Je me tirerai donc d'entre ses mains. | 1 'One of these days,' David thought, 'I shal perish at the hand of Saul. The best thing that I can do is toget away into the country of the Philistines; then Saul will give up tracking me through the length and breadth ofIsrael and I shal be safe from him.' |
| 2 Ainsi David partit, et s'en alla avec ses six cents hommes chez Achis, fils de Maoch, roi de Geth. | 2 So David set off and went over, he and his six hundred men, to Achish son of Maoch, king of Gath. |
| 3 Il y demeura avec ses gens, dont chacun avait sa famille; et il y amena ses deux femmes, Achinoam de Jezraël et Abigaïl, femme de Nabal, de Carmel. | 3 He settled at Gath with Achish, he and his men, each with his family and David with his two wives,Ahinoam of Jezreel and Abigail widow of Nabal of Carmel. |
| 4 Et Saül fut averti que David s'était retiré à Geth, et il ne se mit plus en peine de le chercher. | 4 When news reached Saul that David had fled to Gath, he stopped searching for him. |
| 5 Or David dit à Achis: Si j'ai trouvé grâce à vos yeux, donnez-moi un lieu dans une des villes de ce pays, où je puisse demeurer; car pourquoi votre serviteur demeurera-t-il avec vous dans la ville royale? | 5 David said to Achish, 'If I have won your favour, let me be given a place in one of the outlying towns,where I can live. Why should your servant live in the royal city with you?' |
| 6 Achis lui donna donc alors Sicéleg; et c'est ainsi que Sicéleg est venue aux rois de Juda, qui la possèdent encore aujourd'hui. | 6 That very day Achish gave him Ziklag; and this is why Ziklag has been the property of the kings ofJudah to the present day. |
| 7 David demeura dans le pays des Philistins pendant quatre mois. | 7 The time that David stayed in Philistine territory amounted to a year and four months. |
| 8 Il faisait des incursions avec ses hommes, et pillait Gessuri, Gerzi et les Amalécites; car ces bourgs étaient autrefois habités dans la direction de Sur jusqu'au pays d'Egypte. | 8 David and his men went out on raids against the Geshurites, Girzites and Amalekites, for these arethe tribes inhabiting the region which, from Telam, goes in the direction of Shur, as far as Egypt. |
| 9 Et il ravageait toute la contrée, et il ne laissait en vie ni homme ni femme; et après qu'il avait enlevé les brebis, les boeufs, les ânes, les chameaux et les vêtements, il revenait trouver Achis. | 9 David laid the countryside waste and left neither man nor woman alive; he carried off the sheep andcattle, the donkeys, camels and clothing, and then came back again to Achish. |
| 10 Et lorsqu'Achis lui disait: Contre qui avez-vous fait une incussion aujourd'hui? David lui répondait: Vers la partie méridionale de Juda, vers le midi de Jéraméel et le midi de Céni. | 10 Achish would ask, 'Where did you go raiding today?' David would reply, 'Against the Negeb ofJudah,' or 'the Negeb of Jerahmeel,' or 'the Negeb of the Kenites.' |
| 11 David ne laissait en vie ni homme ni femme, et il n'en amenait pas un à Geth; de peur, disait-il, que ces gens-là ne parlent contre nous. C'est ainsi que David se conduisait; et c'est ce qu'il avait coutume de faire pendant tout le temps qu'il demeura parmi les Philistins. | 11 David spared neither man nor woman to bring back alive to Gath, 'in case', as he thought, 'theyinform on us and say, "David did such and such." ' This was the way David conducted his raids al the time hestayed in Philistine territory. |
| 12 Achis se fiait donc tout à fait à David, et il disait en lui-même: Il a fait de grands maux à Israël son peuple: c'est pourquoi il demeurera toujours attaché à mon service. | 12 Achish trusted David. 'He has made himself detested by his own people Israel,' he thought, 'and sowil be my servant for ever.' |
