| 2 Et comme Il sortait de la barque, tout à coup vint à Lui, sortant des sépulcres, un homme possédé d'un esprit impur, | 2 and when he disembarked, a man with an unclean spirit at once came out from the tombs towards him. |
| 3 qui avait sa demeure dans les sépulcres. Et personne ne pouvait plus le lier, même avec des chaînes; | 3 The man lived in the tombs and no one could secure him any more, even with a chain, |
| 4 car souvent il avait eu les fers aux pieds, et avait été lié de chaînes; mais il avait rompu les chaînes et brisé les fers, et personne ne pouvait le dompter. | 4 because he had often been secured with fetters and chains but had snapped the chains and broken thefetters, and no one had the strength to control him. |
| 5 Il était sans cesse, jour et nuit, dans les sépulcres et sur les montagnes, criant et se meurtrissant avec des pierres. | 5 All night and al day, among the tombs and in the mountains, he would howl and gash himself withstones. |
| 6 Ayant donc vu Jésus de loin, il accourut et L'adora; | 6 Catching sight of Jesus from a distance, he ran up and fel at his feet |
| 7 et poussant un grand cri, il dit: Qu'y a-t-il entre Vous et moi, Jésus, Fils du Dieu Très-haut? Je vous en conjure au nom de Dieu, ne me tourmentez pas. | 7 and shouted at the top of his voice, 'What do you want with me, Jesus, son of the Most High God? InGod's name do not torture me!' |
| 8 Car Jésus lui disait: Esprit impur, sors de cet homme. | 8 For Jesus had been saying to him, 'Come out of the man, unclean spirit.' |
| 9 Et Il lui demanda: Quel est ton nom? Il répondit: Mon nom est Légion, parce que nous sommes nombreux. | 9 Then he asked, 'What is your name?' He answered, 'My name is Legion, for there are many of us.' |
| 10 Et il Le priait avec instance de ne point les chasser du pays. | 10 And he begged him earnestly not to send them out of the district. |
| 11 Or il y avait là, près de la montagne, un grand troupeau de pourceaux qui paissaient. | 11 Now on the mountainside there was a great herd of pigs feeding, |
| 12 Et les démons Le suppliaient, en disant: Envoyez-nous dans ces pourceaux, afin que nous y entrions. | 12 and the unclean spirits begged him, 'Send us to the pigs, let us go into them.' |
| 13 Jésus le leur permit aussitôt; et les esprits impurs, sortant du possédé, entrèrent dans les pourceaux, et le troupeau se précipita avec impétuosité dans la mer. Il y en avait environ deux mille, et ils furent noyés dans la mer. | 13 So he gave them leave. With that, the unclean spirits came out and went into the pigs, and the herd ofabout two thousand pigs charged down the cliff into the lake, and there they were drowned. |
| 14 Ceux qui les faisaient paître s'enfuirent, et portèrent la nouvelle dans la ville et dans les champs. Et les gens sortirent pour voir ce qui était arrivé. | 14 The men looking after them ran off and told their story in the city and in the country round about; andthe people came to see what had real y happened. |
| 15 Ils vinrent auprès de Jésus, et virent celui qui avait été tourmenté par le démon, assis, vêtu, et dans son bon sens; et ils furent effrayés. | 15 They came to Jesus and saw the demoniac sitting there -- the man who had had the legion in him --properly dressed and in his ful senses, and they were afraid. |
| 16 Ceux qui avaient vu ce qui s'était passé leur racontèrent ce qui était arrivé au possédé et aux pourceaux. | 16 And those who had witnessed it reported what had happened to the demoniac and what had becomeof the pigs. |
| 17 Et ils se mirent à prier Jésus de sortir de leur territoire. | 17 Then they began to implore Jesus to leave their neighbourhood. |
| 18 Comme Il montait dans la barque, celui qui avait été tourmenté par le démon se mit à Lui demander de pouvoir rester avec Lui. | 18 As he was getting into the boat, the man who had been possessed begged to be al owed to stay withhim. |
| 19 Mais Jésus ne l'accepta pas, et lui dit: Va dans ta maison, auprès des tiens, et annonce-leur tout ce que le Seigneur a fait pour toi, et comment Il a eu pitié de toi. | 19 Jesus would not let him but said to him, 'Go home to your people and tel them al that the Lord in hismercy has done for you.' |
| 20 Et il s'en alla, et se mit à publier dans la Décapole tout ce que Jésus avait fait pour lui; et tous étaient dans l'admiration. | 20 So the man went off and proceeded to proclaim in the Decapolis al that Jesus had done for him. Andeveryone was amazed. |
| 21 Jésus ayant de nouveau gagné l'autre rive sur la barque, une foule nombreuse s'assembla autour de Lui; et Il était au bord de la mer. | 21 When Jesus had crossed again in the boat to the other side, a large crowd gathered round him and hestayed by the lake. |
| 22 Alors vint un des chefs de synagogue, nommé Jaïre, qui, Le voyant, se jeta à Ses pieds, | 22 Then the president of the synagogue came up, named Jairus, and seeing him, fel at his feet |
| 23 et Le suppliait avec instance, en disant: Ma fille est à l'extrémité; venez, imposez-lui les mains, afin qu'elle guérisse et qu'elle vive. | 23 and begged him earnestly, saying, 'My little daughter is desperately sick. Do come and lay your handson her that she may be saved and may live.' |
| 24 Et Jésus alla avec lui; et une grande foule Le suivait et Le pressait. | 24 Jesus went with him and a large crowd followed him; they were pressing al round him. |
| 25 Alors une femme, atteinte d'une perte de sang depuis douze ans, | 25 Now there was a woman who had suffered from a haemorrhage for twelve years; |
| 26 qui avait beaucoup souffert entre les mains de plusieurs médecins, et qui avait dépensé tout son bien, et n'en avait éprouvé aucun soulagement, mais s'en trouvait encore plus mal, | 26 after long and painful treatment under various doctors, she had spent al she had without being anythe better for it; in fact, she was getting worse. |
| 27 ayant entendu parler de Jésus, vint dans la foule par derrière, et toucha Son vêtement. | 27 She had heard about Jesus, and she came up through the crowd and touched his cloak from behind,thinking, |
| 28 Car elle disait: Si je puis seulement toucher Son vêtement, je serai guérie. | 28 'If I can just touch his clothes, I shal be saved.' |
| 29 Et aussitôt la source du sang qu'elle perdait fut séchée, et elle sentit dans son corps qu'elle était guérie de sa maladie. | 29 And at once the source of the bleeding dried up, and she felt in herself that she was cured of hercomplaint. |
| 30 Aussitôt Jésus, connaissant en Lui-même la vertu qui était sortie de Lui, Se tourna vers la foule, et dit: Qui a touché Mes vêtements? | 30 And at once aware of the power that had gone out from him, Jesus turned round in the crowd andsaid, 'Who touched my clothes?' |
| 31 Et Ses disciples Lui disaient: Vous voyez la foule qui Vous presse, et Vous dites: Qui M'a touché? | 31 His disciples said to him, 'You see how the crowd is pressing round you; how can you ask, "Whotouched me?" ' |
| 32 Et Il regardait tout autour, pour voir celle qui avait fait cela. | 32 But he continued to look al round to see who had done it. |
| 33 Mais la femme, effrayée et tremblante, sachant ce qui s'était passé en elle, vint se jeter à Ses pieds, et Lui dit toute la vérité. | 33 Then the woman came forward, frightened and trembling because she knew what had happened toher, and she fel at his feet and told him the whole truth. |
| 34 Et Jésus lui dit: Ma fille, ta foi t'a sauvée; va en paix, et sois guérie de ton mal. | 34 'My daughter,' he said, 'your faith has restored you to health; go in peace and be free of yourcomplaint.' |
| 35 Comme Il parlait encore, survinrent des gens du chef de la synagogue, qui dirent: Ta fille est morte; pourquoi importuner davantage le Maître? | 35 While he was stil speaking some people arrived from the house of the president of the synagogue tosay, 'Your daughter is dead; why put the Master to any further trouble?' |
| 36 Mais Jésus, ayant entendu cette parole, dit au chef de la synagogue: Ne crains point, crois seulement. | 36 But Jesus overheard what they said and he said to the president of the synagogue, 'Do not be afraid;only have faith.' |
| 37 Et Il ne permit à personne de Le suivre, si ce n'est à Pierre, à Jacques et à Jean, frère de Jacques. | 37 And he allowed no one to go with him except Peter and James and John the brother of James. |
| 38 Ils arrivèrent à la maison du chef de la synagogue, et Jésus voit le tumulte, et des personnes qui pleuraient et poussaient de grands cris. | 38 So they came to the house of the president of the synagogue, and Jesus noticed al the commotion,with people weeping and wailing unrestrainedly. |
| 39 Et étant entré, Il leur dit: Pourquoi êtes-vous troublés et pleurez-vous? La jeune fille n'est pas morte, mais elle dort. | 39 He went in and said to them, 'Why all this commotion and crying? The child is not dead, but asleep.' |
| 40 Et ils se moquaient de Lui. Mais Lui, ayant fait sortir tout le monde, prend le père et la mère de l'enfant, et ceux qui étaient avec Lui, et Il entre au lieu où la jeune fille était couchée. | 40 But they ridiculed him. So he turned them al out and, taking with him the child's father and mother andhis own companions, he went into the place where the child lay. |
| 41 Et prenant la main de la jeune fille, Il lui dit: Talitha, cumi; ce qui signifie: Jeune fille (Je te l'ordonne), lève-toi. | 41 And taking the child by the hand he said to her, 'Talitha kum!' which means, 'Little girl, I tel you to getup.' |
| 42 Et aussitôt la jeune fille se leva, et se mit à marcher; car elle avait douze ans. Et ils furent frappés d'une grande stupeur. | 42 The little girl got up at once and began to walk about, for she was twelve years old. At once they wereovercome with astonishment, |
| 43 Et Il leur ordonna fortement que personne ne le sût, et Il dit de donner à manger à la jeune fille. | 43 and he gave them strict orders not to let anyone know about it, and told them to give her something toeat. |
