| 1 Les enfants d'Israël firent encore le mal aux yeux du Seigneur, et Il les livra pendant sept ans entre les mains des Madianites. | 1 Then the sons of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord, who delivered them into the hand of Midian for seven years. |
| 2 Ce peuple les tint dans une si grande oppression, qu'ils furent obligés de se retirer dans les antres et dans les cavernes des montagnes, et dans les lieux les plus fortifiés propres à la résistance. | 2 And they were greatly oppressed by them. And they made for themselves hollows and caves in the mountains, and very fortified places for defense. |
| 3 Après que les Israélites avaient semé, les Madianites, les Amalécites et les autres peuples de l'orient venaient sur leurs terres, | 3 And when Israel had planted, Midian and Amalek, and the rest of the eastern nations ascended, |
| 4 y dressaient leurs tentes, ruinaient tous les grains en herbes jusqu'à l'entrée de Gaza, et ne laissaient aux Israélites rien de tout ce qui était nécessaire à la vie, ni brebis, ni boeufs, ni ânes. | 4 and pitching their tents among them, they laid waste to all that was planted, as far as the entrance to Gaza. And they left behind nothing at all to sustain life in Israel, neither sheep, nor oxen, nor donkeys. |
| 5 Car ils venaient avec tous leurs troupeaux et avec leurs tentes; et comme ils étaient une multitude innombrable d'hommes et de chameaux, semblables à un nuage de sauterelles, ils remplissaient tout et gâtaient tout par où ils passaient. | 5 For they and all their flocks arrived with their tents, and they filled all places like locusts, an innumerable multitude of men and camels, devastating whatever they touched. |
| 6 Israël fut donc extrêmement humilié sous Madian. | 6 And Israel was humbled greatly in the sight of Midian. |
| 7 Et ils crièrent au Seigneur, Lui demandant du secours contre les Madianites. | 7 And he cried out to the Lord, requesting assistance against the Midianites. |
| 8 Alors le Seigneur leur envoya un prophète, qui leur dit: Voici ce que dit le Seigneur, le Dieu d'Israël: Je vous ai fait sortir d'Egypte, et Je vous ai tirés d'un séjour de servitude; | 8 And he sent to them a man who was a prophet, and he said: “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: ‘I caused you to ascend from Egypt, and I led you away from the house of servitude. |
| 9 Je vous ai délivrés de la main des Egyptiens, et de tous les ennemis qui vous affligeaient; j'ai chassé les Amorrhéens de cette terre à votre entrée, et Je vous ai livré le pays qui était à eux. | 9 And I freed you from the hand of the Egyptians and from all of the enemies who were afflicting you. And I cast them out at your arrival, and I delivered their land to you. |
| 10 Et Je vous ai dit: Je suis le Seigneur votre Dieu. Ne craignez point les dieux des Amorrhéens dans le pays desquels vous habitez. Cependant vous n'avez point voulu écouter Ma voix. | 10 And I said: I am the Lord your God. You shall not fear the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you live. But you were not willing to listen to my voice.’ ” |
| 11 Or l'Ange du Seigneur vint S'asseoir sous un chêne qui était à Ephra, et qui appartenait à Joas, père de la famille d'Ezri. Et Gédéon, son fils, était occupé alors à battre le blé dans le pressoir et à le vanner, pour échapper aux Madianites. | 11 Then an Angel of the Lord arrived, and he sat under an oak tree, which was at Ophrah, and which belonged to Joash, the father of the family of Ezri. And while his son Gideon was threshing and cleaning the grain at the winepress, so that he might flee from Midian, |
| 12 L'Ange du Seigneur apparut donc à Gédéon, et lui dit: Le Seigneur est avec vous, ô le plus fort d'entre les hommes. | 12 the Angel of the Lord appeared to him, and he said: “The Lord is with you, most valiant of men.” |
| 13 Gédéon Lui répondit: D'où vient donc, mon seigneur, je vous prie, que tous ces maux sont tombés sur nous, si le Seigneur est avec nous? Où sont ses merveilles que nos pères nous ont rapportées, en nous disant: Le Seigneur nous a tirés de l'Egypte? Et maintenant le Seigneur nous a abandonnés, et nous a livrés entre les mains des Madianites. | 13 And Gideon said to him: “I beg you, my lord, if the Lord is with us, why have these things happened to us? Where are his miracles, which our fathers described when they said, ‘The Lord led us away from Egypt.’ But now the Lord has forsaken us, and he has delivered us into the hand of Midian.” |
| 14 Alors le Seigneur, le regardant, lui dit: allez, avec cette force dont vous étes rempli, et vous délivrerez Israël de la puissance des Madianites. Sachez que c'est Moi qui vous ai envoyé. | 14 And the Lord looked down upon him, and he said: “Go forth with this, your strength, and you shall free Israel from the hand of Midian. Know that I have sent you.” |
| 15 Gédéon lui répondit: Hélas! mon Seigneur, comment, je vous prie, délivrerais-je Israël? Vous savez que ma famille est la dernière de Manassé, et que je suis le dernier dans la maison de mon père. | 15 And responding, he said: “I beg you, my lord, with what shall I free Israel? Behold, my family is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in the house of my father.” |
| 16 Le Seigneur lui dit: Je serai avec vous, et vous battrez les Madianites, comme s'ils n'étaient qu'un seul homme. | 16 And the Lord said to him: “I will be with you. And so, you shall cut down Midian as if one man.” |
| 17 Sur quoi Gédéon repartit: Si j'ai trouvé grâce devant Vous, faites-moi connaître par un signe que c'est Vous qui me parlez. | 17 And he said: “If I have found grace before you, give me a sign that it is you who is speaking to me. |
| 18 Et ne Vous retirez point d'ici jusqu'à ce que je revienne auprès de Vous, et que j'apporte un sacrifice pour Vous l'offrir. L'Ange lui répondit: J'attendrai votre retour. | 18 And may you not withdraw from here, until I return to you, carrying a sacrifice and offering it to you.” And he responded, “I will wait for your return.” |
| 19 Gédéon, étant donc entré chez lui, fit cuire un chevreau, et fit d'une mesure de farine des pains sans levain; et ayant mis la viande dans une corbeille et le jus de la viande dans un pot, il apporta le tout sous le chêne, et il Le lui offrit. | 19 And so Gideon entered, and he boiled a goat, and he made unleavened bread from a measure of flour. And setting the flesh in a basket, and putting the broth of the flesh in a pot, he took it all under the oak tree, and he offered it to him. |
| 20 L'Ange du Seigneur lui dit: Prenez la viande et les pains sans levain, mettez-les sur cette pierre, et versez dessus le jus de viande. Ce que Gédéon ayant fait, | 20 And the Angel of the Lord said to him, “Take the flesh and the unleavened bread, and place them on that rock, and pour out the broth upon it.” And when he had done so, |
| 21 l'Ange du Seigneur étendit le bout du bâton qu'Il tenait dans Sa main, et en toucha la viande et les pains sans levain; et aussitôt il sortit de la pierre un feu qui consuma la viande et les pains sans levain; et en même temps l'Ange du Seigneur disparut de devant ses yeux. | 21 the Angel of the Lord extended the end of a staff, which he was holding in his hand, and he touched the flesh and the unleavened loaves. And a fire ascended from the rock, and it consumed the flesh and the unleavened loaves. Then the Angel of the Lord vanished from his sight. |
| 22 Gédéon, voyant que c'était l'Ange du Seigneur, s'écria: Hélas! Seigneur mon Dieu, j'ai vu l'Ange du Seigneur face à face. | 22 And Gideon, realizing that it had been the Angel of the Lord, said: “Alas, my Lord God! For I have seen the Angel of the Lord face to face.” |
| 23 Le Seigneur lui dit: La paix soit avec vous. Ne craignez point: vous ne mourrez pas. | 23 And the Lord said to him: “Peace be with you. Do not be afraid; you shall not die.” |
| 24 Gédéon éleva donc en ce même lieu un autel au Seigneur, et l'appela La paix du Seigneur; nom qu'il garde encore aujourd'hui. Et lorsqu'il était encore à Ephra, qui appartient à la famille d'Ezri, | 24 Therefore, Gideon built an altar to the Lord there, and he called it, the Peace of the Lord, even to the present day. And while he was still at Ophrah, which is of the family of Ezri, |
| 25 le Seigneur lui dit la nuit suivante: Prenez un taureau de votre père, et un autre taureau de sept ans, et renversez l'autel de Baal qui appartient à votre père, et coupez le bois qui est autour de l'autel. | 25 that night, the Lord said to him: “Take a bull of your father’s, and another bull of seven years, and you shall destroy the altar of Baal, which is your father’s. And you shall cut down the sacred grove which is around the altar. |
| 26 Dressez aussi un autel au Seigneur votre Dieu sur le haut de cette pierre, sur laquelle vous avez offert votre sacrifice, et prenez le second taureau, que vous offrirez en holocauste sur un bûcher fait de branches d'arbres que vous aurez coupées de ce bois. | 26 And you shall build an altar to the Lord your God, at the summit of this rock, on which you placed the sacrifice before. And you shall take the second bull, and you shall offer a holocaust upon a pile of the wood, which you shall cut down from the grove.” |
| 27 Gédéon, ayant donc pris dix de ses serviteurs, fit ce que le Seigneur lui avait commandé. Il ne voulut pas néanmoins le faire de jour, parce qu'il craignait ceux de la maison de son père, et les hommes de cette ville-là; mais il fit tout pendant la nuit. | 27 Therefore, Gideon, taking ten men from his servants, did just as the Lord had instructed him. But fearing his father’s household, and the men of that city, he was not willing to do it by day. Instead, he completed everything by night. |
| 28 Et les habitants de cette ville, étant venus le matin, virent l'autel de Baal détruit, le bois coupé, et le second taureau mis sur l'autel qui venait d'être élevé. | 28 And when the men of that town had risen up in the morning, they saw the altar of Baal destroyed, and the sacred grove cut down, and the second bull set upon the altar, which then had been built. |
| 29 Alors ils se dirent les uns aux autres: Qui est-ce qui a fait cela? Et comme ils cherchaient partout quel était l'auteur de cette action, on leur dit: C'est Gédéon, fils de Joas; qui a fait toutes ces choses. | 29 And they said one to another, “Who has done this?” And when they inquired everywhere as to the author of the deed, it was said, “Gideon, the son of Joash, did all these things.” |
| 30 Ils dirent donc à Joas: Faites venir ici votre fils, afin qu'il meure; parce qu'il a détruit l'autel de Baal, et qu'il en a coupé le bois. | 30 And they said to Joash: “Bring forward your son here, so that he may die. For he has destroyed the altar of Baal, and he has cut down the sacred grove.” |
| 31 Joas répondit: Est-ce à vous de venger Baal et de combattre pour lui? Que celui qui est son ennemi meure avant que le jour de demain soit venu. Si Baal est Dieu, qu'il se venge de celui qui a détruit son autel. | 31 But he responded to them: “Could you be the avengers of Baal, so that you fight on his behalf? Whoever is his adversary, let him die before the light arrives tomorrow; if he is a god, let him vindicate himself against him who has overturned his altar.” |
| 32 Depuis ce jour Gédéon fut appelé Jérobaal, à cause de cette parole que Joas avait dite: Que Baal se venge de celui qui a renversé son autel. | 32 From that day, Gideon was called Jerubbaal, because Joash had said, “Let Baal avenge himself against him who has overturned his altar.” |
| 33 Cependant tous les Madianites, les Amalécites et les peuples d'Orient se joignirent ensemble; et ayant passé le Jourdain, ils vinrent camper dans la vallée de Jezraël. | 33 And so, all of Midian, and Amalek, and the eastern peoples were gathered together. And crossing the Jordan, they encamped in the valley of Jezreel. |
| 34 En même temps l'esprit du Seigneur revêtit Gédéon, qui, sonnant de la trompette, assembla toute la maison d'Abiézer, afin qu'elle le suivit. | 34 But the Spirit of the Lord entered Gideon, who, sounding the trumpet, summoned the house of Abiezer so that he might follow him. |
| 35 Il envoya aussi des courriers dans toute la tribu de Manassé, qui le suivit aussi, et il en envoya d'autres dans les tribus d'Aser, de Zabulon et de Nephthali; et les hommes de ces tribus vinrent au-devant de lui. | 35 And he sent messengers into all of Manasseh, who also followed him, and other messengers into Asher, and Zebulun, and Naphtali, who went to meet him. |
| 36 Alors Gédéon dit à Dieu: Si Vous voulez Vous servir de ma main pour sauver Israël, comme Vous l'avez dit, | 36 And Gideon said to God: “If you will save Israel by my hand, just as you have said: |
| 37 je mettrai dans l'aire cette toison; et si, toute la terre demeurant sèche, la rosée ne tombe que sur la toison, je reconnaîtrai par là que Vous Vous servirez de ma main, selon que Vous l'avez promis, pour délivrer Israël. | 37 I will set this wool fleece on the threshing floor. If there will be dew only on the fleece, and all the ground is dry, I will know that by my hand, as you have said, you will free Israel.” |
| 38 Ce que Gédéon avait proposé arriva. Car, s'étant levé de grand matin, il pressa la toison, et remplit une coupe de la rosée qui en sortit. | 38 And so it was done. And rising in the night, wringing out the fleece, he filled a vessel with the dew. |
| 39 Gédéon dit encore à Dieu: Que Votre colère ne s'allume pas contre moi, si je fais encore une fois une épreuve, en demandant un second signe dans la toison. Je vous prie, Seigneur, que toute la terre soit trempée de rosée, et que la toison seule demeure sèche. | 39 And again he said to God: “Let not your fury be enkindled against me, if I test once more, seeking a sign in the fleece. I pray that only the fleece may be dry, and all the ground may be wet with dew.” |
| 40 Le Seigneur fit cette nuit-là même ce que Gédéon avait demandé. La rosée tomba sur toute la terre, et la toison seule demeura sèche. | 40 And that night, God did as he had requested. And it was dry only on the fleece, and there was dew on all the ground. |
