| 1 Quant aux impies, la colère de Dieu fondit sur eux sans miséricorde et y demeura jusqu'à la fin, parce qu'Il prévoyait ce qui devait leur arriver; | 1 But as to the wicked, even to the end there came upon them wrath without mercy. For he knew before also what they would do: |
| 2 car après avoir permis aux Israélites de s'en aller, et les avoir renvoyés avec un grand empressement, ils en eurent du regret, et se mirent à leur poursuite. | 2 For when they had given them leave to depart, and had sent them away with great care, they repented, and pursued after them. |
| 3 Tandis qu'ils avaient encore le deuil, pour ainsi dire, entre les mains, et qu'ils pleuraient aux tombeaux de leurs morts, ils conçurent follement une autre pensée, et ils se mirent à poursuivre comme des fugitifs ceux qu'ils avaient renvoyés avec des supplications. | 3 For whilst they were yet mourning, and lamenting at the graves of the dead, they took up another foolish device: and pursued them as fugitives whom they had pressed to be gone: |
| 4 Car une juste nécessité les conduisait à cette fin, et ils perdaient le souvenir de ce qui leur était arrivé, afin que la punition mît le comble à ce qui manquait à leurs supplices, | 4 For a necessity, of which they were worthy, brought them to this end: and they lost the remembrance of those things which had happened, that their punishment might fill up what was wanting to their torments: |
| 5 et que Votre peuple passât merveilleusement, alors qu'ils trouvaient eux-mêmes un nouveau genre de mort. | 5 And that thy people might wonderfully pass through, but they might find a new death. |
| 6 Toutes les créatures prenaient comme à l'origine, chacune en son genre, une nouvelle forme, obéissant à Vos ordres, afin que Vos serviteurs n'éprouvassent aucun mal. | 6 For every creature according to its kind was fashioned again as from the beginning, obeying thy commandments, that thy children might be kept without hurt. |
| 7 En effet, une nuée couvrait leur camp de son ombre, et là où l'eau était auparavant, apparut la terre sèche; il y eut un libre passage au milieu de la mer Rouge, et un champ couvert d'herbes dans ses profonds abîmes. | 7 For a cloud overshadowed their camp, and where water was before, dry land appeared, and in the Red Sea a way without hinderance, and out of the great deep a springing field: |
| 8 Là passa tout le peuple que Vous protégiez de Votre main, et il contempla Vos merveilles et Vos prodiges. | 8 Through which all the nation passed which was protected with thy hand, seeing thy miracles and wonders. |
| 9 Ils se réjouirent comme des coursiers dans de gras pâturages, et ils bondirent comme des agneaux, en Vous glorifiant, Vous, Seigneur, qui les aviez délivrés. | 9 For they fed on their food like horses, and they skipped like lambs, praising thee, O Lord, who hadst delivered them. |
| 10 Ils se rappelaient encore ce qui était arrivé au lieu de leur exil, comment la terre, au lieu d'autres animaux, n'avait produit que des mouches, et comment le fleuve, au lieu de poissons, avait vomi une multitude de grenouilles. | 10 For they were yet mindful of those things which had been done in the time of their sojourning, how the ground brought forth flies instead of cattle, and how the river cast up a multitude of frogs instead of fishes. |
| 11 En dernier lieu, ils virent une nouvelle sorte d'oiseaux, lorsque, entraînés par la convoitise, ils demandèrent une nourriture exquise. | 11 And at length they saw a new generation of birds, when being led by their appetite they asked for delicate meats. |
| 12 Pour satisfaire leur désir, les cailles se levèrent pour eux du côté de la mer, et le châtiment ne tomba pas sur les pécheurs sans qu'ils eussent été avertis par de violents tonnerres; car ils souffraient justemeent ce que leurs crimes avaient mérité. | 12 For to satisfy their desire, the quail came up to them from the sea: and punishments came upon the sinners, not without foregoing signs by the force of thunders: for they suffered justly according to their own wickedness. |
| 13 En effet, ils avaient été inhospitaliers d'une manière plus détestable que d'autres: ceux-là n'avaient pas voulu recevoir des étrangers inconnus; mais ceux-ci avaient réduit en servitude des hôtes bienfaisants. | 13 For they exercised a more detestable inhospitality than any: others indeed received not strangers unknown to them, but these brought their guests into bondage that had deserved well of them. |
| 14 Bien plus, ceux-là avaient été punis pour avoir reçu à contre-coeur des étrangers; | 14 And not only so, but in another respect also they were worse: for the others against their will received the strangers. |
| 15 mais ceux-ci, après avoir recueilli avec joie des hommes qui jouissaient des mêmes droits qu'eux, les tourmentaient très cruellement, | 15 But these grievously afflicted them whom they had received with joy, and who lived under the same laws. |
| 16 Aussi furent-ils frappés d'aveuglement, comme les premiers l'avaient été à la porte du juste, lorsque, couverts de ténèbres soudaines, ils cherchaient chacun la porte de leur maison. | 16 But they were struck with blindness: as those others were at the doors of the just man, when they were covered with sudden darkness, and every one sought the passage of his own door. |
| 17 Lorsque les éléments changent d'ordre entre eux, il arrive comme dans un instrument de musique où la qualité des sons est transformée, sans que rien perde l'harmonie qui lui est propre; c'est ce qu'on peut voir clairement par ce qui arriva alors. | 17 For while the elements are changed in themselves, as in an instrument the sound of the quality is changed, yet all keep their sound: which may clearly be perceived by the very sight. |
| 18 Car les animaux terrestres devenaient aquatiques, et tous ceux qui nagent passaient sur la terre. | 18 For the things of the land were turned into things of the water: and the things before swam in the water passed upon the land. |
| 19 Le feu surpassait dans l'eau sa propre puissance, et l'eau oubliait sa vertu d'éteindre. | 19 The fire had power in water above its own virtue, and the water forgot its quenching nature. |
| 20 D'un autre côté, les flammes épargnaient la chair fragile des animaux répandus en tous lieux, et elles ne faisaient pas fondre ce mets délicieux, qui néanmoins fondait aussi aisément que la glace. Car en toutes choses Vous avez glorifié Votre peuple, Seigneur; Vous l'avez honoré et Vous ne l'avez pas méprisé, l'assistant en tout temps et en tout lieu. | 20 On the other side, the flames wasted not the flesh of corruptible animals walking therein, neither did they melt that good food, which was apt to melt as ice. For in all things thou didst magnify thy people, O Lord, and didst honour them, and didst not despise them, but didst assist them at all times, and in every place. |
