| 1 Les habitants de Cariathiarim, étant venus, emmenèrent l'arche du Seigneur; ils la mirent dans la maison d'Abinadab à Gabaa, et consacrèrent son fils Eléazar, afin qu'il gardât l'arche du Seigneur. | 1 And the men of Kiriath-jearim came and took up the ark of the LORD, and brought it to the house of Abinadab on the hill; and they consecrated his son, Eleazar, to have charge of the ark of the LORD. |
| 2 Ils s'était écoulé des jours nombreux depuis que l'arche du Seigneur demeurait à Cariathiarim, et c'était déjà la vingtième année, lorsque toute la maison d'Israël commença à chercher son repos dans le Seigneur. | 2 From the day that the ark was lodged at Kiriath-jearim, a long time passed, some twenty years, and all the house of Israel lamented after the LORD. |
| 3 Alors Samuel dit à toute la maison d'Israël: Si vous revenez au Seigneur de tout votre coeur, ôtez du milieu de vous les dieux étrangers, les Baals et les Astaroth; tenez vos coeurs prêts à obéir au Seigneur, et ne servez que Lui seul; et Il vous délivrera de la main des Philistins. | 3 Then Samuel said to all the house of Israel, "If you are returning to the LORD with all your heart, then put away the foreign gods and the Ashtaroth from among you, and direct your heart to the LORD, and serve him only, and he will deliver you out of the hand of the Philistines." |
| 4 Les enfants d'Israël rejetèrent donc les Baals et les Astaroth, et ne servirent que le Seigneur. | 4 So Israel put away the Baals and the Ashtaroth, and they served the LORD only. |
| 5 Et Samuel leur dit: Assemblez tout Israël à Masphath, afin que je prie le Seigneur pour vous. | 5 Then Samuel said, "Gather all Israel at Mizpah, and I will pray to the LORD for you." |
| 6 Et ils s'assemblèrent à Masphath, et ils puisèrent de l'eau qu'ils répandirent devant le Seigneur; ils jeûnèrent ce jour-là, et dirent: Nous avons péché devant le Seigneur. Or Samuel jugea les enfants d'Israël à Masphath. | 6 So they gathered at Mizpah, and drew water and poured it out before the LORD, and fasted on that day, and said there, "We have sinned against the LORD." And Samuel judged the people of Israel at Mizpah. |
| 7 Quand les Philistins surent que les enfants d'Israël s'étaient assemblés à Masphath, leurs princes marchèrent contre Israël; les enfants d'Israël, l'ayant appris, eurent peur des Philistins. | 7 Now when the Philistines heard that the people of Israel had gathered at Mizpah, the lords of the Philistines went up against Israel. And when the people of Israel heard of it they were afraid of the Philistines. |
| 8 Et ils dirent à Samuel: Ne cessez point de crier pour nous au Seigneur notre Dieu, afin qu'Il nous sauve de la main des Philistins. | 8 And the people of Israel said to Samuel, "Do not cease to cry to the LORD our God for us, that he may save us from the hand of the Philistines." |
| 9 Samuel prit donc un agneau qui têtait encore, et il l'offrit tout entier en holocauste au Seigneur. Samuel cria au Seigneur pour Israël, et le Seigneur l'exauça. | 9 So Samuel took a sucking lamb and offered it as a whole burnt offering to the LORD; and Samuel cried to the LORD for Israel, and the LORD answered him. |
| 10 Tandis que Samuel offrait son holocauste, les Philistins commencèrent le combat contre Israël, et le Seigneur fit éclater ce jour-là Son tonnerre avec un bruit épouvantable sur les Philistins, et Il les frappa de terreur. Ainsi ils furent défaits par Israël. | 10 As Samuel was offering up the burnt offering, the Philistines drew near to attack Israel; but the LORD thundered with a mighty voice that day against the Philistines and threw them into confusion; and they were routed before Israel. |
| 11 Les Israélites, étant sortis de Masphath, poursuivirent les Philistins en les taillant en pièces jusqu'au lieu qui est au-dessous de Bethchar. | 11 And the men of Israel went out of Mizpah and pursued the Philistines, and smote them, as far as below Beth-car. |
| 12 Et Samuel prit une pierre qu'il mit entre Masphath et Sen; et il appella ce lieu la Pierre du secours, en disant: Le Seigneur est venu jusqu'ici à notre secours. | 12 Then Samuel took a stone and set it up between Mizpah and Jeshanah, and called its name Ebenezer; for he said, "Hitherto the LORD has helped us." |
| 13 Les Philistins furent alors humiliés, et ils n'osèrent plus venir sur les terres d'Israël. Car la main du Seigneur fut sur les Philistins tant que Samuel gouverna le peuple. | 13 So the Philistines were subdued and did not again enter the territory of Israel. And the hand of the LORD was against the Philistines all the days of Samuel. |
| 14 Les villes que les Philistins avaient prises sur Israël, depuis Accaron jusqu'à Geth, furent rendues avec toutes leurs terres au peuple d'Israël. Ainsi Samuel délivra les Israélites de la main des Philistins; et il y avait paix entre Israël et les Amorrhéens. | 14 The cities which the Philistines had taken from Israel were restored to Israel, from Ekron to Gath; and Israel rescued their territory from the hand of the Philistines. There was peace also between Israel and the Amorites. |
| 15 Samuel jugeait Israël pendant tous les jours de sa vie. | 15 Samuel judged Israel all the days of his life. |
| 16 Il allait tous les ans à Béthel, à Galgala, et à Masphath, et il y jugeait Israël. | 16 And he went on a circuit year by year to Bethel, Gilgal, and Mizpah; and he judged Israel in all these places. |
| 17 Il retournait ensuite à Ramatha, qui était le lieu de sa demeure, et où il jugeait aussi le peuple. Il y bâtit même un autel au Seigneur. | 17 Then he would come back to Ramah, for his home was there, and there also he administered justice to Israel. And he built there an altar to the LORD. |
