| 1 C'est pourquoi, laissant les éléments de ce qu'il y a à dire sur le Christ, élevons-nous à ce qui est plus parfait, sans poser de nouveau les principes fondamentaux de la pénitence pour les oeuvres mortes, de la foi en Dieu, | 1 Therefore, interrupting an explanation of the basics of Christ, let us consider what is more advanced, not presenting again the fundamentals of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God, |
| 2 de ce qu'on enseigne touchant les baptêmes, et aussi l'imposition des mains, la résurrection des morts, et le jugement éternel. | 2 of the doctrine of baptism, and also of the imposition of hands, and of the resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment. |
| 3 Et c'est ce que nous ferons, si toutefois Dieu le permet. | 3 And we shall do this, if indeed God permits it. |
| 4 Car il est impossible que ceux qui ont été une fois éclairés, qui ont goûté le don céleste, qui ont été rendus participants de l'Esprit-Saint, | 4 For it is impossible for those who were once illuminated, and have even tasted of the heavenly gift, and have become sharers in the Holy Spirit, |
| 5 qui ont également goûté la bonne parole de Dieu et les vertus du siècle à venir, | 5 who, despite having tasted the good Word of God and the virtues of the future age, have yet fallen away, |
| 6 et qui sont tombés soient renouvelés et ramenés à la pénitence, eux qui crucifient de nouveau pour leur malheur le Fils de Dieu, et Le livrent à l'ignominie. | 6 to be renewed again to penance, since they are crucifying again in themselves the Son of God and are still maintaining pretenses. |
| 7 Car une terre abreuvée par la pluie qui vient souvent sur elle, et qui produit une herbe utile à ceux qui la cultivent, reçoit la bénédiction de Dieu. | 7 For the earth accepts a blessing from God, by drinking in the rain that often falls upon it, and by producing plants that are useful to those by whom it is cultivated. |
| 8 Mais si elle produit des épines et des chardons, elle est réprouvée, et bien près d'être maudite; sa fin sera la combustion. | 8 But whatever brings forth thorns and briers is rejected, and is closest to what is accursed; their consummation is in combustion. |
| 9 Cependant nous espérons pour vous, bien-aimés, des choses meilleures et plus rapprochées du salut, quoique nous parlions ainsi. | 9 But from you, most beloved, we are confident that there will be things better and closer to salvation; even though we speak in this way. |
| 10 Car Dieu n'est pas injuste, pour oublier vos oeuvres et l'amour que vous avez témoigné en Son nom, ayant rendu et rendant encore des services aux saints. | 10 For God is not unjust, such that he would forget your work and the love that you have shown in his name. For you have ministered, and you continue to minister, to the saints. |
| 11 Maix nous désirons que chacun de vous fasse paraître le même zèle à conserver votre espérance entière jusqu'à la fin, | 11 Yet we desire that each one of you display the same solicitude toward the fulfillment of hope, even unto the end, |
| 12 de sorte que vous ne vous relâchiez point, mais que vous deveniez les imitateurs de ceux qui, par la foi et la patience, hériteront des promesses. | 12 so that you may not be slow to act, but instead may be imitators of those who, through faith and patience, shall inherit the promises. |
| 13 Lorsque Dieu fit la promesse à Abraham, n'ayant pas de plus grand que Lui par qui Il pût jurer, Il jura par Lui-même, | 13 For God, in making promises to Abraham, swore by himself, (because he had no one greater by whom he might swear), |
| 14 et Il dit: Oui, Je te bénirai abondamment, et Je multiplierai ta postérité. | 14 saying: “Blessing, I shall bless you, and multiplying, I shall multiply you.” |
| 15 Et ainsi Abraham, ayant attendu avec patience, obtint l'effet de la promesse. | 15 And in this way, by enduring patiently, he secured the promise. |
| 16 Car les hommes jurent par Celui qui est plus grand qu'eux, et le serment, qui sert de garantie, met fin à tous leurs différends. | 16 For men swear by what is greater than themselves, and an oath as confirmation is the end of all their controversy. |
| 17 C'est pourquoi Dieu, voulant montrer avec plus d'évidence aux héritiers de la promesse le caractère immuable de Sa résolution, fit intervenir le serment, | 17 In this matter, God, wanting to reveal more thoroughly the immutability of his counsel to the heirs of the promise, interposed an oath, |
| 18 afin que par deux choses immuables, dans lesquelles il est impossible que Dieu mente, nous ayons une très forte consolation, nous qui avons mis notre refuge dans l'acquisition des biens qui nous sont proposés par l'espérance. | 18 so that by two immutable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we may have the strongest solace: we who have fled together so as to hold fast to the hope set before us. |
| 19 Cette espérance, nous la gardons comme l'ancre solide et ferme de notre âme; elle pénètre jusqu'au dedans du voile, | 19 This we have as an anchor of the soul, safe and sound, which advances even to the interior of the veil, |
| 20 où Jésus, comme précurseur, est entré pour nous, ayant été fait pontife pour l'éternité, selon l'ordre de Melchisédech. | 20 to the place where the forerunner Jesus has entered on our behalf, so as to become the High Priest for eternity, according to the order of Melchizedek. |
