| 2 Et le Pharaon étant irrité contre ces deux officiers (eux), dont l'un commandait à ses échansons et l'autre à ses panetiers, | 2 And Pharaoh was angry with his two officers, the chief butler and the chief baker, |
| 3 les fit mettre dans la prison du général de ses troupes, où Joseph était prisonnier. | 3 and he put them in custody in the house of the captain of the guard, in the prison where Joseph was confined. |
| 4 (Mais) Le gouverneur de la prison les remit entre les mains de Joseph, qui les servait et avait soin d'eux. Quelque temps s'étant passé, pendant lequel ils demeuraient toujours prisonniers, | 4 The captain of the guard charged Joseph with them, and he waited on them; and they continued for some time in custody. |
| 5 ils eurent tous deux, en une même nuit, un songe qui pouvait recevoir une interprétation distincte (se rapportait à eux.). | 5 And one night they both dreamed--the butler and the baker of the king of Egypt, who were confined in the prison--each his own dream, and each dream with its own meaning. |
| 6 Joseph entra le matin auprès d'eux, et les ayant vus tristes, | 6 When Joseph came to them in the morning and saw them, they were troubled. |
| 7 il leur en demanda le sujet, et leur dit : D'où vient que vous avez le visage plus abattu aujourd'hui qu'à l'ordinaire ? | 7 So he asked Pharaoh's officers who were with him in custody in his master's house, "Why are your faces downcast today?" |
| 8 Ils lui répondirent : Nous avons eu un songe, et nous n'avons personne pour nous l'expliquer. Joseph leur dit : N'est-ce pas à Dieu qu'appartient l'interprétation des songes ? Dites-moi ce que vous avez vu. | 8 They said to him, "We have had dreams, and there is no one to interpret them." And Joseph said to them, "Do not interpretations belong to God? Tell them to me, I pray you." |
| 9 Le grand échanson lui rapporta le premier son songe en ces termes : Je voyais devant moi un cep de vigne, | 9 So the chief butler told his dream to Joseph, and said to him, "In my dream there was a vine before me, |
| 10 sur lequel il y avait trois sarments qui poussaient peu à peu, d'abord des boutons, ensuite des fleurs, et à la fin des raisins mûrs ; | 10 and on the vine there were three branches; as soon as it budded, its blossoms shot forth, and the clusters ripened into grapes. |
| 11 et ayant dans la main la coupe du Pharaon, j'ai pris ces grappes de raisins, je les ai pressées dans la coupe que je tenais, et j'en ai donné à boire au roi. | 11 Pharaoh's cup was in my hand; and I took the grapes and pressed them into Pharaoh's cup, and placed the cup in Pharaoh's hand." |
| 12 Joseph lui dit : Voici l'interprétation de ton songe : Les trois sarments de la vigne marquent trois jours, | 12 Then Joseph said to him, "This is its interpretation: the three branches are three days; |
| 13 après lesquels (le) Pharaon se souviendra de tes services ; il te rétablira dans ta première charge, et tu lui présenteras à boire selon que tu avais coutume de le faire auparavant d'après tes fonctions. | 13 within three days Pharaoh will lift up your head and restore you to your office; and you shall place Pharaoh's cup in his hand as formerly, when you were his butler. |
| 14 Seulement souviens-toi de moi quand ce bonheur te sera arrivé, et rends-moi le bon office de supplier le Pharaon qu'il daigne me tirer de la prison où je suis ; | 14 But remember me, when it is well with you, and do me the kindness, I pray you, to make mention of me to Pharaoh, and so get me out of this house. |
| 15 parce que j'ai été enlevé par fraude et par violence du pays des Hébreux, et que l'on m'a renfermé (j'ai été jeté ici dans la fosse) malgré mon innocence. | 15 For I was indeed stolen out of the land of the Hebrews; and here also I have done nothing that they should put me into the dungeon." |
| 16 Le grand panetier, voyant qu'il avait interprété ce songe si sagement, lui dit : J'ai eu aussi un songe. Je portais sur ma tête trois corbeilles de farine, | 16 When the chief baker saw that the interpretation was favorable, he said to Joseph, "I also had a dream: there were three cake baskets on my head, |
| 17 et dans celle qui était au-dessus des autres, il y avait de tous les mets que peut apprêter l'art du pâtissier, et les oiseaux en venaient manger. | 17 and in the uppermost basket there were all sorts of baked food for Pharaoh, but the birds were eating it out of the basket on my head." |
| 18 Joseph lui répondit : Voici l'interprétation de ton songe. Les trois corbeilles signifient qu'il se passera encore trois jours, | 18 And Joseph answered, "This is its interpretation: the three baskets are three days; |
| 19 après lesquels le Pharaon te fera couper la tête, et te fera ensuite attacher à un gibet, où les oiseaux déchireront ta chair. | 19 within three days Pharaoh will lift up your head--from you!--and hang you on a tree; and the birds will eat the flesh from you." |
| 20 Le troisième jour suivant (d'après) étant celui de la naissance du Pharaon, il fit un grand festin à ses serviteurs, pendant lequel il se souvint du grand échanson et du grand panetier. | 20 On the third day, which was Pharaoh's birthday, he made a feast for all his servants, and lifted up the head of the chief butler and the head of the chief baker among his servants. |
| 21 (Or) Il rétablit l'un dans sa charge, afin qu'il continuât de lui présenter la coupe, | 21 He restored the chief butler to his butlership, and he placed the cup in Pharaoh's hand; |
| 22 et il fit attacher l'autre à un gibet, ce qui vérifia l'interprétation que Joseph avait donnée à leurs songes. | 22 but he hanged the chief baker, as Joseph had interpreted to them. |
| 23 Cependant le grand échanson, se voyant rentré en faveur après sa disgrâce, ne se souvint plus de son interprète. | 23 Yet the chief butler did not remember Joseph, but forgot him. |
