| 1 Le juge sage jugera son peuple, et le gouvernement de l'homme sensé sera stable. | 1 A wise judge will judge his people, and the leadership of an understanding man will be steadfast. |
| 2 Tel le juge du peuple, tels ses ministres: et tel le gouverneur de la ville, tels aussi ses habitants. | 2 As the judge of the people is, so also are his assistants. And whatever kind of man the ruler of a city is, of such a kind also are those who live in it. |
| 3 Le roi peu sensé perdra son peuple, et les villes se rempliront par le bon sens des puissants. | 3 A foolish king will be the ruin of his people. For cities will be inhabited through the understanding of those with power. |
| 4 La domination sur un pays est dans la main de Dieu, et c'est Lui qui y suscitera en son temps un gouverneur utile. | 4 Power over the earth is in the hand of God, and, in due time, he will raise up a helpful leader over the earth. |
| 5 Le bonheur de l'homme est dans la main de Dieu, et c'est Lui qui met la marque de Sa majesté sur le front du scribe. | 5 The prosperity of a man is in the hand of God, and he will place his honor above the face of the scribe. |
| 6 Perdu le souvenir de toutes les injustices du prochain, et ne fais rien par la voie de la violence. | 6 You should forget all injury done to you by your neighbor, and you should do nothing among the works of injury. |
| 7 L'orgueil est haï de Dieu et des hommes, et toute iniquité des nations est exécrable. | 7 Arrogance is hateful in the sight of God and of men. And all iniquity among the nations is abominable. |
| 8 La royauté est transférée d'une nation à l'autre à cause des injustices, des violences, des outrages et des fraudes de tout genre. | 8 A kingdom is transferred from one people to another because of injustices, and injuries, and contempt, and every kind of deceit. |
| 9 Rien n'est plus scélérat que l'avare. Pourquoi la terre et la cendre s'enorgueillissent-elles? | 9 But nothing is more wicked than a greedy man. Why should that which is earth and ashes be arrogant? |
| 10 Il n'y a rien de plus injuste que celui qui aime l'argent; car il vendrait même son âme, parce que, tout vivant, il a jeté au loin ses entrailles. | 10 There is nothing more iniquitous than to love money. For such a one has sold even his own soul. For in his life, he casts aside his innermost being. |
| 11 Toute puissance subsistera peu. La maladie qui se prolonge fatigue le médecin. | 11 All power is of short life. A prolonged sickness is of grave concern to a physician. |
| 12 Le médecin coupe par la racine un mal qui dure peu; ainsi tel est roi aujourd'hui, qui mourra demain. | 12 A physician causes a sickness to be shortened. So also, a king is here today, and tomorrow he will die. |
| 13 Quand l'homme sera mort, il aura pour héritage les serpents, les bêtes et les vers. | 13 For when a man dies, he will inherit serpents, and wild beasts, and worms. |
| 14 Le commencemeent de l'orgueil de l'homme, c'est de se détourner de Dieu, | 14 The beginning of the arrogance of man is apostasy from God. |
| 15 parce que son coeur se retire de Celui qui l'a créé. Car le principe de tout péché, c'est l'orgueil. Celui qui s'y livre sera rempli de malédictions, et il y trouvera enfin sa ruine. | 15 For his heart has withdrawn from the One who made him. For arrogance is the beginning of all sin. Whoever holds to it, will be filled with evil words, and it will overthrow him in the end. |
| 16 C'est pour cela que le Seigneur a couvert d'opprobre les assemblées des méchants, et qu'Il les a détruites à jamais. | 16 Because of this, the Lord has dishonored the gatherings of the evil, and he has destroyed them, even unto the end. |
| 17 Dieu a renversé les trônes des princes superbes, et Il a fait asseoir les humbles à leur place. | 17 God has destroyed the seats of arrogant leaders, and he has caused the meek to be seated in their place. |
| 18 Dieu a desséché les racines des nations superbes, et Il a planté ceux de ces nations qui étaient humbles. | 18 The roots of arrogant nations, God has dried up, and the humble among these nations, he has planted. |
| 19 Le Seigneur a détruit les terres des nations, et Il les a ruinées jusqu'aux fondements. | 19 The Lord has overthrown the lands of the Gentiles, and he has utterly destroyed them, even to their foundation. |
| 20 Il en a desséché plusieurs et Il les a exterminés, et Il a effacé leur mémoire de dessus la terre. | 20 He has dried up some of them, and he has utterly destroyed them, and he has caused their memory to depart from the earth. |
| 21 Dieu a aboli la mémoire des superbes, et Il a laissé le souvenir des humbles de coeur. | 21 God has abolished the memory of the arrogant, and he has left behind only the memory of those who are humble in mind. |
| 22 L'orgueil n'a point été créé avec l'homme, ni la colère avec la postérité des femmes. | 22 Arrogance was not created for men, nor was an angry temperament created for the gender of women. |
| 23 La race des hommes qui sera honorée, c'est celle qui craint Dieu, et la race qui sera déhonorée, c'est celle qui transgresse les préceptes du Seigneur. | 23 Those who fear God among the offspring of men will be honored. But those among the offspring who ignore the commandments of the Lord will be dishonored. |
| 24 Au milieu des frères, l'honneur est à celui qui gouverne, et ceux qui craignent le Seigneur seront estimables à ses yeux. | 24 In the midst of his brothers, a ruler has honor. And those who fear the Lord will have honor in his eyes. |
| 25 La gloire des riches, des nobles et des pauvres, c'est la crainte du Seigneur. | 25 The fear of God is the glory of the wealthy, and of the honorable, and of the poor. |
| 26 Ne méprise pas un juste qui est pauvre, et ne glorifie pas le pécheur qui est riche. | 26 Do not choose to despise a just man who is poor, and do not choose to magnify a sinful man who is rich. |
| 27 Le grand, le juge et le puissant sont en honneur; mais nul n'est plus grand que celui qui craint Dieu. | 27 The great man, and the judge, and the powerful have honor. But no one is greater than he who fears God. |
| 28 Les hommes libres seront assujettis à l'esclave plein de sens; l'homme prudent et bien élevé ne murmurera pas quand il sera repris, et l'ignorant ne sera pas en honneur. | 28 Those who are free will serve an understanding servant. And a prudent and disciplined man will not murmur at correction. But an ignorant man will not be honored. |
| 29 Ne t'enorgueillis pas en accomplissant ton oeuvre, et ne t'abandonne pas à la paresse au temps de l'affliction. | 29 Do not choose to extol yourself in doing your work, and do not be unproductive during the time of distress. |
| 30 Celui qui travaille et qui a tout en abondance vaut mieux qu'un glorieux qui manque de pain. | 30 He who works, and so abounds in all things, is better than he who boasts, and so lacks bread. |
| 31 Mon fils, conserve ton âme dans la douceur, et rends-lui l'honneur qu'elle mérite. | 31 Son, preserve your soul in meekness, and give it honor according to its merit. |
| 32 Qui justifiera celui qui pèche contre son âme? et qui honorera celui qui la déshonore? | 32 Who will justify one who sins in his soul? And who will honor one who dishonors his soul? |
| 33 Le pauvre trouve sa gloire dans son instruction et dans sa crainte de Dieu; d'autres sont honorés pour leurs richesses. | 33 The poor man is glorified by his discipline and fear. And there is a man who is honored because of his substance. |
| 34 Combien aurait de gloire dans l'opulence celui qui en a dans la pauvreté! Mais que celui qui se glorifie de sa richesse prenne garde à la pauvreté! | 34 But if someone is glorified in poverty, how much more in substance? And whoever is glorified in substance, let him fear poverty. |
