| 1 Si quelqu'un vole un boeuf ou une brebis, et qu'il les tue ou qu'il les vende, il rendra cinq boeufs pour un boeuf et quatre brebis pour une brebis. | 1 If a man shall steal an ox, or a sheep, and kill it, or sell it; he shall restore five oxen for an ox, and four sheep for a sheep. |
| 2 Si un voleur est surpris brisant la porte d'une maison ou perçant la muraille pour y entrer, et qu'étant blessé, il en meure, celui qui l'aura blessé ne sera point coupable de sa mort. | 2 If a thief be found breaking up, and be smitten that he die, there shall no blood be shed for him. |
| 3 Que s'il a tué le voleur en plein jour, il a commis un homicide, et il sera puni de mort. Si le voleur n'a pas de quoi rendre ce qu'il a dérobé, il sera vendu lui-même. | 3 If the sun be risen upon him, there shall be blood shed for him; for he should make full restitution; if he have nothing, then he shall be sold for his theft. |
| 4 Si ce qu'il avait dérobé se trouve encore vivant chez lui, que ce soit un boeuf, ou un âne, ou une brebis, il rendra le double. | 4 If the theft be certainly found in his hand alive, whether it be ox, or ass, or sheep; he shall restore double. |
| 5 Si un homme fait quelque dégât dans un champ ou dans une vigne, et y laisse aller sa béte pour manger ce qui n'est pas à lui, il donnera ce qu'il aura de meilleur dans son champ ou dans sa vigne pour payer le dommage, selon l'estimation qui en sera faite. | 5 If a man shall cause a field or vineyard to be eaten, and shall put in his beast, and shall feed in another man's field; of the best of his own field, and of the best of his own vineyard, shall he make restitution. |
| 6 Si le feu, gagnant peu à peu, trouve des épines et se prend ensuite à un tas de gerbes, ou aux blés qui sont encore sur pied dans les champs, celui qui aura allumé le feu payera le dommage. | 6 If fire break out, and catch in thorns, so that the stacks of corn, or the standing corn, or the field, be consumed therewith; he that kindled the fire shall surely make restitution. |
| 7 Si quelqu'un met en dépôt de l'argent chez son ami ou quelque objet en garde, et qu'on le dérobe chez celui qui en était le dépositaire, si l'on trouve le voleur, il rendra le double. | 7 If a man shall deliver unto his neighbour money or stuff to keep, and it be stolen out of the man's house; if the thief be found, let him pay double. |
| 8 Si le voleur ne se trouve point, le maître de la maison sera obligé de se présenter devant les dieux, et il jurera qu'il n'a point pris ce qui était à son prochain, | 8 If the thief be not found, then the master of the house shall be brought unto the judges, to see whether he have put his hand unto his neighbour's goods. |
| 9 Et qu'il n'a point eu de part à ce vol, que ce soit un boeuf, ou un âne, ou une brebis, ou généralement quelque autre chose qui ait été perdue. Les dieux examineront la cause de l'un et de l'autre, et s'ils condamnent le dépositaire, il rendra le double à son prochain. | 9 For all manner of trespass, whether it be for ox, for ass, for sheep, for raiment, or for any manner of lost thing, which another challengeth to be his, the cause of both parties shall come before the judges; and whom the judges shall condemn, he shall pay double unto his neighbour. |
| 10 Si un homme donne à garder à un autre un âne, un boeuf, une brebis ou quelque autre bête, et que ce qu'il avait eu en garde ou meure ou dépérisse, ou soit pris par les ennemis sans que personne l'ait vu, | 10 If a man deliver unto his neighbour an ass, or an ox, or a sheep, or any beast, to keep; and it die, or be hurt, or driven away, no man seeing it: |
| 11 Il fera serment devant les juges qu'il n'a point pris le bien de son prochain, et le maître de ce qui aura été perdu s'en tiendra à ce serment, sans qu'il puisse le contraindre de payer la perte. | 11 Then shall an oath of the LORD be between them both, that he hath not put his hand unto his neighbour's goods; and the owner of it shall accept thereof, and he shall not make it good. |
| 12 Si ce qu'il avait en garde est dérobé, il dédommagera le propriétaire. | 12 And if it be stolen from him, he shall make restitution unto the owner thereof. |
| 13 Mais, si l'animal est mangé par une bête fauve, il rapportera au propriétaire ce qui en sera resté, sans être obligé à rien rendre. | 13 If it be torn in pieces, then let him bring it for witness, and he shall not make good that which was torn. |
| 14 Si quelqu'un emprunte d'un autre quelqu'une de ces choses, et qu'elle vienne à dépérir ou à mourir en l'absence du propriétaire, il sera obligé de la rendre. | 14 And if a man borrow ought of his neighbour, and it be hurt, or die, the owner thereof being not with it, he shall surely make it good. |
| 15 Si le maître est présent, celui qui se servait de la bête ne la restituera point, principalement s'il l'avait louée pour en payer l'usage qu'il en tirerait. | 15 But if the owner thereof be with it, he shall not make it good: if it be an hired thing, it came for his hire. |
| 16 Si quelqu'un séduit une vierge qui n'était point encore fiancée et qu'il la corrompe, il payera sa dot et il l'épousera lui-même. | 16 And if a man entice a maid that is not betrothed, and lie with her, he shall surely endow her to be his wife. |
| 17 Si le père de la jeune fille ne veut pas la lui donner, il payera au père autant d'argent qu'il en faut d'ordinaire aux vierges pour se marier. | 17 If her father utterly refuse to give her unto him, he shall pay money according to the dowry of virgins. |
| 18 Vous ne laisserez pas vivre les magiciens. | 18 Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live. |
| 19 Celui qui aura commis un crime abominable avec une bête sera puni de mort. | 19 Whosoever lieth with a beast shall surely be put to death. |
| 20 Quiconque sacrifiera à d'autres dieux qu'au seul Seigneur véritable sera puni de mort. | 20 He that sacrificeth unto any god, save unto the LORD only, he shall be utterly destroyed. |
| 21 Vous n'attristerez point et vous n'affligerez point l'étranger, car vous avez été étrangers vous-mêmes dans le pays d'Egypte. | 21 Thou shalt neither vex a stranger, nor oppress him: for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt. |
| 22 Vous ne ferez aucun tort à la veuve et à l'orphelin. | 22 Ye shall not afflict any widow, or fatherless child. |
| 23 Si vous les offensez en quelque chose, ils crieront vers Moi, et J'écouterai leurs cris. | 23 If thou afflict them in any wise, and they cry at all unto me, I will surely hear their cry; |
| 24 Et Ma fureur s'allumera contre vous; Je vous ferai périr par l'épée, et vos femmes deviendront veuves, et vos enfants orphelins. | 24 And my wrath shall wax hot, and I will kill you with the sword; and your wives shall be widows, and your children fatherless. |
| 25 Si vous prêtez de l'argent à ceux de Mon peuple qui sont pauvres parmi vous, vous ne les presserez point comme un exacteur impitoyable, et vous ne les accablerez point par des usures. | 25 If thou lend money to any of my people that is poor by thee, thou shalt not be to him as an usurer, neither shalt thou lay upon him usury. |
| 26 Si votre prochain vous a donné son vêtement pour gage, vous le lui rendrez avant le coucher du soleil; | 26 If thou at all take thy neighbour's raiment to pledge, thou shalt deliver it unto him by that the sun goeth down: |
| 27 Car c'est la seule couverture dont il enveloppe sa chair, et il n'en a point d'autre pour mettre sur lui quand il dort; s'il crie vers Moi, Je l'exaucerai, parce que Je suis bon et compatissant. | 27 For that is his covering only, it is his raiment for his skin: wherein shall he sleep? and it shall come to pass, when he crieth unto me, that I will hear; for I am gracious. |
| 28 Vous ne parlerez point mal des dieux, et vous ne maudirez point les princes de votre peuple. | 28 Thou shalt not revile the gods, nor curse the ruler of thy people. |
| 29 Vous ne différerez point à payer les dîmes et les prémices de vos biens, et Vous me consacrerez le premier-né de vos fils. | 29 Thou shalt not delay to offer the first of thy ripe fruits, and of thy liquors: the firstborn of thy sons shalt thou give unto me. |
| 30 Vous ferez la même chose pour vos boeufs et pour vos brebis: vous les laisserez sept jours avec la mère, et vous Me les offrirez le huitième. | 30 Likewise shalt thou do with thine oxen, and with thy sheep: seven days it shall be with his dam; on the eighth day thou shalt give it me. |
| 31 Vous serez pour Moi des hommes saints. Vous ne mangerez point de la chair dont les bêtes auront mangé avant vous, mais vous la jetterez aux chiens. | 31 And ye shall be holy men unto me: neither shall ye eat any flesh that is torn of beasts in the field; ye shall cast it to the dogs. |
