| 1 A la nouvelle de ces événements, tous les rois d'au delà du Jourdain, qui demeuraient dans les montagnes et dans les plaines, dans les lieux maritimes et sur le rivage de la grande mer, et ceux qui habitaient près du Liban, les Héthéens, les Amorrhéens, les Chananéens, les Phérézéens, les Hévéens et les Jébuséens, | 1 When the news reached the kings west of the Jordan, in the mountain regions and in the foothills, and all along the coast of the Great Sea as far as Lebanon: Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites, |
| 2 s'unirent tous ensemble pour combattre contre Josué et contre Israël, d'un même coeur et d'un même esprit. | 2 they all formed an alliance to launch a common attack against Joshua and Israel. |
| 3 Mais les habitants de Gabaon ayant appris tout ce que Josué avait fait à Jéricho et à la ville d'Haï, | 3 On learning what Joshua had done to Jericho and Ai, the inhabitants of Gibeon |
| 4 et usant d'adresse, prirent des vivres avec eux, et mirent de vieux sacs sur leurs ânes, des outres pour mettre le vin, toutes rompues et recousues, | 4 put into effect a device of their own. They chose provisions for a journey, making use of old sacks for their asses, and old wineskins, torn and mended. |
| 5 de vieux souliers rapiécés pour les faire paraître encore plus vieux; ils étaient aussi couverts de vieux habits; et les pains qu'ils portaient pour leur nourriture durant le chemin étaient fort durs, et rompus par morceaux. | 5 They wore old, patched sandals and shabby garments; and all the bread they took was dry and crumbly. |
| 6 Ils se présentèrent dans cet état à Josué, qui était alors dans le camp de Galgala, et ils lui dirent, ainsi qu'à tout Israël: Nous venons d'un pays très éloigné, dans le désir de faire la paix avec vous. Les enfants d'Israël leur répondirent: | 6 Thus they journeyed to Joshua in the camp at Gilgal, where they said to him and to the men of Israel, "We have come from a distant land to propose that you make an alliance with us." |
| 7 Peut-être demeurez-vous dans ce pays-ci, qui nous a été réservé comme notre partage, et dans ce cas nous ne pourrions faire alliance avec vous. | 7 But the men of Israel replied to the Hivites, "You may be living in land that is ours. How, then, can we make an alliance with you?" |
| 8 Mais ils dirent à Josué: Nous sommes vos serviteurs. Qui êtes-vous, leur dit Josué, et d'où venez-vous? | 8 But they answered Joshua, "We are your servants." Then Joshua asked them, "Who are you? Where do you come from?" |
| 9 Ils lui répondirent: Vos serviteurs sont venus d'un pays très éloigné, au nom du Seigneur votre Dieu. Car le bruit de Sa puissance est venu jusqu'à nous; nous avons été informés de toutes les choses qu'Il a faites en Egypte, | 9 They answered him, "Your servants have come from a far-off land, because of the fame of the LORD, your God. For we have heard reports of all that he did in Egypt |
| 10 et de quelle manière Il a traité les deux rois des Amorrhéens qui étaient au delà du Jourdain: Séhon, roi d'Hésébon, et Og, roi de Basan, qui était à Astaroth. | 10 and all that he did to the two kings of the Amorites beyond the Jordan, Sihon, king of Heshbon, and Og, king of Bashan, who lived in Ashtaroth. |
| 11 Nos anciens et tous les habitants de notre pays nous ont dit: Prenez avec vous des vivres pour un si long voyage, et allez au-devant d'eux, et dites-leur: Nous sommes vos serviteurs; faites alliance avec nous. | 11 So our elders and all the inhabitants of our country said to us, 'Take along provisions for the journey and go to meet them. Say to them: We are your servants; we propose that you make an alliance with us.' |
| 12 Voilà les pains que nous avons pris tout chauds quand nous partîmes de chez nous pour venir vous trouver; et maintenant ils sont tout secs, et ils le rompent en pièces tant ils sont vieux. | 12 This bread of ours was still warm when we brought it from home as provisions the day we left to come to you, but now it is dry and crumbled. |
| 13 Ces outres étaient neuves quand nous les avons remplies de vin, et maintenant elles sont toutes rompues; nos habits et les souliers que nous avons aux pieds se sont tout usés dans un si long voyage, et ils ne valent plus rien. | 13 Here are our wineskins, which were new when we filled them, but now they are torn. Look at our garments and sandals, which are worn out from the very long journey." |
| 14 Les notables d'Israël prirent donc de leurs vivres, et ils ne consultèrent point le Seigneur. | 14 Then the Israelite princes partook of their provisions, without seeking the advice of the LORD. |
| 15 Et Josué, ayant pour eux des pensées de paix, fit alliance avec eux; il leur promit qu'on leur sauverait la vie: ce que les princes du peuple leur jurèrent aussi. | 15 So Joshua made an alliance with them and entered into an agreement to spare them, which the princes of the community sealed with an oath. |
| 16 Mais, trois jours après que l'alliance eut été faite, ils apprirent que ces peuples habitaient dans le pays voisin, et qu'ils allaient entrer sur leurs terres. | 16 Three days after the agreement was entered into, the Israelites learned that these people were from nearby, and would be living in Israel. |
| 17 Et les enfants d'Israël, ayant décampé, vinrent trois jours plus tard dans les villes des Gabaonites, dont voici les noms: Gabaon, Caphira, Béroth, et Cariathiarim. | 17 The third day on the road, the Israelites came to their cities of Gibeon, Chephirah, Beeroth and Kiriath-jearim, |
| 18 Cependant ils ne les tuèrent point, parce que les princes du peuple avaient juré l'alliance avec eux au nom du Seigneur Dieu d'Israël. Mais tout le peuple murmura contre les princes; | 18 but did not attack them, because the princes of the community had sworn to them by the LORD, the God of Israel. When the entire community grumbled against the princes, |
| 19 et les princes leur répondirent: Nous leur avons juré au nom du Seigneur Dieu d'Israël. Ainsi nous ne pouvons leur faire aucun mal. | 19 these all remonstrated with the people, "We have sworn to them by the LORD, the God of Israel, and so we cannot harm them. |
| 20 Mais voici comment nous les traiterons: ils auront, à la vérité, la vie sauve, de peur que la colère du Seigneur ne s'élève contre nous si nous nous parjurons; | 20 Let us therefore spare their lives and so deal with them that we shall not be punished for the oath we have sworn to them." |
| 21 mais ils vivront de telle sorte, qu'ils seront employés à couper du bois et à porter de l'eau pour le service de tout le peuple. Lorsque les princes parlaient ainsi, | 21 Thus the princes recommended that they be let live, as hewers of wood and drawers of water for the entire community; and the community did as the princes advised them. |
| 22 Josué appela les Gabaonites, et leur dit: Pourquoi avez-vous voulu nous surprendre par votre mensonge, en disant: Nous demeurons fort loin de vous, puisqu'au contraire vous êtes au milieu de nous? | 22 Joshua summoned the Gibeonites and said to them, "Why did you lie to us and say that you lived at a great distance from us, when you will be living in our very midst? |
| 23 C'est pour cela que vous serez sous la malédiction de la servitude, et qu'il y aura toujours dans votre race des gens qui couperont le bois, et qui porteront l'eau dans la maison de mon Dieu. | 23 For this are you accursed: every one of you shall always be a slave (hewers of wood and drawers of water) for the house of my God." |
| 24 Ils lui répondirent: Le bruit était venu jusqu'à nous, qui sommes vos serviteurs, que le Seigneur votre Dieu avait promis à Moïse Son serviteur de vous donner tout ce pays, et d'en exterminer tous les habitants; ce qui nous jeta dans une grande crainte, et nous obligea, par la terreur dont nous nous trouvâmes frappés, à former ce dessein pour mettre nos vies en sûreté. | 24 They answered Joshua, "Your servants were fully informed of how the LORD, your God, commanded his servant Moses that you be given the entire land and that all its inhabitants be destroyed before you. Since, therefore, at your advance, we were in great fear for our lives, we acted as we did. |
| 25 Mais maintenant nous sommes dans votre main; faites de nous tout ce que vous jugerez bon et selon l'équité. | 25 And now that we are in your power, do with us what you think fit and right." |
| 26 Josué fit donc ce qu'il avait dit, et il les délivra des mains des enfants d'Israël, en ne permettant pas qu'on les tuât. | 26 Joshua did what he had decided: while he saved them from being killed by the Israelites, |
| 27 Et il arrêta dès ce jour-là qu'ils seraient employés au service de tout le peuple et de l'autel du Seigneur, coupant le bois et portant l'eau au lieu que le Seigneur aurait choisi, comme ils font encore jusqu'à présent. | 27 at the same time he made them, as they still are, hewers of wood and drawers of water for the community and for the altar of the LORD, in the place of the LORD'S choice. |
