| 1 Le Seigneur envoya donc Nathan vers David. Et Nathan, étant venu le trouver, lui dit : Il y avait deux hommes dans une ville ; l'un riche, et l'autre pauvre. | 1 Then the Lord sent Nathan to David. And when he had come to him, he said to him: “Two men were in one city: one wealthy, and the other poor. |
| 2 Le riche avait un (très) grand nombre de brebis et de bœufs ; | 2 The wealthy man had very many sheep and oxen. |
| 3 mais le pauvre n'avait rien du tout qu'une petite brebis, qu'il avait achetée et nourrie, qui avait grandi parmi ses enfants, en mangeant de son pain, buvant de sa coupe, et dormant dans (sur) son sein ; et elle était pour lui comme une fille. | 3 But the poor man had nothing at all, except one little sheep, which he had bought and nourished. And she had grown up before him, together with his children, eating from his bread, and drinking from his cup, and sleeping in his bosom. And she was like a daughter to him. |
| 4 (Mais) Un étranger étant venu voir le riche, celui-ci ne voulut pas toucher à ses brebis ni à ses bœufs pour lui faire un festin ; mais il prit la brebis de ce pauvre homme, et la donna à son hôte. | 4 But when a certain traveler had come to the wealthy man, neglecting to take from his own sheep and oxen, so that he might present a feast for that traveler, who had come to him, he took the sheep of the poor man, and he prepared a meal for the man who had come to him.” |
| 5 (Or) David entra dans une grande indignation contre cet homme, et il dit à Nathan : Vive le Seigneur (vit) ! celui qui a fait cette action est digne (un fils) de mort. | 5 Then David’s indignation was enraged exceedingly against that man, and he said to Nathan: “As the Lord lives, the man who has done this is a son of death. |
| 6 Il rendra la brebis au quadruple, pour avoir agi de la sorte, et pour n'avoir pas épargné ce pauvre. | 6 He shall restore the sheep fourfold, because he did this word, and he did not take pity.” |
| 7 Alors Nathan dit à David : Cet homme, c'est vous-même. Voici ce que dit le Seigneur Dieu d'Israël : Je t'ai sacré roi sur Israël, et t'ai délivré de la main de Saül. | 7 But Nathan said to David: “You are that man. Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: ‘I anointed you as king over Israel, and I rescued you from the hand of Saul. |
| 8 J'ai mis entre tes mains la maison et les femmes de ton seigneur, et je t'ai rendu (aussi) maître de toute la maison d'Israël et de Juda. Que si cela paraît peu de chose, je suis prêt à faire (de) beaucoup plus (grandes) encore. | 8 And I gave the house of your lord to you, and the wives of your lord into your bosom. And I gave the house of Israel and of Judah to you. And as if these things were small, I shall add much greater things to you. |
| 9 Pourquoi donc as-tu méprisé ma parole, jusqu'à commettre le mal devant mes yeux ? Tu as frappé du glaive Urie l'Héthéen ; tu lui as enlevé sa femme, et l'as prise pour toi, et tu l'as tué par l'épée des enfants d'Ammon. | 9 Therefore, why have you despised the word of the Lord, so that you did evil in my sight? You have struck down Uriah the Hittite with the sword. And you have taken his wife as a wife for yourself. And you have put him to death with the sword of the sons of Ammon. |
| 10 C'est pourquoi l'épée ne sortira jamais de ta maison ; parce que tu m'as méprisé, et que tu as pris pour toi la femme d'Urie l'Héthéen. | 10 For this reason, the sword shall not withdraw from your house, even perpetually, because you have despised me, and you have taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite, so that she may be your wife.’ |
| 11 Voici donc ce que dit le Seigneur : Je vais te susciter des maux qui naîtront de ta propre maison. Je prendrai tes femmes sous tes yeux, et je les donnerai à celui qui t'est le plus proche, et il dormira avec elles aux yeux de ce soleil. | 11 And so, thus says the Lord: ‘Behold, I will raise up over you an evil from your own house. And I will take your wives away before your eyes, and I will give them to your neighbor. And he will sleep with your wives in the sight of this sun. |
| 12 Car toi, tu as fait cette action en secret ; mais moi, je la ferai à la vue de tout Israël, et à la vue du soleil. | 12 For you acted secretly. But I will do this word in the sight of all of Israel, and in the sight of the sun.’ ” |
| 13 Alors David dit à Nathan : J'ai péché contre le Seigneur. Et Nathan lui répondit : Le Seigneur aussi a transféré votre péché, et vous ne mourrez point. | 13 And David said to Nathan, “I have sinned against the Lord.” And Nathan said to David: “The Lord has also taken away your sin. You shall not die. |
| 14 Néanmoins, parce que vous avez été cause que les ennemis du Seigneur ont blasphémé contre lui, le fils qui vous est né mourra. | 14 Yet truly, because you have given occasion to the enemies of the Lord to blaspheme, because of this word, the son who was born to you: dying he shall die.” |
| 15 Nathan retourna ensuite à sa maison. Et le Seigneur frappa l'enfant que la femme d'Urie avait eu de David, et son état (il) fut désespéré. | 15 And Nathan returned to his own house. And the Lord struck the little one, whom the wife of Uriah had borne to David, and he was despaired of. |
| 16 Et David pria le Seigneur pour l'enfant ; il jeûna, et, s'étant retiré, il demeura couché à terre. | 16 And David begged the Lord on behalf of the little one. And David fasted strictly, and entering alone, he lay upon the ground. |
| 17 (Mais) Les anciens de la maison vinrent le trouver, et insistèrent pour le faire lever de terre ; mais il refusa, et il ne mangea point avec eux. | 17 Then the elders of his house came, urging him to rise up from the ground. And he was not willing, nor would he eat a meal with them. |
| 18 (Or) Le septième jour l'enfant mourut, et les serviteurs de David n'osaient lui dire qu'il était mort ; car ils s'entredisaient : Lorsque l'enfant vivait encore, et que nous lui parlions, il ne voulait pas nous écouter ; combien s'affligera-t-il davantage encore, si nous lui disons qu'il est mort ? | 18 Then, on the seventh day, it happened that the infant died. And the servants of David were afraid to report to him that the little one had died. For they said: “Behold, when the child was still alive, we were speaking to him, but he would not listen to our voice. How much more will he afflict himself, if we tell him that the boy is dead?” |
| 19 David voyant que ses officiers (serviteurs) parlaient tout bas entre eux, comprit que l'enfant était mort ; et il leur dit : L'enfant est-il mort ? Et ils répondirent : Il est mort. | 19 But when David had seen his servants whispering, he realized that the infant had died. And he said to his servants, “Is the child dead?” And they responded to him, “He is dead.” |
| 20 Aussitôt il se leva de terre, se lava, s'oignit, changea de vêtements, entra dans la maison du Seigneur, et l'adora. Il revint ensuite dans sa maison, demanda qu'on lui servît à manger, et il prit de la nourriture. | 20 Therefore, David rose up from the ground. And he washed and anointed himself. And when he had changed his clothing, he entered the house of the Lord, and he worshiped. Then he went to his own house, and he asked them to place bread before him, and he ate. |
| 21 Alors ses officiers (serviteurs) lui dirent : D'où vient cette conduite ? Vous jeûniez et vous pleuriez pour l'enfant lorsqu'il vivait encore ; et après qu'il est mort, vous vous êtes levé et vous avez mangé. | 21 But his servants said to him: “What is this word that you have done? You fasted and were weeping, on behalf of the infant, while he was still alive. But when the boy was dead, you arose and ate bread.” |
| 22 David leur répondit : J'ai jeûné et j'ai pleuré pour l'enfant tant qu'il a vécu, parce que je disais : Qui sait si le Seigneur ne me le donnera point, et s'il ne lui sauvera pas la vie ? | 22 And he said: “While he was yet alive, I fasted and wept on behalf of the infant. For I said: Who knows if the Lord may perhaps give him to me, and let the infant live? |
| 23 Mais maintenant qu'il est mort, pourquoi jeûnerais-je ? Est-ce que je puis encore le faire revivre ? C'est moi plutôt qui irai à lui ; et il ne reviendra jamais à moi. | 23 But now that he is dead, why should I fast? Would I be able to bring him back anymore? Instead, I will go to him. Yet truly, he will not return to me.” |
| 24 David ensuite consola sa femme Bethsabée ; il dormit avec elle, et elle eut un fils, qu'il appela Salomon. Et le Seigneur aima cet enfant. | 24 And David consoled his wife Bathsheba. And entering to her, he slept with her. And she bore a son, and he called his name Solomon, and the Lord loved him. |
| 25 Et ayant envoyé le prophète Nathan, il donna à l'enfant le nom d'Aimable au Seigneur, parce que le Seigneur l'aimait. | 25 And he sent, by the hand of Nathan the prophet, and he called his name, Beloved of the Lord, because the Lord loved him. |
| 26 Joab luttait donc contre Rabbath-Ammon, et, étant sur le point de prendre cette (il attaquait vivement la) ville royale, | 26 And then Joab fought against Rabbah of the sons of Ammon, and he fought outside the royal city. |
| 27 il envoya des courriers à David, avec ordre de lui dire : J'ai lutté contre Rabbath, et la ville des eaux va être prise. | 27 And Joab sent messengers to David, saying: “I have struggled against Rabbah, and so the City of Waters will soon be seized. |
| 28 Rassemblez donc maintenant le reste du peuple, et venez assiéger la ville, et prenez-la, de peur que, si c'est moi qui la détruis, on ne m'attribue l'honneur de cette victoire. | 28 Now therefore, gather the remaining portion of the people together, and besiege the city and take it. Otherwise, when the city will have been laid waste by me, the victory will be ascribed to my name.” |
| 29 David assembla donc tout le peuple, et marcha contre Rabbath ; et après quelques combats il la prit. | 29 And so David gathered together all the people, and he set out against Rabbah. And after he had fought, he seized it. |
| 30 Il ôta de dessus la tête du roi des Ammonites sa couronne, qui pesait un talent d'or et était enrichie de pierres très précieuses ; et elle fut placée sur la tête de David. Il remporta aussi de la ville un fort grand butin. | 30 And he took the crown of their king from his head. The weight of it was a talent of gold, having the most precious gems. And it was placed upon the head of David. Moreover, he carried away the spoils of the city, which were very many. |
| 31 Et ayant fait sortir les habitants, il les coupa avec des scies, fit passer sur eux des traîneaux bardés de fer, les tailla en pièces avec des couteaux, et les jeta dans des fours à (le moule des) briques. C'est ainsi qu'il traita toutes les villes des Ammonites. David revint ensuite à Jérusalem avec toute son armée. | 31 Also, bringing forth its people, he sawed them, and he drove over them with iron wagons, and he divided them with knives, and he dragged them through brick kilns. So he did to all the citizens of the sons of Ammon. And David returned, with the entire army, to Jerusalem. |
