| 1 Voici les paroles que Moïse adressa à tout Israël au deçà du Jourdain, dans la plaine du désert, vis-à-vis de la mer Rouge, entre Pharan et Thophel, Laban et Haseroth, où il y a beaucoup d'or. | 1 These be the words which Moses spake unto all Israel on this side Jordan in the wilderness, in the plain over against the Red sea, between Paran, and Tophel, and Laban, and Hazeroth, and Dizahab. |
| 2 Il y avait onze journées de chemin depuis l'Horeb jusqu'à Cadèsbarné, par la montagne de Séir. | 2 (There are eleven days' journey from Horeb by the way of mount Seir unto Kadesh-barnea.) |
| 3 En la quarantième année depuis la sortie d'Egypte, le premier jour du onzième mois, Moïse dit aux enfants d'Israël tout ce que le Seigneur lui avait ordonné de leur dire; | 3 And it came to pass in the fortieth year, in the eleventh month, on the first day of the month, that Moses spake unto the children of Israel, according unto all that the LORD had given him in commandment unto them; |
| 4 après la défaite de Séhon, roi des Amorrhéens, qui habitait à Hésébon, et d'Og, roi de Basan, qui demeurait à Astaroth et à Edraï, | 4 After he had slain Sihon the king of the Amorites, which dwelt in Heshbon, and Og the king of Bashan, which dwelt at Astaroth in Edrei: |
| 5 les Israélites étant au deçà du Jourdain, dans le pays de Moab. Et il commença à leur expliquer la loi, et à leur dire: | 5 On this side Jordan, in the land of Moab, began Moses to declare this law, saying, |
| 6 Le Seigneur notre Dieu nous parla sur l'Horeb, et Il nous dit: Vous êtes assez restés près de cette montagne; | 6 The LORD our God spake unto us in Horeb, saying, Ye have dwelt long enough in this mount: |
| 7 mettez-vous en chemin, et venez vers la montagne des Amorrhéens, et dans tous les lieux voisins: dans les campagnes, les montagnes et les vallées vers le midi et le long de la côte de la mer; passez dans le pays des Chananéens et du Liban, jusqu'au grand fleuve de l'Euphrate. | 7 Turn you, and take your journey, and go to the mount of the Amorites, and unto all the places nigh thereunto, in the plain, in the hills, and in the vale, and in the south, and by the sea side, to the land of the Canaanites, and unto Lebanon, unto the great river, the river Euphrates. |
| 8 Voilà, dit-Il, que Je vous ai livré ce pays: entrez-y et mettez-vous en possession de la terre que le Seigneur avait promis avec serment de donner à vos pères, Abraham, Isaac et Jacob, et à leur postérité après eux. | 8 Behold, I have set the land before you: go in and possess the land which the LORD sware unto your fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to give unto them and to their seed after them. |
| 9 Et moi en ce même temps je vous dis: | 9 And I spake unto you at that time, saying, I am not able to bear you myself alone: |
| 10 Je ne puis seul vous porter, parce que le Seigneur votre Dieu vous a tellement multipliés, que vous êtes aujourd'hui comme les étoiles du ciel. | 10 The LORD your God hath multiplied you, and, behold, ye are this day as the stars of heaven for multitude. |
| 11 (Que le Seigneur, le Dieu de vos pères, ajoute encore à ce nombre plusieurs milliers, et qu'Il vous bénisse selon qu'Il l'a promis.) | 11 (The LORD God of your fathers make you a thousand times so many more as ye are, and bless you, as he hath promised you!) |
| 12 Je ne puis porter seul le poids de vos affaires et de vos différends. | 12 How can I myself alone bear your cumbrance, and your burden, and your strife? |
| 13 Choisissez d'entre vous des hommes sages et habiles, qui soient d'une vie exemplaire et d'une probité reconnue parmi vos tribus, afin que je les établisse pour être vos juges et vos chefs. | 13 Take you wise men, and understanding, and known among your tribes, and I will make them rulers over you. |
| 14 Vous me répondîtes alors: C'est une excellente chose que vous voulez faire. | 14 And ye answered me, and said, The thing which thou hast spoken is good for us to do. |
| 15 Et je pris dans vos tribus des hommes sages et nobles, et je les établis pour être vos princes, vos tribuns, vos chefs de cent hommes, de cinquante et de dix, pour vous instruire de toutes choses. | 15 So I took the chief of your tribes, wise men, and known, and made them heads over you, captains over thousands, and captains over hundreds, and captains over fifties, and captains over tens, and officers among your tribes. |
| 16 Je leur donnai cet avis en même temps, et je leur dis: Ecoutez ceux qui viendront à vous, citoyens ou étrangers, et jugez-les selon la justice. | 16 And I charged your judges at that time, saying, Hear the causes between your brethren, and judge righteously between every man and his brother, and the stranger that is with him. |
| 17 Vous ne mettrez aucune différence entre les personnes; vous écouterez le petit comme le grand, et vous n'aurez aucun égard à la condition de qui que ce soit, parce que le jugement appartient à Dieu. Si vous trouvez quelque chose de plus difficile, vous me le rapporterez, et je l'écouterai. | 17 Ye shall not respect persons in judgment; but ye shall hear the small as well as the great; ye shall not be afraid of the face of man; for the judgment is God's: and the cause that is too hard for you, bring it unto me, and I will hear it. |
| 18 Et je vous ordonnai alors tout ce que vous deviez faire. | 18 And I commanded you at that time all the things which ye should do. |
| 19 Ayant quitté l'Horeb, nous passâmes par ce grand et effroyable désert que vous avez vu, par le chemin qui conduit à la montagne des Amorrhéens, selon que le Seigneur notre Dieu nous l'avait commandé. Et étant venus à Cadèsbarné, | 19 And when we departed from Horeb, we went through all that great and terrible wilderness, which ye saw by the way of the mountain of the Amorites, as the LORD our God commanded us; and we came to Kadesh-barnea. |
| 20 je vous dis: Vous voilà arrivés vers la montagne des Amorrhéens, que le Seigneur notre Dieu doit nous donner. | 20 And I said unto you, Ye are come unto the mountain of the Amorites, which the LORD our God doth give unto us. |
| 21 Considérez la terre que le Seigneur votre Dieu vous donne; montez-y, et rendez-vous-en maîtres, selon que le Seigneur notre Dieu l'a promise à vos pères; ne craignez point, et que rien ne vous étonne. | 21 Behold, the LORD thy God hath set the land before thee: go up and possess it, as the LORD God of thy fathers hath said unto thee; fear not, neither be discouraged. |
| 22 Alors vous vîntes tous me trouver, et vous me dîtes: Envoyons des hommes qui explorent le pays, et qui nous marquent le chemin par où nous devons entrer, et les villes où nous devons aller. | 22 And ye came near unto me every one of you, and said, We will send men before us, and they shall search us out the land, and bring us word again by what way we must go up, and into what cities we shall come. |
| 23 Ayant approuvé cet avis, j'envoyai douze hommes d'entre vous, un de chaque tribu, | 23 And the saying pleased me well: and I took twelve men of you, one of a tribe: |
| 24 qui, s'étant mis en route, et ayant passé les montagnes, vinrent jusqu'à la vallée de la Grappe de raisin; et, après avoir exploré le pays, | 24 And they turned and went up into the mountain, and came unto the valley of Eshcol, and searched it out. |
| 25 ils prirent des fruits qu'il produit, pour nous faire voir combien il était fertile; et nous les ayant apportés, ils nous dirent: La terre que le Seigneur notre Dieu veut nous donner est très bonne. | 25 And they took of the fruit of the land in their hands, and brought it down unto us, and brought us word again, and said, It is a good land which the LORD our God doth give us. |
| 26 Mais vous ne voulûtes point y aller; et étant incrédules à la parole du Seigneur notre Dieu, | 26 Notwithstanding ye would not go up, but rebelled against the commandment of the LORD your God: |
| 27 vous murmurâtes dans vos tentes, en disant: Le Seigneur nous hait, et Il nous a fait sortir de l'Egypte pour nous livrer entre les mains des Amorrhéens, et pour nous exterminer. | 27 And ye murmured in your tents, and said, Because the LORD hated us, he hath brought us forth out of the land of Egypt, to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us. |
| 28 Où monterons-nous? Ceux que nous avons envoyés nous ont jeté l'épouvante dans le coeur, en nous disant: Ce pays est extrêmement peuplé; les hommes y sont d'une taille beaucoup plus haute que nous; leurs villes sont grandes et fortifiées de murs qui vont jusqu'au ciel; nous avons vu là des gens de la race d'Enac. | 28 Whither shall we go up? our brethren have discouraged our heart, saying, The people is greater and taller than we; the cities are great and walled up to heaven; and moreover we have seen the sons of the Anakims there. |
| 29 Et je vous dis alors: N'ayez pas peur, et ne les craignez point. | 29 Then I said unto you, Dread not, neither be afraid of them. |
| 30 Le Seigneur votre Dieu, qui est votre guide, combattra Lui-même pour vous, ainsi qu'Il a fait en Egypte à la vue de tous les peuples. | 30 The LORD your God which goeth before you, he shall fight for you, according to all that he did for you in Egypt before your eyes; |
| 31 Et vous avez vu vous-mêmes dans ce désert que le Seigneur votre Dieu vous a portés dans tout le chemin par où vous avez passé, comme un homme a coutume de porter son petit enfant entre ses bras, jusqu'à ce que vous soyez arrivés en ce lieu. | 31 And in the wilderness, where thou hast seen how that the LORD thy God bare thee, as a man doth bear his son, in all the way that ye went, until ye came into this place. |
| 32 Mais tout ce que je vous dis alors ne put vous engager à croire au Seigneur votre Dieu, | 32 Yet in this thing ye did not believe the LORD your God, |
| 33 qui a marché devant vous le long du chemin, qui vous a marqué le lieu où vous deviez dresser vos tentes, qui vous a montré le chemin, la nuit par la colonne de feu, et le jour par la colonne de nuée. | 33 Who went in the way before you, to search you out a place to pitch your tents in, in fire by night, to shew you by what way ye should go, and in a cloud by day. |
| 34 Le Seigneur, ayant donc entendu vos murmures, S'irrita et dit avec serment: | 34 And the LORD heard the voice of your words, and was wroth, and sware, saying, |
| 35 Nul des hommes de cette race criminelle ne verra l'excellente terre que J'avais juré de donner un jour à vos pères; | 35 Surely there shall not one of these men of this evil generation see that good land, which I sware to give unto your fathers, |
| 36 excepté Caleb, fils de Jéphoné. Car celui-là la verra, et Je lui donnerai, à lui et à ses enfants, la terre où il a marché, parce qu'il a suivi le Seigneur. | 36 Save Caleb the son of Jephunneh; he shall see it, and to him will I give the land that he hath trodden upon, and to his children, because he hath wholly followed the LORD. |
| 37 Et on ne doit pas s'étonner de cette indignation du Seigneur contre le peuple, puisque, S'étant irrité contre moi-même à cause de vous, Il me dit: Vous non plus, vous n'y entrerez point; | 37 Also the LORD was angry with me for your sakes, saying, Thou also shalt not go in thither. |
| 38 mais Josué, fils de Nun, votre ministre, y entrera à votre place. Exhortez-le et fortifiez-le, car ce sera lui qui divisera la terre par le sort à tout Israël. | 38 But Joshua the son of Nun, which standeth before thee, he shall go in thither: encourage him: for he shall cause Israel to inherit it. |
| 39 Vos petits enfants, dont vous avez dit qu'ils seraient emmenés captifs, et vos enfants, qui ne savent pas encore discerner le bien et le mal, seront ceux qui entreront dans cette terre. Je la leur donnerai, et ils la posséderont. | 39 Moreover your little ones, which ye said should be a prey, and your children, which in that day had no knowledge between good and evil, they shall go in thither, and unto them will I give it, and they shall possess it. |
| 40 Mais pour vous, retournez, et allez-vous-en dans le désert par le chemin qui conduit vers la mer Rouge. | 40 But as for you, turn you, and take your journey into the wilderness by the way of the Red sea. |
| 41 Vous me répondîtes alors: Nous avons péché contre le Seigneur. Nous monterons, et nous combattrons comme le Seigneur notre Dieu nous l'a ordonné. Et lorsque vous marchiez les armes à la main vers la montagne, | 41 Then ye answered and said unto me, We have sinned against the LORD, we will go up and fight, according to all that the LORD our God commanded us. And when ye had girded on every man his weapons of war, ye were ready to go up into the hill. |
| 42 le Seigneur me dit: Dites-leur: N'entreprenez point de monter et de combattre, parce que Je ne suis pas avec vous, et que vous succomberez devant vos ennemis. | 42 And the LORD said unto me, Say unto them, Go not up, neither fight; for I am not among you; lest ye be smitten before your enemies. |
| 43 Je vous le dis, et vous ne m'écoutâtes point; mais, vous opposant au commandement du Seigneur, et étant enflés d'orgueil, vous montâtes sur la montagne. | 43 So I spake unto you; and ye would not hear, but rebelled against the commandment of the LORD, and went presumptuously up into the hill. |
| 44 Alors les Amorrhéens qui habitaient sur les montagnes ayant paru, et étant venus au-devant de vous, vous poursuivirent comme les abeilles poursuivent celui qui les irrite, et vous taillèrent en pièces depuis Séïr jusqu'à Horma. | 44 And the Amorites, which dwelt in that mountain, came out against you, and chased you, as bees do, and destroyed you in Seir, even unto Hormah. |
| 45 A votre retour, vous vous mîtes à pleurer devant le Seigneur; mais Il ne vous écouta point, et Il ne voulut point Se rendre à vos prières. | 45 And ye returned and wept before the LORD; but the LORD would not hearken to your voice, nor give ear unto you. |
| 46 Ainsi vous demeurâtes longtemps à Cadèsbarné. | 46 So ye abode in Kadesh many days, according unto the days that ye abode there. |
