| 2 et voici ses générations : Joseph, âgé de seize ans, et n'étant encore qu'un enfant, conduisait le troupeau de son père avec ses frères, et il était avec les enfants de Bala et de Zelpha, femmes de son père. Il accusa alors ses frères, devant son père, d'un crime énorme (détestable). | 2 And these are his generations. Joseph, when he was sixteen years old, was pasturing the flock with his brothers, when he was still a boy. And he was with the sons of Bilhah and Zilpah, the wives of his father. And he accused his brothers to their father of a most sinful crime. |
| 3 (Or) Israël aimait Joseph plus que tous ses autres enfants, parce qu'il l'avait eu étant déjà vieux ; et il lui avait faire une robe de plusieurs couleurs. | 3 Now Israel loved Joseph above all his sons, because he had conceived him in his old age. And he made him a tunic, woven of many colors. |
| 4 Ses frères, voyant donc que leur père l'aimait plus que tous ses autres enfants (frères), le haïssaient et ne pouvaient lui parler avec douceur. | 4 Then his brothers, seeing that he was loved by his father more than all his other sons, hated him, and they were not able to say anything peacefully to him. |
| 5 Il arriva aussi que Joseph rapporta à ses frères un songe qu'il avait eu, qui fut encore la semence d'une plus grande haine. | 5 Then it also happened that he recounted the vision of a dream to his brothers, for which reason a greater hatred began to be nurtured. |
| 6 Car il leur dit : Ecoutez le songe que j'ai eu. | 6 And he said to them, “Listen to my dream that I saw. |
| 7 Il me semblait que je liais (nous) des gerbes dans la campagne, que ma gerbe se leva et se tint debout, et que les vôtres, entourant la mienne, l'adoraient. | 7 I thought we were binding sheaves in the field. And my sheaf seemed to rise up and stand, and your sheaves, standing in a circle, reverenced my sheaf.” |
| 8 Ses frères lui répondirent : Est-ce que tu seras notre roi, et (ou) serons-nous soumis à ta puissance ? Ces songes et ses entretiens allumèrent donc encore davantage l'envie et la haine qu'ils avaient contre lui. | 8 His brothers responded: “Would you be our king? Or will we be subject to your dominion?” Therefore, this matter of his dreams and words provided kindling to their envy and hatred. |
| 9 Il eut encore un autre songe, qu'il raconta à ses frères, en leur disant : J'ai vu en songe que (comme) le soleil et la lune, et onze étoiles m'adoraient. | 9 Likewise, he saw another dream, which he explained to his brothers, saying, “I saw by a dream, as if the sun, and the moon, and eleven stars were reverencing me.” |
| 10 Lorsqu'il eut rapporté ce songe à son père et à ses frères, son père lui en fit réprimande, et il lui dit : Que voudrait dire ce songe que tu as eu ? Est-ce que ta mère, tes frères et moi nous t'adorerons sur la terre ? | 10 And when he had related this to his father and brothers, his father rebuked him, and he said: “What does it mean to you, this dream that you have seen? Should I, and your mother, and your brothers reverence you upon the earth?” |
| 11 Ainsi ses frères étaient transportés d'envie contre lui ; mais son père considérait tout cela en silence. | 11 Therefore, his brothers were envious of him. Yet truly, his father considered the matter silently. |
| 12 Il arriva alors que les frères de Joseph s'arrêtèrent à Sichem, où ils faisaient paître les troupeaux de leur père. | 12 And while his brothers were lodging at Shechem, pasturing their father’s flocks, |
| 13 Et Israël dit à Joseph : Tes frères font paître nos brebis dans le pays de Sichem ; viens, et je t'enverrai vers eux. | 13 Israel said to him: “Your brothers are pasturing the sheep at Shechem. Come, I will send you to them.” And when he answered, |
| 14 Je suis tout prêt, lui dit Joseph. Jacob ajouta : Va, et vois si tes frères se portent bien et si les troupeaux sont en bon état, et tu me rapporteras ce qui se passe. Ayant donc été envoyé de la vallée d'Hébron, il vint à Sichem ; | 14 “I am ready,” he said to him, “Go, and see if everything is prospering with your brothers and the cattle, and report to me what is happening.” So, having been sent from the valley of Hebron, he arrived at Shechem. |
| 15 et un homme, l'ayant trouvé errant dans la campagne, lui demanda ce qu'il cherchait. | 15 And a man found him wandering in a field, and he asked him what he was seeking. |
| 16 Il lui répondit : Je cherche mes frères ; je vous prie de me dire où ils font paître leurs troupeaux. | 16 So he responded: “I seek my brothers. Tell me where they pasture the flocks.” |
| 17 Cet homme lui répondit : Ils se sont retirés de ce lieu, et j'ai entendu qu'ils se disaient : Allons vers Dothaïn. Joseph alla donc après ses frères, et il les trouva à Dothaïn. | 17 And the man said to him: “They have withdrawn from this place. But I heard them saying, ‘Let us go to Dothan.’ ” Therefore, Joseph continued on after his brothers, and he found them at Dothan. |
| 18 Lorsqu'ils l'eurent aperçu de loin, avant qu'il se fût approché d'eux, ils résolurent de le tuer ; | 18 And, when they had seen him from afar, before he approached them, they decided to kill him. |
| 19 et ils se disaient l'un à l'autre : Voici notre (le) songeur qui vient. | 19 And they said one to another: “Behold, the dreamer approaches. |
| 20 Allons, tuons-le et jetons-le dans une vieille citerne ; nous dirons qu'une bête sauvage l'a dévoré, et après cela on verra à quoi ses songes lui auront servi. | 20 Come, let us kill him and cast him into the old cistern. And let us say: ‘an evil wild beast has devoured him.’ And then it will become apparent what his dreams will do for him.” |
| 21 Ruben, les ayant entendus parler ainsi, tâchait de le tirer d'entre leurs mains, et il leur disait : | 21 But Reuben, on hearing this, strove to free him from their hands, and he said: |
| 22 Ne le tuez point (son âme) et ne répandez point son sang, mais jetez-le dans cette citerne qui est au désert, et conservez vos mains pures. Il disait cela dans le dessein de le tirer de leurs mains et de le rendre à son père. | 22 “Do not take away his life, nor shed blood. But throw him into this cistern, which is in the wilderness, and so keep your hands harmless.” But he said this, wanting to rescue him from their hands, so as to return him to his father. |
| 23 Aussitôt donc que Joseph fut arrivé près de ses frères, ils lui ôtèrent sa robe de plusieurs couleurs, qui le couvrait jusqu'en bas ; | 23 And so, as soon as he came to his brothers, they very quickly stripped him of his tunic, which was ankle-length and woven of many colors, |
| 24 et ils le jetèrent dans cette (la) vieille citerne, qui était sans eau. | 24 and they cast him into an old cistern, which held no water. |
| 25 S'étant ensuite assis pour manger, ils virent des Ismaélites qui passaient, et qui, venant de Galaad, portaient sur leurs chameaux des parfums (aromates), de la résine et de la myrrhe (stacté), et s'en allaient en Egypte. | 25 And sitting down to eat bread, they saw some Ishmaelites, travelers coming from Gilead, with their camels, carrying spices, and resin, and oil of myrrh into Egypt. |
| 26 Alors Juda dit à ses frères : Que nous servira de tuer notre frère et d'avoir caché sa mort ? | 26 Therefore, Judah said to his brothers: “What will it profit us, if we kill our brother and conceal his blood? |
| 27 Il vaut mieux le vendre à ces Ismaélites et ne point souiller nos mains, car il est notre frère et notre chair. Ses frères consentirent à ce qu'il disait. | 27 It is better that he be sold to the Ishmaelites, and then our hands will not be defiled. For he is our brother and our flesh.” His brothers agreed to his words. |
| 28 L'ayant donc tiré de la citerne, et voyant ces marchands madianites qui passaient, ils le vendirent vingt pièces d'argent aux Ismaélites, qui le menèrent en Egypte. | 28 And when the Midianite merchants were passing by, they drew him from the cistern, and they sold him to the Ishmaelites for twenty pieces of silver. And these led him into Egypt. |
| 29 Ruben étant retourné à la citerne, et n'y ayant point trouvé l'enfant, | 29 And Reuben, returning to the cistern, did not find the boy. |
| 30 déchira ses vêtements et vint dire à ses frères : L'enfant ne paraît plus ; et que deviendrai-je ? | 30 And rending his garments, he went to his brothers and said, “The boy is not present, and so where shall I go?” |
| 31 Après cela ils prirent la robe de Joseph, et l'ayant trempée dans le sang d'un chevreau qu'ils avaient tué, | 31 Then they took his tunic, and they dipped it in the blood of a young goat, which they had killed, |
| 32 ils l'envoyèrent à son père, lui faisant dire par ceux qui la lui portaient : Voici une robe que nous avons trouvée ; vois si c'est celle de ton fils, ou non. | 32 sending those who carried it to their father, and they said: “We found this. See whether it is the tunic of your son or not.” |
| 33 Le père l'ayant reconnue, dit : C'est la robe de mon fils ; une bête cruelle l'a dévoré, une bête a dévoré Joseph. | 33 And when the father acknowledged it, he said: “It is the tunic of my son. An evil wild beast has eaten him; a beast has devoured Joseph.” |
| 34 Et ayant déchiré ses vêtements, il se couvrit d'un cilice, pleurant son fils fort longtemps. | 34 And tearing his garments, he was clothed in haircloth, mourning his son for a long time. |
| 35 Alors tous ses enfants s'assemblèrent pour tâcher de soulager leur père dans sa douleur ; mais il ne voulut point recevoir de consolation, et il leur dit : Je pleurerai toujours, jusqu'à ce que je descende avec mon fils au séjour des morts (en enfer, note). Ainsi il continua toujours de pleurer. | 35 Then, when all of his sons gathered together to ease their father’s sorrow, he was not willing to accept consolation, but he said: “I will descend in mourning to my son in the underworld.” And while he persevered in weeping, |
| 36 Cependant les Madianites vendirent Joseph en Egypte à Putiphar, eunuque du Pharaon, et général de ses troupes (chef des soldats). | 36 the Midianites in Egypt sold Joseph to Potiphar, a eunuch of Pharaoh, instructor of the soldiers. |
