| 1 De là David monta vers les lieux très forts d'Engaddi, où il demeura. | 1 And it came to pass, when Saul was returned from following the Philistines, that it was told him, saying, Behold, David is in the wilderness of En-gedi. |
| 2 Et lorsque Saül fut revenu, après avoir poursuivi les Philistins, on vint lui dire que David était dans le désert d'Engaddi. | 2 Then Saul took three thousand chosen men out of all Israel, and went to seek David and his men upon the rocks of the wild goats. |
| 3 Il prit donc avec lui trois mille hommes choisis de tout Israël, et il s'avança pour chercher David et ses hommes jusque sur les rochers les plus escarpés, accessibles seulement aux chèvres sauvages. | 3 And he came to the sheepcotes by the way, where was a cave; and Saul went in to cover his feet: and David and his men remained in the sides of the cave. |
| 4 Et il vint à des parcs de brebis qu'il rencontra dans son chemin; et il y avait là une caverne, où il entra pour une nécessité naturelle. Or David et ses hommes s'étaient cachés dans le fond de cette caverne. | 4 And the men of David said unto him, Behold the day of which the LORD said unto thee, Behold, I will deliver thine enemy into thine hand, that thou mayest do to him as it shall seem good unto thee. Then David arose, and cut off the skirt of Saul's robe privily. |
| 5 Les hommes de David lui dirent: Voici le jour dont le Seigneur vous a dit: Je vous livrerai votre ennemi, afin que vous le traitiez comme il vous plaira. David, s'étant donc avancé, coupa doucement le pan du manteau de Saül. | 5 And it came to pass afterward, that David's heart smote him, because he had cut off Saul's skirt. |
| 6 Et aussitôt le coeur lui battit, parce qu'il avait coupé le pan du manteau de Saül. | 6 And he said unto his men, The LORD forbid that I should do this thing unto my master, the LORD's anointed, to stretch forth mine hand against him, seeing he is the anointed of the LORD. |
| 7 Et il dit à ses gens: Dieu me garde de commettre contre mon maître et l'oint du Seigneur cet excès de porter la main sur lui; car il est le christ du Seigneur. | 7 So David stayed his servants with these words, and suffered them not to rise against Saul. But Saul rose up out of the cave, and went on his way. |
| 8 David, par ses paroles, arrêta la violence de ses hommes, et les empêcha de se jeter sur Saül. Or Saül sortit de la caverne et continua son chemin. | 8 David also arose afterward, and went out of the cave, and cried after Saul, saying, My lord the king. And when Saul looked behind him, David stooped with his face to the earth, and bowed himself. |
| 9 David le suivit, et, étant sorti de la caverne, il cria après lui, et lui dit: Monseigneur le roi! Saül regarda derrière lui; et David s'inclina le visage contre terre et se prosterna; | 9 And David said to Saul, Wherefore hearest thou men's words, saying, Behold, David seeketh thy hurt? |
| 10 et il lui dit: Pourquoi écoutez-vous les paroles de ceux qui vous disent: David ne cherche qu'une occasion de vous perdre? | 10 Behold, this day thine eyes have seen how that the LORD had delivered thee to day into mine hand in the cave: and some bade me kill thee: but mine eye spared thee; and I said, I will not put forth mine hand against my lord; for he is the LORD's anointed. |
| 11 Vous voyez aujourd'hui de vos yeux que le Seigneur vous a livré entre mes mains dans la caverne. On a voulu me porter à vous tuer, mais je vous ai épargné. Car j'ai dit: Je ne porterai pas la main sur mon maître, parce qu'il est le christ du Seigneur. | 11 Moreover, my father, see, yea, see the skirt of thy robe in my hand: for in that I cut off the skirt of thy robe and killed thee not, know thou and see that there is neither evil nor transgression in mine hand, and I have not sinned against thee; yet thou huntest my soul to take it. |
| 12 Voyez vous-même, mon père, et reconnaissez le pan de votre manteau dans ma main; car, en coupant le pan de votre manteau, je n'ai pas voulu porter la main sur vous. Considérez et voyez que je ne suis coupable d'aucun mal ni d'aucune injustice, et que je n'ai point péché contre vous. Et cependant vous cherchez tous les moyens de m'ôter la vie. | 12 The LORD judge between me and thee, and the LORD avenge me of thee: but mine hand shall not be upon thee. |
| 13 Que le Seigneur soit juge entre vous et moi. Que le Seigneur me venge Lui-même de vous; mais pour moi je ne porterai jamais la main sur vous. | 13 As saith the proverb of the ancients, Wickedness proceedeth from the wicked: but mine hand shall not be upon thee. |
| 14 C'est aux impies à faire des actions impies, selon l'ancien proverbe. Ainsi il ne m'arrivera jamais de porter la main sur vous. | 14 After whom is the king of Israel come out? after whom dost thou pursue? after a dead dog, after a flea. |
| 15 Qui poursuivez-vous, ô roi d'Israël? qui poursuivez-vous? C'est un chien mort, et une puce que vous poursuivez. | 15 The LORD therefore be judge, and judge between me and thee, and see, and plead my cause, and deliver me out of thine hand. |
| 16 Que le Seigneur soit juge, et qu'Il juge entre vous et moi; qu'Il considère et qu'Il prenne la défense de ma cause, et me délivre de vos mains. | 16 And it came to pass, when David had made an end of speaking these words unto Saul, that Saul said, Is this thy voice, my son David? And Saul lifted up his voice, and wept. |
| 17 Lorsque David eut fini d'adresser ces paroles à Saül, Saül lui dit: N'est-ce pas là votre voix, ô mon fils David? Et Saül éleva la voix et pleura. | 17 And he said to David, Thou art more righteous than I: for thou hast rewarded me good, whereas I have rewarded thee evil. |
| 18 Et il ajouta: Vous êtes plus juste que moi; car vous ne m'avez fait que du bien, et je ne vous ai rendu que du mal. | 18 And thou hast shewed this day how that thou hast dealt well with me: forasmuch as when the LORD had delivered me into thine hand, thou killedst me not. |
| 19 Et vous m'avez montré aujourd'hui votre bonté à mon égard, puisque, le Seigneur m'ayant livré entre vos mains, vous m'avez conservé la vie. | 19 For if a man find his enemy, will he let him go well away? wherefore the LORD reward thee good for that thou hast done unto me this day. |
| 20 Car qui est celui qui, ayant rencontré son ennemi, le laisse aller sans lui faire aucun mal? Que le Seigneur récompense cette bonté que vous m'avez témoignée aujourd'hui. | 20 And now, behold, I know well that thou shalt surely be king, and that the kingdom of Israel shall be established in thine hand. |
| 21 Et comme je sais que vous régnerez très certainement, et que vous posséderez le royaume d'Israël, | 21 Swear now therefore unto me by the LORD, that thou wilt not cut off my seed after me, and that thou wilt not destroy my name out of my father's house. |
| 22 jurez-moi par le Seigneur, que vous ne détruirez point ma race après moi, et que vous n'exterminerez pas mon nom de la maison de mon père. | 22 And David sware unto Saul. And Saul went home; but David and his men gat them up unto the hold. |
| 23 Et David le jura à Saül. Ainsi Saül retourna dans sa maison; et David et ses gens se retirèrent en des lieux plus sûrs. | |
