| 2 Un homme à qui Dieu a donné des richesses, et des biens, et de l'honneur, et qui ne manque pour son âme d'aucune de toutes les choses qu'il désire; et Dieu ne lui a pas donné le pouvoir d'en manger, mais c'est un étranger qui dévorera tout: c'est là une vanité et une grande misère. | 2 A man to whom God hath given riches, and substance, and honour, and his soul wanteth nothing of all that he desireth: yet God doth not give him power to eat thereof, but a stranger shall eat it up. This is vanity and a great misery. |
| 3 Quand un homme aurait eu cent fils, qu'il aurait vécu beaucoup d'années, et qu'il aurait de nombreux jours de vie, si son âme n'use point des biens qu'il posséde, et s'il est même privé de la sépulture, j'affirme de cet homme qu'un avorton vaut mieux que lui. | 3 If a man beget a hundred children, and live many years, and attain to a great age, and his soul make no use of the goods of his substance, and he be without burial: of this man I pronounce, that the untimely born is better than he. |
| 4 Car il est venu au monde en vain, et il s'en va dans les ténèbres, et son nom sera effacé par l'oubli. | 4 For he came in vain, and goeth to darkness, and his name shall be wholly forgotten. |
| 5 Il n'a pas vu le soleil, et il n'a pas connu la différence du bien et du mal. | 5 He hath not seen the sun, nor known the distance of good and evil: |
| 6 Quand il aurait vécu deux mille ans, s'il n'a pas joui de ses biens, tous ne vont-ils pas dans un même lieu? | 6 Although he lived two thousand years, and hath not enjoyed good things: do not all make haste to one place? |
| 7 Tout le travail de l'homme est pour sa bouche; mais son âme ne sera pas rassasiée. | 7 All the labour of man is for his mouth, but his soul shall not be filled. |
| 8 Qu'a le sage de plus que l'insensé? et qu'a le pauvre, sinon qu'il va au lieu où est la vie? | 8 What hath the wise man more than the fool? and what the poor man, but to go thither, where there is life? |
| 9 Il vaut mieux voir ce qu'on désire, que de souhaiter ce qu'on ignore. Mais cela même est une vanité et une présomption d'esprit. | 9 Better it is to see what thou mayst desire, than to desire that which thou canst not know. But this also is vanity, and presumption of spirit. |
| 10 Celui qui doit être a déjà été appelé par son nom; et l'on sait qu'il est homme, et qu'il ne peut disputer en jugement contre un plus puissant que lui. | 10 He that shall be, his name is already called: and it is known, that he is man, and cannot contend in judgment with him that is stronger than himself. |
| 11 On se répand en beaucoup de paroles de discussion, et il y a là une grande vanité. | 11 There are many words that have much vanity in disputing. |
