiés avec des fouets (verges) ; mais moi je vous châtierai avec des verges de fer (scorpions). | 14 And spake to them after the counsel of the young men, saying, My father made your yoke heavy, and I will add to your yoke: my father also chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions. |
| 15 Et le roi ne se rendit point à la volonté du peuple, parce que le Seigneur s'était détourné de lui dans sa colère ; pour vérifier la parole qu'il avait dite à Jéroboam, fils de Nabath, par Ahias le Silonite. | 15 Wherefore the king hearkened not unto the people; for the cause was from the LORD, that he might perform his saying, which the LORD spake by Ahijah the Shilonite unto Jeroboam the son of Nebat. |
| 16 Le peuple, voyant donc que le roi n'avait point voulu les écouter, lui répondit : Quelle part avons-nous avec David ? Quel est notre héritage avec le fils d'Isaï ? Israël, retire-toi dans tes tentes (tabernacles) ; et vous, David, pourvoyez maintenant à (voyez, note) votre maison. Israël se retira donc dans ses tentes. | 16 So when all Israel saw that the king hearkened not unto them, the people answered the king, saying, What portion have we in David? neither have we inheritance in the son of Jesse: to your tents, O Israel: now see to thine own house, David. So Israel departed unto their tents. |
| 17 Mais Roboam régna sur tous les fils d'Israël qui demeuraient dans les villes de Juda. | 17 But as for the children of Israel which dwelt in the cities of Judah, Rehoboam reigned over them. |
| 18 Le roi Roboam envoya ensuite Aduram, qui avait la surintendance des tribus ; mais tout le peuple le lapida, et il mourut. Le roi Roboam monta aussitôt sur son char et s'enfuit à Jérusalem. | 18 Then king Rehoboam sent Adoram, who was over the tribute; and all Israel stoned him with stones, that he died. Therefore king Rehoboam made speed to get him up to his chariot, to flee to Jerusalem. |
| 19 Et Israël se sépara de la maison de David, jusqu'à ce jour. | 19 So Israel rebelled against the house of David unto this day. |
| 20 Alors tout Israël ayant appris que Jéroboam était revenu, ils l'envoyèrent chercher, et le firent venir dans une assemblée où ils l'établirent roi sur tout Israël ; et nul ne suivit la maison de David que la seule tribu de Juda. | 20 And it came to pass, when all Israel heard that Jeroboam was come again, that they sent and called him unto the congregation, and made him king over all Israel: there was none that followed the house of David, but the tribe of Judah only. |
| 21 Roboam, lorsqu'il fut à Jérusalem, assembla toute la tribu de Juda et la tribu de Benjamin, et vint avec cent quatre-vingt mille hommes de guerre choisis, pour combattre contre la maison d'Israël, et pour réduire le royaume sous l'obéissance de Roboam, fils de Salomon. | 21 And when Rehoboam was come to Jerusalem, he assembled all the house of Judah, with the tribe of Benjamin, an hundred and fourscore thousand chosen men, which were warriors, to fight against the house of Israel, to bring the kingdom again to Rehoboam the son of Solomon. |
| 22 Alors le Seigneur adressa la parole à Séméias, homme de Dieu, et lui dit : | 22 But the word of God came unto Shemaiah the man of God, saying, |
| 23 Parle à Roboam, fils de Salomon, roi de Juda, à toute la maison de Juda et de Benjamin, et à tout le reste du peuple, et dis-leur : | 23 Speak unto Rehoboam, the son of Solomon, king of Judah, and unto all the house of Judah and Benjamin, and to the remnant of the people, saying, |
| 24 Voici ce que dit le Seigneur : Vous ne monterez pas, et vous ne ferez pas la guerre aux fils (enfants) d'Israël, vos frères. Que chacun retourne en sa maison ; car c'est moi qui ai fait ces choses. Ils écoutèrent la parole du Seigneur, et ils s'en retournèrent selon que le Seigneur le leur avait commandé. | 24 Thus saith the LORD, Ye shall not go up, nor fight against your brethren the children of Israel: return every man to his house; for this thing is from me. They hearkened therefore to the word of the LORD, and returned to depart, according to the word of the LORD. |
| 25 Or Jéroboam rebâtit Sichem sur la montagne d'Ephraïm, et il y demeura ; et étant sorti de là, il bâtit Phanuel. | 25 Then Jeroboam built Shechem in mount Ephraim, and dwelt therein; and went out from thence, and built Penuel. |
| 26 Mais Jéroboam dit en lui-même : Le royaume retournera bientôt à la maison de David, | 26 And Jeroboam said in his heart, Now shall the kingdom return to the house of David: |
| 27 si ce peuple monte à Jérusalem pour y offrir des sacrifices dans la maison du Seigneur ; et le cœur de ce peuple se tournera aussitôt vers Roboam, roi de Juda, son seigneur, et ils me tueront et retourneront à lui. | 27 If this people go up to do sacrifice in the house of the LORD at Jerusalem, then shall the heart of this people turn again unto their lord, even unto Rehoboam king of Judah, and they shall kill me, and go again to Rehoboam king of Judah. |
| 28 Et après y avoir bien pensé, il fit deux veaux d'or, et dit au peuple : N'allez plus désormais à Jérusalem. Israël, voici tes dieux qui t'ont (re)tiré de l'Egypte. | 28 Whereupon the king took counsel, and made two calves of gold, and said unto them, It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem: behold thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt. |
| 29 Il les mit, l'un à Béthel, et l'autre à Dan ; | 29 And he set the one in Bethel, and the other put he in Dan. |
| 30 ce qui devint un sujet de péché, car le peuple allait jusqu'à Dan pour y adorer le veau. | 30 And this thing became a sin: for the people went to worship before the one, even unto Dan. |
| 31 Il fit aussi des temples sur les hauts lieux, et il établit pour prêtres les derniers du peuple, qui n'étaient point fils (d'entre les enfants) de Lévi. | 31 And he made an house of high places, and made priests of the lowest of the people, which were not of the sons of Levi. |
| 32 Il établit (ordonna) aussi une fête au huitième mois, le quinzième jour du mois, à la ressemblance de celle qui se célébrait alors en Juda ; et il monta lui-même à l'autel. Il fit la même chose à Béthel, sacrifiant aux veaux qu'il avait faits, et il établit dans Béthel des prêtres pour les hauts lieux qu'il avait bâtis. | 32 And Jeroboam ordained a feast in the eighth month, on the fifteenth day of the month, like unto the feast that is in Judah, and he offered upon the altar. So did he in Bethel, sacrificing unto the calves that he had made: and he placed in Bethel the priests of the high places which he had made. |
| 33 Il monta à l'autel qu'il avait bâti à Béthel, le quinzième jour du huitième mois, jour qu'il avait fixé de son propre gré, et il fit faire une fête solennelle aux enfants d'Israël, et monta à l'autel pour y offrir de l'encens. | 33 So he offered upon the altar which he had made in Bethel the fifteenth day of the eighth month, even in the month which he had devised of his own heart; and ordained a feast unto the children of Israel: and he offered upon the altar, and burnt incense. |
