| 1 (Cependant) Sur le soir deux anges vinrent à Sodome, lorsque (et) Lot était assis à la porte de la ville. Les ayant vus, il se leva, alla au-devant d'eux, et se prosterna jusqu'en terre. | 1 The two angels reached Sodom in the evening, as Lot was sitting at the gate of Sodom. When Lot saw them, he got up to greet them; and bowing down with his face to the ground, |
| 2 Puis il leur dit : Venez, je vous prie (conjure), mes seigneurs, dans la maison de votre serviteur, et demeurez-y. Vous y laverez vos pieds, et demain vous continuerez votre chemin. Ils lui répondirent : Nous n'irons point chez vous, mais nous demeurerons dans la rue (sur la place). | 2 he said, "Please, gentlemen, come aside into your servant's house for the night, and bathe your feet; you can get up early to continue your journey." But they replied, "No, we shall pass the night in the town square." |
| 3 (Mais) Il les pressa de nouveau avec grande instance, et les força de venir chez lui. Après qu'ils furent entrés en sa maison, il leur fit un festin ; il fit cuire des pains sans levain (azymes), et ils mangèrent. | 3 He urged them so strongly, however, that they turned aside to his place and entered his house. He prepared a meal for them, baking cakes without leaven, and they dined. |
| 4 Mais avant qu'ils se fussent retirés pour se coucher, la maison fut assiégée par les habitants de cette ville, depuis les enfants jusqu'au vieillard ; tout le peuple s'y trouva. | 4 Before they went to bed, all the townsmen of Sodom, both young and old--all the people to the last man--closed in on the house. |
| 5 Alors ayant appelé Lot, ils lui dirent : Où sont ces hommes qui sont entrés ce soir (cette nuit) chez toi ? Fais-les sortir, afin que nous les connaissions. | 5 They called to Lot and said to him, "Where are the men who came to your house tonight? Bring them out to us that we may have intimacies with them." |
| 6 Lot sortit de sa maison ; et, ayant fermé la porte derrière lui, il leur dit : | 6 Lot went out to meet them at the entrance. When he had shut the door behind him, |
| 7 Ne songez point, je vous prie, mes frères, ne songez point à commettre un si grand mal. | 7 he said, "I beg you, my brothers, not to do this wicked thing. |
| 8 J'ai deux filles qui sont encore vierges ; je vous les amènerai : usez-en comme il vous plaira, pourvu que vous ne fassiez point de mal à ces hommes-là, parce qu'ils sont entrés à l'ombre de mon toit. | 8 I have two daughters who have never had intercourse with men. Let me bring them out to you, and you may do to them as you please. But don't do anything to these men, for you know they have come under the shelter of my roof." |
| 9 Mais ils lui répondirent : Retire-toi. Et ils ajoutèrent : Tu es venu ici comme un étranger parmi nous, est-ce afin d'être notre juge ? Nous te traiterons donc toi-même encore plus mal qu'eux. Et ils se jetèrent sur (faisaient à) Lot avec (la plus) grande violence. Lorsqu'ils étaient déjà sur le point de rompre les portes, | 9 They replied, "Stand back! This fellow," they sneered, "came here as an immigrant, and now he dares to give orders! We'll treat you worse than them!" With that, they pressed hard against Lot, moving in closer to break down the door. |
| 10 ces deux hommes qui étaient au dedans, prirent Lot par la main, et l'ayant fait entrer dans la maison, ils en fermèrent la porte | 10 But his guests put out their hands, pulled Lot inside with them, and closed the door; |
| 11 et frappèrent d'aveuglement tous ceux qui étaient au dehors, depuis le plus petit jusqu'au plus grand, de sorte qu'ils ne purent plus trouver la porte de la maison. | 11 at the same time they struck the men at the entrance of the house, one and all, with such a blinding light that they were utterly unable to reach the doorway. |
| 12 Ils dirent ensuite à Lot : As-tu ici quelqu'un de tes proches, un gendre, ou des fils, ou des filles ? Fais sortir de cette ville tous ceux qui t'appartiennent ; | 12 Then the angels said to Lot: "Who else belongs to you here? Your sons (sons-in-law) and your daughters and all who belong to you in the city--take them away from it! |
| 13 car nous allons détruire ce lieu, parce que le cri (la clameur) des abominations de ces peuples s'est élevé(e) de plus en plus devant le Seigneur, et il nous a envoyés pour les perdre. | 13 We are about to destroy this place, for the outcry reaching the LORD against those in the city is so great that he has sent us to destroy it." |
| 14 Lot étant donc sorti, parla à ses gendres qui devaient épouser ses filles, et il leur dit : Sortez promptement de ce lieu, car le Seigneur va détruire cette ville. Mais ils s'imaginèrent qu'il disait cela en se moquant. | 14 So Lot went out and spoke to his sons-in-law, who had contracted marriage with his daughters. "Get up and leave this place," he told them; "the LORD is about to destroy the city." But his sons-in-law thought he was joking. |
| 15 A la pointe du jour, les anges pressaient fort Lot de sortir, en lui disant : Lève-toi, et emmène ta femme et tes deux filles, de peur que tu ne périsses aussi toi-même dans la ruine (le châtiment) de cette ville. | 15 As dawn was breaking, the angels urged Lot on, saying, "On your way! Take with you your wife and your two daughters who are here, or you will be swept away in the punishment of the city." |
| 16 Voyant qu'il différait toujours, ils le prirent par la main, car le Seigneur voulait le sauver, et ils prirent de même sa femme et ses deux filles. | 16 When he hesitated, the men, by the LORD'S mercy, seized his hand and the hands of his wife and his two daughters and led them to safety outside the city. |
| 17 (Et) L'ayant ainsi fait sortir de la maison, ils le conduisirent hors de la ville, et ils lui parlèrent de cette sorte : Sauve ta vie (ton âme) ; ne regarde point derrière toi, et ne t'arrêtez point dans tout le pays d'alentour ; mais sauve-toi sur la montagne, de peur que tu ne périsses aussi toi-même avec les autres. | 17 As soon as they had been brought outside, he was told: "Flee for your life! Don't look back or stop anywhere on the Plain. Get off to the hills at once, or you will be swept away." |
| 18 (Et) Lot leur répondit : Seigneur, | 18 "Oh, no, my lord!" replied Lot. |
| 19 puisque votre serviteur a trouvé grâce devant vous, et que vous avez signalé envers lui votre grande miséricorde en me sauvant la vie (mon âme), considérez, je vous prie, que je ne puis me sauver sur la montagne, étant en danger que le malheur ne me surprenne auparavant, et que je meure. | 19 "You have already thought enough of your servant to do me the great kindness of intervening to save my life. But I cannot flee to the hills to keep the disaster from overtaking me, and so I shall die. |
| 20 Mais il y a près d'ici une ville où je puis fuir ; elle est petite, je puis m'y sauver. Vous savez qu'elle n'est pas grande, et elle me sauvera la vie (mon âme ne vivra-t-elle pas ?). | 20 Look, this town ahead is near enough to escape to. It's only a small place. Let me flee there--it's a small place, isn't it?--that my life may be saved." |
| 21 L'ange lui répondit : J'accorde encore cette grâce à la prière que tu me faites, de ne pas détruire la ville pour laquelle tu me parles. | 21 "Well, then," he replied, "I will also grant you the favor you now ask. I will not overthrow the town you speak of. |
| 22 Hâte-toi de te sauver en ce lieu-là, parce que je ne pourrai rien faire jusqu'à ce que tu y sois entré. C'est pour cette raison que cette ville fut appelé Ségor. | 22 Hurry, escape there! I cannot do anything until you arrive there." That is why the town is called Zoar. |
| 23 Le soleil se levait sur la terre au (en) même temps que Lot entra dans Ségor. | 23 The sun was just rising over the earth as Lot arrived in Zoar; |
| 24 Alors le Seigneur fit descendre du Seigneur qui est au ciel (mettre à la fin) une pluie de soufre et de feu sur Sodome et sur Gomorrhe, | 24 at the same time the LORD rained down sulphurous fire upon Sodom and Gomorrah (from the LORD out of heaven). |
| 25 et il perdit ces villes, et tout le pays d'alentour, et tous les habitants des cités, et tout ce qui avait quelque verdure sur la terre. | 25 He overthrew those cities and the whole Plain, together with the inhabitants of the cities and the produce of the soil. |
| 26 Or la femme de Lot regarda derrière elle, et elle fut changée en une statue de sel. | 26 But Lot's wife looked back, and she was turned into a pillar of salt. |
| 27 Or Abraham s'étant levé le matin, vint au lieu où il avait été auparavant avec le Seigneur, | 27 Early the next morning Abraham went to the place where he had stood in the LORD'S presence. |
| 28 et regardant Sodome et Gomorrhe, et tout le pays d'alentour, il vit des cendres enflammées qui s'élevaient de la terre comme la fumée d'une fournaise. | 28 As he looked down toward Sodom and Gomorrah and the whole region of the Plain, he saw dense smoke over the land rising like fumes from a furnace. |
| 29 Lorsque Dieu détruisait les villes de ce pays-là, il se souvint d'Abraham, et délivra Lot de la ruine de ces villes où il avait demeuré. | 29 Thus it came to pass: when God destroyed the Cities of the Plain, he was mindful of Abraham by sending Lot away from the upheaval by which God overthrew the cities where Lot had been living. |
| 30 Lot étant dans Ségor, eut peur (d'y périr,) s'il y demeurait. Il se retira donc sur la montagne avec ses deux filles, entra dans une caverne, et y demeura avec elles. | 30 Since Lot was afraid to stay in Zoar, he and his two daughters went up from Zoar and settled in the hill country, where he lived with his two daughters in a cave. |
| 31 Alors l'aînée dit à la cadette : Notre père est vieux, et il n'est resté aucun homme sur la terre qui puisse nous épouser selon la coutume de tous les pays. | 31 The older one said to the younger: "Our father is getting old, and there is not a man on earth to unite with us as was the custom everywhere. |
| 32 Donnons donc du vin à notre père, et enivrons-le, et dormons avec lui, afin que nous puissions conserver de la race de (une postérité à) notre père. | 32 Come, let us ply our father with wine and then lie with him, that we may have offspring by our father." |
| 33 Elles donnèrent donc cette nuit-là du vin à boire à leur père ; et l'aînée dormit avec lui, sans qu'il sentît ni quand elle se coucha, ni quand elle se leva. | 33 So that night they plied their father with wine, and the older one went in and lay with her father; but he was not aware of her lying down or her getting up. |
| 34 Le jour suivant l'aînée dit à la seconde : Tu sais que j'ai dormi hier avec mon père ; donnons-lui encore du vin à boire cette nuit, et tu dormiras aussi avec lui ; afin que nous conservions de la race (une postérité) de notre père. | 34 Next day the older one said to the younger: "Last night it was I who lay with my father. Let us ply him with wine again tonight, and then you go in and lie with him, that we may both have offspring by our father." |
| 35 (Et) Elles donnèrent donc encore cette nuit-là du vin à boire à leur père, et sa seconde fille dormit avec lui, sans qu'il sentît non plus ni quand elle se coucha, ni quand elle se leva. | 35 So that night, too, they plied their father with wine, and then the younger one went in and lay with him; but again he was not aware of her lying down or her getting up. |
| 36 Ainsi elles conçurent toutes deux de Lot leur père. | 36 Thus both of Lot's daughters became pregnant by their father. |
| 37 L'aînée enfanta un fils, et elle le nomma Moab. C'est lui qui est le père des Moabites, qui existent encore aujourd'hui. | 37 The older one gave birth to a son whom she named Moab, saying, "From my father." He is the ancestor of the Moabites of today. |
| 38 La seconde enfanta aussi un fils, qu'elle appela Ammon, c'est-à-dire, le fils de mon peuple. C'est lui qui est le père des Ammonites, que nous voyons encore aujourd'hui. | 38 The younger one, too, gave birth to a son, and she named him Ammon, saying, "The son of my kin." He is the ancestor of the Ammonites of today. |
