| 1 Or David s'enfuit de Naïoth de Ramatha, et il vint dire à Jonathas: Qu'ai-je fait? Quel est mon crime? Quelle faute ai-je commise contre ton père, pour qu'il en veuille à ma vie? | 1 Then David fled from Naioth in Ramah, and came and said before Jonathan, "What have I done? What is my guilt? And what is my sin before your father, that he seeks my life?" |
| 2 Jonathas lui dit: Non, tu ne mourras point; car mon père ne fait aucune chose, ni grande ni petite, sans m'en parler. N'y aurait-il donc que cela seul qu'il eût voulu me cacher? Non, cela ne sera point. | 2 And he said to him, "Far from it! You shall not die. Behold, my father does nothing either great or small without disclosing it to me; and why should my father hide this from me? It is not so." |
| 3 Et il se lia de nouveau à David par serment. Mais David lui dit: Ton père sait très bien que j'ai trouvé grâce à tes yeux; c'est pourquoi il aura dit en lui-même: Il ne faut pas que Jonathas sache cela, de crainte qu'il ne s'en afflige; car je jure par le Seigneur, et par ta vie, qu'il n'a, pour ainsi dire, qu'un point entre ma vie et ma mort. | 3 But David replied, "Your father knows well that I have found favor in your eyes; and he thinks, Let not Jonathan know this, lest he be grieved.' But truly, as the LORD lives and as your soul lives, there is but a step between me and death." |
| 4 Jonathas lui répondit: Je ferai pour toi tout ce que tu me diras. | 4 Then said Jonathan to David, "Whatever you say, I will do for you." |
| 5 C'est demain, dit David, le premier jour du mois, et j'ai coutume de m'asseoir auprès du roi pour manger; laisse-moi donc me cacher dans un champ jusqu'au soir du troisième jour. | 5 David said to Jonathan, "Behold, tomorrow is the new moon, and I should not fail to sit at table with the king; but let me go, that I may hide myself in the field till the third day at evening. |
| 6 Si ton père, regardant à côté de lui, me réclame, tu lui répondras: David m'a prié de le laisser aller promptement à Bethléem, sa patrie, parce qu'il y a là un sacrifice solennel pour tous ceux de sa tribu. | 6 If your father misses me at all, then say, David earnestly asked leave of me to run to Bethlehem his city; for there is a yearly sacrifice there for all the family.' |
| 7 S'il dit: Bien! il n'y a rien à craindre pour ton serviteur; mais s'il s'irrite, sache que sa mauvaise volonté est arrivée à son comble. | 7 If he says, Good!' it will be well with your servant; but if he is angry, then know that evil is determined by him. |
| 8 Aie donc pitié de ton serviteur, puisque tu as voulu que ton serviteur contractât avec toi une alliance devant le Seigneur. S'il y a en moi quelque crime, ôte-moi toi-même la vie; mais ne m'oblige pas de paraître devant ton père. | 8 Therefore deal kindly with your servant, for you have brought your servant into a sacred covenant with you. But if there is guilt in me, slay me yourself; for why should you bring me to your father?" |
| 9 Jonathas lui dit: Dieu t'en garde! car il n'est pas possible que, si j'apprends avec certitude que la haine de mon père contre toi est sans remède, je ne t'en avertisse pas. | 9 And Jonathan said, "Far be it from you! If I knew that it was determined by my father that evil should come upon you, would I not tell you?" |
| 10 David dit à Jonathas: S'il arrive que ton père te donne une réponse fâcheuse à mon sujet, par qui le saurai-je? | 10 Then said David to Jonathan, "Who will tell me if your father answers you roughly?" |
| 11 Jonathas lui répondit: Viens, et sortons à la campagne. Quand ils furent tous deux sortis dans les champs, | 11 And Jonathan said to David, "Come, let us go out into the field." So they both went out into the field. |
| 12 Jonathas dit à David: Seigneur Dieu d'Israël, si je puis découvrir le dessein de mon père demain ou après-demain, et si voyant quelque chose de favorable pour David, je ne le lui envoie pas dire aussitôt, | 12 And Jonathan said to David, "The LORD, the God of Israel, be witness! When I have sounded my father, about this time tomorrow, or the third day, behold, if he is well disposed toward David, shall I not then send and disclose it to you? |
| 13 traitez, Seigneur, Jonathas avec toute Votre sévérité. Mais si la mauvaise volonté de mon père continue toujours contre toi, je t'en avertirai, et je te renverrai, afin que tu ailles en paix, et que le Seigneur soit avec toi comme il a été avec mon père. | 13 But should it please my father to do you harm, the LORD do so to Jonathan, and more also, if I do not disclose it to you, and send you away, that you may go in safety. May the LORD be with you, as he has been with my father. |
| 14 Et si je vis, tu me traiteras avec la bonté du Seigneur; mais si je meurs, | 14 If I am still alive, show me the loyal love of the LORD, that I may not die; |
| 15 tu ne cesseras jamais d'en user avec bonté envers ma maison, quand le Seigneur aura exterminé les ennemis de David de dessus la terre jusqu'au dernier. Si je te manque de parole, que Dieu retranche Jonathas de sa maison, et que le Seigneur venge David de ses ennemis. | 15 and do not cut off your loyalty from my house for ever. When the LORD cuts off every one of the enemies of David from the face of the earth, |
| 16 Jonathas fit donc alliance avec la maison de David, en disant: Que le Seigneur se venge des ennemis de David. | 16 let not the name of Jonathan be cut off from the house of David. And may the LORD take vengeance on David's enemies." |
| 17 Jonathas conjura encore David par l'amour qu'il lui portait; car il l'aimait comme sa vie. | 17 And Jonathan made David swear again by his love for him; for he loved him as he loved his own soul. |
| 18 Et il dit à David: C'est demain le premier jour du mois, et on s'informera de toi; | 18 Then Jonathan said to him, "Tomorrow is the new moon; and you will be missed, because your seat will be empty. |
| 19 car on verra ta place vide ces deux jours-ci. Tu viendras donc promptement le jour d'après la fête, et tu te rendras au lieu où tu dois te cacher, et tu te tiendras près de la pierre nommée Ezel. | 19 And on the third day you will be greatly missed; then go to the place where you hid yourself when the matter was in hand, and remain beside yonder stone heap. |
| 20 Je tirerai trois flèches près de cette pierre, comme si je m'exerçais à tirer au blanc. | 20 And I will shoot three arrows to the side of it, as though I shot at a mark. |
| 21 J'enverrai aussi un jeune enfant, et je lui dirai: Va et apporte-moi mes flèches. | 21 And behold, I will send the lad, saying, Go, find the arrows.' If I say to the lad, Look, the arrows are on this side of you, take them,' then you are to come, for, as the LORD lives, it is safe for you and there is no danger. |
| 22 Si je lui dis: Les flèches sont en deçà de toi, ramasse-les; alors viens, car tout sera en paix pour toi, et tu n'auras rien à craindre, aussi vrai que le Seigneur vit. Si je dis à l'enfant: Les flèches sont au delà de toi; va-t'en en paix, parce que le Seigneur te renvoie. | 22 But if I say to the youth, Look, the arrows are beyond you,' then go; for the LORD has sent you away. |
| 23 Mais pour la parole que nous nous sommes donnée l'un à l'autre, que le Seigneur en soit à jamais témoin entre toi et moi. | 23 And as for the matter of which you and I have spoken, behold, the LORD is between you and me for ever." |
| 24 David se cacha donc dans le champ. Et le premier jour du mois étant venu, le roi se mit à table pour manger; | 24 So David hid himself in the field; and when the new moon came, the king sat down to eat food. |
| 25 et lorsqu'il se fut assis, selon la coutume, sur son siège qui était contre la muraille, Jonathas se leva, et Abner s'assit à côté de Saül, et la place de David demeura vide. | 25 The king sat upon his seat, as at other times, upon the seat by the wall; Jonathan sat opposite, and Abner sat by Saul's side, but David's place was empty. |
| 26 Saül n'en parla point ce jour-là, ayant cru que peut-être David ne se serait pas trouvé pur. | 26 Yet Saul did not say anything that day; for he thought, "Something has befallen him; he is not clean, surely he is not clean." |
| 27 Je second jour de la fête étant venu, la place de David se trouva encore vide. Alors Saül dit à Jonathas son fils: Pourquoi le fils d'Isaï n'est-il venu manger ni hier ni aujourd'hui? | 27 But on the second day, the morrow after the new moon, David's place was empty. And Saul said to Jonathan his son, "Why has not the son of Jesse come to the meal, either yesterday or today?" |
| 28 Jonathas répondit à Saül: Il m'a prié avec beaucoup d'instance d'agréer qu'il allât à Bethléem, | 28 Jonathan answered Saul, "David earnestly asked leave of me to go to Bethlehem; |
| 29 en me disant: Laisse-moi aller, je te prie, parce qu'il y a un sacrifice solennel dans notre ville, et l'un de mes frères est venu me chercher; si donc j'ai trouvé grâce à tes yeux, permets-moi d'y aller promptement pour voir mes frères. C'est pour cela qu'il n'est pas venu manger avec le roi. | 29 he said, Let me go; for our family holds a sacrifice in the city, and my brother has commanded me to be there. So now, if I have found favor in your eyes, let me get away, and see my brothers.' For this reason he has not come to the king's table." |
| 30 Alors Saül, s'irritant contre Jonathas, lui dit: Fils de femme prostituée, est-ce que j'ignore que tu aimes le fils d'Isaï à ta honte et à la honte de ta mère infâme? | 30 Then Saul's anger was kindled against Jonathan, and he said to him, "You son of a perverse, rebellious woman, do I not know that you have chosen the son of Jesse to your own shame, and to the shame of your mother's nakedness? |
| 31 Car tant que le fils d'Isaï vivra sur la terre, il n'y aura de sûreté, ni pour toi, ni pour ta royauté. Envoie-le donc chercher dès maintenant et amène-le-moi; car il faut qu'il meure. | 31 For as long as the son of Jesse lives upon the earth, neither you nor your kingdom shall be established. Therefore send and fetch him to me, for he shall surely die." |
| 32 Jonathas répondit à Saül son père: Pourquoi mourra-t-il? Qu'a-t-il fait? | 32 Then Jonathan answered Saul his father, "Why should he be put to death? What has he done?" |
| 33 Saül prit une lance pour l'en percer. Jonathas reconnut donc que son père était résolu de faire mourir David, | 33 But Saul cast his spear at him to smite him; so Jonathan knew that his father was determined to put David to death. |
| 34 et il se leva de table dans une violente colère, et ne mangea point ce second jour de la fête; car il était affligé à cause de David, parce que son père l'avait outragé. | 34 And Jonathan rose from the table in fierce anger and ate no food the second day of the month, for he was grieved for David, because his father had disgraced him. |
| 35 Le lendemain, dès le point du jour, Jonathas vint dans le champ, selon qu'il en était convenu avec David, et il amena avec lui un petit garçon, | 35 In the morning Jonathan went out into the field to the appointment with David, and with him a little lad. |
| 36 auquel il dit: Va, et rapporte-moi les flèches que je tirerai. L'enfant ayant couru, Jonathas tira une autre flèche plus loin. | 36 And he said to his lad, "Run and find the arrows which I shoot." As the lad ran, he shot an arrow beyond him. |
| 37 L'enfant étant donc venu au lieu où était la première flèche que Jonathas avait tirée, Jonathas cria derrière lui, et lui dit: Voilà que la flèche est au delà de toi. | 37 And when the lad came to the place of the arrow which Jonathan had shot, Jonathan called after the lad and said, "Is not the arrow beyond you?" |
| 38 Il lui cria encore, et il lui dit: Hâte-toi, ne t'arrête pas. L'enfant, ayant ramassé les flèches de Jonathas, les rapporta à son maître, | 38 And Jonathan called after the lad, "Hurry, make haste, stay not." So Jonathan's lad gathered up the arrows, and came to his master. |
| 39 sans rien comprendre à ce qui se passait; car Jonathas et David étaient seuls à le savoir. | 39 But the lad knew nothing; only Jonathan and David knew the matter. |
| 40 Jonathas donna ensuite ses armes à l'enfant, et lui dit: Va, reporte-les à la ville. | 40 And Jonathan gave his weapons to his lad, and said to him, "Go and carry them to the city." |
| 41 Quand l'enfant fut parti, David sortit du lieu où il était, qui regardait le midi; et, se baissant jusqu'à terre, il se prosterna trois fois; et s'embrassant, ils pleurèrent tous deux, mais David encore plus. | 41 And as soon as the lad had gone, David rose from beside the stone heap and fell on his face to the ground, and bowed three times; and they kissed one another, and wept with one another, until David recovered himself. |
| 42 Jonathas dit donc à David: Va en paix; que ce que nous avons juré tous deux au nom du Seigneur demeure ferme; et que le Seigneur, comme nous avons dit, en soit témoin entre toi et moi, et entre ta race et ma race à jamais. | 42 Then Jonathan said to David, "Go in peace, forasmuch as we have sworn both of us in the name of the LORD, saying, The LORD shall be between me and you, and between my descendants and your descendants, for ever.'" And he rose and departed; and Jonathan went into the city. |
| 43 Et David se leva et s'en alla, et Jonathas rentra dans la ville. | |
